Behind an unassuming exterior near the corner of Church and Swan streets, Lefko is quietly making the most delicious Greek food I've eaten outside of Greece. It's quite casual, and lacks any sort of pomp, but it's the place to go if you're after simple, authentic Greek food.
The Kalamaki (technically a souvlaki, but much better than what we're used to in Melbourne) are excellent - the pita is home-made and fluffy, meat is lean and perfectly cooked, and all the flavours work together really nicely without leaving you with deadly garlic breath. Pro tip: get the version that includes chips nestled inside; you won't regret it.
The Saganaki isn't the pan-friend sheep's milk cheese you might be used to; it's baked feta cooked with slices of red onion and yellow peppers. It's just the right amount of creamy and salty, and it melts in the mouth. You need to try it, simple as that.
The dips were really lovely, and another excuse to eat more of that delightful bread. The baked feta wrapped in pastry and drizzled with honey and black sesame was also delicious, although the sweetness of the honey might not be everyone's cup of Ouzo for a savoury dish.
Service is friendly and relaxed, and prices reasonable. Will be back, probably for lunch tomorrow. read more
