Jeep Wrangler hybrid upgrade from compact car from Avis Salt Lake City, Utah airport location
    Rumit P.

The experience wasn't perfect but far better than I've had at vehicle rental places. I had reserved a compact car for three days for $276 using credit card points with Chase. There was no line around 11 am on a Monday at the Avis counter at the Salt Lake City airport. The employee helped me right away, was largely friendly, and processed an upgraded vehicle for me to a Jeep Wrangler because of upcoming snowy conditions. He never told me it was a hybrid though! There was an unusually long wait where he just waited for 10 minutes in silence and didn't tell me what was going on but evidently he was waiting for someone to come up and hand him keys. Otherwise, the process was fairly smooth. I was told where to go (downstairs to the garage), which parking spot the vehicle was to be found, and how to exit.

Over 25 people In line for preferred and 50 at the counter. This location sucks.... Time to learn what customer service is.

Terrible experience here at this Avis. Ordered a full sized sedan but they struggled to supply the car I ordered and asked if I would take a Range Rover or Truck. Ended up sizing down to an intermediate car after about 30 minutes of waiting. Step it up Avis! They said they would refund me $50 but never did... Had to contact support and still hoping for the best. Never had a worse experience at any other Avis, just this one.

This was my first time renting a car in my entire life, and it was an absolutely terrible experience. I was definitely expecting to wait in line to get my car, and there were five people in front of me, and three people at the counter. This was no big deal at all. The person at the counter who helped me was named SKYE, and they were very helpful. I appreciated the directions that were given to go and find the car, and where to get the keys, etc. When I walked down to where the vehicle was, I found the vehicle easily. There were three gentlemen sitting in chairs in front of where the car was, and I wasn't sure how to get in and out of the space, or the parking lot for that matter. I tried to ask one of the guys for help, and he said what do you want?! I apologized and just asked for directions on getting out of the parking lot. Then, for some reason, they picked up their chairs and moved out of the way, and then glared at me. I wasn't expecting to drive forward, I was expecting to back up, but I assumed that because they moved that meant that that's the way I was supposed to go. I was given no directions, and ended up going to an area in the parking lot where they do car washes for all of the rental vehicles. I ended up getting stuck in a one-way only area, and thankfully somebody helped me get around so that I didn't crash the car into anything. As soon as I looked down and started driving, I noticed that the car was overdue for an oil change. The outside of the car was filthy, and it was kind of difficult to see outside of the windshield. I had to stop at a gas station to clean it. I thought that the cars were supposed to be clean when you receive them, but that was not the case. I had to call the company because I was returning the car a few days early, and the person on the other end of the line gave me so much attitude for it. My trip got cut early, so I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have to do anything extra to return the car. I'm also confused about the total bill For my rental because it was probably $50 less than the original quote, but I returned my car five days early. Sounds like a huge rip off, and I will never be renting from them again.

I was hesitant in booking a car with Avis after reading all the reviews in this location. However, they have the best price among all other rental companies and have similar not so good reviews. We landed around 8 pm and the airport was so alive which made me worry that i would either have to wait for a while or will not have a car like what the other reviews were saying... i was wrong! There were maybe 3 people ahead of me and 3 open counters. The other rental booths were busy as well. It only took me 5 minutes before I was helped, only to found out the preferred clients go straight down to the parking lot. Tip: sign up for it! It is worth it. we went down and was greeted right away, i was told that my car isnt available but was given the choice for a bigger car for the same price. Of course i said "Sure"! The reason for -1 star is the quality of the car seat that we got. All their car seats are stored in a cabinet and none looked clean. Each one of them are either stained, has tears or both. They looked gross and not been washed for months. I just picked the least gross and showered it with disinfectant. I hope avis will get this addressed. Return was quick and easy!

It's so nice that this Avis garage is walking distance from the airport. I booked my car when I arrived and I was till able to access the discounted rate which was nice. I was also given a complimentary upgrade being that the car in my spot was a jeep when I reserved a compact car, such a pleasant surprise. They were very hospital upon my return. Definitely would rent from this location again!!

On our visit to SLC we had a reservation with another company to rent our vehicle. After further thought and research, we wouldn't be landing until 11:45pm. This other location had hours until midnight. We decided to look at some other options in case we don't make it in time. Turns out our flight was delayed and we didn't land until after 12:30am. We thought this worked out well as Avis had a more affordable rental rate and were open later which accommodated our flight time better. We had reserved a Toyota Camry or similar. We have driven Camry's so we thought this would be a good vehicle to rent. We had some driving to do and it would be nice to do in a similar vehicle that also gets good gas mileage. As it turns out when we got to the counter, we were told they had no Camry's or similar vehicles available. In fact, they were almost all out of vehicles. Not sure how that works when you reserve a vehicle type, then it's not available? All they had left were Jeeps and a Suburban. Well our gas mileage dropped by at least a third and the size of our vehicle at least doubled. They did offer those other vehicle options at the same price however it would have been nice to receive the vehicle type we reserved. Returning the vehicle was a very simple process and the airport does have a gas station located on the property which is nice so our vehicle could be refilled before returning it.

If you are a preferred member, just walk on downstairs and pick up your car. When I arrived, the sedan that I wanted "wasn't available" although there are plenty of sedans there. The associate said he would look for one for me and give him 10 minutes, he did not look for anything. I did let him know that I saw one readily available after 20 minutes of him not coming back out for me in the heat. I got the sedan I wanted and went on my journey. The return process was seamless. Drop and go. Good experience nonetheless.

    Mike C.

Avis confirmed my reservation for pick up at SLC for price of $341.17, I was given written confirmation of our agreements months prior to picking up the car, confirmation number: 0517083US5. Kathryn Jones then charged me $700.00 on my credit card, inspite of evidence she is still trying to cheat me, my bank saw the evidence and corrected my bill. Now she is threatening me with collections. she should be fired for dishonesty and ignorance.

Do you like waiting in line for two hours when you already reserved a car? Then Avis in Salt Lake is the company for you!

I made a reservation for three days over the holiday weekend and I went through my airline to make the reservation at the same time as my flights just for convenience. I requested a mid-size car and was informed the price would be $54.34 per day. When I picked up the car the daily rate had changed to $57.81 per day and I was told my reservation was just an estimate. The "real" costs are calculated at the location to get the most up to date price on local taxes and fees, or something like that. I declined the company's insurance coverage because I had my own and I declined the pre-pay for fuel option. I don't remember what the price was exactly, but it was higher than the local gas stations. If the car wasn't brought back with a full tank then they would charge me $12 per gallon to fill it up themselves. There was also a $200 deposit which was not mentioned when I made my reservation, and they also rounded up to the nearest dollar so the hold on my credit card was $440 instead of $239.20. The vehicle I was given was nice but there were dings and scratches all over it. I took pictures and when I was leaving the garage I mentioned it to the attendant at the gate and they said if I picked it up in that condition then the company has already made a note of it. I was covering myself in case Hertz came back and said I caused the dings and scratches. The gas tank was on the right side of the car instead of the left which made gassing it up a bit of a challenge since a lot of gas stations in the area are too small to easily maneuver the opposite direction as everyone else. Before bringing the car back I took it to a car wash and hosed it down manually just to clean off the dust and dirt. I didn't have to do that but I wanted to at least try to return the car somewhat clean. When I brought the car back to Hertz I didn't receive any receipt or confirmation and when I asked the attendant checking it in, they said I would be contacted if there were any issues. Fortunately everything seemed ok as I wasn't contacted and my final charge for the rental was correct. I've had less hassles with Budget and Avis so if I'm ever in SLC again I might go to one of these rental companies instead.

Returning was a breeze…read more However getting the car out of the parking lot was a LONG wait: somehow prices were incorrect and gas to wait till the manager SLOWLY walked down. That was at least 10-15 mins parked at the exit gate. This could have been much faster.

Budget and I? We were in a good place. But then... cue ominous music... the Great Airline Computer Glitch of 2024 struck. Having dutifully returned my first rental (mistake #1), I found myself stranded at the airport for 12 hours, only to be abandoned at the gate like a forgotten carry-on bag. So back I went to Budget--my only hope. They had one car left, and I paid for it like I was buying shares in a tech startup. Supply and demand, baby. Desperate to get back to LA, I hopped in what looked like a respectable SUV. Sleek. Confident. A real road warrior. Two critical features were on permanent vacation: The air conditioning: Oh it worked... too well. Antarctic-level. No dial, no mercy. I had to crack the windows just to thaw myself out every 30 minutes. My body experienced all four seasons between Salt Lake and LA. The radio: Stuck on one channel. It was like being in a relationship with a DJ who only liked elevator jazz. Once I lost reception, I turned to my iPhone for survival music. Did I get home? Yes. Was I grateful? Also yes. Would I rent again from Budget SLC? Eh... maybe. But next time I'd like guarantees. Like, can-I-control-the-climate-and-music guarantees. Do better, Budget. Do better.

This time, it came back to bite me. I was informed at the Thrifty counter that the car assigned to me was a Dodge Ram 2500, and that changing my vehicle would double my daily rate. The desk clerk additionally gestured at their coverages pamphlet, asking me which I'd like to pay for, and made no indication that I had the freedom/right to opt for no coverage. This is predatory behavior, because it is an attempt to manipulate me, the customer, through limited information and fearmongering. Thankfully, I was self-educated on these options prior to meeting with the desk clerk, or I might have been pressured into adding even more to my bill. Ultimately, I opted for an "upgrade" to an economy car that Thrifty already had available for us--(why this car was not available for me instead of a Dodge Ram 2500, when I booked the " Wild Card Compact or larger if available or similar" option is beyond me). Additionally, they had a number of economy cars parked in "unreserved" parking spots, indicating that they intentionally assigned me the Dodge Ram 2500 instead of an economy car to exploit me. Now, the cost of my family trip has increased tremendously because the rental car expense was effectively doubled by this predatory, manipulative practice. This experience truly harmed my perspective on Thrifty, their services, integrity, and dependability as a company. I am disappointed thinking that Thrifty leadership encourages these practices--this is not caring, proactive, or honest.

This experience with Thrifty SLC was a masterclass in awful customer service, and by the time I walked out, my blood was boiling. First, I had to endure a miserable, slow-moving 30-minute line just to get to the counter. I had actually signed up for Thrifty's online check-in and also opted for the Flash Pass option to avoid this exact scenario, but because their system failed to send the required arrival notification, I was forced into the line anyway. When I mentioned this, the agent, Anna, dismissively told me I hadn't been charged for the pass and that I should be satisfied with that: completely missing the point that their broken system just cost me a great deal of my time with more to follow. But the real nightmare started at the counter. Anna was ruthlessly determined to sell me insurance I did not need. When I explained my existing coverage, she claimed that CSAA "only offers roadside assistance." A lie. When I told her my premium credit card provides primary rental coverage, she denied that was possible, too. Another lie. At any other rental counter, I easily check decline, decline, decline and I'm out of there. But here I was forced to stand there and argue my rights for quite some time before she finally acquiesced. The sheer disrespect and misinformation was staggering. To top off the exasperation, she then couldn't get her printer to work and had to call a colleague over to show her how to use the machine. What should have been a seamless, bypassed pickup turned into a stressful, infuriating one-hour ordeal that pushed me straight into the nightmare of peak rush hour traffic. I wasted an hour of my day and a massive amount of patience on a combative, untrained agent. Unacceptable.

Because of that, they became my go-to company, and I recommended them to friends. But after my recent experience at the Salt Lake City International Airport location, I will never rent from SIXT again. They overcharged me $621 without clearly explaining why. I had already paid in full for a premium 7-passenger vehicle, yet they gave me a Chevy Suburban and used that to justify charging me an extra $621 -- basically the full price again for the entire rental, as if I hadn't already paid! This was completely different from any past experience I've had with SIXT. They fully took advantage of me. I prepaid in full for a 7-passenger vehicle (even though our group only had 5 people) for 6 days. When I returned the vehicle, I was shocked to see an additional $621.20 charge added on top of what I had already paid! The total came to $1,055.79, which equals $179 per day -- completely exorbitant and unreasonable. An employee misled me, saying the change would be a minor charge of about $50 total for all six days, but instead I was charged $621.20 more! The Sixt employee took advantage of my trust, exploiting the reputation Sixt once had for offering complimentary upgrades. I personally contacted the management at this local store and later disputed it with Sixt's corporate level, but no one corrected the overcharge. This clearly reflects fraudulent and unethical behavior within the management chain at this branch. When I disputed it, they offered me a $100 voucher -- completely unacceptable, dismissive, and insulting. They also kept my brand-new Apple Pencil that I accidentally left in the vehicle. I wasn't contacted about it; it was only mentioned in an email later, and when I asked for it to be mailed back, it was never returned. This isn't just bad service -- it's dishonest. SIXT overcharged me, kept my property, and refused to make it right. This review is specifically about the management at the Salt Lake City International Airport location. Bottom line: Don't rent from this location. They took my money, kept my property, and did nothing to make it right.
