Doesn't look like much when you walk past but once you explore the auras within the lovely dimmed jazzy little restaurant. You're immersed in the culture... The locals very nice the food don't get me started.. I came in with one of my good buddies and look we ordered what we wanted every order was wrong!! BUT! What we got was arguably better... which we were surprised about! Only bad thing was that my bud is vego and the thing that came that wasn't we sadly didn't get to try but I assume it was also delicious, there's jugs of free water by the door when you walk in. I wanted to ask if the water was filtered but got too nervous, I think it was though, crisp. The outside dining is beautiful, but keep a close eye on any cigarettes you're trying to hang on to, as the pesky outside locals sometimes are quicker then you'd think. It's half self service (order at counter and if you want condiments etc grab it yourself) but it's such a chill vibe and woudn't want it any other way. Great pizzas, salads and breakfasts. Cheap prices too, especially during happy hours. Been here a couple times and both times had a really cool experience. You can hang out, grab some cards, play, order food, chat to friends. Great find in St Kilda close to where we were staying. Had breakfast here a couple of days and enjoyed. With seating in and outside and an open fire inside added a great touch. It is reasonably small and both days we were lucky enough to get a seat but it was busy. The coffee here was amazing!! The breakfast was good too and a reasonable range and a good price. We had zucchini fritters which were yum! The staff were very friendly and happy. There were plenty of staff too so service was quick and smooth. read more

This had to be one of the best small joints with Happy Hour that I was able to visit on my trip. Pizza and beer were $7 and $3.50 respectively, which was a steal for how tasty everything was. I had the Paper Bag Carbonara and Morrocan Spiced Lamb Pizza which were killer delicious. My only regret was that I didn't have enough room I to try the Saganaki pizza. Mondays and Tuesdays offer the longest periods for Happy Hour which is an insane value. If I had lived in the area this might be one of the kick it spots. read more

The Banff is one of my favourite places to go any day of the week for a good catch up with friends. Weather it be a Sunday breakfast of freshly baked banana bread and a glass of one of the best soy latte's around, or for after work drinks to enjoy the happy hour specials with a $2 beer and a tasty pizza. The Banff is lovely and warm inside there is an open fire place to keep you toasty during the colder months and outdoor seating so you can get your dose of vitamin D during Summer. Happy hour at the Banff cannot be beaten, they offer $2 pots, $8 jugs and $3 glasses of wine everyday between 3pm and 6pm, you will often find the cosy little cafe full to the brim with joyous customers drinking and chatting during the late afternoon. The pizza's at Banff are terrific but my favourite meal is the homemade pasta dishes, my favourite is the Spaghetti with roasted garlic prawns, peas & mint, they serve the pasta wrapped up in paper almost like fish and chips giving it a really authentic and homemade feel. The prices at Banff are great with most of their dishes under about $10 it really is a fantastic food and drink option in St Kidla. read more

I came here for breakfast and it was great. But tonight I came for dinner. When I went up to order two waitresses were talking behind the counter. The first looked up and started to pay attention the 2nd looked at us and ignore us while continuing to talk for another minute or so. My partner and I stood very uncomfortably and waiting for them to stop. Then the very cheap food came out. And you do get what you pay for. It wasn't great. Once the rude waitress came back to collect the food she asked how it was. When we told her it wasn't great she simply replied 'great' and walked away. I'm left feeling unsatisfied and very annoyed. This will stop me from ever coming back and I will now be writing a formal complaint to the restaurant read more

You know when you wander around and get a bit lost and then get hungry and thirsty on a nice sunny day? I did that on one of those beautiful sunny days that never end, and found myself on Fitzroy Street next to Albert Park. There's not much over there that I've ever been to. Closer to the beach a few options, and once you get to St Kilda Road it becomes car-tropolis. Smack between the two there's a little place that I like to call heaven, but others insist have a name: Banff. Simply the best happy hour I've been to, and possibly the only one I've seen in this area. From 3-6pm you may fight for a table out front (it gets almost all-day sunshine) but it is SO worth it. $2 pots, $8 jugs and $3 wines. And if you order before 5:30 you can get a personal pizza for only $5.5!!! My favorite is the long bench style table nearest the building. You can meet fun new people (some of my friendships originated there) and love the arvo sun! read more

It is seemingly always busy, and is kind of a game to watch the frenetic pace of comings and goings pan out over the course of one's stay. There's always the delicious breakfasts, and don't forget to order a large coffee, because those mugs are massive =) I like the baked dishes. They're always indulgent. Pizzas during the week are generally around the $5.50 mark, and you can get it takeaway as well. The toppings are delicious and varied. The crust is nice and thin. The pasta is cooked in a little bag, although sometimes a little dry. it's very very casual, and the staff are generally in a good mood. Can be confusing. Sooo I have no idea why we were all the way down in St. Kilda, but I think there was some kind of street fair or festival. Anyway, on a map it looks far away, but it's actually really easy to grab a tram from Flinders St. Station, and it's always fun to check out a new part of town. Once you get down here, it's great. Cute little restaurant on the St Kilda Road side of Fitzroy Street. Bike rack right out front and it's a bit hard to see a sign. Look for the striped awning. They have great pizzas and pizza deals. It can get very packed on the weekends. I had the bruschetta brekkie. Very nicely done with three, big portabello mushrooms with half a sliced avocado, full grilled tomato all stacked on two slices of sour dough bread with rocket on the side. Yum! read more

I love the decor of this restaurant. With plenty of dark wood, a fireplace, and a stack of log cut wood by the fire, it definitely feels like a rustic, homey place, perfect for enjoying a bottle of red! The menu is Italian with hearty pastas and homemade pizzas with plenty of fresh ingredients. Interestingly, the pizzas are only offered in one size, what I would call an individual portion. My guest and I shared two different pizzas and it was perfect.We had the Saganaki and rosemary potatoes pizza, and the bacon and egg with roasted tomatoes pizza. Both were delicious! We also just happened to hit their happy hour - $2 pots, $8 jugs and $3 glasses of house wine. The dinner menu was cheap anyway, but you can never go wrong with a happy hour too! The Banff has become our go-to spot for a quick (and cheap!) takeaway pizza. Pizzas are normally $9-11 a piece and there are some interesting options. My first pie here was squid, chilli, lemon, and rocket. It was excellent--the squid was tender and the ingredients covered the ground between the tangy lemon, the spicy chili, the sweet and briny squid, the bitter rocket, and savory mozzarella. The crust doesn't have the chewiness of a good neapolitan style pizza, but is a decent delivery system for the rest of the ingredients. My second pizza was the Korean barbecue, with (somewhat scant) delicious beef, sweet carmelized onions, mozzarella, and kewpie mayonnaise. It sounds a big strange, but was actually quite interesting and balanced. I haven't visited for happy hour yet, but it seems to be an excellent value with cheaper jugs than the pints at most places. Beer selection is limited to one tap beer and one cider, so if you're looking for a wide-ranging selection this probably isn't the place. There are some standard-issue bottles (Peroni, Asahi, etc) as well. In short, this goes beyond cheap backpacker food--it's a solid neighborhood place that provides good value for your money. read more

On sunny St Kilda days, The Banff is a perfect place to stop and have a wine and a pizza on the footpath, while taking in the neighbourhood. Much like its Canadian namesake, you are surrounded by wood. Many tables scattered inside will seat groups large (up to around 12) or small. Then there's that outside option, with curb-side seating available. Located on Fitzroy St, many might first be though to stay clear - Fitzroy St is starting to get rundown, with a few stores closing. The Banff and a number of its neighbours have stayed though, and thrived. And, they're worth it! Happy hour runs from 3-6pm, in one of the longest hours you've ever had... and accompanied by a pizza, you will be set. They also do breakfast, and make a great stop on the weekends or even just to grab a latte on the way to work. Stop in, say hi. The staff are warm and friendly. Highly recommended! read more

Breakfast on a beautiful summer day in Melbourne deserves to be al fresco...! The Banff turned out to be the Friday morning choice. (FYI: We were excited to introduce our friends to another popular morning spot around the corner; however, sadly, they turned out to be closed for the holidays. This was our alternate choice, as it had 4-stars from fellow reviewers.) We took one of their park-bench tables to accommodate our group. (To be honest, I don't know what the inside looks like, as we simply grabbed an outside table.) The start was a bit shaky, as no one came out to wait on us. Our friend (being that he was closest to the front door) went in to see if we could get some service. The friendly wait-gal came out and brought us waters, menus, and took our drink orders. I was in the mood for a bagel and lox, but I'm told very few restaurants serve bagels; and, the ones that do, don't come anywhere near the kinds of bagels we're used to back in the States. (If someone can let me know otherwise, I'd truly appreciate it.) Fortunately, the menu included an item that came close to satisfying my New York mood: Toasted multigrain, spinach, smoked ocean trout, poached egg, and lemon caper creme fraiche ($15), with a side of chorizo ($4). My dish arrived looking attractive and hearty. That said, I had asked for hard-poached eggs; but, for some strange reason, when I broke the eggs with my fork, only one of the two eggs were hard-poached -- the other was liquid. Curiously, my partner (who ordered his Smashed Avocado with a "normal" poached egg) had somehow gotten my hard-poached egg on his plate! Fortunately, my liquid egg hadn't quite spilled out much, so we were able to switch. Taste-wise, it was really good. Hard-poached eggs were done the way I like 'em. The rustic toast was, indeed, quite rustic -- to the point where it cut your gums biting into it! The smoked ocean trout (a salmon-like fish) wasn't quite as thinly-sliced as I like it, but it had a nice, clean taste. The chorizo was overcooked, but tasted decent; not quite as spicy as I prefer. The highpoint was the lemon caper creme fraiche. My goodness, it was wonderful! Like sour cream mixed with capers and infused with lemon. It was a beautiful complement to the ocean trout. It's too bad the entire meal hadn't coalesced like that creme fraiche. In sum, A-OK is a wholly reasonable summation of my breakfast. Oh, how I "Miss-ed" my fave breakfast spot on "Jackson" Street.... ;) (As an aside: My partner wasn't particularly happy with his Smashed Avocado. He, too, said the bread was rock hard. The side of grilled bacon, unfortunately, was dripping with grease that flowed off the cutting board that it was served on. Our buddy said his Big Breakfast Board was wholly decent. At no other restaurant in Melbourne have I ever felt more satiated and relaxed than at Banff. In fact, this is truly the one place that I keep coming back to time and time again. Sitting beside the crackling fire place with an unmarked bottle of red, you really do feel as if you've transported to a log cabin high in the Canadian rockies. The atmosphere is endearingly cosy and the food is good italian home-style fare, with an impressive list of pizzas and pastas. At $5.50 during the day the pizzas are super cheap and while there is the occasional complaint that they are a little on the small side, they are still pretty filling. There are also a number of options for gluten free diners, which is a really considerate touch.The desert calzones are heavenly, a super indulgent mix of pastry, mascarpone and chocolate. This is a no fuss restaurant. You collect your own cutlery, the wine is simply classified by grape and you order at the bar. A refreshing addition to the somewhat trashy Fitzroy Street (you'll find Banff right next to the Danish Blue Adult Centre...) this place is an absolute favourite. read more

I have only been to The Banff once but I was instantly drawn in by it's name- my boyfriend and I spent four idyllic months living in it's namesake Canadian village. Sure enough, the decor pays homage to Banff, with posters and maps bringing back some happy memories for me. And then there's the food. I had a gourmet pizza, which set me back, oh, about $5. GREAT value for money. The menu is extensive too and the coffee- EXCELLENT. Open air dining in good weather. A little cramped if they can't open the doors. I love a place that has innovative salads as a change from the standard lettuce, tomato and onion. So combine one of the salads with a pizza with scarce toppings and you have yourself a great meal. This place is named after a mountaintop town in my Home and Native Land so I had to try it. I like. It's popular with the backpacker set because of the affordable prices ($9 for a pizza!) but unlike a lot of the places they tend to frequent, it's actually, well, good. While the food isn't going to blow your mind or anything, it's decent, solid food. Service is no frills (pick up your own cutlery and water) but whatever - I'm getting used to that now. Quite a small venue without any wait service. You have to get your own cutlery and order at the bar. This would be ok if the food was extraordinary. The Banff is what you would expect of an expensive trendy Melbourne restaurant at first glance but if you look a little deeper you will in fact find that you have stumbled across and incredibly cheap, good quality, trendy Melbourne restaurant. The pizza here is really good and cheaper than you thought was possible. The pasta is placed in the pizza oven and served in paper which is quite unique and a pleasant surprise when it reaches the table. Although they do bring the food to your table you do have to go inside to order, this might be their way of getting you closer to the fridge so you see the beer and get tempted to buy one. read more
