An A-OK experience with my rental this week from the Avis location at the Bismarck airport. I've now rented from all three agencies that have offices in the baggage claim area and Avis is one of them. I specifically reserved a mid-size SUV due to the crap weather they have in North Dakota and my Subaru Outback was adequate. All-wheel drive and enough room for luggage, despite it's 20,000 miles it handled quite well in the snow. It ran well though it complained a lot being started at ten degrees below zero. I rented a car from Avis for a business trip. After my connecting flight in Denver was delayed 1 hour on August 3rd instead of arriving in Bismarck ND at 11:30 pm on August 3rd I arrived at 12:30 am on August 4th. I got to the rental counter to pick up my reservation and was told they didn't have a car for me because I was a no show on the 3rd. I eventually got a car after much complaining and was able to get to my customer that morning. To make matters worse I was charged an additional $141 for not keeping the car for the full 10 days! The one hour flight delay wound up costing me $141 from Avis because it was technically a day late on picking it up. I will never rent another car from this rip off company!!! My flight number was on the reservation so if they looked at that they could have seen my flight was delayed! Terrible company, do not rent here. read more

The service message is lost at this location. The two girls the task want to make money off incentives will try to sell you LDW even know your profile says you don't need it or covered by a company. Also try to scare you and talk about deer accidents and how people get hit all the time and state you better cover yourself. I was a preferred renter and even though my profile is pretty clear when I needed and what insurance was covered they still put me through a 20 minute sales pitch. Despite several requests the managers did not call me back. I would highly recommend picking another counter there because this is a franchise they don't follow the Avis protocol. In fact they tell you they are have to follow it. At this location there is a Hertz there is an enterprise I believe is also a Dollar. These counters are right next to the Avis counter. So if you are a the "preferred renter" I wouldn't rent here. I am a VIP with National and should I return as I travel through the I will be not be using Avis at this location. They seriously need some good training here... And perhaps some progressive discipline for the two girls who like to make money on the backs of the customers. I can't believe how unprofessional and rude the staff is at this local Avis. the address is wrong on google so I got lost. I called the place and the phone kept ringing and got sent to voicemail. I finally find it and go in. as I do the phone is ringing and the staff has her phone in her hands messaging on it. I wanted to yell at her she was at work!! so next she tries to huddle me more money for a nicer vehicle. i asked isn't this one nice your giving me? It wasn't. It was so dirty I debated if I got the wrong keys. finger prints, mud, food between seats and it was so gross. I said something on return and the clerk got rude. read more

Note: this Avis Branch is a franchise location, and my review is primarily for the franchisee, Five Star Car Rental, not the Avis corporate entity. Due to the cancellation of the last flight out of Fargo on a holiday, I was forced to get an unplanned rental to drive west to Bismarck to catch a new flight the next morning. The rental lasted less than 24 hours in total and was completely uneventful. Months later, I'm combatting a claim from Five Star, the Avis franchisee in Bismarck, for alleged damages to the vehicle that they assert were incurred during my rental period (not true). This claim has been initiated NINE MONTHS after the end of my rental period. No vehicle inspection report has been provided. The extent of the claim is three words: "back bumper - dented." They are seeking $1600 in damages. I've since learned that this a common practice for car rental franchisees in smaller, regional airports: file claims indiscriminately for anyone who doesn't purchase loss damage waiver insurance. The practice is dishonest and scammy, especially the ludicrous interval for notifying the customer of such a claim. So here's my tip: don't rent a car here at all. But if you do, document the hell out of the car's condition, both before and after, and KEEP THE DOCUMENTATION. You'll need it when you get a letter from PurCo Fleet Services almost a year later trying to extort you for thousands of dollars more. read more

Stay away. Very disappointed. First off they didn't have the vehicle I reserved a month in advance. They offered me a car two classes lower. Then after much to do the vehicle they gave me had an extreme shimmy when driven more than 50 MPH. We went back to the rental center and they had the nerve to say we needed to drive it over to the repair shop and have mechanics look at it. This was in 17 degree weather with my whole family waiting. Then they told me no refunds because me driving it to the mechanic was an attempt to make it right. Then there was talk of another car coming from another location later...I don't think so. HERTZ two counters down saved the day and our vacation. AVIS you have lost a 20 year customer. This place is an absolute joke! No stars should be an option. Got a rental for a week and a half and also purchased the emergency roadside assistance which brought me to $2,000. Upon returning, we got hit with a blizzard which delayed the return date by a day. Once we reached town, we ran over a nail but made it home just in time. I called Avis emergency roadside assistance right away to get someone over and was told someone would be coming. No one came until 2 days later and yes, I called them each time to ask what was going on. I ended up calling Avis to let them know that I wouldn't be able to return the car since their roadside assistance wouldn't be here until the next day. The lady at the airport location told me that it's my responsibility to fix the tire even though I purchased the roadside insurance which makes absolutely no sense because what am I paying insurance for? Before I returned it, the worker said that my bill was 22, but when it was returned, I was charged almost 2600. read more

I rent from Avis weekly. This is the only Avis where I have had a pooer experience. I have rented here twice and waited 30 minutes for a car. They have a Preferred sign on the back wall, but they do not actually have a Preferred offering. 60 minutes to fly from MSP and then 30 minutes to wait for a car. Hertz and Enterprise desks were both efficient with short lines right next to the Avis desk. No more Avis in Bismarck for me. read more

Do not rent from these people. There was a snow storm and I94 was closed. My business partner slept in his car overnight and could not be here in person to be added to the rental car. Instead of simply taking the keys to rent the car out to him again they refused everything and tried to take the car back. Fortunately their competitors who had less cars to rent (I mean there must be a reason Avis here Always has cars when no one else has them to rent -took us in, stores our things and were decent humans. I called their owner. He's a liar too. Said we could leave our stuff in the car. The agent pulled some faa line and defied her boss or maybe he just lied. Do not rent from here. Enterprise. Hertz. Stay away. Hidden charges of 300 $. Car wasnt ready ontime. Was overcharged for a whole tank of gas jyst because it was missing a gallon of gas. The manager said she would apply coupons for the horrible ordeal. Now we are told theres no notes of that and they charged us even more. Never again Avis. What a dishonest company. I don't believe it is legal to charge $250. 00 for less than 24hrs of rental yet that is what I was charged at Bismarck airport I got in at 12:30 am and I couldn't find the keys to my vehicle, the weather was windy and icy plus it was impossible to find transportation in such weather. Nothing wrong with the car - just the service. We told the agent we had prepaid, she would not believe us. She tried to up-sell us a size that she HAD to give us because they didn't have any compact cars available. Then, we get the car with 306 miles to empty, we put on approx 125 miles in 4 days and when we fill the car up, we put in over 5 gallons and now it reads 368 to empty. We didn't get a car with a full tank, they tried to up sell us and they double charged us and would not help reverse the charges. ON top of it all... None of this was communicated to us - the gal at the counter made it sound like we are all good, our balance is clear - here is your receipt have a great day. A sincere appreciation for Amy Thompson Manager at Avis Airport Rental. My wife and I got stuck in Denver due to weather cancellations. United Airlines was of no help whatsoever so we opted to make the drive to Bismarck. Immediately after renting our car the state of Wyoming shut down almost every road in the state due to adverse conditions. We had a 24 hour rental but due to the delay had to stay overnight in Ft Collins and take off when they opened roads in the AM. Due to road conditions we couldn't go very fast and arrived in Bismarck a little over two hours past our 24 hour window. Initially company computer tried to charge us an additional $250 for the time overage. I asked for some understanding of circumstances and the next day Amy Thompson called me and said the overcharge was waved and that the Denver airport rental had in fact overcharged me for the initial rental. She adjusted that charge as well. It's the customer service that people like Amy can provide that makes a company successful. read more

This is the second time I have rented from them this year and both times the service was outstanding. We flew in late at night last week after our plane was delayed 2 hours and CSR Tanya made the process so smooth. Because I was traveling with kids and would be picking up more nieces and nephews, she was able to upgrade me to a new suburban. I loved the ride and she was excellent. read more

Had to cancel an upcoming trip to Bismarck that was to take place in May because of the virus situation. Marriott and United Airlines were first class on their refunds and understanding. Avis told me to basically get bent and that they were charging a $50 scam fee for cancellation. Talked to a supervisor that was rude and obnoxious from the start. He told me the virus problem was not a fault of Avis and there would be a scam fee. Telling this guy about Marriott and United didn't mean a thing. Tried going up the ladder but he told me there was no one above him. I asked him if he was the CEO. He then became more irritated. Screw this bs company. read more

We were told that it was $.20 cheaper a gallon to have them fill up the tank then it is to fill it up ourselves. Well what they don't tell you is that they charge you an 11% "concession fee" on top of the that. They will not refund and they argue that they have no control over what the airport charges them LOL! What they DO have complete control over is how blatantly misleading and shiesty they are when telling you what a great deal their fuel is! Do not rent from here! There is a reason why the Enterprise Rental counter next to Avis is busy and Avis is a ghost town. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Learn from my and everyone else on here s mistakes! read more

Too much to say about the unprofessionalism at this place. I pretty much had a similar experience as Dan B. comment below, slept in car 2 days, when my car was dropped off at the dealership my stuff was trapped in their car. They would not provide me with a replacement car even though they had the inventory. They showed prejudice, and one of there agents actually physically pushed me. I was charged for the full 10 days, when I only had a car for 6 days. The car died due to winter conditions, when their vehicles are not fortified for ND winters. Every agent I encountered was rude. They are trying to charge me for everything, Do not rent from these "things". read more

Listen, I went to avis this morning and was severely disappointed with a fellow named "Dan" and his customer relations. He came off as cocky and lazy. A young woman working helped me more than he did and she was just temporary. I asked her what's fun to do in Bismarck and she explained she was only working the weekend, but had more to tell me than Dan did. I hope then when I drop off to fly out, I'm not dealing with him.
