Great barber. I don't normally enjoy talking to barbers because I'll admit, small talk isn't my thing and I'm generally quite awkward about it. Tim is an excellent, corteous barber and a great guy. I am unable to keep my hair trim and often don't notice til people start dropping quarters in my morning cup of coffee. So when I need a haircut, its an emergency. Tim is great about promptly finding me a slot in his tight schedule. Just call and work with him. I was in the Bay Area for a wedding and realized it had just been too long since I had my last haircut. Not sure where to go in an unfamiliar city, but, thankfully, Yelp led me to Barber Tim Piper. I've found Tim through Yelp (here) and as it was a really high-rated establishment I've decided to give it a try. I have recently moved into Oakland and used to go to the same barber for about 15 years - which made my need of picking a new one a hard and risky challenge. These were my findings: - He is a very cool guy; - The place is chill; - The price is good; - His work has quality. I must say that my cuts with him aren't consistent in the sense that I do get a somehow different look when I go there - it may be related to his inspiration in the given date - but I tell you that, as a very picky person, I'm very impressed by how pleased I am with my look even right when I step out of my appointment with him. I used to need about a week before my hair grew and accommodated in a way I liked it with my previous barber but now I feel ready to go right when he is done. His cut's length progression isn't as smooth as it used to be where I cut before but I really like what he does and I'll keep coming back and letting him work his magic. read more

Tim doesn't deserve 5 stars on yelp. He is a terrible barber that gave me an uneven haircut that was too short. He also turned me away from the mirror while he cut my hair so I could not see what he was doing. I told him to trim down my sides which he did not do correctly. He isn't fun to talk to and doesn't seem very knowledgable about barbering. Save your money and don't go here. read more

Finally, a good, solid, mens' barber in the Bay Area that is friendly, affordable, and skilled. Tim is a really easy going and knowledgeable barber that does the job right. He asks you if you like what you see every step of the way and customizes to exactly how you want it. He takes his time and gives you a hot towel and shampoo after the cut is complete. When you visit Tim, you get more than just a sweet gentleman's haircut, a close shave, or a tidy trim. You get 30 minutes or so with a genuinely sweet human being who's great for laugh but even greater at what he does. I feel extremely comfortable when I get my hair cut with Tim, and I've been doing so for the better part of 3 years now. He's always been interested in what I'm looking for, but brings his own knowledge and expertise to the table. The result has always been a haircut I feel good about right away, AND one that lasts on and on until I find myself back again in his barber chair. Tim is friendly and kind, always spins a good yarn, and is able to hold a pleasant conversation while masterfully doing his work. His space is warm and inviting and the location is perfect right by 12th street BART and in the beautiful Swan's building in Old Oakland. Time is also one of the most reasonably priced barbers in the East Bay, but the fair price doesn't guarantee anything less than an excellent look.
