My whole family loves the Avon - you can actually enjoy yourself watching great movies, surrounded by people who love great movies in an environment that helps transport you to what is on the screen. The theater from top floor, to theater to bathrooms - impeccably clean. The snacks are snacking... The popcorn (butter, salt) is real popped right there. Wine, beer if that's your thing. The Avon Theatre is cute, old school theater that conjures up images of those Norman Rockwell days. The decor is pleasantly old fashioned, a place that is really as far away from the multiplex as you can get Oh, and the seats are old school too, and depending on what you're looking for in a theater, this a blessing or a curse. I personally like sit in movie theater's power recliners, so the Avon's standard seating was a little too old school for me. However, the rest of the theater was outstanding, and I would definitely see a movie here again. read more

NON-MEMBERS BEWARE! I had never been to this theatre before. I found online that a pre-release movie was playing. I paid $10 to park in garage only to find that upon entering the theatre's lobby, the show was exclusive to members only of Avon Theatre. There was no option for non-members to pay; no seats allocated for paying customers. So disappointing. And I'm out $10 for parking for 2 minutes. read more

Independent Theater in downtown Stamford. Shows a selection of independent films and box office hits. Apparently there is a discount of you are a member. Steep seating. Which is nice since no chance of having your view blocked should a basketball player decide to come sit in front of you. It's an older theater. But seats were comfortable. Sound was good. read more

This place can be really hit or miss. Film slate is usually good, although sometimes they'll hold a film for 2-3 months (like Moonlight) and sometimes a film will disappear quickly with no notice (like The Innocents). But their slate is a pretty good mix, especially the cult classics and the foreign films they bring in with other groups. Popcorn is amazing, and the staff is kind and informative. I recently (last Thursday) attended a French Cinema event for the film Custody. First the projectionist played the short twice, and then the entire feature film had this really off putting colour to it. Overheard on my way out that it was an unannounced technical problem, not an artistic decision. Kind of a shame that I could't experience the film as it should be, and really threw a dark gloom on an otherwise charming little theater. However I would like to give them another shot, but maybe on a weekend when business apparently matters more than a one off weekday event. read more

We are so lucky to have the Avon in Stamford, Connecticut. Wonderful foreign films, documentaries, Hollywood classics and the newest films. I think I have been to this theater at least twice a week for several years. It pays to be a member! The staff is very friendly. Best premier showings. No better homemade popcorn anywhere! I love the nicely restored theater and they almost always have a movie I want to see. I'm a big documentary fan and almost without fail a documentary I want to see is booked there. I've attended films where they have the filmmaker there with interesting q and a sessions after, I always find fascinating and really helpful in understanding the film on a deeper level. Love this theater! Great to see indie films. Theater 1 is historic and beautiful with awesome high-back chairs, a large screen, and good acoustics. It looks like a traditional theater you would see a show at. The other theater is much tinier and "normal". I hate when I don't get theater 1! The staff are great and a good selection of staple concession as well as Keurig coffee and a few healthy snacks. Great location for grabbing dinner - but horrible parking. Dear Avon Theatre, Hello darling, where have you been all my life? You are an absolutely charming independent theatre in downtown Stamford. I cannot count how many times I've driven by your doors and never wondered about the movies you had available to the public. How could I have done so, when the multiplexes of America were depressing and overpriced? I finally landed on your doorstep when I discovered that a movie I really wanted to see was playing on your screens. You were decked out nicely for the holidays, and your petite lobby, complete with a poster from the film "The African Queen," is charming. I shelled out $11 for my movie ticket which, although not totally low-priced, was a far cry from the nearly $20 I forked over to watch Daniel Craig blow stuff up as 007, all on a big IMAX screen. I will admit, for all my carping, it was nice to have some cash left in my wallet after a visit to your ticket booth, after all. I also appreciated that you have senior and student discounts on tickets, although the student discount rates don't apply to Fridays or weekends. I'm not quite sure what that's all about, because I doubt unemployed/underemployed students will be blessed with a sudden influx of money three days a week while it is simultaneously denied them the other four, so perhaps a change in policy is in order. But, I digress. I cannot emphasize enough how impressed I was with the quaint loveliness of all your surroundings. Old movie posters everywhere! A small snack stand, complete with fresh popcorn! Armchairs and a bookcase also provided a nice accent to the space. And then, of course, there was the theatre itself. I believe there are only two screens on your premises, although I could be wrong. The theatre I was in had lovely shadowboxes that were lit throughout the film, and a recess filled with a vase of fake flowers. When it was time for the movie to begin, a curtain pulled back to reveal the screen, which I thought was a nice throwback to an earlier era. Mercifully, the audience was subjected to only two previews before the screening of the film began. I will never forgive the metroplexes of America for making me sit through preview after preview for the umpteenth "Alien vs. Predator vs. Human Being," or "Die Hard: Part 25" or some such nonsense. Shudder. Oh, Avon Theatre, I am so glad that I discovered you, your clean facilities, comfortable seating, gracious manner of showing movies, and your dedication to bringing independent, quality films, both domestic and foreign, to the fine residents of Stamford, Conn., and the surrounding area. The Avon! *sigh* What can I say! I was so happy when I heard this place was opening back up, and it hasn't let me down once. The Avon always plays the best art, foreign, and indie cinema. I love when they show the classics as well. This place is great to see guest speakers, filmmakers, and celebrities introduce films and talk to the audience. Ticket prices are about what every other theatre around here charges, but the atmosphere is so much better than the multiplexes (I think the Avon has a student discount, if you show your ID). I love walking downstairs to the ladies "powder room". It feels like I've taken a step back in time to classier times when people dressed up to go see a film. I really like the Avon... It's small... It's dusty... But they hold really cool exclusive events and show a lot of independent movies. Also the atmosphere is quite classy and always makes me feel under dressed... Which is a good thing. It makes going to the movies fun. The theater is very comfortable, and inviting. I saw a poster for 'The African Queen' when we got inside and I got giddy. We inquired about a membership and fell in love with the decor. We were here to see 'The Black Swan" and we weren't disappointed. Before the movie started we were able to peruse some artbooks about the noir style and look at the myriad theatrical posters on hand. This is a place I really want to spend a lot of time in. The actual theater itself was clean and well maintained. The restrooms were in good shape and checked regularly. I couldn't find anything at all out of place and entire building felt like it was there to witness cinema and theater history. Share your love of moving art with the world and support the Avon. I had the pleasure of seeing a movie at the Avon Theater in Stamford, CT. What a treat! That's what you get when you watch a movie at the Avon Theater! Imagine being able to use a time travel machine and going back to the 1930's! Definitely fun to dress up and have date night at this theater! I have a very love/hate relationship with this movie theater. At times their ticket price and attitude is a bit much, especially after they narrowed down their window for student and senior discounts. Luckily, this theater makes up for that and then some with their events often showcasing obscure but endearing cult films and they arrange screenings of movies you'd never think of watching in a theater such as The Muppet Movie. They also are able to arrange a pretty impressive list of guests at their special screenings. Its nowhere near the quality of the Art House theaters in New York City but considering its the only choice for Stamford, CT it does an admirable job keeping independent and unconventional film scene alive. This place is a great old movie theater , that now shows First-Run movies, Art House, and Cult films. It was once a standard, single screen movie house, but has been converted into a twin cinema. Whoever programs the movies here has excellent taste. There is a salon located in the lower level, with easy chairs and a small library of books on cinema. Very tastefully decorated. read more

The Avon Theater is a jewel to have in Stamford. Very often the films are excellent, although for awhile they didn't play any foreign films. I wrote to them about this and had an almost immediate response from the person in charge of booking movies. He told me the very sad news that the audience for (news) foreign films-- primarily European films, had pretty much dried up completely. I confirmed by looking at programs at indie movies houses in NYC. But then, for some reason, within a few months, gradually, more foreign films began to re-appear at the Avon. Now it's a mix of 75% indies and maybe 25% foreign or other small non-European indie films. Anyway, the Avon is a fabulous movie house and I am so glad it is here in my home town. read more

The Avon has by far the most intelligent and diverse "independent and art cinema" programming around. With Gene Wilder on the Board of Directors and a never-ending stream of directors and actors making an appearance for lectures or Q&A after screenings, the Avon's membership is a modest $100 per couple per year. For that, you get free tickets, invitations to private screenings and special events and $4 off the regular ticket price per person (usually $10). If you go there enough - and I do since it's the only place that's been showing quality films lately - you do save a bunch. A couple of weeks ago, I introduced my 18 year old son to a classic Carry Grant/ Carole Lombard movie, and he was impressed with the interesting plot line, and smart snarky humor (his trademark). He now wants to see more like it. The Avon is a true Stamford treasure. read more

What an experience! Walking into the Avon Theatre was like stepping into a time capsule. Long has the beauty of red drapes and murals on the walls faded in to state-of-the-art acoustical ceilings and sound proof walls which have their place in our highly technical world of movie going in the 21th century, but it lacks the elegance of the majestic theater of the early golden age of movies. We arrived at the Avon Theatre to be greeted by a warm and friendly face who remembered us coming in earlier that week to survey the theater and make sure it is handicapped accessible. As instructed, we had called early to make sure the showing of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", was going to be in the main room which is accessible with a wheelchair. They have two showing rooms and we were grateful the main room was handicapped friendly since it is an classic older building. After purchasing our tickets we stopped at the concession stand to stock-up for the movie. Never mind we just came from Quattro Pazzi, Milk Duds and Twizzlers are still necessary for movie-going. I have to admit to being a little leery of opening my Milk Duds as I was expecting them to be stale. Shame on me, they were the freshest Milk Duds I think I have ever had, along with the Twizzlers. As we made our way into the main showing room, it reminded me of the elegance we have lost in our modern world. My husband nestled into the overstuff reclining theatre seat as I got settled beside him in my wheelchair. There was more than ample room for the chair making it a comfortable experience for me. I was also able to sit half-way up in the theater instead of all the way in the front or all the way in the back where most theaters put the wheelchair openings. It made for an exceptional viewing experience for both of us. I was not able to use the facilities because they are downstairs. It is a classic older building and is not equipped with an elevator so if stairs are an issue for you, you will need to consider using facilities before you arrive at the theater. We only live a few blocks away, so for us, this isn't a huge issue, just one others might need to be aware of before coming. My greatest disappointment is my husband's description of the waiting area. No plastic stall doors, or automated soap dispensers but instead a sitting area with sofas and a fireplace, bookcases and wood, which took us back to a more civil time. We look forward to our next movie experience at the Avon Theatre. It made for a comfortable and relaxing date. No rushing around, no standing in crowds, just a leisurely moving watching experienced that ended a perfect evening. read more

I'm glad that the theater isn't profit-oriented but I don't feel that I should have to pay for a membership to get your better services. The fact that I'm a regular customer should be enough to get the best deals. In wealthy Stamford, I know that the annual fee isn't much in the scheme of things.....but if you have to pay a fee in order to get a discount, you aren't really saving anything. For students and retired persons, a matinee price makes a big difference. I also find it a bit affected when people show up in tuxedos for your Oscar film screenings.....it's a movie in Connecticut, not the Academy Awards. I guess some people have to feel like they are big fish even if they live in a small bowl. The fact that this place is non-profit and still charges more than the similar Garden Cinema seems odd....If they had cheaper matinee prices, they would have more customers and be more in the black. The theater is usually 90% empty so what do they have to loose by trying a matinee price?? read more

What a charming place! I came here to see an independent film that I was sure I would have to travel to New York to see. The tickets are a little steep at $12 a person for nonmembers but the concession stand has reasonably priced snacks and free refills on popcorn and drinks. The space is well kept and spacious and the staff is very friendly. They also offer same day discounts on neighboring restaurants, making it perfect for a date night. read more

Terrific art theater that always seems to get the best speakers and the best films. An example: I saw George Clooney's "Good Night and Good Luck" at the Avon, and was surprised by Fred Frenley (one of the biopic's characters)'s wife. What's most convenient for me and my 2 year-old puppy Ava (half terrier, quarter chi, quarter poodle) is that the Avon Theatre is right across the street from my apartment. Some days Ava sits out on the balcony and complains how we don't go enough. Fair statement, however she also doesn't realize that she likes to sit inside and watch really terrible films like The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and Men in Black with my roommate, who has equally terrible taste in movies. Not only that, his taste in music is just as bad. 'Big Willy Style' is one of his favorite albums. I hope Ava isn't into that type of music. She hasn't been exposed to it, so I might never know. Either way, the Avon is a fantastic place to see indie and documentary films that are actually meaningful and worth watching. Go there instead of sitting indoors and watching The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and Men in Black with your 2 year-old puppy. read more

We finally became Members of the Avon this year (senior couple = $100), which not only gives us discounts on every film but has also allowed us to see quite a lot of free sneak previews. We've really been enjoying it. We've wound up seeing almost all the Oscar nominees, as well as other smaller films that have been very enjoyable. We've tried out films we weren't especially drawn to but concluded were excellent and well worth our time--at the discount price of $7.00 per ticket. For residents in the area who enjoy films, I highly recommend becoming a member. read more
