I would not recommend this restaurant. I asked the owner lady if she had scallops as I didn't see it on the menu - she replied yes so I order 4 pieces of scallop nigri and one scallop sashimi. The sashimi was one piece cut in the 4 thin slices - very tasty but very small. The nigri came cooked to my surprise. when I asked the owner, she said it is not fresh so we need to sear it for safety. I was not impressed to be told this. moreover, the rice had a bite and inedible. when the bill came, this was the biggest shock. She charged me the equivalent of £25 for ONE piece of scallop sashimi on the basis that it came from Canada. She did not warn me of the price when I ordered and further dos lot share that the nigiri scallops would be defrosted. why can Sushi Leblon down the road served 100 times fresher and better sushi and sashimi for a fraction of the price? My advice is DON'T go to Azumi unless you want inferior food for exorbitant prices. The owner is very dishonerable. I paid, left and will never return. read more

Authentic Japanese sushi place. The chefs are Japanese so this gives you the first good impression of good seafood! And it was. Great selection of fish: yellowtail, tuna, sea bass and so on. The place is not that big, I would recommend you to eat directly at the bar table with the sushiman preparing your meal. I would recommend also to order just sashimi & niguiri, the rolls were not that good. The service was not so good, they only speak Portuguese so it was quite difficult to understand them. So far, the best Japanese restaurant I've been to in Rio. They serve authentic Japanese food. It is the only place so far that does a proper soup based Udon (which I love) and delicious cawanmushi. Actually I do like almost everything on their menu (and some off the menu....) I have been here many times, in large groups of 8 to 10 (call and book in advance, you can reserve a room - i think there are two available - tatami style, but I think they do have a minimum charge to it), and other times just 2-3 of us. It gets really crowded after 8pm so go early (I think they open at 7pm). But be prepared to pay. Two cawanmushi would cost you about R$50. Their unagi sushi is R$40 per plate (wasn't sure if it was a special unagi, but still....). Udon starts at R$50 and goes upwards. read more

Okay wow. Super chill and quiet spot in Copacabana. The sushi is so good. We got the lunch bento bowls. U can choose sashimi or nigiri as the main part of the dish. We got one if each the sides were so good from the baked egg to the stewed daikon/mushroom. Highly recommend read more

if you are looking for decent japanese food from a family run restaurant in the Zona Sul area, check this place out. Its not one of those modern fusion fancy places. they stick to traditional simple good food. Area is small, so either go early if you are big group, or be ready to wait in line. They are only open for dinner. They have around 4-5 rooms for groups, which is nice if you want something a bit more private. there is a cover charge per person for the room (R$15). If not, there are tables in the downstairs space - around maybe 6-7, max 10. and you can sit at the mini bar area. They have traditional items, and menus in english, portuguese and japanese. I will say that service in the room areas is a bit slow, merely for the fact that once they bring in the food, no one comes back in to check up on you to see if you need anything more. So, we had to open and get out and look for the staff. If you seat at the tables, service is faster as the waiters are usually all around. Additionally, if you are looking for green tea ice cream for dessert....they dont have it. read more

Belezaa!! In-laws brought me here...hopefully you speak Portuguese because Azumi doesn't speak English! It's off the beaten path in Copa, very true to Japanese as you won't find any cream cheese on the menu. Incredible cuts of fish, I sampled so much I don't even remember what I had, but I will say the carpaccio-style polvo(octopus) was amazing!!! This was my favorite. We had one of the rooms where you take your shoes off and sit on the floor. Be careful because reserving these rooms you have a specific time limit, ours was from 7-9:30! Mid to low quality sushi sold here for top quality prices. We got one of the combos that came with 45 pieces of sushi. The tuna and salmon was fine but certainly nothing special. From there it was all downhill. Namarado and dorado and some type of snapper were included and while fresh, they just aren't very flavorful fish and I would argue not appropriate for sushi. The crab and shrimp nigiris were actually awful- poor quality and flavor. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and it was one of the worst I've ever had. They use what I would describe as a fake sriracha sauce and I think some poor quality togarishi spice and it truly sucked but since I paid 12 bucks for it I choked it down. My wife got a squid dish that was entirely devoid of flavor. Atmosphere is nothing special and service was fine. I won't be back. read more

This place is overrated. It's a traditional place in Rio but the food is nothing special. Tried the shrimp gyoza, the dough was very heavy although the filling was good. Sushi/sashimi combo was very blend, basic. It definitely doesn't justify the price. The ambiance also not very appealing. The day I went there was a mix of sewer and fish smell..... The service was the only outstanding thing. Waitresses very helpful and doing their best to accommodate everybody's need. I would give 1 star for this place but due to the service I'm giving 2, anyhow, won't come back here. read more

Definitely had authentic flavor when I first walked in - several of the staff are ethnic japanese, maybe owner/operator? Also had two large groups of japanese business types show up for the private rooms. All that said, underwhelmed. Ordered octopus/seaweed salad in vinegar, and it was drowning in vinegar. Chirashi was meh. Fish was fine (it doesn't require skill to source decent fish) but the rice was not vinegared. C'mon, man... The service was bad, the portions small, the food average and the prices ridiculously expensive. I won't be going back for sure. First off, we sat at a table for about 5-10 minutes before anyone came over to ask what we wanted to drink. Then the waitress did not know what the dishes contained, she could not explain what came in the soup I asked about. When I asked her what kind of fish came with the 10 piece sashimi, all she could say was "variedades". It was priced at R$50, but if you asked for specific fish, like tuna and salmon, they charged an extra 25%. So 10 pieces of sashimi was R$62.50. We started with the shimeji, which I pointed at the item on the menu while I ordered, as my Portuguese pronunciation is still not very good. It was priced at R$32. The waitress asked us if we wanted it hot or cold, and we said hot. The portion was extremely small, so after it came we ordered another one. They brought us the mixed mushrooms, not shimeji, so we had to send that back and wait longer for the correct order. When I got the bill, they had charged us R$55 for each shimeji, a total of R$110 for mushrooms! When I got the menu back and showed the waitress the R$32 price for the shimeji, she turned the page and pointed to a different mushroom item that was R$55 - any type mushroom that was hot and cooked in butter. But she never told us that when we ordered it, either time! The caipisake was small and not very strong. The udon soup was flavorful, but again, a small bowl with only two small pieces of seafood along with one shrimp. I guess tourists keep Azumi in business, because unless you like throwing lots of money at average food why would a local return? A truly horrible experience. read more

Azumi has to be the most ridiculously overpriced Japanese food I have ever eaten. My daughter and I paid the equivalent of US$ 90 for a small sushi and small sashimi plus edamame. Quality was ok not special but it's way overpriced. There are much better options in Rio. I will never go back to Azumi. read more

The food at Azumi would likely warrant five stars but the setting and service, even for what is essentially a hold in the wall, are simply not good enough. Specifically, with regard to the service and setting, I'd compare to Sushi Guen in Sao Paulo, also a simple place but where waiters know something about the food they are serving, and one doesn't feel completely squeezed despite the small size.
