We met our tour guide Jon and 5 others joined the tour as well. The tour price included the fare on the lightrail and bus to get to Dachau. It was really nice to not have to worry about the times and connections. Not that it would have been a huge deal, but when on vacation, I like to worry less about logistics. Jon was very knowledgeable and I am so glad that I did use InMunich Tours because it was nice to have someone talk about the key points of the Dachau Memorial. We were told to arrive 1 hour before our reservation but 30 minutes would have been plenty of time. We were in a small group and our guide made sure that all of us were settled in each room before starting. She gave us a brief overview before starting the prerecorded audio narration. I left feeling more knowledgeable about King Ludwig's childhood and family life at Hohenschwangau. The tour took about 30 minutes and there was not much to see afterwards. We had thought we needed 3 hours for this castle but the walk up was short, but 2 hours for everything was plenty of time for us.

She gave a great history of the castle and the family and when I asked a few more questions she gave even more insight. She was fantastic! The castle itself if magnificent to see. The rooms are very elaborate and the paintings are so clear. The bridge is worth walking to for the view but be prepared to wait. We came in July and I think queued for over 30 mins. Walk to the far end of the bridge if you can (less busy and a slightly better view of the castle). Definitely worth visiting and another site off my bucket list!

After hearing about the treasures in a magnificent baroque palace very near our hotel, we decided…read moreto invest part of our Saturday in Augsburg there. The first disappointment was not being able to buy the tickets with our credit card - another sign that those in charge of some tourist attractions in Germany are still very provincial. We opted for the audio guide - a big mistake. Audio guides should be a help for visitors to see things they might miss, but this guide was full of names and dates without nearly enough info about the actual pictures we were looking at or the rooms we walked through. Too much of the art museum seemed to be in a state or renovation with poorly lit paintings in the gallery part and a weird kind of open heating system spewing out smoke in the monastery part attached to the palace. Distracted by all the oddities, we ended up missing one of the most famous paintings: Albrecht Dürer's portrait of Jakob Fugger, a very rich merchant from Augsburg's time in the limelight in the 16th century. Only from the outside could we appreciate the length of the structure with the palace-monastery extension taking up an entire big block. At least the rococo ballroom with its mirrors and gilt walls was impressive, maybe especially so since we were there alone on a brilliantly sunny Saturday in early February. At least we could imagine the room also impressing Marie Antoinette, who evidently danced here for the palace-warming party a few hundred years ago. After an hour, we'd seen the whole place but then had to wait for someone to open up the room where we had to leave our bags. The café seemed more a parody with the couple of small tables and very uncomfortable looking chairs in a room next to the bookstore/ticket office, so we chose instead to rest our feet and our ears in the sunshine outside gazing at the gardens, which themselves seemed somewhat modest for a magnificent baroque palace, but then we had lowered our expectations sufficiently by the end of our hour in the Schaetzlerpalais.

just another church?…read more Maybe we've just seen one church too many on our travels or are spoiled by living in a city with a world-famous cathedral, but we were disappointed by the plain interior and the stained glass, which we had expected would be far more impressive. We had a hard time finding an entrance - the church seemed to have been put together in an architecturally haphazard way and as we later read was indeed changed again and again. We wandered around a bit, was able to overhear some interesting details about the destruction of the place during World War II, but after a look at the cloister, left to continue our visit in Augsburg. Maybe we should've tried to join a tour of the cathedral or maybe we should've just skipped both the church and this overrated mid-size Bavarian city altogether.

Tour of Augsburg: a bit too exotic, a bit too long to cover the sights…read more In the hope that we'd receive a good overview of the important sights in Augsburg we booked a two-hour walk (offered daily by the Tourist-Information Office) entitled Auf den Spuren der Fugger durchs goldene Augsburg (Following the Footsteps of the Fuggers). The very large group of interested tourists was split into three and we took the exotic tour guide, who introduced herself as originally from China but having lived in Augsburg for a few years. And in the next two hours we managed to see the sights: the clever building Stadtmetzg where 17th century butchers were able to keep meat cool, dispose of garbage, and offer meat for sale to a growing population - probably the most elegant looking butchers hall we'd ever seen; the outside of the simple house where Berthold Brecht was born; a tour of the famous Fuggerei with houses created for the poor by Augsburg's very rich Fugger family; assorted facades and streets and fountains and statues in between; and then at last the Golden Hall at the top of Augsburg's Town Hall as finishing touch. We sometimes had a hard time understanding our guide, who spoke heavily accented German. And some of the interesting cultural differences between China and German she mentioned were unfortunately lost in too many names and dates and details. The group shrunk as it got colder and the tour got longer, but we stuck it out until the very end and then earned our beer and very late lunch in the basement of Augsburg's Town Hall, exhausted and ready then to check Augsburg off for good of our German-cities-to-see list.
