I did a round of library visits today, on the hunt for some dvds. This is the next closest library…read moreto the one I visited in Paterson, so I figured I'd stop in. This library seems fairly sprawling, taking up a lot more space than most of the other local branches. You'd think that would indicate a wider selection, and maybe that's the case in the sections I didn't see. My main complaint about this library is that they make it really hard to find what you're looking for in the strange guise of making it 'easier'. For instance, They have a section for Fantasy, a section for Mystery, a section for Science Fiction, a section for Fiction, a section for Westerns, and a section for Young Adult Fiction. Which means if you're looking for a genre-crossing title, you've got a lot of places to look. Also, there is no specific section for romance. As an example, I was looking for a romance by Sandra Hill who likes to write time-travel fiction about navy seals and vikings (don't ask). I finally found the title in the Mystery section with a label on the spine indicating that it was Fantasy. Clifton's library DOES have a selection of DVDs and quite a few TV series on dvd, but overall, their selection is underwhelming. They also have a 'new media' shelf which I was hoping would have some new DVD releases. No such luck. This shelf housed titles like "Van Helsing" and "Rambo". I guess 'new media' means new to the library. On the other hand, if you're looking for VHS tapes, this place has a room packed floor-to-ceiling with cassettes. If you're looking for older titles, you might just have luck here. The librarians are helpful, but not terribly friendly. At one point a child wandered in to use the bathroom (He indicated that his father was waiting in the car outside). The librarians took great offense at his presence without an adult and told him to use the bathroom and leave immediately. Ultimately, this creates a quiet environment, if not entirely welcoming.

A few weeks ago, I went to study at the Livingston Public Library on a Sunday. I needed a quiet…read moreplace to work. I found a spot in the reference section and was able to get a few hours of study there. Plus, the Livingston Public Library is also part of BCCLS (sounds like "buckles"), which stands for the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. Within the BCCLS network, you can borrow books, media, and other lendable materials from any of the libraries in the system as long as you're a resident from one of the participating libraries' municipalities. This is a nice library with lots of natural light pouring into the rooms. It's a great resource for the nearby community, plus there are some interesting displays about local town history (Rikers Art Hill and hometown, Nobel Laureate Roger Yonchien Tsien (錢永健).

On National Librarian Day a month month I brought in biscuits for staff and always say how grateful I am for their professionalism. From Amy Babcock to all the check in patient staff thanks for your special and kind service. We should all try to express delight and joy in their help in accessing books and activities . @patricia/others: if there is a disturbing person /kids carrying on which I too have seen, speak up! Same with other as as loud talking or in other states limiting book choices , act as a citizen as we alll should be in a free country and state.

There's a beautiful art exhibition in the front, an orchid and plant garden by the spiral staircase and plenty of seating. Especially if you need to wait for a train. I was surprised and entertained by a glass box full of surprise poetry. I read a few and they were lovely. The paper flowers above the poetry display were very creative.

I greatly appreciate such details, as they are often overlooked by visitors, yet they are exactly what make a place special. The sculpture is located near the theater.

Are there going to be workspaces, computers and copy machines up there as well, or do we have to keep taking our reference books up and down the stairs to work? This is not helpful for study. And to use taxpayer money to hire a company to do this is just plain wasteful, when that money could be spent on purchasing quality reading and study material. As for the decimation of the music and history collections, that is just a disgrace. Major decisions like these should be voted on by the community. I have lived in Plainedge for over 40 years and I have never seen the library in worse shape.

I have loved this place for almost 50 years , but the decision of the present director to allow its exceptional classical music collection to be gutted , along with much of its history holdings , breaks my heart . I pray that the board will wake up and prevent the gutting of Plainedge's incomparable classic literature collection ( Jane Austen to Hemingway ) . While it is understood that space is not infinite , destroying the proud legacy of previous directors and staff is no way to serve the community or build one's own legacy . Libraries have traditionally been conservators of the best in our culture , quiet retreats as well as active workplaces . I do hope the Library Board wakes up !

I entered, signed in, was summoned shortly after and even able to utilize an outlet to charge my perishing iPhone. All in all HCRD was one of the highlights of the legal situation that brought me in one afternoon. Be prepared to be patient, wait a little, and polite to the staff and you'll get what you need. Make sure you have photo ID, you'll need it to get a guest pass for the building.
