My grandma was the most pleased when a branch close to home finally opened so we frequent Via Mare a lot. Most ideal for family lunches or dinner, the food here is large enough for sharing. Even the atmosphere fosters this kind of dining experience - interiors are kept light and airy for a pleasant dining experience. The food's theme is dishes with some hints of Western here and there, but is predominantly, Filipino food. For starters, they have homegrown salads and veggies, with one of these being the Ensaladang Pako. The dish uses crispy and fresh fern leaves topped with tomatoes, salted egg, shrimps and a tasty vinaigrette that ties in all the elements of the dish. As any Filipino meal is incomplete without rice, Via Mare offers three kinds - Calcag Rice, Tuyo Fried Rice, and Fiesta Rice (adobo based). My favorite would have to be the Calcag Rice - it has crunchy sun-dried shrimps, bagoong and scrambled egg, and the blend of salty really plays well in the rice without having to be extremely salty. One of the things I love about Via Mare's menu is its selection of oyster dishes. I really love their Oysters Rockefeller which is served on a bed of salt and the fresh oyster topped with spinach, cheese and bacon. The oyster itself is very juicy and fresh and they are quite large. Honestly, I find it hard to share - but as they say, sharing is caring. As for the main dishes, I really love their Krispy Pata - a deep fried pork dish that's really tasty and goes well with the Calcag Rice. The serving is pretty large and good for sharing. One order is enough for four people. I like that it comes with its own sauce as crispy pata can be pretty dry on its own. Another dish I would recommend is their kare-kare. For dessert, I love their refreshing take on Halo-Halo in the form of Halo-Halo Shooters. The shooters come in three little glasses and is more like a deconstructed halo halo but each is topped with the shaved ice and fresh milk.

It is a casual restaurant but instead of making it seem like a Dencio's or Gerry's Grill they made it a but more sophisticated and added a touch of home. Via Mare specializes in fine Filipino cuisine. You can find homemade staples such as Kare Kare but i would say the number one thing you should try is their Crispy Pata. Man, that is a thing of beauty!! Crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. Their ensaladas are good, too. There has also been buzz about their oysters so try that if you like oysters. They also have a really good kakanin selection. My favorites include Puto Bumbong and Bibingka. This branch in UP is a nice family restaurant as it has a quiet ambiance that makes you appreciate the food even more.

The place is still the same and still love to go here for breakfast especially or lunch and dinner. The servers are great and place is always clean. My favorite now is Lugaw and fresh mango shake. Their Rockefeller Oysters are still good and the oysters are a little bigger this time; and still comes with two pieces in each shell. I can tell they clean the oysters off the shell as it's not grainy. Totally, recommend still for their food options, service and meal options. [8/100] ------------------Review 1 year ago-------------- Via Mare Oyster Bar is another chain of Filipino's food. This is the second restaurant chain that I have gone too in Manila. This one serves oysters in menu but I don't think oysters is a normal part of the Filipino culture? A medium priced restaurant for their menu. This restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered a few dishes to try. Mom ordered 'Pinais na Alimasag' which was two blue crab de shelled and cooked with coconut milk. It came with bagoong rice and two pieces of egg roll that did not have a lot of flavor. The crab dish was very salty but went with the egg roll. I had their Lugaw Toppings. Basically, it's guto soup (rice porridge) with all the fixings. You only need to add calamansi since the soup was salty enough. We also ordered two different kinds of oysters. We ordered 'Parmesan' and 'Napolitains'. The 'Parmesan' really did not have flavor but that you would add the sea salt to it. I liked the 'Napolitains' as it has cheese, tomato sauce and herbs. The oysters are very small but each shell comes with two small oysters. These are more like New Orleans dishes than Filipino food? I love their fresh mango drinks! Tastes just like ripe Filipino mango blended only! Me fave!! The food came out fast except for the oysters. The service was good but when asking for the bill, it always seems to take them forever to give us the bill like other Filipino restaurants here in the PI? I wonder why that is? Rating is more of a three and a half stars instead of four. Everything is good but will be back for breakfast!! I think I like that more than dinner. [66/100]

Now, she continued the tradition with me and my sister. Once in a while, we would go there after hearing mass or after shopping (since it's also inside Trinoma's Landmark which is so convenient, right?). It's a nice place where families can go to enjoy the Merienda staples that Via Mare offers. We would order tons of food such as the Bibingka, Arroz Caldo, Pansit Luglog, and Adobong Pusit. Their Tortang Alimasag (yes, it's merienda for me) is a favorite of mine. With its big serving of crabmeat omelette, rice and a side of veggie egg rolls, it's sure to fill up your stomach not only with delicious food but also with satisfaction. For dessert, I like to order their Guinomis. This classic Filipino cooler is made with sago, gulaman, pinipig, and gata (basically, it's like halo-halo without all the beans). It isn't too sweet which suits me just fine. So if it's mid-afternoon and you're looking for a nice place to eat merienda, go to Cafe Via Mare!

The location is extremely open to the rest of the ground floor of this section of Promenade, so it's not as intimate as you'd think for a Café but the ambiance was nice and casual. Service was speedy and our waters were always topped off. We were one of 4 parties in the restaurant at the time, but one party was huge so I appreciated the service. We ended up getting the beef kaldereta and the inihaw na liempo. Both came with a side of rice, and the liempo came with a nice little side of atchara and some bahay kubo type vegetables. The dishes were fine, I loved how the liempo was cut thin and very crispy. The vinegar they paired it with was perfect as well. I appreciated the olives in the kaldereta, as my mom doesn't normally incorporate those so it was a nice surprise. The only thing that really irked me was the pricing. For these two arguably simple dishes it came out to over 800 pesos! The food wasn't anything to rave about, but it wasn't bad either. It just wasn't justified for the price in both taste and quantity. You could get a larger portion for the same size and quality from a chain like Max's or Savory. I heard their desserts were good though. I'll probably come in for dessert to try it out, but I'll pass on the mains next time.
