This cute little Nordic style café / restaurant in Harrogate was a lovely lunchtime treat for my wife, dog and I as we spent a couple of hours visiting Harrogate. We ordered a coffee each (at the bar after getting a table in the corner so Luna didn't disturb any other diners) and lunch. I went for the meatball sandwich and my wife the gravalax smoked salmon on a potato cake with a duck egg and an exceptional dill sauce. We were both extremely impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. The meatballs in particular blew away what I was used to at IKEA with the ligonberry jam being the perfect accompaniment. Luna was treated to a water bowl and we were treated to filtered still AND sparkling water on tap for free. I've never been somewhere with free sparkling water never mind as much as you can drink. Epic. Would love to return when we next visit Harrogate. read more

Hurrah for Baltzersen - and hurrah for their stripped back Scandinavian charm! We were in Harrogate for the Tour de France and it was one of those days where we were seriously wondering if we were going to get a table anywhere or if it would be a quick sandwich on a bench somewhere. Adding a baby in a buggie further complicates the situation but luckily with us being "fair weather" cycling fans we decided to have a late lunch and managed to beat the crowds who'd all gone down and grabbed themselves a seat near the front! First off this is a super cool setting - clean, crisp, efficient but friendly - it's all service from the counter where you can get coffee and cakes, but you can go deeper into a menu offering sandwiches, snacks and platter boards. Our mixed board of meat and fish came with fresh bread and pickles and cost £8 - not bad to share between us. I was really impressed with them supporting the local 'bad seed brewery' and their Citra mashup beer was a lovely Saturday afternoon beer - definitely going in there as one to enjoy in the future again! We also grabbed cinnamon buns to go - £1.70 inside where you can sit in with it, £2 when bought outside to take way - I'm not sure how that works out... but there you go, who's me to argue with the economics of the cafe business... A great place that I'm going to check out next time in Harrogate! read more

After an afternoon of wandering around Harrogate my mum and I were ready for a sit down and a brew and happening upon Baltzersen's this seemed like the perfect place for a respite, tempted in by the array of delicious looking cakes and cinnamon buns. On this occasion we only ended up stopping by for a pot of tea and a cappuccino but the coffee was excellent and the service really friendly. As well as the cakes there are a variety of hot and cold Scandinavian inspired sandwiches which all sounded really interesting and delicious, although my veggie mum noticed that there were only 2 non-meat options available which seemed slightly unbalanced on the menu. I loved the modern Scandi look of white tiles and rustic wooden tables and chairs and can picture myself coming back and whiling away some time with a large coffee and a big slice of cake next time I'm in town. Also a slightly random (parental) aside but what a lovely touch placing a mobile above the baby changing table! It's all about the little touches! read more

I've lived in town just about as long as this restaurant has been around and it's been wonderful to see its evolution. The owner, Paul, and his committed team is always striving for the best food and experience for his customers. Baltzersen's seeks exceptional Yorkshire-sourced ingredients and uses Scandinavian inspiration to produce some of the most delicious breakfasts and lunches in town. The menu has been through several evolutions (and it changes seasonally as well) and I suspect it will continue to be tweaked. There isn't anything on the menu I've ever been disappointed with. However I will say that my favourite meal to enjoy at Baltzersen's is breakfast. The gravlaks are splendid, and anything with a duck egg or their amazing hollandaise sauce can't be missed! For those that like waffles, it doesn't really get better than Baltzersen's. My favourite for lunch is their roast beef sandwich. Simply excellent. You don't get the impression that anyone on staff is working here as just a stop-over until they find something better. They all really seem to care about their work, making and serving excellent food and drink. The restaurant is always clean and the staff always produce exceptional friendly service, even when they're quite busy, which is often. Though if you can make it in earlier on a weekday morning it can be quite relaxing and intimate; there's always a few people about, but it's a quiet breakfast, put to the tune of their excellent selection of music. Lastly, for all this, you've got great prices. One person can get in for breakfast or lunch, food and drink, for less than a tenner. For breakfast or lunch in downtown Harrogate, it doesn't get any better. No exaggeration. read more

When visiting Harrogate for the day, me and my friends were looking for a fix of caffeine. After initially asking in a shop where there was a chain coffee store, the assistant suggested Baltazars instead which was a great recommendation. Balthazers is a Nordic styled cafe that does a wide range of drinks and food as well as some gorgeous looking cakes. The cafe is very clean and bright. It feels modern but also welcoming. The prices seem decent to me but I'm used to London prices so it might be slightly expensive in comparison to other cafes nearby but definitely worth a visit. read more

First off - the coffee and the baking are superb. My wife is Finnish and commented that the cinnamon buns are as good as those from back home. Went with my Mum and Wife on Sunday 13th April. Found a table and went to order. Three coffees, two buns and a sandwich for me. The coffees and buns came out very quickly and were (as always) excellent. The sandwich didn't appear. After 23 minutes (I checked from checking in on 4square!) we asked a waitress about it, she snapped back "the kitchen's very busy" and walked away, not even to the kitchen to see about my food. A few minutes later we'd finished all of our drinks and given that'd we'd been waiting for half an hour for a sandwich we went to the counter where after a bit of fussing about they refunded the cost of the sandwich. I got the feeling that this being a Sunday they didn't have their "A-team" in. Most of the staff were wandering about with no sense of purpose/urgency. The first time we went everything was excellent but the lack of service on this occasion was a real let down. read more

Lucky to get a table in this bustling cafe, we looked on enviously as we passed the wonderful array of cakes and pastries that are baked fresh everyday. Having already drank lots of strong coffee that morning, we both opted for the Egyptian Mint Tea, with a clean crisp taste, very refreshing. The menu is an interesting mix of pastries, breakfasts, platters, cold and hot open sandwiches. I opted for the hot open sandwich with meatballs, fried onions, topped with Lingonberry jam and Jarlsberg cheese, very tasty, a good combination of flavours. My wife went for one of their iconic cinnamon buns, wonderfully flavoursome and huge in size. Balzersens has a great atmosphere and serves wonderful food, its just a shame we only discovered it on the last day of our holiday! read more

Really a lovely gem in Harrogate, testament to its popularity is the lunch time busy-ness. Great for breakfast, fast becoming a favourite here with delicious coffee from their very competent Barista's, along with the Pyttipanne, worth trying! If I could remember my loyalty card more often I'd probably do well! read more

There's only one real criticism i can make of this place, and that's the fact that there just isn't enough seating. Apart from that, i find it one of the most pleasurable eateries in Harrogate. The coffee is nice, and the scandinavian touches on the menu provide a welcome change to the usual fodder one finds in S'bucks and Caffe Nero, Costa etc. The cinnamon buns are amazing by the way!! Pay it a visit, soon! read more

Late on a Saturday afternoon wandering around Harrogate we saw this cafe coffee bar with its distinctive sign outside saying Yorkshire food Scandinavian influence and decided to try to go in. It was full, a good sign, and we had to wait some minutes. It was well worth it. The coffee was robust and well priced. The menu, includes the background history of the cafe's name and philosophy, is not too extensive but sufficient as is the portion size. Our choice of open sandwiches came with some very tasty accompaniments served on a platter. The cheese combo and smoked mackerel were yummy yummy. We finished our lunch with a very cinnamony bun and an aptly looking fried egg bun with coconut, custard and just a hint of cardamon. All the cakes are baked fresh daily. Service from the chef was very friendly and the other staff acceptably polite. The decor is modern Scandinavian dark wood and there is a more comfortable coffee nook.
