Bar Andaluz is a fantastic spot with an amazing atmosphere, excellent cocktails, and outstanding service. The bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the experience even better. I asked about their favorite drink, and they recommended a margarita, which was excellent, but my personal favorite was the Piña Colada. It was perfectly balanced, refreshing, and one of the best I've had. If you're looking for great drinks and top-notch bartenders, Bar Andaluz is definitely worth a visit. There's nothing quite as exciting as visiting the bar where the margarita was invented! This historic spot feels it with the dark wall paneling and original flooring and bar. It's very cozy and relaxing and it's neat to see Margaret, the inspiration behind the sink, still sitting at the bar via her photograph. The folks behind the bar were very accommodating to our large party from our cruise excursion. We got to sample the original margarita and it's definitely different than what we get in the states. I enjoyed it more than the stateside version honestly, it has more flavor and isn't as sweet. Definitely recommend checking this spot out! read more

This is a cool low-key bar hidden inside the cultural center. The cultural center used to be a hotel decades ago and the bar is supposedly where the margarita was invented (named after the wife of the hotel owner or something like that). There's a great courtyard where you can just relax with your beverage of choice. You order your drink at the register and pay for it there. The you get a printed receipt which you give to a bartender who make ls your drink. A very efficient operation which I am sure makes getting drinks out go quickly when they're slammed. It was pretty dead the day I was here (Tuesday before. Thanksgiving), but I bet it gets pretty busy in the summer. read more

Had a Cadillac Margarita at the supposed birthplace of the margarita, much to my pleasure on a 65 degree day. The building itself is a cultural heritage site filled with gorgeous woodwork, original tile, amazing paintings, and traditional architecture. For about 11 bucks, you can sip a tasty lime treat while sitting in a naturally cool courtyard surrounded by colonial history. Fun spot to go to when exploring Ensanada! We were stopped here on a cruise and decided to explore a different direction than the normal marina/downtown area. Glad we did! Neat to see the old building. There are pics of what it looked like when it was a casino. The margaritas were good. Not my absolute favorite, but I would still recommend checking out the place. Walked down the street from the cruise dock to Bar Andaluz. Ordered from the gorgeous bar with the original tile work and background mural. Our group ordered margaritas & micheladas. Sat in the beautiful interior patio. It feels like you're sitting in an old Spanish mission. Make sure to check out the wall-length painting of the missions covering California and Baja. This place is an Instagram photo shoot dream location. Signage from the street to the bar is nonexistent so look for the opening in the exterior gate and stairs that lead you to a lovely arched door. While in Ensenada on a cruise, my husband and I decided to stop at this bar before heading back to our ship. We had been here once before, and I ordered a mango margarita which came in a huge, beautiful glass. This time, I ordered a small mango margarita because we had just finished lunch and I was stuffed. The plastic glass was rimmed with tajin, and the mango margarita was just as delicious as I remembered. The property was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Apparently Ensenada is the originator of margaritas. Who knew?! And there are two bars competing for the title in town! This bar is one of the competitors. Bar is located in a historic building that use to be a casino: apparently Al Capone use to visit this casino. Also there is an escape tunnel leading between this location and town! You can go on a tour and learn more. Ok so how is the margarita. For 100 pesos you can try one for yourself. They have traditional margaritas and ones with flavor. I opted for a traditional margarita. A bit on the sweeter side but not overly sweet. A tour guide said they are sweeter here than the other bar due to no tequila or less tequila? Not sure! In summary the margaritas are good but not great! They do go down easily! There are a couple of tables inside. Most tables are outside with some of them having umbrellas. Without an umbrella, the courtyard can get mighty hot! Note the bar can get busy. Looks like the tour guide finishes tours at the bar. Free mini sample at the end! In between tours, the bar was not too busy on a weekday in the afternoon! read more

Bar Andaluz is not only one of the argued birthplaces of the Margarita, it's an awesome cantina. You can't go wrong with Joaquin or Hugo behind the bar and the Caballero out front in the armor is an awesome gent. There's a lot of history here, so I recommend bringing Google Lens or a translator and enrich yourself in the wonderful history of Baja. Out front a block away is the walk of Baja 1000 with most of the winners from 1960-2020. read more

Very cool ambience and history with this place. We were told that this is where the margarita was first invented. The price was decent at 6 US dollars for a glass of margarita. However, that was it in terms of the highlights. Beware this is sort of a tourist trap. The drinks itself were not tasty. The bathrooms were disgusting. Yes the ambience decor was fascinating given its history but if you are looking for tasty margaritas I would not recommend this place. Instead I would head over to Centro Ensenada, Santo Tomas area. Who doesn't want to come to the birthplace of the margarita? I was reading online that this fact is disputed as there are a myriad of origins. With that said, the margaritas that I had here at this bar were phenomenal. First, I had started with the classic margarita which was excellent. Then, I tried their blended mango margarita as it was actually made with real mangos! I was in love with the blended mango margarita. It is definitely a place to check out if you are in Ensenada. It took us a while to find this place because it's in the back of the government building but it's such a gem. We each got mango blended margaritas which were delicious and large. This place is very awesome! It's located about a 5 minute walk from the cruise terminals and about 5 minutes from the main downtown area. What's great about this place is how quiet it is compared to other locations around town. Definitely come here to enjoy the home of the margarita! On our recent trip to Ensenada we were at this bar everyday! We tried a few bars all over Ensenada and this one was our favorite for a few reasons. First, the bar is somewhat hidden next to a large white church. Since it's hidden you do not see a lot of tourists, mostly locals but there is still plenty of seating indoor and outdoor. Secondly, the drinks are really what won us over. They have classic, mango, strawberry, peach, and tamarind margaritas. On one of the days we were there they had 2-1 margaritas, 2-1!! Theses margaritas are not small servings either. We enjoyed the margaritas but the reason we were really coming back were the Pina Coladas. The pina coladas at this bar were the best pina coladas we ever had, EVER! Just as I'm writing this review my mouth is watering for double shot pina colada. (I might make one after this review lol) All of the drinks that we had were blended which really makes a difference. Bar Andaluz, you really made our trip memorable. Thank you! This place is a must visit for anyone in Ensenada for the first time. Seating is plentiful outside. A hidden magical bar in the back of a traditional Mexican building. You would never find this hole in the wall without speaking to a local. When we entered, no one spoke English so we knew it was authentic. We could barely communicate what we wanted, but we knew we wanted a margarita. This is the place where it all began. Super fun place. Definitely bring your friends! We took a Carnival Cruise and decided to take an excursion to La Bufadora (the Blow-Hole) and the museum tour. It was an inexpensive tour, but it was worth its weight in gold as our tour guide, Abner was fabulous. Anyhow, he took us to Centro Social Cívico y Cultural Riviera de Ensenada, a museum which used to be a hotel. The tour ended up at Bar Andaluz. We learned that the Margarita was created in this very bar after the hotel owner had found her husband cheating on her and fled to the bar to get smashed. The bartended named the drink after her. It's a beautiful bar and they drinks are fantastic. Just outside the bar are several local vendors selling goods at a reasonable price. We had a great time. read more
