The parking is nice and there's plenty of it. But I ended up having to pay twice since each lot had a different zone code even though we were in the same park.

So we got out of the car, took some pictures, and left quickly before we could be ticketed. High prices sucked the fun out of Washington Park.

I wheeled the Prairie-Duneland Trail during my 25th Anniversary Tenderness Tour event that started…read morein the Lake County area of Indiana. This is a 10.3 mile asphalt trail that goes through both Lake and Porter counties. It is for the most part a wheelchair friendly trail and you can see walkers, runners, and bicyclists on the trail quite frequently as it tends to go through multiple populated areas. The trail is a few miles south of the Michigan Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes National Park. You can probably guess from the name that you will see lots of both prairies and dunes on the trail. You see lots of ponds and woods, though there's lots of a more urban trail vibe as you go through Chesterton and Hobart. I actually started my journey in Hobart. If you want to detour about a mile off trail in Chesterton, there's an old train depot where you can still watch trains pass by. It's pretty darn cool. The trail connects to other trails including the Dunes Kankakee Trail and the Iron Horse Heritage Trail (which I also wheeled). Parking for the western trailhead is available in Countryside Park. Parking for the eastern trailhead is available on Jackson Boulevard in Chesterton. I really enjoyed my time on this trail. It's a mostly level trail and offers a nice mixture of urban and rural trail experiences. I like seeing nature, but for safety I also do like the occasional human encounter. This trail offers both. If you're the type who likes to also visit towns, this is also a great trail for doing so. Both Hobart and Chesterton are nice cities to visit with both tourist options places to grab a meal.

The trail connects to several other trails (Iron Horse Heritage/Calumet) in the area and takes you through some terrific scenery. Some parts of the trail are shaded with beautiful tree lines and others are sunny and open through a field. The best part of this trail, WATER! Take this to the Calumet trail and end up at the Dunes. Fantastic day planned for you, I'll be here all week.

If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of life and relax than this is the place for you. They have fishing and paddle boats. They offer a volleyball court, basketball court and a nice playground for the kids. There is also full service grocery store not even ten minutes from here. The lady that owns the place is very sweet and kind. Her son is always happy to help and seems happy to work here.

While we enjoyed our visit, it felt quite different from many of the other national parks we've experienced. One thing that stood out was the number of residential neighborhoods within the park boundaries. Because of that, it didn't have the same expansive, remote feel that we typically associate with a National Park. In our opinion, it felt more like a very large and well-maintained state park than a traditional national park. That said, the shoreline along Lake Michigan is beautiful. Our kids had a wonderful time playing on the sandy beaches and splashing in the lake, and it was a great way to spend part of the day. The combination of beaches, dunes, and scenic views makes it a unique destination. Overall, while it may not have been our favorite National Park, it's still worth visiting--especially if you're in the area or traveling with children who will enjoy the beaches and easy access to Lake Michigan.

The marker reads, "In the aftermath of George Rogers Clark's conquest, skirmishers from Cahokia led by Capt. B. Hamelin and Lt. T. Brady, who had raided Fort St. Joseph, were defeated and captured near here by fur-trader Etienne Champion and Potawatomi allies of the British." The marker was erected by the Indiana Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century. There is space to park here and read the marker, visit the park or the memorial hall if it's open. Is Northwest Indiana a desert composed of rusting hulks of shuttered steel mills, abandoned homes,…read moreand refineries? Well, yeah, actually, a lot of it is, but there are some places, still a few, that remind you what this flat land was like before humans came in and changed most of it. You can ride the bike trail near Robinson Lake, fish, boat, play on the swing set, or, if you're really lucky like my friend and I, come by on a windswept autumn afternoon when no one else is around. You're not really in a wilderness at the Robinson Lake preserve. I-65 passes to the west, and there's no escape from the pervasive background hum of thousands of vehicles. You can tune it out a bit, though, and hear the breeze moving the leaves, watch a hawk circle overhead, and breathe in the fresh air sweetened by all the wildflowers and prairie plants growing nearby. Robinson Lake, and the bike trail, sneak up on you when you're driving down Liverpool Road, between 49th and 61st. You wonder why there is a parking lot. Finally, one day, you stop, get out of the car, and stretch your legs on the paved bike trail, or wander the grassy shore of this small lake. It must get crowded in summer, but in this shoulder season, it's heavenly. We walked only a little ways in both directions from the parking lot. We walked over the grass and admired the beautiful wild flowers. We breathed, deeply, and drew in the peace and serenity of the place. I wish I'd had a chair with me. Then I might've just sat for a while, watched the dark clouds blow overhead, and soak in the stillness of the place. I will be back.

Great calm eater on the day we were there. $25 per car. Tins of parking since we got there early. Amazing to see dunes and how big some are. Beach was nice. Fine sand. Paved walkway to the beach pavilion with stairs down to beach. Great skipping stones. Highly recommend. We only had a couple of hours and got to see a bunch but still plenty of stuff we had yet to do. Will be back.
