    J. Crew. The name conjures images of pastel rowers with perfect teeth. Or, if you search within a…read morebit deeper, a hip hop clique. My first contact with J. Crew was in the very late nineties. Steven's sister had modeled in a J. Crew catalog. The endless sky was behind her in her photo, and her arms were wide, either to embrace the world or show off the Crew sweater. I wanted blonde hair, but I wanted the sweater even more. Over the years, I acquired some J. Crew here and there from thrift stores. I didn't purposefully seek it out, but I didn't reject it, either. I never shopped specifically at J. Crew, as it seemed like a parallel universe in which one had to be J-y or Crew-y. I was neither. But Factory, Crew's li'l sis, has mostly affordable wares. Factory has sales like you cannot believe. Two months ago, I ordered earrings. Two weeks ago, I ordered earrings. Today, I ordered earrings. Ten bucks on sale. Shipping is free. Take that husband. Take that society. I went to the outlet in Asheville last spring. It was so peaceful that you could fall asleep on tees that had been folded by what I thought were cyborgs. The employees are sweet and regular, like us. There was a pretentious lady with a lap dog in the outlet, which seemed slightly surreal, but that was it for regality. Another woman let me and my husband know that she wanted to see the earrings, too, which is again slightly surreal because in my universe I just politely wait for a browser to finish. The layout of Factory is great. It is easy to get to stuff, but tough to make a decision. Everything there is cute, dammit. If you saw the amount of secondhand, quirky stuff that I have from J. Crew and Li'l Crew, you would bow down to me. OK, some is new. One needs a black lace printed sweatshirt with short sleeves. Needs it. Not hopes for it. Needs it. On sale for fifteen bucks, yeah, you need it. Plus, the sales associate told me that I can rack up points in order to save more money. Yep. Future self: bedecked with fake fur earrings and tees adorned with platypuses. (That's a hint for Factory to produce stuff like that.) I dream of one day being able to wear the J. Crew pants that were created by an edgy fairy and cached away, awaiting most likely teens who are clumsy with foodstuffs. I think of the 2014 J. Crew catalog that I recently stole away from my mother's house, because she has taste and I love neon in weird places. Whether you wear J. Crew or J. Crew Factory, new or used, people can see you comin' from a mile away. And I love that.
