The place itself is very clean and inviting, with nice decorations and very kind staff. I came in a big group, so we had a modified menu, but here's a run-down: + Shrimp Crackers (Kroepoek in Dutch): These were served on-the-house as openers with some chili sauce. Neither the crackers themselves nor the chili sauce were particularly interesting... just something to fill your stomach with. You can get shrimp crackers and any Asian store basically... I guess it's fun to set them on your tongue and listen to the fizzling, krupuking sound of the crisps? + Cucumber Pickle: The side dish was a sweet cucumber pickle. Slices of cucumber and shreds of carrot in a sweet vinegar brine. Served cold. Personally, it was too sweet for me. But the cucumber still had a nice crunch to it. I think this was on-the-house, not necessarily something you order; but I'm not too sure. + Mixed Vegetables in Coconut Sauce: This was really good! I think it was mainly cabbages and carrots, with fried onions and cilantro on top. The coconut sauce was sweet and did an excellent job of smoothing out the flavors in the vegetables. Yummy. Great to eat over rice. + Chicken Satay: This was one of the best satays I've had. Delectable strips of chicken smothered in a yummy peanut sauce, with fried onions on top! I love the crunchiness and the flavors of the onions as a contrast! The leftover sauce -- PERFECT to eat over rice. + Nasi Semur: Chunks of beef in a soy sauce-based sauce. Based on the description in the menu, this sounded rather pedestrian.... soy sauce isn't anything particularly interesting. But in fact, it was delicious! The beef had amazing texture, and the flavors definitely went throughout the meat. Mmmm. I'm salivating thinking about it again. Also, it's a lot of meat and it's all lean meat -- the best. I would definitely recommend this! Of course, with fried onion bits on top again. I'm guessing they just use store-bought fried onion pieces... but whatever, it's a great addition to the dishes. In terms of price, most main courses are around 15 euro. I would recommend sharing dishes with your company, and not just ordering your own plates. Then you can end up spending maybe even just 10 euro, and still be full. Rice came with the food, but water was extra (even though it was tap water...). One carafe was about 5 euro. Again, very nice atmosphere and the waitresses were exceptionally nice. I would definitely go back again! Free wifi, by the way.

Situated right alongside the canal (something apparently unique to Utrecht, these water-level…read morerestaurants and residences), you can smell this place from well down the street, and it lives up to its smell. The food is excellent across the board, and if they are offering the chefs plate, I would recommend it because you get some of everything. The biryani is especially good, not to mention the baklava with a mascarpone cheese layer which is fascinatingly creamy and good. Definitely recommended.

As shown in the photos, our favorites we would highly recommend are both the Chopan Salat and Mantoe for the appetizer, the Lunkho dish (if you like lamb this is one of the best lamb dishes I've ever had) for the entree, and the traditional Afghan milk pudding for dessert. Not pictured, but their house made lemonade is also fantastic and it made sparkling with mint (not too sweet). I initially found this restaurant on yelp and its high reviews and photos of the food caught my eye - I knew my father and I had to try it. We both cook and travel a lot (my father has been to 70 countries) and it was hands down one of the best meals my father and I have ever had anywhere. I did not take photos of the restaurant but the decor was absolutely beautiful as well as the traditional flute music they played at a perfect volume. The staff and the chef himself were all very kind and informative throughout the dining experience and went above and beyond to accommodate us. I will say come to this place with all your appetite because you will not be able to take your leftovers to go. The chef made an exception for us once and gave us one of their china plates with foil on top to allow us to take our leftovers to go since we did not know about the rule. Luckily we are staying close by and were able to return the plate because we wanted to return the above and beyond hospitality - the chef originally even told us to keep the plate! Food, service, and dining experience were all above and beyond. I am moving to Tilburg for a year for university and I will definitely be back multiple times.
