Unfortunately, I came when only the audio tour was available which is only available on your own phone, so I suppose you're supposed to know to bring your headphones. Luckily, the place was barren, so playing on speaker didn't bother anyone. The audio tour covers the history of the house and some details about the owners and the people that worked there. The audio tour appears to be new and it certainly judges the Carrolls by modern standards. Some of the themes are repetitive and likely intended to leave the listener with a negative impression of the owners. I did not have to pay for the tour because it was free during my visit but I would have judged it more harshly if I paid for admission. The gift shop followed some of the theme of the audio tour, which included pins of a political nature, which is surprising for a house museum on a college campus. It's a beautiful site with a complex history, but there's no one around to ask any questions about the house while roaming through each room. Outside, it's nice to stroll around the campus, and it's a good focal point to see on a nice day.

HoCoPoLitSo, the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, puts on an annual event that we like,…read morefocussed on Irish literature (Feb 2026). They caught our eye just now with a poetry day in April, and we realized we had been missing a whole calendar of events! We had been on campus at Howard Community College, and HoCoPoLitSo's "Poetry Police Force" gave us a poem and a list of that day's readings and workshops with regional writers. Alas, our day was booked, so we missed this event, but seeing how active they are year-round, and the list they have of other local poetry and literary events, reminded us to report on the previous Irish evening. HoCoPoLitSo's year of events culminated this past February in their 48th annual evening of Irish literature and culture at The HCC Horowitz Center. There was a cash bar, and we heard fun performances by an Irish-American band, Poor Man's Gambit, and by an American roots band, Unranked. There was a photography exhibit featuring Baltimore's Denny Lynch. The auditorium was packed with around 200 people for the evening's on-stage show. It was opened by the Irish ambassador, and included novelist Caoilinn Hughes, Georgetown associate professor and Director of Global Irish Studies Cóilín Parsons, and lively columnist Maureen Dowd whom we go out of our way to hear whenever we can. We loved last February's annual Irish cultural evening. What we discovered from our chance encounter in April is HoCoPoLitSo's active year-long calendar listing all sorts of local poetry and literary events!

This store came as a recommendation from my former piano teacher, Elizabeth B, when I started taking lessons from her. I had the most pleasant experience with Jarl, who I believe is the Executive Director. He showed me a variety of new pianos that were within my budget as I was on the "Rent to Own" plan. I ended up buying a beautiful Knabe upright, which still has it's beautiful color and shine after all these years. Jarl answered many of my questions after the purchase and arranged for a great delivery (I forget the name of the company but I should find out as I need them again to move my piano - LOL) that came within the time frame and it was quick and efficient. After two visits, I have come to the conclusion that this is not the music shop for me. I expect…read moreemployees of music stores to be familiar with all types of instruments, and that certainly isn't the case here. My first visit was for a new set of strings for my violin. I asked the person working at the counter to see their selection of violin strings and was given viola strings. While these two instruments are very similar, their strings are not interchangeable, and someone who works in a music shop should know the difference. My second and final visit was to get a shoulder rest for a 1/2 size violin. When asked to see the selection of shoulder rests, the staff had no clue what I was talking about. This is not acceptable of music store employees!! The staff should be very familiar with all products and should have basic knowledge of all instruments. I'm not a believer of the third time being the charm so I will not be returning to this store again. There are too many music shops in the area to have to settle for such incompetence.

This was a definite "meh" for us. Chickadee enrolled in the 9-month program (one ballet/tap combo…read moreclass per week and a recital in June) last year. The studio was located just off of the traffic circle in O-town a couple of years ago, but we didn't try it until it moved to the new location on 170. The building is nice enough. There are 4 or 5 studio rooms each with a glass door or glass panels so that you can watch your aspiring Pavolva or Astaire at work. There are a benches in the lobby area, but most 'rents just hang out in front of their children's studio. One guy even brought his camping chair--nice! On the plus side, there are oodles of class offerings here--hip hop, ballet, tap, jazz, music, art, and musical theater. If you have an older child, s/he may get more out if it than Chickadee did. Her teacher didn't seem enthusiastic at all and didn't do much individualized instruction despite the small class size. Tuition was $55/month, I think. This was not pro-rated for December (when classes were cancelled for winter break) or for the blizzards. The recital costume (admittedly cute) was $110. The recital was well-produced but TOO LONG for the little ones.
