Last time we rented in Ireland with Hertz got a tin can of a car, never again. Dooley's gave us a nearly new Ford, 4 doors with manual transmission. From noon Monday through 8am Saturday was about $260 (plus petrol, returned with full tank). We could have used credit card coverage for insurance, but the price was reasonable enough. We booked online before our trip. Irish car hire companies have been know for sleazy sales tactics but seems like they have cleaned up their act. I would rent from Dooley's again. I would award a 5th star if they did not charge for spouse as additional driver. That would differentiate them from the other Irish car hire companies, and would be good for business.

We're pretty resourceful so we don't get lost that fast i just have to remember that it's a right hand drive like Japan. Hubby was good with reorienting me LoL. Great service!

In…read morethe States, if you are renting a car with a credit card and using your own insurance there is a $0-$500 hold on your card and it has nothing to do with your preferred method of insurance. It was pure and abject sticker shock to be told it would be another €600 for their stupid 'Super CDW' insurance - twice the price of the rental and you don't have the informatiom needed to know you should pay for this up front. What information: you might ask? The fact that if you don't pay this €600 they put a hold of €5,000 on your credit card! I brought with me credit card with $5,000 on it so we could do what we want and have extra if we get in a spot. Allll of this said, I'm giving Hertz two stars. 1 star for this scammy hidden fee way of doing business. Put your fees up front. Let your customer be prepared and even pay the INSANE actual amount to rent the car up front. At least they'll know. I am adding 1 additional star because despite feeling duped and paying 3x the money for my car. I was VERY glad to know the car (and the tires - the salesman was kind enough to throw that on there without even asking or telling me until I saw it on the receipt) was protected by them and I didn't need to worry... Ireland your roadways are INSANE. They were fun at times but mostly you are nerve wrackingly close to oncoming traffic. Often times with bidirectional traffic on a single 80km/f lane. What!?!?

I declined insurance bc I had it through my credit card. After I returned the vehicle, a few days later they charged me for insurance that I declined. We rented a vehicle way ahead of time and got a good deal with it. So we thought! When we arrived…read moreat the Hertz rental in Dublin, Ireland airport, we asked for a hybrid vehicle as the price of fuel is $1.78 a liter. The attendant behind the counter was an older gentleman but he mumbled and with a thick Irish accent he was very hard to understand, especially getting off of a 10 hour flight. He mumbled something and gave us the car as to get us out of there super fast. Now we know why. He gave us a plug in hybrid; which has to be plugged in for it to charge and use otherwise you are just running on fuel. Yes the vehicle trickle charges the batteries but not enough to use the hybrid feature. Our trip was planned to drive all the way around the country. We did and the price of fuel alone was crazy. I called the rental company and told them that someone had taken out the charging cable and that I was not able to charge the vehicle. The so called customer service started arguing with me trying to tell me that the vehicle is a hybrid and that it charges on its own. I am from the crazy state where these cars are made. I know the difference between a full electric, to a hybrid to a plug in hybrid to the gas. She continued to argue the point. So that is their tactic, is to argue with the customer while they are on an expensive vacation, so that they hang up. That is exactly what happen, she was no help on confrontational. She should not be in customer service .....or maybe that is exactly why she is there. During the whole trip I tried to call and get someone who knows anything about cars but NOPE! The customer reps I spoke with were the same as the first one. I'm pretty sure the put them in those positions on purpose. There is no way to get a hold of corporate when you are in another country. I called when we got home and sent email because Hertz will not call you back. Their emails are sent out by the same people they have as customer service reps. ONCE THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY, THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO. BEWARE WHEN RENTING FROM HERTZ. BECAUSE THE FINAL BILL HERTZ THE WALLET! I WON'T EVER RENT FROM hurtz ever again, if you heed my warning just as the many others have written, you will go to another rental company!

We rented a GPS through Hertz that was broken-- it would randomly shut down at major intersections, rebooting to a screen that said "Hertz: Never Lost." (Haha- see attached pic) After a few times of this happening, we decided to navigate by physical maps and WiFi service (when we had it), figuring it was fun to explore the old fashioned way. When we returned the car, we pointed out the broken GPS and asked for a refund. We were told to email customer service, which we did, along with pictures of the GPS shutting down while driving. A month later, Hertz customer service emailed us back saying that the unit was not actually faulty (?) and we should have told them about it while we were on the road (we were never near a city, so it would not have been possible to switch out the units on our drive anyway). They did not give us a refund, and borderline called me a liar about the whole deal-- which is way more annoying than having to pay for a broken GPS! Go with another car rental at the Dublin airport. Hertz's equipment and their customer service are broken. The guy at the Hertz desk at the airport when we first got our car was super nice though! That's why 2 Stars- 1 extra for him.

I can only describe my car hire experience with Dan Dooley's as ... unique…read more The office on Westland Row is old and dirty and the service is quite terrible. The only reason that we did rent from them is because my friend who came over from the states was the only one with experience driving a manual (significantly cheaper) and as she was only 21 at the time Dan Dooley's was the only company willing to rent to us. While in the office, the less than helpful attendant asked for a card that had at least a €1000 limit for insurance purposes. I happily handed over my card as this is the custom at most hotels and car rental places, they just run a little pre-approval and then give you back your card. It wasn't until we were well on our way to Galway that the trouble began. My mom rang me from the states that my credit card company had been ringing them about possible card fraud, to the tune of €1000 from a Dan Dooley car service. My card was subsequently cancelled and my friends and I spent the rest of the trip discussing what sort of items the very unstylish attendant had bought with my stolen card details. Upon returning the car we were surprised to find the same attendant behind the desk, we'd figured he'd absconded on a holiday somewhere. When I questioned him about the charge, he explained to me that it was standard practicing procedure for Dan Dooley to charge your card with a €1000 before you leave the office and when you return with the car in one piece the money is refunded to your account. I was a little embarrassed that we'd made such a big deal out of something that had apparently been explained to me when they took the car, but I'm still a bit wary of the practice. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Dan Dooley, but if you're young and you are in need of a car they're a lot more lenient than other firms around, just make sure you don't have your mom cancel your credit card on you!

I was greeted by a lovely gal that had all my papers in order and ready to go. After verification, I was told where the car would be. A Skoda (Czech Republic) car that was recently bought over by Volkswagen. I have never been so impressed with how a car ran (diesel) and the room we had in the car. Never a problem and we put some serious miles on the car taking it from coast to coast and back again. Upon return, car was inspected and checked in and off we went, no problems. I will for sure use Dan Dooley again when traveling around Ireland. It was so easy and no hassles and the cars and service are the best one could ask for.
