Great new built out space with super bar food, and service. Best place in the area besides Max's on Long Lake.

Nice local bar with a good variety of food. The staff is always friendly. I've had the baked fish sandwich, the fish fry and pizzas all are generally good. My friends like the Thursday night ribs. Food prices are reasonable and the liquor/drink choices are good. They have a few different specials during the week. Always a good place to watch a Wisconsin game. read more

Staff were amazing. Small variety of tap beer, typical small town bar menu. Loved the homemade WI bar pizza, wouldn't order the burger again but that's ok! Ignore Yelp directions and use Google. Yelp had this place marked in the middle of nowhere and, in the dark with heavy snow, we almost turned around thinking this place didn't exist. But the bar is smart and put signs up on the roads leading to it so we knew it had to be somewhere. It's much further down the road, right on the lake, you won't miss it. This is a great little place along the Ice Age Trail (connecting road segment). A few tap beers, great burgers, friendly staff. And a much needed glass of ice water when I hiked. You can boat in, too. It's located on Chain Lake. read more

When you're up north (of Bloomer) this is your place for great bar and grill food. This place on Chain Lake has been here for decades, but the current owners have fine-tuned the art of a good variety of meats, seafood and pizza with excellent service, at a fair price. Not a fancy place, so you'll feel right at home in your lake casual clothes. There's a big bar when you enter from the parking lot, expanded dining area this year, and the outdoor deck overlooks the lake and docks where you can tie up your boat. In their remodeling this summer, they've removed the pinball machines, a fixture for 25 years! A tradition for my wife and me is the shrimp dinner and a Sprechers root beer--it's enough to just share! read more

We have been coming to the Backwoods since I was a kid. It has changed owners a few times, but each time we visit it remains fantastic. They have a HUGE bar and it is decorated with dollar bills pinned all over. My little niece got a kick out of them! They have a game room and a family room better for groups with young children (we had a group of 10) and were seated immediately. The family room looks out over a lake and there are several cabins that can be rented near by as well since it is also considered a resort. Great bar food menu, and being in Wisconsin, the cheese is the best. We always order a few Munchies of onion rings, cheese curds, etc. to share before our meal. Our family has pretty much tried everything on the menu at this point, but our go-to favorites are the Backwoods Burger and the California Burger. For $2 more you can make it a basket with your choice of potato & coleslaw. They have more "dinner" options as well as pizza, but when we go to the Backwoods we want a burger. This year I got the California Burger cheese, lettuce, avocado slices, and sauteed mushrooms. It was fantastic, but I might try it with a grilled chicken breast instead next year. They are worth the trip, since it's a bit out of the way, but you may see a bear along your way which would make it all worth it! read more

Just plain fun and so Wisconsin! - Whether it's one of the ubiquitous rural bars, or the unique concept of a 'supper club,' there is something special about the atmosphere of these eateries and drinkeries. The Backwoods nails the former perfectly. You know that you are welcome as soon as you walk in and hear a cheery "Hi, how are ya?" called from the bartender. Delightful! It takes a moment to let your eyes figure out the décor and layout. This place was designed by lots of people having fun. Just take a look at the ceiling, hear the laughter from the bar patrons, and you'll understand. Being there for lunch, we moved past the barroom and into the dining room which has lots of windows overlooking the lake. Nice! The cheerful bartender was also our waitress. We felt that she really wanted for us to enjoy ourselves and have a good meal. We Did! We started off with an order of fried cheese curds and some good cold beer to get us set for the burgers and chicken strips to come. Among the three of us we had both fries and onion rings as sides in addition coleslaw. All in all, everything was excellent bar fare. It was a good, abundant, and totally satisfying lunch. The bacon on the burgers was nice and crisp and actually filled with flavor. And, in the Great Wisconsin Bar Food Tradition, the burger tasted like beef. Strangely enough, that's becoming a rarity. For something so simple, it's becoming more and more difficult to find a good hamburger sandwich with appropriate, tasty toppings. Yum! Even upon our exit, we received a friendly well-wishing. I bet Bucky would give the Backwoods a "Two Paws Up" review. We'll be back. read more

1 hr 40 min wait for burger n fries. Waiter never checked in with us after taking our order. People who arrived an hour or more after us got their meals before or at same time as us. Yes it was a busy Friday, but this is beyond acceptable even for being busy. Food lacked taste. Only good thing was the calamari appetizer. To make matters worse when asked if we enjoyed our meal, the excuses started flying after we explained what happened. For our trouble they offered to take our drinks (we only had three) off our bill. We had a $36 bill. For our trouble the entire bill should have been tossed. Not like $36 would have made a difference with the night the bar had. read more

Great stop! Owners working the bar and restaurant to keep things hopping. Food was good, drinks cold. The only thing that would have made it better is A/C, as it was 90* out. Really good bar food, very friendly nice owners that work very diligently to service their customers. If you are from a larger city it is that perfect "Backwoods Bar" experience. The specials are usually what I recommend, the backwoods burger for burgers, and the fish fry or shrimp are very good. read more

The food is excellent and surprisingly pleasant. The view is spectacular and the service is five stars as well.

My mother lives right across the lake. We have docked at their pier too and had a fantastic time here. The food is delicious. Little hard to find driving but so worth it!!! Bring a $1 bill to sign and stick to the wall or ceiling. Must be thousands up there. read more
