This is a great entrance to the beaches. There are other public access points, but this one…read moreoutshines them all, by far. Most access points are just a set of stairs up and over the dunes. Whereas this one, has a bit more to it. With it being a public access point, it has a lot more parking available. There is some street parking, but if you are lucky, you will get one of the spots in the lot. There is a lot to offer here, more than just access to the beach. Right near the parking you will see two beach volleyball courts. Which is quite a nice addition. And this is even before you get to the beach. This is also where the public restrooms, public showers, and a nice new addition for donated beach toys (read that as left behind). Then there is the boardwalk up over the dune and you pour out onto the beaches. You don't have to use the boardwalk as you can use the footpaths on either side of the building. But, what I can tell you, wear your shoes, that sun heating up the walkways can be a bit of hinderance if you wanted to make a quick trip to your car and back.

Crab, flounder, sea trout, black drum, and bait (pinfish) are common catches. The railing has a convenient ruler to check if your catch meets regulated length. A wall separates the pedestrian fishing side from the main road. Fishing licenses are required. If you need supplies, Fishing Unlimited is within walking distance.

There are hardly any services here (which I guess is why it's free to enter). What makes this place so cool is that you walk from the parking lot for just a couple minutes and you feel like you're on the set of a movie (think of the desert in Star Wars or Dune). You then climb to the top of one of the dunes and you can see the ocean on one side and the sound on the other.

It's the tallest living sand dune system on the East Coast, and the views from the top are amazing, especially at sunset. The visitor center has some neat exhibits about the history and ecology of the dunes, and the rangers are helpful with tips on where to go. People are out there flying kites or even taking hang gliding lessons, which makes it a lively place. Admission is free and it's a unique experience you don't want to miss.

There is so much to do in this park. Throughout the year, and especially in the summer, they have events. During the summer, it is almost daily events that you can partake in. They had music in the park one night, but with our place being so close, all we had to do was sit on the porch to listen. There is also a farmer's market, exercising in the park, I believe art in the park. If that is not your thing, there is definitely things here that could keep you busy. It should go without saying, there is a stage/bandshell area. There is a picnic area if you wanted to bring food and hang out. If you have kids, they definitely have you covered here. There is a decently sized playground (right near the public restrooms, convenient). This playground is quite extensive and inclusive. Slides, swings, seesaws, monkey bars...you name it, it is here. A lot of them are wheelchair accessible. Then there is the sandbox, complete with a turtle making it look like you are on the beach. The sidewalks here are interesting as well. Every so often you will see a seashell in the cement. Turtle tracks near the sandbox. Fossils on the climbing rocks for the jungle gym. They really put some thought into this place. Also available here for you to enjoy, horseshoe pit, cornhole, basketball court, pickle ball court, and bocce ball court. The thing about the bocce ball court, they have the state champs for Special Olympics here, complete with a plaque of sorts. One of the neatest thing here, you know those free little libraries? They got one that is a little free art library. Tiny little pieces of art that you can take with you. Bookmarks, small drawings, magnets, shells, all free for the taking. Supplied by the local community or those visiting.

On Thursdays there's a nice farmers and craft market. There's a nice produce stand with lots of local product. Many of the stalls are local artists and bakers. I love lots of the beach theme products, all very good quality.

In the morning the pier and adjacent beach were empty. The quiet and peaceful atmosphere was perfect for yoga. Thankfully the pier has several showers with ample space to rinse off sand.

Bottom Line: It might be decent for fishing but sightseers be aware of wide gaps between boards…read more Owned and operated by the Hilton Garden Inn the rickety Kitty Hawk Fishing Pier has some hazards but offers awesome views of the Atlantic. I highly recommend shoes, the sturdier the better, and keep a close eye on your footing. The pier sways a bit in the wind which one may find soothing or terrifying, depending on your perspective. The indoor reception shall is shockingly beautiful especially if decked out for a wedding. Sightseers are charged $1 to walk out. Fisherman pay more of course and its a two rod limit. The pier shares a parking lot with the Hilton Garden Inn.
