I had almost completed two packages of the LipLase treatment with Monica Masterson, NP when during my last session, she unexpectedly turned to me and said: "So my understanding is that even though you have smaller lips, you still don't want something more intensive like filler?" I was in shock. My full, ample, voluptuous lips are one of those features I always treasured and cherished receiving admiration for. I was so surprised to hear someone could actually find them to be small, my mind did briefly go to "OMG, DO I need filler?" and I started asking her all about filler. Of course, then I remembered they're a business and that's exactly what they wanted--or else they would NEVER make a comment that's so far from the gorgeous reality that is me. She then made it worse by talking about how she doesn't care about money and never pushes fillers on people--which of course made me wonder, is she saying it because it's *true* then?? After several therapy sessions, I am happy to say I am back to the level of confidence I had before this comment was made--so now that I'm stronger, I'm speaking up for myself. It was so startling and frightening to go in for what I thought would be a normal, caring, professional treatment and instead receive criticism of my body, completely out of the blue, not asked for, and non-consensual. It felt like a real violation of patient boundaries. I was here to receive a service, not an evaluation of my looks. Dr. Joseph was an amazing doctor and researcher for decades with vast knowledge and expertise including being amazing with things like Sculptra and all the injectable rejuvenation products, Obviously Dr. Ava must be great if he recommended her however my experience in trying to see Dr. Shamban was a huge disappointment. The receptionist informed me that Dr. Ava charges a $500 consultation fee before she will even see you.This I believe is the height of arrogance and believing your own press. After years of having been a patient of some of the best in the business, this was the first time I ever heard of this kind of outrageous fee not to mention when I asked about pricing Dr. Shamban for is way above fair pricing coming in at $1550 for one vial of Sculptra. Ok people will say if you are going to the best then of course you are going to pay a premium however many people who are doing well in CA, Los Angeles ,and want to go to good Doctors are not millionaires with vast sums of disposable income, so premium is on thing , making your practice only for 1 percenters is another. I recommend Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald in Larchmont Village , she has a much bigger reputation throughout the industry as one of the best and she still hasn't decided that she is soooo great that she will gouge you for $500 to feed her ego and her bank account. I have no complaints about the doctor or the nurses or the receptionists. I am always treated well and Dr. Simzar does excellent Mohs surgery. What bothers me is this: after the surgery has been performed on the skin, patients are required to dress their own wounds at home. Ava MD has no affiliation with home wound nurse facilities. I have gotten three infections as a result of having to dress my own wound. It's ridiculous for a surgeon to expect a patient to dress a wound competently. read more

I rarely write reviews but I compelled to write about my experience at Ava MD. The last few months have been life changing for me as I have had to relocate due to the Palisade's fire. So naturally I have been feeling of my comfort zone for the last 5 months. But coming into the office felt like a warm hug that I have not experienced in a long time at a doctor's office. Spoke to Marie who is the office manager to look into a $250 no show fee for an unconfirmed appointment. Well, I tried to speak to Marie but she was not open to my concerns. After hearing her out and learning that the office can possibly NOT make a mistake I attempted to express my thought... Marie just yelled and said have a nice day and hung up. I don't know why I'm so emotional today but she left me in tears. I have been going to Ava MD since 2015. Such a shame that the person in charge of billing has such nasty behavior. I like to surround myself and spend my money where I'm treated with respect. Zero value for me at the Santa Monica location. My concern is what if this happens again? I was just charged this month for August - 2019. On my last visit to the Santa Monica office was a week after the no show fee. You would think they would charge me at the visit or at least mention the fee. Mistakes happen and maybe the lady who checked me out that day was unaware but I never got a notice of this no show for an unconfirmed appointment so Marie sent my unconfirmed no show appointment fee straight to collections. The providers here are good; but the front of office and supporting staff are incompetent and rude, after several years as a patient I'm done. Here is what I have experienced: 1. I received a voicemail saying they're switching to an annual fee for all patients. It's $300. Ok so they're moving to a more concierge practice approach I get it. However they don't provide concierge level service from my experience. I am moving this summer because my partner is in the military. I called to see if they'd allow me to do a half year fee of $150, since I know I won't be here for a full year. When I explained that I'll be moving this summer and the annual feel didn't make sense for me I didn't even have the opportunity to ask if I could pay half. The person on the phone said they'll cancel my future appointments and hung up me on. Wow. I was also going to order some more product that I have run out out... so they just lost product sale and a half annual fee and future business. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I empathize with small business owners tremendously... but also know the importance of every sale. Three sales were lost in this one action by front of office staff. 2. Speaking of ordering those products... they say you can order products over the phone and have them shipped to you but they aren't set up to follow through. Every time I have done this (half to a dozen times) either they have ...not shopped the items I purchased and I had to call multiple times to have them ship what I paid for. Or they sent the wrong item or left items out. Or all of the above! Don't offer this service if you after staffed or willing to support it. 3. General rudeness. I might be more working class class and gender non conforming than their other clientele -- or maybe this is how they treat everyone -- but with the except of one older woman who typically worked the product area the front of office staff was consistently rude, difficult, and treated me like a nuisance for ...anything. Calling. Arriving for an appt. Etc. 4. Don't be late at all ever or be prepared for intense passive aggression. Once I showed up about 10-15 minutes late (unfortunate I agree) for an appointment. My understanding is it was just a following up check in a mole to see if it had changed. Not something that takes long. I thought it would be ok or they would ask me to reschedule. When I arrived the front desk was very put out and told me it was a big problem that I was late (I had apologized the minute I walked in and said my name and appt time), to the point I felt like I should leave. I asked if I should leave and is reschedule. She said no and go sit down. Then a nurse takes me back to a room. Continuing to lecture me about my tardiness. Gets me into a room - where I'm now supposed to feel comfortable getting undressed - and continues going on about how she doesn't even know if the doctor will be able to see me to which I say ok well should I leave or get undressed? She says it's up to me... to which I say it isn't really this is your office, your room, you are in the position of power and control and making me extremely uncomfortable. If you don't want me to be here and want me to reschedule I have already offered to do that, but please stop with whatever this is. She tells me to get undressed and leaves. At this point I am in tears I'm so frustrated and confused about why I'm being treated this way. My doctor comes in asks me why I'm there (yea seriously) I said I don't even know I'm here as a follow up they asked me to schedule I assume for my moles. They take a look. All is fine. I leave. Appointment ends on time. I'm sure Dr. Ava herself is lovely. The dermatologists, nurse practitioners, aestheticians etc I have encountered were all wonderful but the front of office and supporting staff are incredibly rude and coupled with their incompetence I'm not sure where they get the feeling they can treat people that way. So for $300 a year on top of what you pay for visits, services, and products... I recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I used to go to this provider and referred quite a lot of people- I stopped seeing Ava however, for a couple reasons, the filler she was injecting in my cheek became over done, and it looked like I had gained weight. In addition, every single time I would go to her nurse would come in the room and have an awkward conversation saying their prices went up, literally at every single appointment, often these appointments were close together- meaning they were going against their already quoted prices and making them up as they went every single time I went in (mind you she is already incredibly expensive)- After already being an established patient, they would cite a price increase from the manufacturer of product however, I work in the industry and knew this was false, but never said this directly to their face. She also took at least an hour after your appointment time to see you and the most I waited two hours should have walked out. She also has this arrogance about her. Despicable!!! Please be warned, this business operates with zero customer service and fraudulent billing practices. The first time I went to this business I was informed my insurance was in network and my visit would be covered. I went in for a dry skin patch that was bothering me. The nurse was great, gave me a prescription for a steroid and I was done. They booked me for a follow up appointment so they could check the patch post treatment. When I left that day I was charged for my visit. This charge was far higher than I anticipated given that I have insurance. After a few days the patch cleared, I called to cancel my follow up appointment because I didn't want to needlessly pay another expensive office visit fee to hear that everything was ok. Fast forward, after repeated bills to my home for a late fee, I followed up after each one with a call to dispute this charge. Eventually they told me the charge was removed. Then I receive notice that the amount was sent to collections. I have called this office so many times. Never once did a manager speak to me or return my call. This business practice is inexcusable, unprofessional and criminal. I have spoken to other people in my network who had similar experiences. The fact that they can not even have the courtesy to address the matter or their negligent communication is terrible. In a city with so many lovely businesses and great dermatologists I would say find another one! I have been going to Rappaport dermatology in Beverly Hills and they are amazing. I went in last week for a consult for a laser treatment . Upon arrival a receptionist seems put out by my arrival and thaws a little when I tell her I have an appointment. I'm seen by Karen RN who is knowledgeable and professional and we agree upon procedure and pricing. I'm told that I'll be receiving a call next week (Monday or Tuesday) to start on a medication prior to laser treatment that they just need a doctor to prescribe it. On Wednesday since I don't receive a call I call the office to follow up and am told I should hear back in a few hours. I then get a call telling me I have an in-person appointment with a doctor in 30 min. This is news to me. I'm told that the doctor has to see me to write prescription, and that it'll take a few minutes and doctor consult will cost $200. I tell receptionist this is not what Karen told me and she tells me that I probably misunderstood her and forgot I had an appointment. I'm also told that I've been sent reminders of said appointment (I swear I haven't). She continues to tell me I must have had a memory lapse (I'm 41 yo btw) and I tell her I want to cancel procedure. 30 minutes later someone from the office calls to tell me that my medication will be ready to pick up at their affiliated pharmacy and if they can go ahead and charge my credit card. I tell them prior conversation and they pass me along to someone else that tells me they suddenly were able to find a provider to sign off on medication without needing to see me. So basically they would have needlessly charged me $200 for no reason. I canceled procedure because I couldn't trust that in the future they wouldn't try to tack on another fee. I feel like they prey on people's desperation to squeeze money out of them rather than try to build a relationship with them that would be financially beneficial to their business in the long run. Also some of the front of house staff members are unnecessarily condescending, it's like relax we're just here to spend money to get better skin. read more

I had a pleasant experience doing a Cosmelan with Aileen in 2021. I tried to come for another treatment, a facial. I scheduled an appointment and I canceled 48 hours before due to a conflict. I canceled. They can check the phone records. I spoke to the lady and told her I was having Botox somewhere else and therefore could not have a facial. They said ok. Then I got angry calls on the date of the appointment and again I explained that I had canceled. I even emailed Aileen. There was obviously a mishap but it was not my fault, I canceled more than 24 hours in advance. It was 48 hours. Fast forward 6 months and I'm still getting $250 no-show bills. I've called multiple times. I called (800)660-4884 ext 311 to speak with Christina. And I will do so again. She was very friendly but obviously did not solve the problem. I've sent in notes with a bill to cancel this charge. Anything for them to cancel this charge. Nothing. I get the same bill over and over. I wanted to go back to Ava MD. I liked Aileen. I wanted to do another Cosmelan and start getting facials there. But this is insanity. And I see other reviews mentioning the same thing. I work in medical and I can tell you that you do not want to go to an office that doesn't have their billing in order. It's a nightmare. Terrible customer service, an ongoing headache. Do NOT go here. The visit was a terrible experience, the doctor was too busy to see me, a new patient, and the PA missed my basal cell carcinoma. The follow up has been terrible since then and all they do is send me marketing emails. I read good reviews so made an appointment to go for an annual mole check. A physician's assistant came in and I asked if I was going to see Dr. Shamban. She said that the doctor is way too busy to see every new patient because she is "famous". She then proceeded to rush me through the appointment. It was 15 minutes long. I was worried about a mole on my leg so she recommended that I freeze it off and we did that. But I had a much larger spot on my lower abdomen and she said not to worry. It didn't look like anything to her. Cut to 5 months later and the spot on my abdomen seemed a little bigger and darker. I decided to go to a different dermatologist to get a second opinion. She did a skin biopsy and it came back as basal cell carcinoma. Thank goodness I had an instinct to see someone else. In the meantime, the spot on my leg that had been frozen didn't go away. I called Dr. Shamban's office to mention this and they said that the PA forgot to tell me that I had to come back for a second visit to get it entirely removed. I had already been billed $130 for the first procedure and I was annoyed that the PA didn't tell me it would be as two step procedure. I called Dr. Shamban's office a couple of weeks ago to tell them about the basal cell carcinoma and the woman I spoke with, Joanna, was very nice and assured me that I would be hearing from Dr. Shamban directly to discuss my experience. That has not happened. No one has called me. Having your PA do a mole check and dismiss a large dark spot that turns out to be skin cancer is carelessness in the extreme. If you are too busy to see new patients, you should ensure you hire PAs who are better at their jobs. Then to not care enough to reach out to your patient after finding out this happened reflects an attitude of total disregard for human beings. I am completely shocked and appalled by how I've been treated by this practice and you should be too. read more

This place has seriously gone downhill & I will not be returning for a few reasons... First of all, they're asking everyone to pay them $300 per year because insurance is not covering some expenses. Also, they said that I would be able to get free laser treatments until they got this red spot off of my forehead, but actually they lied & charged me $150 last time for a laser that took less than 5 minutes. They charge $35 every time I came in there for someone to come look at my face & ask how I'm doing for a couple minutes. I'm also getting mail asking for more money, even though I've paid them after every single visit. This place is a just a money grab & I'm disappointed in myself that I chose to come here for so long. I have a chronic condition that brings me a lot of anxiety due to having horrible past procedures. Angelica is so kind, hilarious, and a real humanitarian that cares about the well-being of her patients emotionally and physically. I couldn't have asked for a better experience with her.
