I was giving whole blood so it went quickly! Before I knew it was eating shortbread cookies and sipping tea! Chris came to check on donors and asked if we needed anything! A bloody good 1-hour experience! I've been donating blood since high school but always at blood…read moredrives where I sometimes feel rushed and never at a blood center. After answering some intake questions on a computer, I waited for about 5 minutes, then was seen by staff who checked my blood pressure and iron levels with a quick finger prick. I was then led to a reclining chair with a TV. Since a window was casting major glare, I couldn't really watch it. While you can donate platelets, plasma, and red blood cells here, they take around 2 hours each. Donating whole blood just takes 1 hour start to finish and my actual donation time was under 8 minutes for a pint. Afterwards, I had some crackers and apple juice they provided. Super friendly staff always made me feel safe and comfortable. A staff member actually gave me a whole bag of Oreos to take home for my kids. I'd definitely choose this place again. TIPS: **You can schedule an appointment online at http://www.nybloodcenter.org **Unisex bathroom **Plenty of parking in their shared lot in the back. I feel like it stems from the manager of the site who always seems cranky. I'm a regular donor and I don't want to dissuade anyone from donating, but if you can, go to Vitalant. They are much friendlier and welcoming. I will continue to donate regularly but never again at the Scotch Plains site. Awful place.

The entire procedure takes about 1hr. but the actual donation takes 15 minutes. A whole blood donation is used primarily for trauma patients and those undergoing surgery. In the past I have donated platelets (cancer, blood disorder. open heart & transplant surgery patients), plasma ( used by serious burn & those with blood clotting issues) and power red (sickle cell, anemia, trauma and surgery patients. I was alerted to a severe blood shortage by email. To donate blood go to Vitalant's online site to find a Vitalant near you and schedule an appointment. I have an account set up with Vatalant and receive points toward reward cards. You begin the process by checking-in at the front desk. Your are handed a tablet with a touch screen to answer a series of questions. Step two involves having your answers checked and your vitals checked. Step three is the actual drawing of blood or blood parts. The staff is well trained with protocols which assure that your donation is correct and excuted properly. While donating you are constantly monitored to ensure your comfort and safety. They are very experienced at inserting the needle efficiently and painlessly as possible. After donating they have a snack bar set up and suggest you have a snack and drink before leaving.

Once I donated, I never received any email or app notification, but since then I receive at least 3-4 calls a week soliciting for blood or plasma and they come from all different phone numbers in the tri state area and can't be blocked. Seems like false advertising for the rewards and although I have called and sent 3 emails since then, and its been weeks, still no response, call or a gift card of any sort. I would hope if there was an issue with the app or their database, they'd at least let me know. At least the Blood Center of NJ provided what they offered.
