If I could leave zero stars I would. I landed Sunday this week, and was given the keys to a vehicle. Did a brief walk around, things seemed fine. Started the vehicle, and the windshield washer fluid was low (this covered up the check engine light, I should have paid attention to. Asked the attendant as I drove out if he could top it off... He didn't have any option for me except to fill it up myself later. There was a storm coming in later, but I did beat that to get to my hotel. I didn't drive the rest of the day because I fell ill. I woke up early the next morning and drove to get medications. When I started the vehicle, the Check Engine and ABS alarms went off, telling me it was unsafe to drive. But it was early and I needed meds, so I went to get them. Later that day (Monday), after my training, I called filed a request for road side assistance. After waiting for 3 hours (near 7 pm) I started a chat, the chat was not a live assistance. Get a live assistant. They tell me it will take till 9 or 10 to get the replacement. I ask them to wait until tomorrow morning. They state that they will call me in the morning to pick up where we've left off. I let my training cadre know that I will have to wait for a vehicle the next morning and stay back for the transfer, since they won't let me leave the key with the front desk, in case I need to sign something. So, Tuesday, I slept in till 7, had breakfast, and waited. About 8:30, I decided, maybe I'll need to initiate the process again, and contact assistance... chat with computer "I need to transfer you" Chat with live assistant, "a rescue team will call you". 20 min later, get a call from the rescue team. They inform me they've contacted someone to perform the vehicle exchange (mind you not clearly, so I don't know if I'm waiting for someone to bring the new rental and a tow truck, or just the tow truck). This could take up to 6 hrs of my already missed work day. I do get a refreshed link so I know the tow driver and can call them. 3 hrs in, I call, and get "VM has not been set up". 1 hr passes, I call, and a garbled, unrecognizable answer. I start receiving text reminding me, that I need to be there for the vehicle exchange. no calls. Call the 3rd time, a lady picks up "oh, he is close, and he has the replacement vehicle". "Awesome, thank you. He arrives at noon with a Dodge Durango- heck of an upgrade! Pulls it off the truck, give me the keys and I get in. "Low Tire Pressure" is the first thing I see. I ask him if he has an air compressor. He says "It looks okay, just go to a gas station". I say fine, give him the keys to the equinox and ask if there is anything to sign. There isn't. Could have easily been taken care of with the front desk. I drive a block, and the tire pressure sensor seems to have reset, I'm good to go, take it back to the parking lot. This morning, get one of the other training cadre to ride with me "to balance my luck," but also take a 6 seater for today's field trip. The tire is now completely flat. This evening, after seeing that the spare is a donut, and not knowing the distance I'm driving tomorrow, I decide to call Avis, and tell them just to pick up the car. Start the call process again- computer- specialist- rescue team. Rescue team guy says he has someone lined up to get the vehicle between 6 and 7:30. He connects me with customer service to inquire getting a refund. I speak with them, after 10 minutes, they let me know they can't do anything until the vehicle has been returned, which, we know I can't do myself.... It's approx 8:50. At 8, I started trying all of my "Rescue" links to track where the tow driver was... All of them go back to the original assistance request. After 7 tries, they finally get someone to call me. He states "oh, yeah this has been picked up"... I'm not calling about that one. I'm calling about the new one that I can't track. He calls the tow company (doesn't give me the number). And then lets me know, they'll be here in another hour. The vehicle is going to towed tomorrow. Do not recommend Avis is SLC for anyone! read more

I booked a rental car with Payless who is evidently the same as Avis. In Salt Lake City they share a line. There are more than 25 of us in line, and two agents. They seem to spend about 15-20 minutes per person. This is horrible customer service, especially because there are a bunch of business travelers going to a conference AND it's Education Week at BYU I will never book with them again. read more

The experience wasn't perfect but far better than I've had at vehicle rental places. I had reserved a compact car for three days for $276 using credit card points with Chase. There was no line around 11 am on a Monday at the Avis counter at the Salt Lake City airport. The employee helped me right away, was largely friendly, and processed an upgraded vehicle for me to a Jeep Wrangler because of upcoming snowy conditions. He never told me it was a hybrid though! There was an unusually long wait where he just waited for 10 minutes in silence and didn't tell me what was going on but evidently he was waiting for someone to come up and hand him keys. Otherwise, the process was fairly smooth. I was told where to go (downstairs to the garage), which parking spot the vehicle was to be found, and how to exit. read more

Terrible experience here at this Avis. Ordered a full sized sedan but they struggled to supply the car I ordered and asked if I would take a Range Rover or Truck. Ended up sizing down to an intermediate car after about 30 minutes of waiting. Step it up Avis! They said they would refund me $50 but never did... Had to contact support and still hoping for the best. Never had a worse experience at any other Avis, just this one. read more

This was my first time renting a car in my entire life, and it was an absolutely terrible experience. I was definitely expecting to wait in line to get my car, and there were five people in front of me, and three people at the counter. This was no big deal at all. The person at the counter who helped me was named SKYE, and they were very helpful. I appreciated the directions that were given to go and find the car, and where to get the keys, etc. When I walked down to where the vehicle was, I found the vehicle easily. There were three gentlemen sitting in chairs in front of where the car was, and I wasn't sure how to get in and out of the space, or the parking lot for that matter. I tried to ask one of the guys for help, and he said what do you want?! I apologized and just asked for directions on getting out of the parking lot. Then, for some reason, they picked up their chairs and moved out of the way, and then glared at me. I wasn't expecting to drive forward, I was expecting to back up, but I assumed that because they moved that meant that that's the way I was supposed to go. I was given no directions, and ended up going to an area in the parking lot where they do car washes for all of the rental vehicles. I ended up getting stuck in a one-way only area, and thankfully somebody helped me get around so that I didn't crash the car into anything. As soon as I looked down and started driving, I noticed that the car was overdue for an oil change. The outside of the car was filthy, and it was kind of difficult to see outside of the windshield. I had to stop at a gas station to clean it. I thought that the cars were supposed to be clean when you receive them, but that was not the case. I had to call the company because I was returning the car a few days early, and the person on the other end of the line gave me so much attitude for it. My trip got cut early, so I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have to do anything extra to return the car. I'm also confused about the total bill For my rental because it was probably $50 less than the original quote, but I returned my car five days early. Sounds like a huge rip off, and I will never be renting from them again. read more

What couldn't improve? There are three employees for a line 50 people deep. We tried signing up as preferred members to skip the line but apparently you have to still go to the counter if you're a first time renter with them. We were in line for 1.5 hrs until we got to the counter. After giving them our confirmation number, their first question was, "Did you cancel your reservation?" That's terrifying. Now, we've been standing at the counter for a half hour and we're checked in but they said they only have 150 stalls downstairs and there either isn't an available stall to park the car we rented, or it's simply not ready for us yet. Seems all communication with the garage downstairs is via a text thread. They message stall numbers and screenshots of reservations back and forth. This is THE WORST car rental experience we have ever had and our five boys, who were excited to start their family vacation are all tired, hungry, and bored. Never again. We have now been waiting for our vehicle longer than the flight from Seattle took to get to SLC. read more

The worst car rental experience. We got off our plane in Salt Lake City and headed to the Avis rental desk with our Booking.com rental agreement/voucher in hand. When we got to the counter there was about 50 people in line and 2 agents. There was a QR code to pre-check which we tried. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for Booking.com reservations. The line moved at a snails pace and took 2.5hours to get waited on. During that time, we looked at the other rental companies who had similar lines but were moving efficiently. I was hesitant in booking a car with Avis after reading all the reviews in this location. However, they have the best price among all other rental companies and have similar not so good reviews. We landed around 8 pm and the airport was so alive which made me worry that i would either have to wait for a while or will not have a car like what the other reviews were saying... i was wrong! There were maybe 3 people ahead of me and 3 open counters. The other rental booths were busy as well. It only took me 5 minutes before I was helped, only to found out the preferred clients go straight down to the parking lot. Tip: sign up for it! It is worth it. we went down and was greeted right away, i was told that my car isnt available but was given the choice for a bigger car for the same price. Of course i said "Sure"! The reason for -1 star is the quality of the car seat that we got. All their car seats are stored in a cabinet and none looked clean. Each one of them are either stained, has tears or both. They looked gross and not been washed for months. I just picked the least gross and showered it with disinfectant. I hope avis will get this addressed. Return was quick and easy! read more

It's so nice that this Avis garage is walking distance from the airport. I booked my car when I arrived and I was till able to access the discounted rate which was nice. I was also given a complimentary upgrade being that the car in my spot was a jeep when I reserved a compact car, such a pleasant surprise. They were very hospital upon my return. If you are a preferred member, just walk on downstairs and pick up your car. When I arrived, the sedan that I wanted "wasn't available" although there are plenty of sedans there. The associate said he would look for one for me and give him 10 minutes, he did not look for anything. I did let him know that I saw one readily available after 20 minutes of him not coming back out for me in the heat. I got the sedan I wanted and went on my journey. The return process was seamless. On our visit to SLC we had a reservation with another company to rent our vehicle. After further thought and research, we wouldn't be landing until 11:45pm. This other location had hours until midnight. We decided to look at some other options in case we don't make it in time. Turns out our flight was delayed and we didn't land until after 12:30am. We thought this worked out well as Avis had a more affordable rental rate and were open later which accommodated our flight time better. We had reserved a Toyota Camry or similar. We have driven Camry's so we thought this would be a good vehicle to rent. We had some driving to do and it would be nice to do in a similar vehicle that also gets good gas mileage. As it turns out when we got to the counter, we were told they had no Camry's or similar vehicles available. In fact, they were almost all out of vehicles. Not sure how that works when you reserve a vehicle type, then it's not available? All they had left were Jeeps and a Suburban. Well our gas mileage dropped by at least a third and the size of our vehicle at least doubled. They did offer those other vehicle options at the same price however it would have been nice to receive the vehicle type we reserved. Returning the vehicle was a very simple process and the airport does have a gas station located on the property which is nice so our vehicle could be refilled before returning it. read more

I reserved a Camry 2 months in advance for a month-long, cross-country trip. Upon pick-up in SLC I was given a 4x4 Jeep and told there were no Camrys left. It cost me ~$480 in additional gas price for the trip. The Jeep broke down and had to be replaced in St. Louis. I was given another Jeep, this one with bald front tires. Upon returning the vehicle in SLC I asked to speak to the manager. She told me my full rental prices was reimbursed because of the break-down and messed-up reservation. She even showed me the computer screen with $0 balance and I took a picture of it....but, a few days later the full charge appeared on my credit card. I have receipts and photos to document this. I checked in my car 5 hours early than what the contract agreed upon. The AVIS gentleman that actually checked in our car asked if we could write him a review for customer service, we happily did. Fast forward 3 days later I get a text informing me that my car has not been checked in and that I will charged a late fee. So I called customer service (Nationally) and informed me everything would be take care of. Then just received another text the next day saying the car has still not been checked in. I called back customer service, was on the phone for over an hour. Sent it to another department to get resolved. Tried to call the local salt lake city location, could not get anyone to pick up the phone. Still resolving the issue. After waiting 2 1/2 hours the guy took my credit card and drivers license, noted I was a preferred member, gave me slip of paper, and told me to take it downstairs to get my car. Unhappy with the quality of customer service or shall I say lack of customer service. My husband and I arrived at SLC with a reservation. We were told they didn't have a vehicle available for our reservation and had a larger SUV. In all cases in which we've had this happen we have always been upgraded with no extra charge to us... we were told it would be $100 more per day. The gentleman who helped me didn't offer any solutions. I followed up by asking about possibly a smaller vehicle instead but was then told they had absolutely nothing. Made reservation over phone with New Zealand guy. Showed up to rental location with confirmation number and told they had no cars. The store lady said she would transfer my res. to the airport (20 min drive away). Got to airport, told the res. had NOT been transferred, told the price was now double ($200 to $400). Called customer support to get res transferred, was transferred but the Indian customer service rep put the WRONG destination address. Had ANOTHER call with customer support, got the dest. address corrected. Then airport told me they would not accept my debit card (only Credit Cards accepted). My price during all of this fluctuated from $200 (original quote) to $400 (airport quote to start over from scratch) then $275 (new quote with wrong dest address) then $265 (which I accepted out of frustration because Avis refused to honor the original reservation price). A short distance from the airport I got another flat, another 1-1/2 hours on side of freeway waiting for roadside assistance, got a third car. Missed whole business day meeting I went to SLC for. Convenient location and easy to bring our checked bags right down to the vehicle without having to go curbside to load bags.
