Not only is Tim a great barber, he is pleasant, and the shop is great. Small, with one barber chair and mirrors, he has what he needs, and can deliver a great cut. I enjoyed that he threw out suggestions, listened to exactly what I wanted, and delivered an amazing haircut. Not sure, but when I got home from a late night there one weekend, I felt inspired me to go at my own hair with some electric pet clippers and a pair of dull scissors. Flash forward a few days... I ducked in on a Tuesday morning, looking for a savior. Tim was there, though only incidentally - he said he only takes appointments on Tuesdays. He sat me down anyways. He and the female stylist sharing the space had a very good laugh over my ill-conceived self-cut, but all in good spirits. He fixed it, taking a lot of input from me. Cut is totally casual and a little hip. He took his time to make it really nice, and then forgave me when I found myself a few dollars short of his very reasonable price. I have been going to Tim for over a year now and I would give six stars if I could. I am the type that gets a short cut and enjoys it as it grows in. He is one of the only barbers I have ever been to that gives you a cut so complimentary to the shape of your head that there is no awkward phase as it gets longer. Visited Tim the Barber for my first time yesterday. I've had it with waiting hours for a haircut and decided to try something new. Tim works by appointment only and is very responsive. From my understanding he is generally booked up but accommodated an appointment in the evening within 24 hours. Only a couple of people cut my hair so I was reluctant to try anyone new. Overall Tim is responsive to your needs and accommodates the hair cut you are looking for. If you do not like the way your cut is going, speak up. The style of cut was a little different than what I'm used to. I was honestly a little shy to tell Tim to fade it up a little higher. It's a new, neat, clean look I am going to test out. A few months ago one of my best friends recommended Barber Tim Piper. Yesterday, was the third month that Tim cut my hair. I had spent the previous year searching for the best barber in Palm Springs. I was never satisfied with the haircuts that I got until Tim cut my hair. Conversations with Tim are so easy. He is a great listener who did exactly what I wanted him to do in cutting my hair. Tim is the best barber I have ever had the pleasure of getting a haircut by! A few years ago I cut off my long hair that I had for almost a decade and realized I have no idea what I want to do for style. I was getting frustrated with my short hair and couldn't find a reliable barber or stylist to work with me. When I found Tim is was like the planets aligned for this chance encounter. I had an appointment with a barbershop up in Temescal and they called to cancel on me but I really wanted to my hair cut that day on a limited schedule. I looked on yelp and saw Tim who is only a few miles away from me and decided to give it a shot. I called him and he scheduled me for the same day right when I needed a cut. When I arrived he took unbelievably good care of me. Shampood my hair, gave me a hot towel treatment, then took a while to look at my hair before he made a single cut to see where I wanted to go with my cut. I decided to tell him to trust his instincts and see what happened. Great decision! He found a way to tame my wild and uncooperative hair and gave me a bunch of tips on how to manage it in the future. The entire thing set me back $25! I hate writing long reviews but it turns out I'm a haircut connoisseur/snob, and I felt I had to give a detailed explanation for my dissatisfaction. Short version: Tim is a nice enough guy but I just got a mediocre haircut from him. I've had my hair cut by a number of different places, from high-end salons to cheap Asian barbers to cutting it myself. The problem is that he lacks attention to detail and his tools are poor quality. Long version: I was excited to try Tim out because he's very well-reviewed on Yelp and his prices are in the lower-to-mid range. I showed Tim a picture of the hairstyle I wanted - a basic men's haircut with a slight fade and longer hair on top that is all combed to one side. He looked at it quickly and was ready to go. I asked him if he wanted to keep the picture open because it seemed like he only glanced at it, but he declined. About twenty minutes later, he was finished, which was the first warning sign. I haven't received a haircut in 3 months so it should have taken more than twenty minutes to finish. Tim hands me the mirror (he has an odd habit of keeping the customer turned away from the mirror so that they can't see the cut as it's happening). Lo and behold, the result did not look like the picture. He gave me a chunky fade that was reminiscent of a 90's Asian-boy mushroom cut. He also had my hair parted in the nether-region between a side-part and center-part. I told him that all the hair should be combed to one side like the picture. That's when he uttered the worst words you can hear from a barber - "uh-oh." He explained that he cut the hair too short on one side to be able to do that. See? This is what the picture is for! We agreed the best thing to do would be to just fix the fade so that it was higher, which he did serviceably. Then he gave me a shampoo and eucalyptus face wrap. Nothing too remarkable about it, but it's a nice value add-on considering the whole package is just $25. After I got home, I realized how many errors there were. I had suspected there was a problem with Tim's razor. When I took a closer look at my haircut, there were lots of hairs that were longer than the rest. Also, my neck was still red hours after the haircut. Both are telltale signs that the blade isn't sharp enough or is not adjusted correctly. Even worse, my fade had noticeably shorter patches shaved into it. This means he was freehanding it and messed up. I also had told him not to shave my sideburns straight across and to leave the natural shape. Instead, he didn't cut them at all and the hair there was significantly longer than the fade higher up my head. An experienced barber should know that no one wants their sideburn hair longer than the rest of their hair unless they are asking for mutton chops. Fortunately, these were things I could fix myself, which I did. Overall, my expectation was to receive a haircut that was better than an Asian salon but not as good as a high-end salon. What I ended up with was basically an Asian salon haircut - one that I'm only 60% satisfied with and has glaring mistakes that I have to fix myself. It wasn't all bad and Tim definitely earned some goodwill points. At one point, when he was spraying my hair with water, he noticed he was getting some in my face and made a hand shield to protect me. Kinda cute. Also, he takes cash only and I only had credit card. So he told me where my bank was and he let me walk over and come back to pay him. You know if this was an Asian salon, I would've had to leave my car as collateral, lest I steal $10 from them. But in the end, I just can't give higher than 2 stars for a haircut that wasn't like the picture I brought and necessitated me fixing it myself. For the value, I'd rather get a comparable haircut from an Asian salon for less than half the price. read more

Having just moved to Oakland from NYC I didn't know what to expect from a west coast barber. Tim provided the same level of quality, without the up-sells of expensive beard trims, at a lower price. This is to be expected given the comparative cost of real estate, but it translates to a much better deal for me. $25 for an excellent hair cut with free beard trim is great. He's also very friendly and full of local tips. Bottom line: Tim's going to be my barber for the foreseeable future. read more

I've never had a barber make me feel more at home and more welcome than Tim. He is a Master Barber and takes care of each cut like his life depends on it. He work should be considered art and I always look forward to seeing him not just for the haircut but for the eucalyptus face wash as well. I always get the face wash as it really helps me relax after a long week and Tim always makes you feel like a king. The price is half of the going rate in the city and theres no frills. Just a guy and his skills. My only wish is that he clones himself so he can take more appointments. If there is anyone I would trust my hair with it's Tim.
