Let me start off by saying my partner and I had so much fun on our three night stay here. The hotel feels nestled in to the jungle and hillside. The rooms/balconies were spacious. The activity staff kept the energy going at the family pool. We also enjoyed the spa. We were not thrilled with the food. I thought breakfast and lunch were fine, both meals had attentive service and the food was okay. Dinner in the à la carte restaurants is where things really fell apart. The restaurants were so short staffed I felt bad for the servers, they were in the weeds every night. It seemed like the hostess had to help on the floor so guests would wait at the hostess stand outside for 5-10 minutes before being acknowledged. Once seated it was a good 10 minutes before being acknowledged by a server and getting water or a drink order. One night friends we met at the pool invited us to join their table & the server got annoyed with us. Overall, the accommodations for the all inclusive is a decent value. I would say if you want to stay here, just avoid the à la carte dinner options and check out a local restaurant. read more

We enjoyed our stay at Barcelo Puerto Vallarta. We stayed in a suite with pool side view and we were able to get a crib for our toddler. We had most of our meals at buffet La Fuenta, and we always found something tasty to eat for adults and our toddler, like personal omelets for breakfast, tacos, fruits, milk, etc. Sometimes they had different themes for the food so there is some variety. Our favorite specialty restaurant was Los Arcos, the steak house, and the least favorite was Capri, the Italian. The resort offers evening shows at the theater that were fun to watch, activities for kids and adults during the day, pool with pool bars, access to the sandy beach (not the calmest or the cleanest but the sand was a lot of fun for our toddler and I saw two large stingrays swimming by) and you can borrow kayaks if you like to go from one side to the other of the beach. Staff and service were excellent, they helped us have a great time and take care of our toddler. The drinks are on the light side though, I was always with a cocktail in my hands and I didn't even get tipsy, and my tolerance isn't that high lol. Oh and bring some dollars for tips. read more

The food at this resort has been the worst we have ever had at a resort. We have vacationed every year all over Mexico including Barcelo in Playa del Carmen and have never been so unhappy. The food has been cold, hard, flavorless and overall bad. This includes what is supposed th3 be the premium fine dining restaurants. In addition, the lack of options throughout the day with the ridiculous clothing rules is crazy for a beach resort. We had to go off property to eat even though we paid for the silly premium package. The location. And hotel are beautiful but the food and lack of friendly customer service here will keep us from returning or recommending it to anyone. My family and I stayed here for a few days to celebrate my mother's birthday. Check-in went smooth but to our surprise this place only has one wheelchair for the whole resort. Better bring your own or you will have to rent one to use for personal use. I had emailed the resort in advance to see if they could set up a special surprise our my room, along with another issue in the reservation. They replied about the particular issue, but never the birthday comment. When we got to the resort, nothing was planned in our room. It was only on the day of her birthday we went to the premium lounge to discuss the inconsistencies of our room. The mini bar was supposed to be filled everyday which it wasn't after several attempts calling. The man in the premium lounge had someone refill our mini bar and also set up the room for my mother's birthday. We used the Lovelight Studio on the resort to take pictures and they turned out AMAZING! The price was very reasonable especially compared to the US. Samuel did such a great job capturing my family on camera. Also the lovely ladies at the SPA. They did amazing. One of the best massages I've ever had. Shout out to the manager Yazbel and her employees Rosalinda, Julidia, and Ariana for treating us to amazing outdoor massage by the beach. The food is probably one of the worst I've had at any resorts I've visited in the past. All-inclusive food isn't always the best but I've had way BETTER than this. Overrall, the resort is small. I wish it was more accessible friendly for disabilities. Not much of a nightlife. They had an adults only pool along with a family pool, but which was weird is that the swim up pool bar is on the family side instead of the adults only side. Wouldn't it be the other way around? I liked how the adult only side was secluded with a jacuzzi. We made the best of it, the price was reasonable but you also get what you paid for. Not sure if I would be back. read more

I highly recommend choosing a Hyatt over this resort. While the wait staff was friendly and accommodating, the front desk and phone staff were incredibly rude and unprofessional. After checking out, we realized we left some items in our room. I called the front desk to simply confirm if they had found them before we made the drive all the way back. Instead of helping, they told me to call back later and proceeded to hang up on me three separate times. Beyond the terrible customer service, the food at the snack bar is awful, and unlike most other resorts, you can't bring the food to the poolside. The appalling behavior of the desk staff completely ruined the experience. I do not recommend staying here. read more

As promised before, here is my update of the resort. I absolutely loved the location, views around it were just breathtaking amazing and spacious rooms and pools, especially adults only, it had the same depth all around and maintained a perfect temperature water. Activities, especially water aerobics were offered everyday at 12,pm, were just perfect. Buffett had different food every day, not the absolute best, but not the worst either, average and fulfilling, We tried 3 out of 4 restaurants that required reservations. Capri - Italian, was nice and fresh (service was always good), Los Arcos, we were promised steak and lobster, but were told that lobsters were not available anymore and substituted by shrimps , that was disappointing because we were not told that until we were ready to place the order, even the sign next to the entrance still mentioned steak and lobster still not a major disappointment for me not to plan to come back here. The best food was offered by the Spanish restaurant Don Quixote, delicious and flavorful food, great salad bar, fresh, live entertainment was nice touch, great service, so guys do show your gratitude and do leave a tip I absolutely will recommend to not to skip this restaurant. I don't have enough great things to say about our family's 5-night stay at Barcelo this past week. We spent our Spring Break on the sixth floor of Tower 1 and it was absolute paradise. I waited each day for the many issues mentioned by so many travelers: "disgusting food," "inattentive staff," "rundown property" and saw NONE of it. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms spacious and clean, the staff, especially in the buffet and the entertainment/Barcy Club a joyful delight, and the location unbeatable. Sure the food isn't FINE DINING, but it's tasty and convenient and fueled us for our excursions. As frequent visitors to MX, we are always cautious about what we eat, skipping berries and lettuce and other foods that are known suspects for food poisoning. And guess what! None of us got sick despite eating breakfast and dinner on site every day. Full disclosure: each day we left the property in the morning for some sort of adventure, and only returned mid afternoon to laze by the pool. Horseback riding to Quimixto waterfalls, water taxi to Yelapa, ziplining with Los Veranos Canopy Tour, and a snorkel and cliff jumping tour with Mismaloya Extreme -- all were SO fun and super easy thanks to our location. I heard a young girl beg her dad to leave the hotel one morning and the dad respond "why? We have a pool right here!" I felt so bad for her... that would be incredibly monotonous. So perhaps some of the folks commenting that the Barcelo is small, boring, bad food etc just needed to get off the property for a minute to fully appreciate the loveliness of the hotel. We only ate at the a la carte restaurant once (I forget what it's called - the steakhouse) and our food was delicious, but we didn't make a second reservation because we preferred being able to go into La Fuente at any time - it was just too convenient and my daughter loved the novelty of the buffet. She also loved the Barcy Club, although I SO wish more families utilized that amenity. We hoped she would meet some friends there (she's an only child) but several times she was the only one and I felt guilty leaving her for an hour -- but she kept asking to go back, and Mom and Dad loved the opportunity to grab a glass of wine and watch the sunset! She also met friends in the pool and everyone was so, so nice. If it's any sign how much we loved it, we started scoping out dates to return next year, hoping to bring our friends. It was just too good. (PS - Sorry if this comes off as judgy, but my husband and I couldn't help but roll our eyes at people who staked out their loungers at 6:30am, using designated towel clips and bands to take the closest chairs to the pool and then not returning till midday. It's around 45 minutes from the airport. I always book the private pickup, so it's fun to actually have a city tour on the way to the resort. The champagne is so good here. Will have to order some when we get home. Very nice, clean, and beautiful pools and beaches with easy access. And I really need to shout out that they offer lots of beautiful floaties for free. Love the suite ( I booked one long suite, and it comes with additional room of two single beds). The bath tub and shower room are separate with sinks and toilets. So we basically get two sets of rooms and bathrooms, which are good for two families. Nice balcony, too, with view of pools and beaches. They also have the arcade, $25 for 30 games. You can also make the reservation for basketball, tennis and pickle ball court. There are a lot of restrictions here, which is a bit annoying TBH. If you stay 4 nights, you only get two fine dining dinners, and the upgrade to additional fine dining dinner is $75 per person per meal. NO food allow in the room, beaches, or pools which is new to us. All the 5 resorts we have been, the staff would even bring us food there. The staff are not very attentive here, no eye contacts, no greetings, and we never got drinks served by the pools or beaches because no one came over. Most people get drinks at the bars ourselves (one by the buffet, and the other one is the swimming up bar). No good coffee, just plain latte or black. Limited dining options. Only 4 fine dining restaurants, the best is the steakhouse. The steak, octopus , and lobster bisque, are very good. The Spanish restaurant is not bad. The Australian salad and fish are so good, but the lamb chop is very gamey. You can totally skip the sushi place and Italian restaurant. read more

Barcelo Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful all-inclusive resort. The service was excellent. The pools are a pleasure. The food and drinks plentiful and delicious. There is a spa attached where massages are available. I felt very pampered and enjoyed my stay tremendously. read more

This resort was the biggest disappointment. The food was hands down the worst I have ever tasted in PV. Many times things were cold. There were lots of goulash's. It was shocking how bad the food was. Even taxi drivers who drove us around confirmed " you don't eat at Barcelo" . The beach was non existent most days. The area that consistently had chairs was on an embankment, so the lounge chairs were angled downward. The property is clearly older. The rooms are large but dated. Need to stream on your laptop cuz there is no access to channels. The staff was attentive. We expected more of a Spanish affiliated property. I will never recommend any properties of the Barcelo Group. They bought it in 2005 for 31 million and put very little back into it over the years. The food was absolutely the worst. Great Hospitality from the start to the end of our stay. Amenities are great, my teenagers enjoyed the fitness center. Amazing themed restaurants and food is great. The seafood night at the snack bar is a bit uncomfortable as it was really humid. There's a dress code for every themed restaurants and only by reservation. Food is great and service is superb. Very hospitable and they try to understand you as much as possible. Most people we encountered spoke English well enough to have a good conversation. The sunsets are amazing. The activity center at the beach are great, we borrowed kayak for a couple of days. Our bed was made everyday and it's so nice to come back in the room after a tiring day at the beach and pool... and consuming alcohol :) If you have not travelled around Mexico beach region, test there's that musty smell that will linger. It's no different from being in Cancun or Cozumel or even Hawaii during rainy season when humidity is at peak. Over all great accommodations, Hospitality and well stocked & choices food outlets. Very clean & highly recommend. Really close to Los Arcos. Super quiet compared to when we were here in the past close to downtown. My family love it here. read more

When I first booked this hotel, I was hesitant on what I was going to find because of all the reviews, but I decided on whatever happens to just let it be. We booked our transportation through the hotel since we did our research and it would be much cheaper for 10 of us from the airport. Once we got to the hotel we checked in, and one of the guys put our luggage in our room. The premium room had an amazing view in tower two with a nice welcome gift for the adults and the kids under the age of 12. It did have a smell that people complained about, but this smell I have found in places in California and other places in Mexico near the beach. All the staff were very welcoming and throughout our stay, the staff were helpful and nice. There were a few hiccups throughout our stay, but not any that ruined our vacation and were taken care of right away. read more

I'm very disappointed. There have been minor things here and there and was not planning on leaving a review but today was the day. We made reservations for Los Arcos restaurant in the resort for 7pm. We left at 8:10pm bc they had yet to bring our food. The hostess said the other table had received their food bc they didn't order appetizers. First of all what does their table have to do with mine? Over an hour of wait time is ridiculous! And don't point out something else to try and make your end reasonable. When we arrived the majority of the tables were unoccupied. It wasn't busy at all. And since we're here, the bathroom door to our room is terrible! It doesn't slide, I have to grab the entire door and attempt to slide it or ask a family member to help me open this door. We all did. The new year party was nice, the servers at the buffet were all very tentative. But the hour wait for a reservation dinner and the lame excuse outshines the rest. Only one elevator was working on our side. During the New Year holiday with so many people. I do not recommend this place and we will not be returning. read more

We were greeted with mimosas and smiles in their beautiful lobby. All the rooms face the ocean and seem to have amazing views with a good size balcony. The room was spacious, but a few things I was not impressed with were the comfort of the bed/sheets, some areas needed additional cleaning, and the way you turn on the ac/light was unique. They had a variety of restaurants (all inclusive), but some you did need reservations and you get a choice to attend 2 of the restaurants that require reservations. You will not go hungry or thirsty here plenty of options and you will be sure to find something you like or don't like. This hotel is at the very end of puerto Vallarta and most of the excursions leave from the bottom of the mountain( it is the best way to describe) so this would be about a 30-45 min drive. If you are planning excursions I would recommend staying closer towards the entrance of hotel zone. read more

There's plenty of mixed reviews about this property. Just based on my experience, it was juts whatever. Personally, if it was my choice, I would have pass but as we were all here for a birthday, it wasn't much to say. Right from the start when we checked in, a total mess. We arrived later in the evening as we had a late flight into Puerto Vallarta. There was 2 staff checking people in and it was only our group that was there. I was the first to check in but ended up being the last to get a room. And that was an ordeal. The gentleman, who was sweet but seemed a bit pressured as he was trying to handle everyone at the same time. I get it.... We were finally checked in, almost 30 min or so later. Given our room key and proceeded to our room. Upon arrival, we put the key in and noticed that there was lock latch from the inside. Odd, then noticed a shadow with a voice. We were given a room with someone else in it. As the cake to open the door, it was a good thing that it happened to be one of our friend that also checked in. A couple minutes later, the gentleman came running up and was apologetic about double booking the room. He took out luggage and we proceeded back down to check in. From there, another glass of welcome drink was needed as it took him a while to check us in again. He then told us that he was having the other lady go to a room that we now were assigned to. And to see if there was no occupancy in there. Which we had to wait again until she arrived. Between all that, it took over an hour just to check in and get a room. Mind you there was 8 of us that arrived together. I was the first to check in and last to get a room. It just keeps going downhill from there. Our room didn't have a mini bar, so no drinks. Didn't noticed it till after we got in from dinner at the buffet as all the restaurants were booked. They manage to bring one up the next day. And with the restaurant situation, you could only book a reservation morning of. And most of the time are normally all taken unless you want the first available normally. Don't understand why we couldn't pre book like most restaurants. Even with reservations, we noticed that they tell you it's not available time wise but during dinner numerous of time, restaurants was empty. Then, they had two power outage drying our stay. Mind you, it's hot and humid and to walk back into your room without ac, let's say it wasn't pleasant. Even cooling off with a cold shower, it was in the dark as you needed to key to control everything but with the power outage, it wasn't the call. Could only imagine what the guest with wheel chairs had to endure if they happened to be on a higher floor. Pros, the property is nice. It's has it own beach, private in a sense as this was the only property utilizing it. It's public outside the rope area. Water was nice but be aware, there were loads of dogs on the beach. And they do their business there and we noticed that the owner or whoever don't pick up after them. They tend to cover it with sand and I happened to walk on a pile of it one day... good thing the water was right there... your surroundings is lush rain forest. There's plenty of boat activity outside which is great. Rooms were big with big patio/balcony. Cons, your far from things. There's not much outside your property. If you want to go into town, it's about a half hour taxi ride. Depending on traffic, it could take longer. Pool towels are given with a pool key which we never got when we checked in. Dinner reservation can only be made day off and tend to book fast. The convenience store doesn't allow usd, only peso or credit cards. The late night bar area with all that. Food that was served there as a snack was pretty much whatever. Certain days, it looked dry. Overall, property was nice and ok. Restaurant staff was great and friendly. I did have a gentleman that was always so welcoming with the drinks while on the beach. It's far from things so be advise. Would I come back, probably not. L read more

Mixed feelings about this place. rooms clean and beds very comfortable. Staff friendly and most speak fluent english. we are here for wedding and about 75% of all guest coming booked here. we wanted to do dinner here at specialty restuarant and have bride and groom who live here and didn't need room join us (we would pay their bills from restuarant) which they would not allow unless we got them as additional guest in room at $181 each. Bride and groom were not even allowed on premise unless we did a day pass at $100 per person and then they had to be off premise by 6 pm. absolutely no flexibility! you can't make restuarant reservations until 9am day of... we went down at 1000 and by that time the Italian had no space until 8:30 and Spanish at 9:30. who wants to eat that late... shows at 9pm which means we miss show. since our last stay here they have gone down hill with flexibility and trying to be accommodating! haven't ate here yet except breakfast due to their inflexibility and limited reservations. i'll have to think twice before staying here again. serve pepsi products but no Dr Pepper or Rootbeer. No coke products. we went to town and bought our own, they look very displeased with us but didn't say anything. read more

So happy on our return trip to Puerto Vallarta and Mismaloya after 4 decades ....this hotel wasn't here back then, but I'm glad it's here now! It was Rosalba's, in reservations, warm personality and professionalism that helped us pick hotel Barceló formally La Jolla de Mismaloya. We were also pleased by the warm reception we received upon arrival and during our stay by Cassandra Rodriguez, at the front desk, helpful and very friendly and warm. So many fine staff I can't forget Elizabeth Gavino, the excellent concierge, it's really quite impressive as is the Hotel and it's beautiful location. This all inclusive Hotel has the most sincerely friendly, and accommodating staff, please tip and tip appropriately. The pools are immaculate and as is the beach. I love that beautiful turquoise water! Though I bought an arsenal of repellent for rumored mosquitoes I didn't see a one, though up in jungle, I saw a few. The nightly music is loud and fun, however the addition of free flowing alcohol creates some loud obnoxious behaviour, it would be nice to see a more visible presence of security guys on the grounds at night, to inhibit those experiencing their first tango with booze. Wolf cries and yelling do not make for an enjoyable time for sober relaxing folks. The maid service is also top notch, our friendly attendant Victoria also enhanced our experience staying there. Her smile brightened every encounter. A very nice destination for a pleasant exotic vacation. A multitude of activities and shows are also available throughout the day for both adults and children. I so wanted to love this place. What they get right, they get really right. What they do the ball on is really bad. When I was there A few years ago it was almost magical. I booked the premier room and it is definitely in the top 5 accommodations I've been in. The architecture, the gardens, the people, the people are truly amazing. The room had a wrap around balcony overlooking the ocean. The sound of the waves made great sleeping until music from the club wiped them out. Even after closing all the windows and drapes, the racket was awful. The management - inexcusable in my view. They played very loud music starting at 10pm until after midnight. At 10 I called the manager and asked them to do something, they responded they would ask them to turn it down. At 10:30 when I called back 'no one is in charge until the night manager comes on at 11". At 11:10 please call back in 10 minutes. At 11:30 I reach the night manager and he says yes, that's just the way it is, he isn't going to change it. I spoke with their customer service manager the next day. She felt that the night manager should have done something, the 10pm manager should have done something. That night it was live acoustic music (vs amplified instruments) and there was no problem. The food... There's always going to be a limit to the quality is the buffet food anywhere you go. Paying for the upgraded room entitled is to book the a la carte restaurants, however not on the day we arrived. We tried the steak house and the Italian restaurant. Both were disappointments. Neither place was even half full when we went so it is beyond understanding why we couldn't get reservations the first night. If you read the website, booking your room through there should entitle you too unlimited a la carte dining, I would print that out and bring it with you if you are counting on it. The steak was less than 1/2 inch thick, grisly and tough. I could only eat about 2/3rds of it. The wife had the surf and turf. The two pieces of shrimp were pretty good, the steak not so much. At the Italian place, the mahi mahi was not fully cooked but then the ciabbatta bread want either. The wife's pasta was too watery and to say it didn't sit well with her from 2 the following morning until noon is putting it mildly. If you like "blow your eardrum out" loud music, lousy food in an amazing setting, this may be the place for you. If you like being on the beach and enjoying the surf at night with at least respectable food, keep moving. Sadly the staff were friendly and when they could, helpful. If they replace the management and add some focus to the food, I'd go back every year. With the current management, I'm outta there. Such a shame. read more

Hello friend! I hope you read this before you book!!! As I'm laying here in the hotel bed, with 15or so extremely itching bites on my body from bed bugs, I wonder if this trip was worth it. It wasn't!! 1) food is terrible, actually terrible, not only buffet but their "fine dining" is garbage as well. Spanish food, sushi, Italian all 3 were terrible. 2) Dumb rules and staff who have 0 logic in their heads. You see a bunch of completely bald man wear a hairnets on their BALD heads, cause it's the rule!!! 8 of us wanted to play ping pong and pool at the same time, but the lady that who provides the balls wouldn't let us play both because she needs an ID as a deposit for each game, and I had one, but guess what?? One ID per game, I don't carry 2 IDs , none of my friends brought their wallets from room. So she didn't let us play pool, because apparently 1 ID isn't good enough. No, no signor, 1 ID per 1 game.... No, no sir, no.. no sir. It's the rule sir..no... 3) The entire hotel smells like mold, and you can even see black mold in bathroom. Our friends brought us here, and honestly after this, I don't want to consider them as friends anymore. Friends don't do that to friends!!! They have been here 3 times and they claim that it was never like that before , but my friends are cheap and I don't think they care about what they eat, as long as it's cheap!! I don't make enough money to spend it on bad vacations, I'm used to good food, and great service when I vacation.. So if you are a cheap like my friends, go ahead and book this garbage resort, $1200 for 4 nights! Personally id rather pay double or triple 3 and actually enjoy my vacation. The choice is yours!!! The trip had a good first day but second night my group came back late (buffet closed at 11) and tried to call in room service. They answered, took our order, and said it would take 45 minutes to arrive. I waited the time and when passed I called again. Person at the front told me it would only take 10 more minutes. Mind you, I ordered some quesadillas and chips. The welcome sheet says room service for premium level is 24/7. I went to the front to ask about my food and NO ONE WAS THERE. The whole place was empty. Pretty disappointed because the food service is already mid, and the restaurants are reservation only. While I can acknowledge the shortcomings of this resort I still decided to give it 5 stars because it was such an overall wonderful experience. The hotel entrance is very spacious airy and welcoming. The staff is friendly and helpful. The pool is very nice. The buffet is simple , basic, nothing to call home about but you won't go hungry. The fresh fruit was my favorite As for the restaurants that require reservations they were nice and everything was delicious The beach is right under the pool and very cute and quaint and small with little massage shops and little cafes etc . The locals are what make this place extra magical. We took taxis and the public bus and felt perfectly safe on both. Bring lots of change because they never have any change anywhere which makes tipping tricky and is a crucial part of visiting PV as the locals depend on the tips to make a living. The room was super big. 2 bedroom 2 full bath with balcony. The rooms was perfect clean. When we checked in there was coffee grinds all around the coffee machine so obviously that wasn't so much as wiped down as well as the area under the bathroom sink. I ran a tissue over it and it was black so that hadn't been cleaned in days but probably weeks. I think I'll start packing wipes to clean surfaces down during travel. Another complaint was that the rooms didn't have bathtub just showers. Update: Raising the review to 2 stars. Manager came to our room and provided free doctor checkup. Doctor suspects we got poisoned from eating shrimp. You might think you are getting a good value since the resorts in on the cheaper side. However you get what you paid for. Everything folks are saying in the reviewes is true. We booked premium room from 26th Dec to 7th Jan, but decided to checkout on 31th since the resort is that bad. We all good food poisoning, including 9 month old baby. Even forgoing that the food is mediocre at best. Rooms stink of mold and it took 3 days of running fans on hight to make it tolerable. Even otherwise the rooms are dated and cheap. The staff is rude and barely speak english. Launge chairs have a no reservation policy, but its not enforced so guests leave their towels everywhere. That is not necessarily a problem, until you realize that they only have enough chairs to serve at most 50% of guests. The whole resort is badly maintained and cheap. Pay a bit more and get a decent resort. read more

FREEBIRD HELL. Well I've learned that Barcelo translates to "one of no taste or hearing." I've stayed at numerous resorts and all inclusives from the Bahamas, Cabo, Cancun, Dominican Republic, Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta before coming to Barcelo. This has been a frustrating experience and one Id tell people to avoid. I just edited down from 2 stars to one after holding my 9 month old daughter after she threw-up as the Norovirus is rampant at this facility. Avoid this destination. The Good: friendly staff. Nice pools (adult only, small kids with little slide, sports pool for polo and bill) and a kids pool with swim up bar. Drinks are better then some places but I've had better places as limited too shelf options. The remoteness is pleasant depending on what looking for and does limit the college spring break crowd which is nice since I'm no longer a spring breaker. Busy but not crowded so access and lounge chairs never an issue. And again gorgeous views although see my accommodations for issues with view or lack of. Accommodations: The grounds are nice, lush and a nice building overall with great showers with the overhead rain showers with great pressure. Large and clean and beds comfortable. Unfortunately, we did not get the deluxe King size ocean view we booked at extra costs. On arrival we got doubles. When I let them know this is not what we reserved - moved us to a king size with no view (except foliage) on top of a bar (see entertainment). Entertainment: Evidently the establishment is run by a 48 yr old male trapped in his wannabe 17 yr old self who believes you need to blare music all day with the activity folks and finish with Live band/Karaoke till midnight. I'm all for evening entertainment options. But every other resort I've been to has the club unattached so it doesn't ruin everyone else's stay. Being Awoken to freebird And yes I can't make this up - Highway to Hell is not what I expect in a place that advertised itself as high end luxury. It's a horseshoe shaped resort on the ocean which is great except the sound is basically amplified. FOOD: The food has lots of options but is fair. Not really better then any other location I've visited. Disappointing since advertise for their culinary arts. Note the legal boiler plate of their homepage has broader restrictions then most regarding inclusive but don't tell you details ...until you arrive. So here are those important details. You have to go to concierge to reserve at any of 4 restaurants other than the buffet. Here is the catch: If you have 5-7 night stay your all-inclusive only gives 3 dinners at these establishments. If less 3 nights 1 dinner and 2 dinners if that 3-4 range. BEACH: Gorgeous views although many boats right up to you. Sand is find and have beach chairs for you. I wondered why many not I used to learn there is a bug issue (unsure if sand fleas or mosquitoes but numerous large bites on many guests. Unfortunately my wife included with spray. Not sure if this just a rare issue or a consistent problem. But Just be prepared In the end I'd recommend a resort in hotel district with more surrounding options if want the all inclusive. Absolutely love this place! This was our 5th trip here. Is it a little older and a few things may not work like other reviews have said but they send maintenance up right away. It's not a boujee hotel but they treat you like family. It's far enough away from the hustle of downtown and tucked away in a jungle atmosphere. The boats on the beach can take you snorkeling or anywhere else you request. The little village next door is amazing and so fun. Good food and you can find $20 massages. Don't be afraid to cross the creek. Also, I cant say enough good things about Cesar and his service. He out does himself everytime we come to the Barcelo. His famous line is "who say no?" If you want to be treated like family, request Cesar for all of your needs. He works different resturants every night. Thank you for treating us so well! A couple of weeks before our stay, I got an email from Adelina Romero. She let me know that it was her job to help book our transportation to and from the airport, as well as any excursions we wanted to go on during our stay. She provided me with plenty of literature on excursion options, and asked for our flight information so that she could arrange for a taxi to and from for us. She was great about communicating with me, confirming all excursion dates, times, and prices, as well as confirming our taxi service. Upon arrival, we were greeted right away and someone took our luggage. We were able to be checked in fairly quickly. We went up to our room to settle in. We booked a Grand Master Suite with a Sea Front View - Premium Level. It was a corner room on the 8th floor. The room was very clean, but the decor itself it pretty outdated. Our room had two bathrooms, a large jacuzzi tub, a walk in rain shower, dual sinks and two large closets. There was a wraparound balcony, one side overlooking the pool area, and the other side overlooking the ocean. Since the restaurants were closed by the time we arrived our first night, we opted for some room service. There was no menu in the room, just a small printout with a QR code to scan for the menu. The code wouldn't scan, so I dialed the room service extension, but nobody picked up. Because we booked a Premium Level room, we were told we had access to a 24 hour lounge that would have food available. While it was stocked full of any liquor you could ever want, there was next to nothing food-wise, and the food that was out, was indiscernible. A total bust! We visited it anyway a couple times each day to grab 2-4 bottled waters to stock our room. Sometimes we would luck out if there were bananas, oranges, or cookies in the lounge. Back in our room was both a mini fridge in the dining room and a mini fridge in the bedroom. Both were stocked with waters, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Corona, Corona light, potato chips and peanuts. Accessing the room's WiFi took several tries on the first night. However, once we got connected, the service was great! Our room keys would stop working on occasion, which was another oddity. We had to have them "re-keyed" about 3 times during our stay. A mild inconvenience, but staff was always happy to help. The main buffet was awesome. There was a ton of delicious items to choose from, great service, and beautiful views to enjoy while dining! We checked in with Adelina so that we could pay for the excursions we booked. She made things very simple with her directions and gave thorough details. During our first meeting with Adelina, we made dinner reservations for the week as well. There are 4 restaurants on the resort. One of them, Los Arcos, had a taco station that served beef, chicken, or al pastor tacos, or you order from a set lunch menu. As far as restaurants go, we had a steak and seafood dinner at Los Arcos, a Spanish dinner at Don Quixote, and an Italian dinner at Capri. We had great service and delicious food at the restaurants. Staff was so kind to us and made our dining experiences extremely enjoyable. The pool areas were the perfect temperature, and there were iguanas all around the pools. One pool had a volleyball net in it for water sports. The second pool had a swim-up bar in it. The third pool was adults only and it had a jacuzzi in it. It would have been nice if the "adults only" pool rules had been better enforced. I found it super bizarre that the pool in which kids ARE allowed is the only one with a swim-up bar. You'd think the bar would be better suited for the pool that kids weren't allowed in. There were several lounge chairs everywhere and 3 very large hammocks. It was so nice to lounge in the sun and take a nap in the hammock together. Barcelo is on Mismaloya Beach and nestled up against the jungle. There were stairs that went down to the beach (technically off the resort). We didn't spend a ton of time there, because there were lots of vendors trying to sell goods on the beach. There was a walking path that went out to the edge of the cove and it offered a beautiful view. The back side of the resort was up against a small fishing village. We could see a collection of small homes, and a small canal that allowed boats to come and go. Small children and stray dogs roamed freely through the small village and it had a very small town feel. Restaurants and excursions were available to patrons on the beach as well if they opted to go that route. We stored our passports and money in the safe provided in the room, and our belongings remained safe. We used the resort ATM at one point to grab some more pesos, and it was nice to have that convenience. My only personal complaint was the mosquitoes! AVOID THIS PLACE!! Where do I begin? Although it looks like a nice place from the outside and the online photos, it truly is not. They advertise as being a "5-Star Luxury" resort. I would say it's a 2-star at most. There is absolutely nothing "Luxury" about this resort. We stayed in a family room, which sounded nice and consisted of two bedrooms and two bathrooms. However, our room was in major disrepair. Lights burned out, the tv had poor reception, the sheets were poor quality and very worn, Wi-Fi was hit and miss., and A/C never worked right, as our room was always damp and humid. Maintenance came to fix the tv 3 times, and the A/C 4 times. They still never worked. The bathrooms have black mold, stained rusted toilets, cracked tiles, missing grout, and not the cleanest. On the second day, the staff broke into our safe and stole all of our money. There is a ridiculous beach towel policy, only one per person at a time with a towel card. Additionally, it is difficult to secure reservations at any of the 4 dining options for dinner. The buffet, which did not require reservations was disgusting and food would run out if you did not get there right when it opened. One evening we ate at the Capri, which is the Italian restaurant. We found a long piece of black hair in our tiramisu. Wi-Fi was hit and miss. Service was substandard. The beach was not swimmable due to the waves, current, dirty water, a huge drop off a few feet out, and all the small boats tendered there. One of the elevators did not work well. The most egregious issue, however, arose when a man sexually harassed our 16-year-old daughter in the elevator. When we reported this to the night manager, Mauricio Uribe. Not only did he fail to address our concerns, but he also attempted to deflect blame and was dismissive, stating we should have reported this immediately rather than within the 20-30 minutes we did. We suggested that he review the camera footage at the time we stated the incident occurred so that he could see what occurred. He would not take a report and merely stated that he would pass the information along to security. Considering the circumstances, my family and I felt extremely unsafe and very dissatisfied with our experience. In an attempt to salvage our vacation, the following morning we found a different resort we could move to. Prior to departing Barcelo, we spoke with the on-duty manager, Daniel Ramos, who failed to address our concerns or offer any resolution. Despite requesting a refund for the remaining 8 days left at Barcelo, Mr. Ramos read us the refund policy and refused a refund or payment of the money that was stolen from us. Mr. Ramos' blatant disregard for our safety and comfort left us with no other option than to leave this terrible resort. In addition, we spoke with the Head of Security, Fernando Macip, who stated that Elizabeth Hernandez, Supervisor of Security, took a report. He further stated they were conducting their investigation and the "employees had rights". Service was substandard. Most staff did not appear to like their jobs, as they never smiled and were not friendly. We could not get out of this resort fast enough! I waited until the end of my trip to write this review to give it a fair chance. We vacation in Mexico yearly for the past 15 years and stay at different resorts. 8 of my family members stayed at Barcelo. From the first night we wanted to check out, unfortunately they said no refunds. WE ALL HATED every minute of our stay. This is THEE WORST PLACE WE EVER EVER STAYED AT! The staff are rude, not friendly at all, with the exception of Humberto (Bellman). No one says hi or barely even looks at you. The rooms are dark and musty, the bathroom smells like sewer! Drinks, we all know it's gonna be watered down but the drinks were horrible!! 98% watered down even the wine at the "fancy restaurants" the food is absolutely disgusting! The buffet had the same 5 dishes. You can tell it's recycled from one restaurant to the other. Instead of gaining weight from an "all inclusive", I actually lost weight, practically anorexic now. The so called beach is a fishing ground. There's no ocean view, only boats and more boats. This was the most disappointing because that's what we look forward to...Swimming out in the ocean. The beach was empty cause there's no umbrellas and because you can't swim there's hundreds of boats docked!! I couldn't fit them all in my picture Day 2, my sister had to beg to switch rooms because she had bites from bed bugs! That's f'in nasty! Day 3, 12am they had a truck sucking sewer from the damn ground not only was it LOUD AF for 45 min straight it filled the air with sh*t smell that lingered in our room. 12:00am is when you decide to do this? day 4, 2am, at this point I've been crying myself to sleep but I can't even do that. There's people by the pool screaming, singing, playing music. It was so loud it sounded like they were doing it all through a speaker phone . By 3am I finally called the front desk, they sent a man to my room and all he had to say was "no entiendo" WTF did you come up here then?!? I HATE this place so much!!! They don't give a SH*T!!! Swimming pool was nice and warm and big. rooms were nice, big and clean. our problem was the food. Terrible to inedible, even in the specialty restaurants. Worse, we all got food poisoning with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea at least once during the week, which took days to recover from. I can't recommend this resort. read more

I came out with over 50 bedbug bits. They where confirm by my Doctor this morning. The air conditioner was out of gas i and couldn't sleep two night straight. Food is super basic with out much taste. PROS: *Food is good, not excellent. Steakhouse and Spanish restaurants were the best. Snack shop had great tacos and was right next to adult pool. *Adult pool wasn't crowded. 4' deep. *Staff members were all very nice and helpful. We always tipped at dinner as they work very hard in the heat. *Rooms were very nice and big; large and comfy beds. *Restocked mini bar everyday. *Premium lounge had high quality alcohol. (Only had premium as we had two rooms in our room) *You can take a boat ride to the Los Arcos rocks and snorkel.$30/per person. CONS: *Not private or secluded beach. This resort is technically not in Puerto Vallarta, but in an old fishing town of Mismaloya. Resort is on a public beach and many locals swim in their clothes. Water was funky. *Small kids came in adult only pool and were never asked to leave. Pool bar was at the other pool with all the loud kids. *ALL the drinks were watered down. Bring your beer from the mini bar room as it's in a can. *They have pool activities everyday from 11am-5pm. The girl that runs it screams into the microphone and you can hear it from your room. If you're in the adult pool, it's still super loud and annoying. She never stops talking.....all day long. They can limit the pool activities to a few a day, so there's some quiet time. *If you're in building 1 on the 300 floor (rooms 300-307), you will be above the bar and they blast music until 2am. My sister couldn't sleep and they wouldn't change her room even when they were at 80% capacity. *Wave runners were $90 for 30 minutes! Ouch Keep in mind, if you're looking for a relaxing vacation, this isn't the place for you. We've stayed at the Sheraton and the Hyatt Ziva in the past and both beaches are PRIVATE, not as many kids, very good food and alcohol. Barcelo, I feel, caters to the locals who come for a cheap getaway. It's worth a little more to go to a 5-star resort. Barcelo is more like a 3-star resort. DON"T upgrade to premium. It's expensive and not worth it. Save your money. If you want to go to the Malecon (Boardwalk), it's a $25 taxi ride. It's very nice to go and walk around, shop and eat. This is where we had the best margaritas. Keep in mind, Barcelo Resort is one of the last resorts, so you're 30-40 mins from everything. read more

Overall facility is very nice. I've been told they remodeled and the place does look nice. A few things that didn't go over well. The kid pool has the swim up bar, not the adult pool. With that said, very little staff taking drink orders although the staff working was extremely friendly and busted their butt. Victor at Don Quijote's was AWESOME!! Went the extra mile for my youngest since she's so picky. Onto the food, it was sub-par. The salmon at the Spanish restaurant was the only thing to really rave about. Luckily there are good spots just off the beach to eat. They only have one place for breakfast which gets old, especially when they don't change things up. I do have to give the hamburger from room service good remarks though, it was pretty good along with the chocolate milk. Location was good, staff was very nice and fun, food not so good. One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. Staff is poorly trained, food is low budget where you can tell corporate is cutting corners. Room smells of mold and walls are paper thin you can hear everything around you. Its not all inclusive, its more like cheap quality buffett and good luck eating at any of the restaurants. We're unable to file a complaint through their website because they're probably aware of what an awful establishment they're running. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from here, its far from DTPV & the airport as well. Breakdown: The very first thing you are met with is an upsell to premium, Alcoholic drinks were terrible. The facilities were dirty and the rooms smelled like mold and humidity. The walls are extremely thin so you hear absolutely everything, including the construction going on in the rooms next door. We had zero dinners at the resort because they make it impossible to make a reservation, all staff seems to be difficult instead of helpful. We had one reservation the entire stay and they did not seat us because my fiance was wearing shorts as he didn't bring any for 85 degree weather vacation. We will never return to any Barcelo chain again and will be very vocal about our experience on travel sites. This was extremely disappointing and we spent the last two nights debating if we should have left to another hotel but we hung tight because of our dinner reservations that we were ultimately refused.
