The Decks
David S.

Now this is one really impressive pub. In fact the thing I like the most about this pub is the beer garden, otherwise known as 'The Decks', to the point that I am always tempted to stop off here when I am driving past for a drink, and normally I do. I actually don't think I have been beyond the decks because that part of the pub is simply really cool. The last time I was here I even noticed that they have craft beer on tap as well as a decent range of ciders (though I was really annoyed when my friend ordered the most expensive cider in the fridge, namely because it was my shout). I know that they have pokies and a sports bar, but they are in another building so they can be pretty much ignored. Oh, and they serve a pretty decent schnitzel as well.

Someone threw and egg at me when I took this photo

It's competitive. But, it takes a smart hotel owner to realise that all you need to do to compete is be creative and cook amazing food. That is what The Highway does so well. Just look at the photos! Whether you want something more al la carte or your regular pub affair; The food is great here! In fact, so is the wine & beer lists. They stock a great selection of craft beer and boutique wines. High fives for Alpha Box & Dice! Nice! Be on the look out for the seasonal menus on their social media. Game Season being a favourite over the last two years. The Chefs here love to be creative. My last visit I chowed down on an Alpaca Cheeseburger and it was amazing! It was very similar to beef, just a little lighter. You probably could not tell the difference if you did not know beforehand. This pub does have gaming. But let's face it; most of them do these days. However, what is good for people like me who do not like gaming, is that it is in a completely different wing to the restaurant and front bar. I really like that! During the summer months this beer garden is a great weekend hang out! There is an outdoor bar, plenty of space for all of your mates to have a good Sunday Session. Plus a super big tele if you wanna watch the footy. I rate this pub really well. If I lived closer, I would visit more often. Check it out!

Our big issue lies with the management and the food. We had not eaten at all that day due to work, so on the first night, we thought to eat at the hotel and ordered two chicken parmies-what could go wrong? The schnitzels were barely cooked, and the sauce was very bland, though it came with a generous serving of chips. We ordered our food around 6:30 PM. Within six hours (by midnight), my partner became extremely ill, and an hour or so after that, she couldn't stop projectile vomiting Eventually, It subsided, but the next morning (Friday), she ate some toast and went back to vomiting violently, leading us to go straight to the hospital. After talking with a doctor and after many drugs, we were told she was suffering from extreme food poisoning. Once we learned this, we instantly knew there was only one possible source: our hotel When we got out, we informed the hotel manager that night. She took all our detalls and sald she wasn't the manager who deals with this and that we should come back the morning of our checkout when the right manager. would be in. Upon checkout, that manager said the same thing and assured us someone would call us. Well, that was at least a week ago, and we have heard nothing. We have attempted to handle this situation face-to-face with the hotel, but communication is a two-way street, and I am extremely disappointed. The worst part of all this is the dinning area and out door area is beautiful and cosy and the meal looked absolutely delicious but looks are deceiving. The images below were of the actual meal my partner ate too So, long story short: don't stay here, and definitely don't eat here.

It was delicious and tender but was served lukewarm to cold (on both occasions). I'm not sure if this is how it's intended to be served but the consensus is that it'd be better served warm. The chips are yummy. We ordered these both times too. And the lamb with rice and papadam. The vegetable platter was yummy though not everyone's cup of tea. Meanwhile the jarlsberg arancini were delicious even though they didn't taste like jarlsberg. The prawn and cured salmon pizza was loved by some and disliked by others. Beer garden is amazing. As soon as word gets out, this place is going to get very busy. Great live music. Great choice of seating (stools, seats, undercover, in the sun), HUGE TV, awesome atmosphere, nice range of wines. Staff were a little on the inexperienced side but I assume they're just new and in training. Overall, two great experiences. We'll be back again.
