Overall, we had a good experience renting from Avis in Dublin, although it didn't end on the best note. Picking up the car was easy, and the staff did a nice job helping us choose a vehicle large enough for three adults and all of our luggage. Since my U.S. auto insurance doesn't cover Ireland, I had already purchased insurance. Avis also offered additional coverage that eliminated any financial responsibility for damage to the vehicle. It wasn't inexpensive, but for us it was worth the peace of mind while driving on unfamiliar roads. Our Toyota Corolla had about 78,000 kilometers on it. It drove well, and despite my initial anxiety about driving on the left side of the road, I adjusted much faster than I expected. My daughter was an outstanding co-pilot, especially navigating what felt like hundreds of roundabouts between Dublin and Galway. The car itself had two maintenance issues that should have been addressed before it left the lot. The windshield wipers were badly worn, which became obvious during several rainy drives, and the brakes made a loud metal-on-metal sound every time I stopped. Neither issue prevented us from completing the trip, but both should have been caught during routine inspections. My biggest frustration came when returning the car. I knew I'd be late, so I checked the Avis app before arriving. It stated there was a 30-minute grace period, then an additional hourly charge, with a full extra day charged only after two hours. I returned the car one hour and 45 minutes late, yet the representative charged me for an entire extra day. When I pointed out the difference between the app and what I was being told, it was clear we weren't going to reach an agreement, so I paid the charge and moved on. Afterward, I completed the customer survey, shared my concerns about both the vehicle maintenance and the late-return charge, and asked to be contacted. I never heard back. As an Avis President's Club member, I expected better follow-up. I'd rent from Avis again because the pickup process and the vehicle itself met our needs, but I hope they pay closer attention to vehicle maintenance and provide more consistent communication regarding late-return policies. read more

Don't rent a rental here! I rented a car on budget reviews via auto europe in Glasgow, and they have a very very bad collaboration as I prepaid a car with insurance, arrived at the airport they told me I wouldn't have the prepaid car, and then I had to pay for the insurance. Also, we had optional £42 services that we absolutely didn't ask for. Finally, after our trip, we received the bill, with £42 of optional services, another insurance, and all this for 200 euros (not indicated at the airport), plus the 70 euros prepaid online, all for 3 days. So I report AVIX BUDGET everywhere because it's the customer support that is unacceptable. read more

beware of this Avis location. I prepaid a car online. I had insurance already on the credit card that I used for the rental, so I declined all insurance. When I arrived to pick up the car, the agent refused to release it unless I agreed to the "optional" and very expensive add-on insurance. I argued with him, but it became clear that my choices were pay this ransom or abandon my reservation (and not have a car that I needed, and potentially lose the prepaid money). Avis was useless in solving this problem. They just kept saying it was "optional" even though their agent made it required. Avoid this location. On second thought, just avoid Avis. read more

Did you know that you will be charged $25 for the privilege of opting out of buying the car insurance at Avis? That's right. You PAY to say that you don't want/need a service. (we are already covered by our American Express, so this charge is totally fraudulent). Great scam that I'm sure brings in loads of revenue for Avis here in Ireland. We rented a car over the Christmas week while visiting our parents in Tipperary. We booked a car rental through a third party "rentacar.com" a prepaid in advance $400. When we arrived we were informed that Avis Ireland had a mandatory charge of an additional €30 per day additional insurance which amounted to paying another €332. We are both fully covered drivers in the US. In the small print of mandatory insurance there was another mandatory charge of €6 per day for theft protection, so we were charged another €80..... Plus tax of course which was another €90. There is no mention of these mandatory charges when you book Avis online either directly or through third party. You are led to believe you are getting a good deal only to empty your pockets for another 600 dollars at the Avis desk in Ireland...,, I do not plan on using Avis again! Only good thing was the rep at the desk was real nice about lifting another $600 from us. read more

So it can come up as Heuston Train Station...it's a mile away and after I walked to the correct location they informed me I could of got a cab and they would have paid...so my prepaid car cost me another €130 because I needed a letter from my credit card company about additional insurance requirements in Ireland on my prepaid rental...the poor girl behind the desk was put in a difficult situation, asked for my phone and email...how is that not on my profile!? My husband was on an extended business trip. His company rents frequently from Avis when he travels for work. Being this is a corporate rental, there was no need for additional insurance, but they insisted on it. When he tried to remove it, they ignored him. He called them, went into the airport to talk to them, went to the rental lot to talk to them, and no resolution. The unneeded insurance was more than the actual car rental. Next up would be the GPS. This is something that is normally done at no charge because of the corporate contract with Avis, but they charged him almost $300 for the GPS Unit. Lets just say that they are helpful until you need something, then they ignore you. It amazes me that a company treats people like this, especially when there is a large corporation that can take its business elsewhere. I would suggest you do the same thing. We made an appointment to pick up a car at 11am on a Sunday, and upon arriving at 11am, stood in line for 50 minutes before being helped. I understand rough customers, and am assured that they didn't have a reservation. But I feel like there should have been someone there for those who had made reservations in advance! They appear to operate a scam. I reserved a car for two days at a cost of c. €35. I have my own excess-waiver insurance so declined their insurance. They basically refused to let me take the care unless I took their insurance at €42 for two days. I started to argue back but they were adamant I'd have to cancel the hire (and pay for the privilege) unless I paid up. I'll be complaining to ebookers as well, through whom I booked this "great" deal. read more

Just an average small rental car place. There were 3 reps helping but there is no quick way to get the car. No kiosks. They were nice but we were in there about 50 minutes total. Just too long. I didn't feel scammed or pressured into buying insurance. Ireland is one of the few countries excluded in the fine print of the supplemental rental car coverage that credit cards and insurance policies offer. read more

What started out as a negative experience with Budget, ended as one of the best examples of great customer service. I flew into Dublin from Chicago alone, and proceeded to the car rental counter where I went through 3 different cars to finally get an automatic vehicle. They told me there would be an upcharge, but not seeing any other options, I agreed. It turned out that in my jet lagged state, I understood £80 total upgrade fee, and never could have guessed that it was a daily fee. Along with insurance, my initial $135 booking turned into just over $1,000 USD! Upon returning the vehicle, I spoke to a kind man named Marius at the Budget city center location. He was extremely compassionate and corrected this wrong by refunding me a portion of the charge to a much more acceptable rate. It alleviated a lot of stress from me and left a very positive impression of Budget in my mind. Thank you Marius! read more

Literally just had the contract put in front of me and was given the keys. No explanations nothing. First time renting here. The staff, both at picking up and returning the vehicle were knowledgeable, courteous and efficient. The car was what I needed and was clean. There was a major problem (for me) in that no one had checked the car beforehand to discover that the 12 v outlet was "dead" and I got as far as half way to my destination when the GPS failed. Being at least a little knowledgeable, I was able, in the pouring rain, to find the fuse box (accessible by standing outside the passenger door) and one by one, to extract fuses until I found the dud one. I was able to take a gamble then by removing another 15 a fuse - not knowing what this was going to affect, but being lost in the rain. Luckily, the wipers still worked. Hell of a job trying to find a micro fuse in rural N. Ireland, but I did find an outlet eventually and all was well. On trturn to Avis, they were decent enough to scrub the 45 euro GPS charge, but didn't seem all that interested when I suggested checking this as a pre-rental inspection as well as putting a share fuse in the slot allocated in the fuse box. read more

We arranged a 7-day rental through Costco--although we certainly received great rates (and a Mercedes upgrade--possibly because we asked for an automatic)--the Avis representative persisted in vicious attempts to 'bully' us into accepting the Avis insurance--at a ludicrous rate of 50 Euro/day. The representative even showed me the full cost of the vehicle (20,000 Euro), insinuating the burden was mine. Disgusted by the ripoff quackery (and knowing that my homeowners insurance should cover any disaster should it occur), I smartly waived the insurance; however, at a credit card hold of 3,500 Euro (and a 30 Euro inconvenience fee)!! Fortunately, nothing bad occurred during our rental. Nonetheless, the bullying instilled a great deal of anxiety during the rental period, constituting nothing less than a scam--a scam to dupe unknowing tourists into accepting an expensive ripoff. I recommend all potential customers carefully research their home insurance options prior to rental--or feel the wrath of a bully. read more

Had a very frustrating experience at this location. I declined the extra insurance, and they threatened to charge me with a 30 Euro fee for waiving the insurance. They basically forced me into purchasing nearly 40 Euros of insurance without disclosing this fee upon checkout at the website. The staff (especially the manager at this location) paid no attention to customer service or satisfaction, and they insisted that the extra fee was detailed on the website. Regardless, it wasn't disclosed when I made the reservation. I'll follow up with a formal complaint, but please be warned - the staff at this location is extra shady and will try to extort money from you. read more

Rented a car here last month and I can confirm the insurance scam referenced in the earlier reviews is still going on. I called the Avis counter direct weeks before my trip and my intentions to self insure (credit card covers me internationally). Got to the desk the day of arrival and was forced into either putting a hold on my credit card of the entire value of the car or buy their insurance was effectively doubled the rental rate. I'm not sure how I missed this as there are tons of complaints all over the internet specifically regarding car rental insurance in Ireland. Regardless, the quotes you're getting from booking sites including Avis themselves are not correct. read more

Rented a car and the car itself was great, no problems, very nice car. Upon rental we picked it up very late in the day, we did not leave the lot until 4PM. The gentlemen helping me said that because we received the car so late, we could return it the same time on our drop off date. That was the extent of the conversation. A little over a week later we arrive exactly at 4PM to find the lot closed. Apparently on Saturday they closed early. We were never advised of this. Had to take the car to our hotel that night in the MIDDLE of Dublin, spend over an hour in traffic, and to top it off pay for a night of hotel parking I returned the car the very first thing the next morning and was rewarded with an additional day charge thanks to the lovely gentlemen at Avis. They could care less about the fact that we were told we could drop off the same time we picked it up. Service is pathetic. For under 100 Euros and really zero loss of rental availability for that car Avis just permanently lost a customer. read more

Avis is by far the worst company I've ever had to deal with in my entire life. Firstly, they gave us a faulty manual car and implied that it felt different to drive as Americans because it was a European make (even though the driver had been driving standard vehicles her entire life). The first two gears were faulty but we were able to get to Galway in fifth as it's a major highway direct from Dublin. However, the car died at 5:30 on a Sunday; terrible timing. From that point on, things just got worse and worse. The breakdown service for Avis did not work, although we called seven times. We had to call AA ourselves and then the AA operator was able to get ahold of someone in Budget in Galway to come pick us up from the side of the road. AA then called Avis in Dublin - although the main office was closed apparently. That Avis operator gave us a number for the Avis Shannon Airport but that was also a faulty number (both the one she gave us and the online one did not work - even though we were using an Irish phone). We didn't have the car for the first night but still had to pay for it. The following morning we went to Budget when they opened. We were not only forced to wait for a car for two and a half hours but were made to feel small and degraded. Adrian Flynn is a patronizing man with no concept of customer service. After the horrible experience we had in Galway on the side of the road, with a faulty car, we wanted a new vehicle that worked properly. He was not able to give us one; but said they had one in Knock - a 40-60 minute drive from Galway. There were three of us however and he said the driver could only fit two of us three girls in the vehicle. He told us that one of us should take the bus up to Knock and meet the driver. Not only did he want to put two young women in a car with a strange girl but he wanted to send one by herself on a bus in a strange country. Absolutely ridiculous. Once Adrian Flynn left the office; his colleague was able to step in and get us a car immediately - having us avoid the terrible act that was about to occur. I cannot believe how poor customer service was for my trip. It was absolutely ridiculous. I will never recommend this company for anything and cannot believe it is still active. This company is terrible and doesn't deserve even one star - I am absolutely disgusted. read more

The car rental was set up by our travel service. Upon pick up in Dublin, desk clerk suggested an insurance upgrade of 24.00 Euro for no-deductible. I agreed to this only. There was a higher amount on the paperwork, but was assured verbally that that was only a confirmation of the prepaid from my travel agency. ( big mistake) . The next day, a vibration in the steering began. Shortly thereafter, the tire inflation warning light came on. The front right tire looked low. We drove out of our way and filled the tire with air at a fuel station. I looked at the front tires and found that the tread was coming off one on the inside front right, as well as wires showing and the other front was bald on the inside. We drove an hour out of our way to Shannon to return the car hoping the tire wouldn't blow on the way. The Avis employee in Shannon said that the Dublin store should never have let a customer have the car in such a dangerous condition. He let us change to another car for the duration of the rental. The car was returned on time in Shannon, full of fuel and in perfect condition per an Avis employee on 7/21/18. On 7/23/18, after returning home, my credit card was charged $265.16 ( instead of the promised 24.00 Euros) for a full fuel tank ( 75.00 Euros ) , 75.00 Euros for the insurance upgrade, 19.40 Euros for "additional products" ? 26.43 for premium location fee (already prepaid ), 26.43 for one-way service ( already included in prepay) . A full week has gone by of poor customer service. Rude reps hung up on me when I asked for a supervisor. No answers to emails, I might get supervisor to call me back in 48 hours. Resolution could take 7-14 days. I will never use Avis again. Thank goodness for my credit card service. They reversed all but the 24.00 Euros that was promised. read more

My fiancé and I had a great experience with this Avis location! I was disappointed to see such negative reviews. We rented two cars from here days apart as our trip was broken up in staying in different cities. Both cars were perfect. The first rental was quick and painless, and the only thing I wanted to complain about was the other customers taking forever asking questions they should have researched beforehand (i.e. INSURANCE). The second rental wasn't as painless. They were short one or two employees, so it was just two front desk representatives taking care of everyone--poor things. We waited almost two hours; although this delayed our day's plans a little, I felt far worse for the employees having to work like that. Again--the customers were the ones making it take FOREVER. A least two separate customers took about 25 minutes asking questions they could have easily googled, holding up everyone even more. Nevertheless, the workers were patient, attentive, polite, and pleasant. We were running late to return our final rental, and we arrived just after closing after having to change the tire because we backed into something (still feel terrible about that--and we did SO WELL the whole time!). They were waiting patiently for us, and took care of everything, including the insurance claim (or whatever), efficiently and with great customer service and even a sense of humor. Best $50 ever spent. We were so grateful for their assistance and professionalism, and we will definitely be returning to Ireland AND Avis for our car rentals. I think a lot of headache would be avoided with a little research and understanding. Just get the insurance. We adapted really well, besides the mishap in our rushed reversal, but watching other tourists drive was PAINFUL and one of the reasons we were running late to begin with. read more

This place is the worst! I reserved a car online for what I thought was a very reasonable price, about 15 Euros a day for a subcompact. My mistake. When I got there I was informed that I needed insurance, which I was fine with, on the website it said 11 Euros a day. I was informed that was not the case and that it was actually around 40. I declined the insurance and was told I needed a deposit of 3000 Euros on my credit card. Unfortunately, and they of course know this, I was there with my bags and ready to go with on 3 days s I didn't have much of a choice. The 3 day rental for a subcompact ended up being $233. Beware of this place and its bait and switch tactics. Very disappointing Avis. read more
