I hired Manny to reupholster my furniture. Manny Mendez, aka Florentino, the owner of the company. He presented himself as an expert and recommended a specific material, assuring me it was durable and resistant to dog scratches. The same material he uses for boats. Based on his recommendation, I agreed and paid a 50% deposit of $1,000 via Zelle on August 2, 2025. When the furniture was delivered on August 8, it arrived with visible oil stains and the material scratched easily, contrary to his assurances. When I raised these issues, Manny dismissed my concerns and later removed the furniture, saying he would correct the problem by reupholstering the two chairs. Instead of correcting the issue, Manny stopped responding to my calls and texts, and later demanded the remaining $500 in cash only before allowing me to even see my furniture. This led to a dispute that required police involvement. Under supervision, I was finally able to inspect the furniture and discovered the material had not been replaced as promised. In the end, I was forced to pay the balance just to recover my furniture, which still had the same problems. Unfortunately, our family entrusted "Manny" with an Italian designer chair for reupholstery. On August 1, 2025, he came to pick up the chair after previously quoting my mom $500 for the job. When he arrived, he changed the price to $750, and after discussion, both sides agreed to $550 with the understanding that the amount had to be prepaid fully in cash. He stated the work would take about three weeks. Since then, despite multiple calls and text messages, there has been no response and no updates. As of September 24, 2025, the chair and the money remain with him, and we have not received any communication. Although I have stopped writing Yelp reviews after having so many removed by Yelp, which is a waste of my time after spending upwards of 30 minutes at times to write a detailed review, I felt I owed Manny and his business my efforts (hopefully this review doesn't also get pulled!). He gets a lot of his business by word of mouth and positive testimonials, so I figured I'd do my best to help him out. I had some dining chairs that had started showing dark stains in the fabric, despite the fact I had used these chairs maybe 10-15 times in their lifetime. Still, I didn't want to get rid of them, I liked my dining set otherwise and didn't want to invest in a new dining set, not that I had found one I liked in my quest anyway. I had gone to several furniture stores thinking maybe I could buy chairs similar to mine and replace them, but it turns out black furniture is very hard to find these days, never mind black and distressed furniture. I also wanted to add some lightness and contrast to my dark furniture set, as I thought the current original fabric on the seats was too dark, so when my mother suggested just having my chairs reupholstered, I figured perhaps that would be the best solution. Unfortunately, after calling around at least 4-5 upholstery businesses (and going through the trouble of loading a heavy, large wood chair in a small coupe for in-person estimates), I was getting discouraged. I was being quoted as much as the cost of a new chair for the labor practically, and if I added fabric, then it'd be even more expensive of course. So, I decided to try Yelp, despite my gripes with the site and the "moderators" and I put out a request for a quote. Several of those businesses responded, but a good majority didn't. Manny responded within minutes, which was impressive. Still, someone had recommended a friend, and his quote was cheaper. I was set to go with that person's friend, but noticed he was very unprofessional, as in, he'd take 3-4 days to respond to a text, and the latest instance was when he took over 2 weeks to respond. Who knows how long he'd take to finish my chairs, or if I would even get them back at all! I decided even if I had to pay a few dollars more, I'd rather go with someone truly serious and a real professional, which seems rare these days in Miami, so I contacted Manny again. He gave me a price based on his fabrics, and another based on whether I wanted to bring my own. His prices were very reasonable and cheaper than most of the other upholsterers I had called, some of which worked in shady conditions, to top it off. I decided to provide my own fabric and dropped off the chair cushions. I was expecting to wait a week, maybe 2 to have all my chairs reupholstered but amazingly, he did it in less than 3 days. Now, I did have some concerns as the fabric I provided was tricky to work with, considering the stripe and flower patterns. Someone inexperienced would botch this job, but he has been in business over 30 years, so I knew I was in good hands. He did an amazing job, and even lined up all the cushions by stacking them on one on top of the other to show me how the patterns all matched and none of them were cut unevenly. Some of the other upholsters claimed the piping on my chairs was too complicated or would make the labor more expensive, but Manny didn't even bat a lash and did a great job with the piping, without charging extra. My chairs now look a lot more elegant, and because I chose a performance fabric, I don't have to worry about stains or needing to replace my cushions any time soon but if I do, I will feel comfortable engaging Manny again. He was very communicative too, and responded to calls and texts, even on weekends.
