Art Fair today! Come by 11:00 to 6:00!
    Siobhan D.

We are staying up the road at the Beachwalk cottage rental community, and popped over today for the art fair at Washington Park. We didn't need to park, as we were on foot, so it was free to go to the fair. However, to access the rest of the park, the area with food trucks and live music, required a fee. So we skipped the food trucks, sadly. But we enjoyed the art fair it and bought a few things! The park was clean. The terrain is a bit uneven, so watch your step if you have balance issues. But we managed ok. It was fun!

I visited Washington Park on a weekday so it wasn't crowded at all. The zoo is nice for a smallish municipal park. Nice collection of animals displayed well. The downside is that the zoo is not very handicapped and/or elderly friendly. Most of the paths and stairways are uneven cobblestone with no handrails. I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility problems. They have a nice little gift shop where I bought some cute little mugs. The beach is wonderful. It stays shallow for a distance making it nice for toddlers. The walk out on the pier to the lighthouse has some good views although I don't know if the lighthouse is actually open to the public. They had a covered shelter at the beach with a lot of room if someone wanted to stay out of the sun and the beach itself is huge. I'm sure that you can find a place even on the busiest days. The restroom nearest the zoo was extremely nasty that day but the bathhouse at the beach was less so. If I lived closer I would go frequently!

    Enjoying the sunset. #NoFilters

We were recently visiting the area to explore Indiana Dunes National Park. One evening we came over to Washington Park to enjoy the sunset over Lake Michigan with the scenic lighthouse backdrop. The views did not disappoint! There is a boardwalk along the beach, so you don't have to get all sandy if you don't prefer. The boardwalk connects to the pier with the lighthouse. You can walk far out onto the pier to take in the waterfront views. At sunset, the sky was entirely alive with pinks, purples, oranges, and every hue in between. There were many photographers set up along the boardwalk, capturing pictures of the sunset with the Chicago city skyline across the lake. Parking lots were ample and free when we visited, but it appears they may charge for parking sometimes. If you are near hear when the sun is going down, don't miss natures most colorful show of the night! :-D

Lovely park along the lake. Hang out on the beach, enjoy the lighthouse view, stroll through the park, play in the splash pad, and enjoy the landscaping. There are pavilions to have picnics under. The lighthouse museum is within walking distance. Across the way is the Washington Park Zoo to stroll through. There are also several restaurants in the area to grab a bite at. Normally very windy since you are at the lake. Can be chilly unless you are there in the summer, so dress accordingly.

The only place to park on the beach. Day pass is $15. Lifeguard station. Outdoor showers to get the sand off your feet

When they're together everything is better.

First time on this side of Lake Michigan by Michigan City. Ample parking spaces, lifeguard available. Nice to take a walk by the lake and walk towards the lighthouse. Not the white sand we've grown accustomed to at Waverly Beach but this is still a good place to just relax. Very close to the outlet mall and Shoreline Brewery & Restaurant.

Disappointed you can go to multiple other beaches in the area but this one is closed due to COVID.

What had been a major tourist spot in the 1920's The area has lost a lot of the charm it once had.

It's enormous, the small dunes are beautiful, it has an incredible amount of parking, and looks out on the lighthouse.

It's super easy to get to the area where you climb the dune and get to the other side. A ramp was made after the well-known story of the boy who was swallowed into the dunes in 2013 (look for the news story in Google), so it's perfectly safe as long as you don't climb areas that are clearly marked as prohibited/peligro. The views are stunning! The beautiful blue water, a setting sun, a vast empty beach below, and gulls singing In the air create a very peaceful place to sit, relax, #latergram, and take it all in. There is even a spot where you and a loved one can take photos and get a good background view. Check out my pics and click if you found my review useful, funny, and cool.

We'd walk the trail to the point were you deviated up the side of the dune (Mt. Baldy) and ascended to the top where we would explore and play. I used to post pictures of the views from the top...most believing we were at a Caribbean island or some elegant destination. Nope..just northern Indiana! Then our visits were halted. An unfortunate accident happened to a young boy here about 8 years ago and the dunes were completely shot down to visitors. Fast forward to 2020..we finally made our way back. Mt. Baldy has been forever closed to foot traffic which is very sad, most likely linked to the incident that happened years ago. You can still walk the trail around Mt. Baldy which leads you to the beach, but access on the dune is prohibited. This was a great dune to climb and explore. Hopefully, it reopens again someday.

Beaches are beautiful and water is cold early in the season. The day I went there was a high wave advisory so they didn't let people in the water. You can see the City of Chicago skyline from anywhere on the beach when it is clear weather conditions. No pets on the beach and it does tend to get crowded when the weather is nice. But we didn't mind the $12 vehicle fee just for the view. South of the park on SR-49, you'll see a Visitors Center, and if we were staying longer, it's a nice stop for local park info, campground reservations, souvenirs, and refreshments. The drive into the state park to Porter Beach takes you through thick woods, and we saw a buck crossing the road, which was a real treat and a reminder that these parks are wild enough. At the end of SR-49, there's an ornate pavilion, and it was closed due to the upcoming holiday, even the cafe and store were closed. The restrooms outside on the boardwalk were open. And we brought our lunch in from Culver's down by I-80. There were only a couple other cars during the time we were there. We pulled up and braved the blowing sand to get a look at the thrashing waters of Lake Michigan. With gusts up to 40mph from an approaching storm, the eaves were spectacular! But it was difficult to stay upright in that wind, not to mention the light sand-blasting we were getting. And we were on the road heading for a holiday visit, so we didnt stay long, only an hour or so. It's a beautiful park, even in the winter. We want to sled down the 170ft dune-canyon known as Devil's Slide!

We also took a ranger led hike at Pinhook bog located in the park. The only way to hike in the bog area itself, is through a ranger led hike. This was definitely a very fun and very educational hike! We learned the history (and folklore) of the bog. There were carnivorous plants there- like the pitcher plant!! This hike is definitely worth taking. What makes this park different compared to the others in the East Coast is the fact it's mainly sand dunes. Some of the hiking trails were the sand dunes themselves which made for a good work out.
