The caldinho de feijão, essentially a cup of black bean "soup", was served with chicharrones and was so flavorful, I could have had a whole bowl of it. The highlight for me was definitely the empada de palmito, like a mini pot pie of palm hearts, it was so creamy, smooth and the pastry melts in your mouth. Of course can't pass on a caipirinha de maracujá (passion fruit), this one was probably the freshest of the whole trip! I loved the experience of a very local bar (no tourists around) in beautiful Leblon. The food is very good, it is always crowded so you must be patient to be seated. What I love about Bar Bracarense is the chopps and the carne asada sandwiches. After a long beach day, nothing satisfies quite as much as this local boteco's suds and sustenance. There's nothing fancy about it, and if you're going on a weekend late afternoon, you're likely to find a solid wait for a table. If you're with friends though, the common custom is to stand along the sidewalk, savor a cold beer and wait your turn for a table. Wiser (and more impatient) eaters can hover around the indoor bar area (which is certainly no frills) and snag a stool. You'll get served quickly this way. If you like passion fruit caipirinhas, be aware that they blend theirs so you won't find the delicious seeds fully intact (how I like mine). This is my favorite boteco in Rio. read more

What can I say...this stop is a must when in Rio. The scene can get a little crazy in the evening, but if you show up early for lunch you have it made. The servers are very attentive, you only need to look their direction to have their attention. Plan on sharing lots of small plates, that is the best way to experience this stop. This was my first stop in Rio but not my last. Throughout my one month stay I frequented Bar Bracarense a solid 13728 times. The gloriousness that is their carne assada sandwich (they needed an extra 's' to emphasis they beauty of that sandwich) can not be understated. I also had a few friends come visit me during my stay here and they all agreed, this place is phenomenal. You get a really good local vibe. During their last night in Rio we stopped by and there were a few groups of friends chanting and singing. I've even gone with vegetarian who enjoyed their meal. As others have said, this is a great local bar. Cold choppe, attentive service, delicious sandwiches. We had the carne assada and the filet mignon completo. Both were really good. The filet, although sliced thin, was cooked to med. rare perfection. Even the thin sliced fries were very fresh and tasty. Before coming to Rio, I asked a Brazilian friend what to do in Ipanema and Leblon. He said check out the beach and this one bar. And we were not disappointed! For 12 reals I got the carne asada, beef sandwich, which came with roasted peppers and the beef. It was delicious! This was my first food stop in Rio and we were pleasantly surprised. So I ordered the Barcatudo! The sandwich was so tender and tasty! We also ordered the empada de camarao it was lack luster and was small for the price. The Maracuja Caipirinhas were amazing though.
