I don't think I've ever rated a neighborhood car rental agency this highly before, but this Avis location truly deserves it IMHO. We had out-of-town guests and needed another car for the week. The online reservation went smoothly, and I picked up a Hyundai Venue the next morning, which served our needs perfectly. Jessica Escobedo provided excellent customer service, including extending my rental by a day with a simple phone call to her. Returning the car was easy ... except I forgot my garage door opener. I rented a gas/electric hybrid specifically to test-drive one before buying. I have a perfectly good gas car, I just wanted the experience during a 100-mile drive in a gas/electric hybird with my family on vacation. Avis gave me a Dodge Hornet with 0% EV charge and no time before I needed to hit the road -- certainly not 3 hours to achieve an 80% charge at any of the nearby Level 2 charge stations. The lady at the counter explained, "We just treat them like gas vehicles." OK, but THAT'S NOT HOW YOUR WEBSITE RENTS THEM! (Note that I rented directly through Avis.com, not a third-party company.) There were no charging stations I could find where we vacationed, so the entire experience was a waste of $340. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. read more

This might be a convenient location but it's not worth the very poor customer service. Each employee tells you a different thing, and in the end, none are true. They make promises that are not kept, don't share details, and try to do anything to just process a credit card payment. If I could give them "0" stars, it would be done. Rudest experience of my life. I pre payed for a vehicle which we needed for a week. When I was literally online, laptop open and all, I called the Carmel valley location and spoke with a women, who as it turned out was the manager of this location, because I was having difficulty with their online booking site in applying a AAA discount. She said, "NO PROBLEM SIR", simply bring your AAA card in the day of your pick up and we can apply a 10% discount then. We went to pick up the car on Saturday and the lady that was working their clearly was having a bad day prior to my arrival, and being the lucky individual that day, as I was trying to explain to her what I was told by a an employee at her very location regarding the AAA discount application , she just refused to apply it,....rudest, laziest, most uptight and unprofessional woman I've encountered in my lifetime. She ended up exuding her power, and power tripping out on me and refusing my/our service..almost like she was trying to teach me, a grown adult a lessons. Reported her to her company and got my FULL refund, explaining the distressing situation to them and how she(AVIS) cancelled our car..I mean, really? There are bigger things to be stressed over in this world, yes? Unbelievable!?! And here I am wrong this post.? I sort of had to w/ this experience. Have a blessed life lady. I mean, if you truly dislike your position/job that much than please don't work in a customer service-related job. Geesh! Right?Reported her manager too as she was a big part of this awful experience. Made reservation for full-size car at 7 am. I arrived on time, the contract was written, and was given the key of a compact car. I informed the agent of the mistake and he proceed by telling me the car was not available so he took upon himself to give me a 3 dollars discount per day and was hoping I was not going to find out. Our car is in the shop and we needed to rent a car to go to LA, so I went on Priceline to make a reservation. I didn't want any problems so I called ahead to make sure they had a car. The lady repeated the name on our reservation and said, "Yes, I don't have the keys in my hand, but if it's not ready when you get here we will upgrade you to a larger vehicle for no charge." So I got a ride to the place from Pacific Beach and sure enough, no vehicle available. No free upgrade. We are out of luck. Doesn't matter that we have to be at work. Not their problem. Even with a reservation and a courtesy call to make sure there would be no issues, this location still caused me to be late for my appointment. Thank God I had a ride, b/c had I taken a Lyft, I'd have been out $50 (on a round trip)! read more

I run around the whole Yelp world and sometimes, those miles just don't need to go on my ride. I rented a little Toyota Yaris from this local small rental place, It's oh so tiny, maybe 15 cars in its arsenal and a wittle office to boot. It's not near and airport, but rather, right of the 56 in the Carmel Creek shopping mall (The same one that has a Vons). The rental price was average, the service was average too-but the convenience gets the stars from me. It's right in my neighborhood and super easy to snag a mobile if needed. So my car was in the shop longer than expected and everyone was busy so I needed a good inexpensive rental to get around. I hate renting cars at the airport because the taxes make is almost double what the regular rates are!!! I always see this Avis when I go to the shopping center so I thought I'd give it a try. It was convenient anyways. The rate for 3 days was $100 for an SUV. Of course I probably could have gotten something for half that but I needed the room with the dogs and other stuff. The girls working there were GREAT!!! AND--they also told me if I wanted a particular car to call a couple of days in advance and they would secure it for me. I would rent here again and again. To start, the reservation was made for an SUV. The representative for this particular location (Carmel Valley/ working on 11/02/20, name unk) via phone call mentioned the SUVs on the lot were low and one needed an oil change. It was expressed that the reason why we were renting a car was for the long drive to Arizona. The representative mentioned to show up in approx an hour and the SUV that needed the oil change would be available. After showing up at the Carmel Valley location a few hours later we were greeted with a 85 degree office we had to wait in to fill out paperwork! Next we were shown the available SUVs. One of which was offered that still didnt get the oil change... our response "No, we of course dont want the SUV that STILL didnt get an oil change!" Next 2 SUVs was a gamble, but we preferred the SUV that had Satellite Radio (which is advertised by your rental company). WE had to check the SUVs and then the uneducated representative gave it a go and told us "This SUV has satellite radio". We needed to start the drive to Arizona so we took that SUV. Not even 5 minutes into the drive we noticed there was NO FUNCTIONING SATALITE RADIO. On top of that the horse power for this SUV was comparable to a Chevrolet Metro! For this long drive we were stuck with a heap of metal! To top it off, with the 6 hour drive we had to encounter night driving in which the head lights only lit up 3 feet ahead of the car so in return we had to use our brights occasionally which affected other drivers!! Windshield wiper fluid was low after one use of trying to clean the bug juice off the windshield... I could go on & on. All of this thanks to your "quality service". We live near this location so it was quite convenient, but we would rather put mileage on our personal cars to drive to a different rental car company. Worst car rental experience. As background: we have rented from this location 3 times. 1. Cars here are NOT maintained properly. Not even cleaned very well. The car I rented last week was not vacuumed. It had a sticky mess all over the center console. 2. They lied to me and attempted to fool me to switch to a smaller car than I paid for. 3. They never have the car we rented. I even went so far as the pre-pay for a standard SUV this last time. When I arrived I was told I could have a smaller crossover or a minivan. 4. This was the worst car rental experience I ever had. I'll never rent from Avis again. A short version of my experience is: 1. Cars here are NOT maintained properly. Not even cleaned very well. 2. They lied to me and attempted to fool me to switch to a smaller car than I paid for. 3. They think it is customer's responsibility to check the condition of the car and maintain it. 4. Customer support call and road side assistance call are next to useless. Here's the full story: I reserved a full size car for a road trip, and I got this office 15 min to 5 pm which was my pick up time. First, he gave me a red Mazda 6. When I started the car, tire pressure warning light was stuck on. It did not turn off even after I drove few blocks. So, I went back to the office and told him about it. He said the car had been all checked ok. I asked him back how come the warning light had not been noticed, and he said it was not him who had checked the car. I requested another equivalent car, and he said there is no other car available. I insisted, and he tried to fool me into a smaller car - a Mazda 3 - claiming that it was the same car. I declined immediately pointing that out. He did not even blink and pretended to be working on a computer. After a while, he pulled out another Mazda 6. It was a mystery how this one got available suddenly few minutes after he said there was no other car available. When I started this car, there was the same problem. Tire pressure warning light was on. Furthermore, there were dents and scratches all over, and there was disgusting smoke smell. I went back to the office, and this time he locked up the door and did not respond to me at all. It was 5 min past 5 pm which was the closing time of the office, yet my reserved pick up time was 5 pm and he was in the office talking to me 1 minute ago. Clearly, he hid in the office avoiding the problems. I called Avis customer support number and told them that my car had tire pressure warning light on. They said, there was nothing they can do, and told me to call their road side assistance number and request to check the tires. So, I called their road side assistance number, and it took 2 hours for someone to show up. Furthermore, the guy did not even bring an air pump. He told me to go to gas station and check the air pressure myself. I don't know from when it was a customer responsibility to maintain a rental car. I ended up checking the pressure myself, and it was actually good. Thus, I had to hit the road with a concern that something else about the tire might be wrong because the warning light was on all the time. I also had to keep the windows open most of the time to air out the smoke smell. How lame this was. read more

First time renting a car through Avis/Budget and will stick with Enterprise from now on. We arrived and were given keys to a car, we walked out to see it and discovered dog hair covering every square inch of the seats and floor (looked like it hadn't even been cleaned). I'm highly allergic to pet dander so we requested another car, they only had one other. We asked if it was 4WD, she didn't know. We took it since we didn't really have another option. I paid for the car in advance using credit card A. When I arrived, the car rental agent insisted that I hand over credit card B, possibly because it was associated with my Avis account. This was really confusing and worrisome for me because I intended to only use credit card A due to its better roadside assistance benefits. I was given a Mazda 6. The car was in good shape. It was almost as if it came straight off the dealer's lot with the following exceptions: - The floor mats had been removed and hidden in the trunk. This left hooks exposed, ready to trip up unwary drivers. - The Bluetooth settings had not been reset so I could still see stuff from past renters. - Some airport luggage stickers were left in the left passenger door. - The owner manual was hidden in the trunk rather than the glove compartment. I only located the manual after some searching. This could have serious safety implications if the manual was needed urgently. I also noticed some problems with the car: - When playing music from a USB thumb drive, album art was not displayed even if the art was embedded in the audio file. - The parking brake was unintuitive (I am used to Toyota cars). read more

Abusive over charging. They don't go by the rental agreement when you return the car. They will make all the excuses to frame you to over charge you. The rental agent who rented the car to me, her name is Jessica. She is the most unprofessional and dishonet people I ever met. She will say something to make you feel ok when you pick up the car, then when you return she just deny eveything she said and lie to you. What she is trying to do ultimate is to over charge you and make more money by being tricky and dishonest. Don't let them get away with it. If you have the original contract call the customer service and they will make the adjustment for you. But it was a big hassel. So just don't rent your car from this place. You will see your final invoice go up 2-3 time of the oringinal bill even you return on time and re-fill the gas. read more

My economy cars have been clean, ready to go and at a daily rate that's comparable to other national brands. I do leave my own car in the public parking lot over night and have never had any problems. This is unique to this location. "gentleman" at the front desk was highly combative. called prior to dropping the rental off as a precaution, was told the office was open/come on in etc., however when I arrived the door was locked and the phone wasn't being answered. waited over twenty minutes in the cafe a few store fronts down for the phone to finally be answered. guy took no ownership for ANYTHING. instead of an explanation I was met with an excuse. walked back over, and there were no pleasantries, no hello, no how are you. rude and abrasive would be among his character traits. he took the keys, printed a receipt, and charged me over $300 for two days. clearly incorrect, I slid the receipt back over to him and was met (yet again...) with excuses, a lack of ownership, and a half ass attempt to rectify the situation. the long and the short of it is, don't rent a vehicle from this location. or maybe be sure of who is behind the front desk. hope for someone with customer service experience/a decent human. read more

I travel for business (San Diego to LA) most every week and Jessica's team has been exceptional every week for the past 3+ years. They always have my car ready on time, they take care of me when I need something special like a short notice change in the reservation or an off hours return, and all of the people who work there seem genuinely interested in making my rental experience as smooth as possible. Can't comment definitively on how rates compare with other firms since I only rent here (it's really close to my house), but I doubt their prices are wildly different from any of the other major car rental firms. Over the years, I've watched some pretty snotty customers try to resolve whatever issue they seem to have, and the staff has always reacted calmly, used facts instead of emotion, and offered solutions to problems instead of resorting to the rude and obnoxious behavior that some customers seem to feel will get them what they want. This group has my business for as long as I need to rent cars! read more
