The suace and spice on the food is done just right to highlight the flavors of the food. Trattoria Altanella was a fantastic find....off the beaten path (and down an easily missable alleyway, but google maps was spot on!) and reasonably priced for the quality of the food. The restaurant seating is on a smaller canal with views across from Guideca (short water taxi from the square area) in a more local, leisurely neighborhood area. Ambiance was certainly a plus. The staff were exceedingly attentive and offered great recommendations on both the food and wine pairings. The scallops were some of the best I have ever experienced, along with the gin & lime mussels. Hats off to the chef! (and her husband). We loved every item we ordered so much (the homemade gnocchi are fantastic!) the first night that we literally made a reservation for the following night to be able to sample more of the items on the menu the following evening (canceling our other reservation at another spot!). NO REGRETS....seriously some of the freshest seafood and authentic local flavors that we have run across (from someone who lived in New Orleans for 24 yrs!) Ok, I will make a list what is great: - A hip, 'young', yet Italian decoration (with Wi-Fi) - The food is served in a very alternative way. In jars, coloured square plates, beautifully decorated, with quality glasses and cutlery. - The food is clearly freshly made. Even the chocolate in the chocolate biscuit (desert served with vanilla mouse) tasted 'home made'. - The menu lists gluten-free items - The staff is willing to help you with your choice. I don't know much about wine so they suggested one to me. Last night we were there and the waiter knew the name of the wine my girlfriend wanted, before my girlfriend asked for it. - The restaurant has a wine store where the wine bottles on the menu and many more can be bought. The restaurant is also (just) a bar to 'just have a drink' (and a snack). On Sunday afternoon a la carte lunch is replaced by a buffet only (I did not try).
