    Balboa Island Ferry

The Ferry is the perfect way to get from Balboa Peninsula to Balboa Island. This cute old fashioned ferry takes a maximum of 3 cars and about 20 pedestrians. They have not raised their rates for as long as I can remember. It's still $1.75 per pedestrian - CASH ONLY. Cars are $3 plus $1.75 for extra people besides the driver. Kids only $.50. This is so relaxing to glide over to the island. Looking forward to those Balboa Bars! We walked around Tuesday night to admire all the holiday decorations. They are working on some electric solutions to meet the zero emissions regulation for 2025. I really hope they figure it out because the ferry is a treasure.

What a convenience!!! We missed PCH and drove into the peninsula. We needed to get over to Balboa Island and behold . . . we stumbled unto this ferry! Picturesque with blue skies and rolling waves. I didn't even feel when departed - it was that smooth!! Nominal fee. Carry cash.

BIF is the easiest way for us to get to the Peninsula. Sometimes you have to wait and other times you can drive right on. The easiest and cheapest way is to park on the island and walk on the Ferry. Taking the car on does cost more and they will also count how many people you have in the car. Riding a bike also costs more than walking on but is cheaper than the car. I have figured it costs about the same with gas and a bit more time if you drive around to the peninsula instead of the ferry. This also offers a more scenic drive than driving around the long way. I guess it depends where you are headed and traffic conditions. They do offer a frequent driver booklet if you ride it enough. You can save a few bucks by doing this. Overall, there are two ways to get to the other side. You can drive or take the Ferry. Overall, I am a fan of the Ferry.

Cute effective ferry!!! It allows 3 cars, bikes and pedestrians! I really enjoyed the ride over! It's very cheap. Pro tip.. cash only!

My first time in America taking a ferry with a car! It was such a fun experience and I didn't know about this place until I saw it on the news quite a while ago. But I thought this was a great day to try it out and also go to the beach. The boat can fit one car and it takes you literally across which is not that far away so it only takes a few minutes. They do charge you to do this but it was super low. Just a few dollars is all you need for a fun adventure. If you haven't done this I feel like you should. Sesame the doggie was so fascinated by it and it was also her first ferry ride too!

Such a cute little adventure ! Very affordable, cash only and all the workers were so kind.

Easiest and fastest way to get across! You can even take your car or bike with you if you'd like. I believe l it's $1.25 or $1.50 and I believe it's cash only, and the guys have plenty of change. It's a very short ride, maybe 3 minutes at most by Making it a fun and easy ride.

Blink and the ride is over. LOL This is a ferry where you can cross to the other side via your vehicle or on foot. We paid to drive our car onto the landing port and then drove over once we got off the ferry. It was a nice view and fun experience.

The Balboa Island Ferry is an iconic part of Newport Beach that has been in operation for over a century. It also helped me win a bet with my kids that our minivan could drive on the ocean! The ride is very short, only about 200 yards or so, but it's really the only ocean-going ferry that I'm aware of in Southern California, or maybe the whole state. While the ride is quick, it is definitely scenic. It can be pretty cool to see the boats on either side. Despite being somewhat unncessary as you can just drive around, this little shortcut remains super popular. It can get pretty crowded, especially during weekends and peak tourist seasons. So if you are in a car, be prepared to wait. They do have a time-tested, quite efficient method using three separate boats - one at each end, and one waiting in the middle. So it's not always that long. Also, it's cash only, but not that expensive. Plan on about five to 10 bucks for a group of adults. If you're looking for a quirky and fun way to cross Newport Harbor, or win a bet with your kids about cars driving across the ocean, this is definitely it. Worth the experience at least once. Five stars!

This is a very accessible ferry and a quick ride across to the other side. The staff is very friendly and they were very helpful with entering and exiting the ferry to help keep people from falling. This is a very useful service they have.

The view from my driver's side window. Very peaceful and relaxing.

OK, I'm from the state of Washington which has REAL ferries. Ones that hold 100+ cars. You can get out and walk around the boat. Of course, those trips usually take 30-40 minutes. So, I kind of laughed a little when I saw this this 3-car ferry that was more like a small barge. Still, I have to admit, it was fun for the 5-minute trip the $4.00 I paid. They were super organized and professional in the way they load you in, especially since you're with people on foot and with bikes. You drive on and then pay once the ferry gets under way. I have to admit, we actually started moving as soon as I stopped my car on the ferry. They ask you turn off the engine, but I thought my car was rolling and I keep hitting the breaks! It was a weird feeling moving on the ocean while sitting in your car. It took me minute for my brain to kick in that I'm on a boat and it's OK. Now, for the important part. Go to their website sign the petition to save this ferry. The state wants them to go all electric which will cost $5 million dollars!!! At $2 per person, that's 2.5 million people, and with the average ride probably taking in $40-50 bucks, you can do the math on this one. People will use more gas to drive around to the bridge, not to mention create more hectic and slow traffic. It's insane. But more importantly, if the bridge is closed, the ferry is the only way on/off the island unless you own a boat.

Very quick and fun way to get between Balboa Island and the peninsula. Efficient, scenic, historic, and easy in non-peak times. Thoroughly enjoyed this piece of history and totally recommend if you need to get between the two amazing locales.

Balboa Island ferry takes passengers, and cars, from Newport Beach to Balboa Island.

The Balboa Island ferry is the main mode of transportation between Newport beach and Balboa Island. The tickets are cheap and The Fairy as fast.. THE DEAL: have your phone ready to capture scenic views, both coming and going!

These ferry prices are crazy - they're almost on par with airfare! So yes, I recommend grabbing the Groupon that nearly halves it. Keep in mind this trip will not be cheap. It will cost you money to leave your car parked all day (there's a max rate, which you'll hit if you take the 8:45am ferry and arrive back at Newport Beach at 6pm). Prices vary based on season - you can look up the prices via "Newport Beach parking rates". We paid basically $45 just to park for that day in a random city lot near the docks. Be confident in your dates, because it seems a lot of complaints stem from people who needed to cancel or modify their reservation. Otherwise, it was a very seamless process to order the tickets and scan the QR code when boarding. Wi-fi password is only $1 when purchased with the ticket. There's additional charge for luggage, since some people stay overnight on the island. When you're boarding, they're a bit aggressive about selling the VIP experience, which was very sus. You should show up pretty early to line up for the ferry, as that'll get you first dibs on seating. We arrived over half an hour early and the line was already sizeable. They said it was possible seats would run out if they overbooked, and you'd have to stand. So, I get relatively mild motion sickness, but I can typically get over it pretty fast, or not get to the point where I feel a need to hurl. The Catalina Flyer made me uh, experience this. And I've been fine on various boats and ferries before, so I definitely was not expecting the constant push and pull of the torrent during the trip. It was hard to maintain composure even closing my eyes and blanking my thoughts. The first ~15 minutes of the ride was ok, but the next hour was praying for the time to pass without incident. When the trips ended, a lot of people looked ill, and the captain mentioned it was a bit more turbulent than usual. The trips took a little over 75 minutes each way, as you need to account for boarding. I can't imagine what it was like on the topside, as it was cold, windy, and fully booked on a random weekday morning. If you're prone to seasickness, you should aim to sit near the middle of the boat or on top. Most people wanted the window seats, and the leftovers got the sundeck. There's only two bathrooms by the way, and I don't recommend needing to go during the trip since you may rock back and forth while doing your business. The Catalina Flyer's employees even made a joke about the bathroom experience, especially because the ferry that leaves from Long Beach has way more. I absolutely recommend Dramamine before boarding, and that's exactly what I got for the trip back. There was a guy who offered "discounts" on various Catalina Island experiences between $50-100/pp (such as a semi-submarine, coastal cruise, conservancy, and city tour), announcing them when we sailed off - they were cheaper than our golf cart rentals, but they remove autonomy. If you're thinking about purchasing experiences, I'd research how much they typically cost online, so you can compare prices. I also wasn't personally interested because I like to rotate through Hawaii and Florida when I go on vacation, which I think offer better versions. Our Catalina Island day consisted of lunch, golf carting for two hours, grabbing souvenirs at Leo's Catalina Drug Store, watching a religious parade, alcohol and dessert, and tons of photos before we had to line up for the trip back to Newport Beach. I thought I was going to regret booking this trip because I'd get bored, but I'm glad I got to see what Avalon was all about. It seems like a mix of tropical culture, fishermen food and vibes, with junior Hawaii experiences and an Amalfi Coast aesthetic. And definitely touristy. If I had to take a ferry out again, I'd probably opt for the Long Beach ferry or come here from a cruise. But I probably won't go here again, because it's more expensive than Disneyland!

I know the coastal cities in California all have their own variation of this experience, but the Newport Beach one is the closest one to me and the one that I have taken family who visit for Christmas. When you book boat tours during this season, keep in mind to pick a tour after sunset. You'll see that the 5-8pm times are slightly more affordable because those tours will see the decorated houses along the water but the best time to see the boat parade would be taking a 8pm or 8:30pm tour. You have to check in with your tour company an hour prior, and the lines form quickly so you might even want to come earlier than that. Whatever time your tour is I recommend arriving 2 hours earlier because it takes a while to find parking. We arrived 90 minutes prior to our tour time and barely made it, and we even split up. My niece and nephew went to get our wristbands and got in line while my cousin and I circled around for over an hour for parking. The line began to move to board as soon as we got there. In retrospect I would have driven down there even sooner to have dinner in the area so we wouldn't have to stress so much about being late. The tour boat we were on had snacks and beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcohilic, for purchase. We got a window seat and was able to see all of the beautifully decorated boats of all sizes. Some of these people get super creative. Some pick a theme. Some just put on a lot of lights. It's hard to describe but it's such a wonderful feeling of feeling the joys of the holidays. I uploaded a few pictures, but I promise my pictures don't do the experience justice. Great for family and spectators of all ages. Just be patient and come early to ensure your optimal experience. Being early also ensures you get a good window seat on the boat. This is definitely one of the unique attractions when spending Christmas time in California.

We try to go every year and the best time I've had is getting one of the coveted restaurant reservations and being able to sit by the window of a restaurant and eat a great meal and watch the boat parade go by from the warmth and comfort of inside one of the many restaurants that line the harbor. Another option is just to bundle up (although this year it wasn't that cold on a few days) and find parking and then watch it from the shore. That is the free option and since the boat parade is really good at publishing their schedule you can time your visit to when the parade will pass by that location. I love seeing all the creatively (and some professionally!) decorated lit up boats! My kids really enjoy it too and we always take hot chocolate and make it a fun family holiday activity!

The trip was advertised as 2 to 2.5 hours, but it only lasted about 1.5 hours. Most of that time was spent heading back toward the harbor, and then we sat near the harbor entrance for around 20 minutes just watching sea lions. I honestly don't understand why anyone should pay $50 per person just to look at something you can easily see from the shore. It felt misleading and disappointing. The boat never seriously attempted to go offshore, where whales are actually located. What made this even more frustrating was that I specifically asked the staff before booking whether we were likely to see whales, and they assured me we would. Do not waste your money on this tour.
