I did hair coloring here with Karly. To be fair, she had a mess to work with due to the state of my hair - my previous coloring experience (not at Axis) left me with uneven blonde highlights breaking around my face as they were over-bleached. Because of the bad prior experience, I was skeptical and held high expectations. So I came in not knowing exactly what I wanted, but looking for someone who could recover the color of my "patched" hair gently.
Reception: 1 star out of 5. My friend recommended me the place and I submitted an online request for an appointment. I was very clear in my email that I did not know what I wanted, but was looking for professional and style advice. After 10+ emails with the reception (while I asked for a phone call to save my time), I was glad to have a phone conversation with Karly and the scheduling call from the receptionist the day after. The receptionist said the work would take 4 hrs, 4 pm through 8 pm. I stated clearly a couple of times that 4 pm is not possible, since that is when I can get off work, and said I could be there by 4:15 pm at the earliest or better on the weekend. I was told that Karly doesn't do weekends, so the receptionist would put a note that I would be arriving after 4:15 pm.
I got delayed on the way and made it to Axis by 4:25 pm. (10 mins later than the earliest time I said I could make it initially). That is when I got to know that they already scheduled someone for 4:30 pm or so and Karly was NOT aware of my real arrival time, as the receptionist never put in the promised note. Hence, they decided it was appropriate to make me wait until after 5 pm for the second client to receive their service timely. No one apologized but offered coffee to make my wait time better. This was not Karly's fault in any way but was not the best customer service of Axis.
Hair coloring service: 4 out of 5 stars for the end result. When Karly finally made it to me I was asked what I want to be done. Again, after a dozen of emails with me saying I needed advice and I would not be specifically telling what the result should look like, I was surprised. The only thing I specifically asked for was to cover up the grey hairs that appeared here and there. Karly assessed the state of my hair and suggested blonde highlights mostly around my face, toner, and a dry haircut ($300 for dying and $60 for a haircut, rounded up to $400 max). I agreed to the max, assuming 4 hrs of complex work on my hair, use of bleach and toner, and a good haircut... The work took 2 hrs or less (if I remember correctly) since it started late way after 5 pm and I was out by 7:30ish. The blonde highlights were done, but toner was not used as Karly suggested that she loved the result as is, and the haircut was probably something like 5-7 minutes. I only asked if my grey hairs were covered up. Response - yes, hidden in the blonde highlights.
Then I went to the reception desk and got to know that 1/2 of the initially assessed work time with less material used (no toner) and a very basic refreshment of the hair edges for a few minutes cost me $400 exactly... I was also asked for a tip. I am still puzzled as to why exactly I paid such a premium. All of my girlfriends (including the one who recommended the place, were shocked to get to know what was asked of me), as in their experience full hair bleach with multi-coloring was $450 max at this very place. It was not about the price when I came, but I would expect not to pay double just because I said that I was not concerned price-wise.
Last but not least. The blonde is beautiful. I think Karly is good at what she is doing. Moreover, my hair looks healthy, so no damage whatsoever. BUT. My grey hair was not covered up, unfortunately. It's there, pretty visible. I reached out to Axis to advise on this and received a call-back timely.
This is probably not the best place for timely service and professional style advice. They are more comfortable with replicating a picture that you would bring. Pricing - you judge, but I am feeling cheated. read more
