Barnes & Noble is my happy place. There is just something so relaxing and peaceful about walking in and seeing so many books just ready to be read and explored. I love the Starbucks is inside also . I love how Barnes & Noble has a kids program and that they can get a free treat at Starbucks. We also take part in the summer reading program where they get a free book if they read 10 books. I know the Barnes & Noble is going to have a really awesome selection and I love how they've been keeping a great stock of sprayed edge books , which are my friends favorite so it's my favorite to give her for holidays. I feel like they have their books group really well so that it is very easy to know where to go for what you need . Their game section is thoughtfully curated. I love to read the notes from employees about their favorite books. I know this is a chain, but sometimes when I'm having a bad day, I go in just because it feels like Home . I will say that their bathroom is pretty disgusting unfortunately. Most of the employees have been very kind and helpful, but there will be the occasional employee that huffs and puffs when you ask for help. Honestly, I just really love that I can go get two of my favorite things in the same building . It's also really close to the hospital so when my husband has procedures, I pop in and browse the books while I'm waiting. Thank you, Barnes & Noble for being such a happy place ! read more

Bob is very rude. Most of the employees at this location are not friendly and seem as if they just don't want to be there. Bob in particular is supposedly the manager, he has not the slightest idea of how to deal with the public and should not be in retail. He will call customers names and tell you how he's the manager so good luck doing anything about it. Bob should no longer be employed by Barnes and noble. He single-handedly is the reason I no longer shop at this location. The Brighton location has always been friendly. So generally I am more of a fan of small independent bookstores (and there are so many in Ann Arbor!) BUT I have to admit I do really enjoy visiting this Barnes & Noble! Specifically, I like all the "stuff" in the front of the store - activities, games, hobby kits, puzzles, journals. I don't find this kind of selection in other small bookstores (that of course focus most of their inventory on books). I know I can always find something for anyone on any gift giving list. Otherwise, it's a well-organized and large bookstore. Also has a Starbucks inside. Huge parking lot, which is convenient. read more

Where would we be without Barnes and Noble? It's a great place to bring my children who will be occupied for hours with all the assortment of books, toys, board games, music, movies, comic books, graphic novels and more while I get my work done. Occasionally I would stop in to grab a board game that I can't find at other stores or to see what specialty items and collectors item merchandise they have for sale. Usually B&N are on the pricey side. They also have a coffee shop with snacks and pastries. My children like going up the escalator to the upper level. B&N is a great place to go out to get your work done and to hang out or meet with other people Or bring your family to. Or just to escape to for some alone time. read more

This is one of the few large B&N's left, and I've come to appreciate it's existence given the overall dirth of bookstores these days. In fact this location (though in it's previous incarnation) was the first bookstore where I bought a book with my own money when I was still a kid in middle school, so to be fair I do attach a bit of nostalgia to this spot. There's something precious and empowering about having an expansive selection of books and magazines at your fingertips. The possibilities abound to explore any genre you choose--from fun summer reading to serious history and philosophy to cartoons/manga and magazines on horticulture and poetry. While arguably a library serves the same purpose it's nice to know you're also supporting authors with a direct purchase. Plus this particular B&N carries a sizable selection of toys and games, childrens' books, stationary and also includes a young children's area and cafe. Albeit it being a Starbucks, it's nice to have a spot to unwind for a 30 min break to read a new magazine or book. read more

Wow! This location was so fun! I did not even know this one existed but we came here after visiting Shake Shack to walk around and enjoy our evening. By reading the reviews this location has existed for quite awhile. I liked the size and layout of the store. There is a nice cafe on the ground floor with the yummy typical Barnes and Noble snacks. I am a fan of their snacks. I did not get a chance to get any on this trip, but I could see coming back to this location to hang out at the coffee shop. To get upstairs they have an elevator and an escalator. It was fun to go up and down exploring this book store. Upstairs they have a wonderful children's and young adult section plus a multitude of gifts and pop culture finds. They had some great sale tables and gift bundles. I am a fan of shopping for the holidays early especially this year. I personally secured a 2022 day by day calendar which is very early for me but I do not want to get stuck in the supply chain shortage. This is not the largest store I have seen in the vicinity but I liked their use of space. The employees were very kind and helpful during this visit. I will most likely visit again. The kids have been asking more and more to go to actual brick and mortar book stores to shop in person. read more

I decided to visit this store again when I was near the area and it was rainy. A rainy day is a perfect day to wander around a bookstore. I love that an actual bookstore still exists and this one is thriving. A $25 member fee is great if one visits often. They have so much more than books. My boyfriend and I are visiting Ann Arbor from out of town and we were amazed by the service and selection at this Barnes and Noble!! We were greeted immediately upon walking in, and the bookseller pointed us in the direction of what we needed. Another associate helped us a million with book recommendations in the genre that we were interested in. Finally, the cashier was super friendly also!! lots of books- lots of different kinds of books, which is why it gets even 2 stars from me, - but I have to stop and talk about the bathrooms. They are so disgusting that i felt like i needed a shower after using it. Seriously the more i looked close the more skeezed out I became. the vents have fur on them. the tile has fur lining the length of the wall. I think I could go to fleetwood and have a cleaner experience. i looked through reviews here and someone said they told him they clean it once a day. There is no way in hell that that bathroom has been cleaned in months. The contrast between the rest of the store and the bathrooms is striking. Do better BN! read more

I love brick and mortar bookstores. I often bring my kids here for books. [I just make sure the books are wholesome and do not feature naked animals...] I enjoy the Starbucks cafe although they are not a corporate location and do not carry Starbucks favorites like cake pops. I generally like Barnes and Noble for their large selection of travel books as well as other titles from a variety of genres. I am also a fan of their cafes where I can sit and relax while my wife shops elsewhere in the area. This particular B&N is a two-story arrangement and is fairly attractive and well kept. The staff is rather helpful and the café has plenty of seating and makes a nice place to relax and enjoy a cup of joe while browsing books. The only negative about this shop is the location. While not a terrible locale, the Washtenaw Rd. area always seems to be disproportionately bogged down with traffic and it is not as easy to get to for me compared to the other major shopping area (Eisenhower Rd./ Briarwood Mall). read more

It's always an adventure to visit Barnes & Noble. Not just books!! The selection of planners & calendars have never disappointed me. I've always found just the right one. The children's area upstairs has always offered a colorful, abundant supply of books, toys, and stuffed animals. Although we've never enjoyed a story time, my kids loved playing with the toy trains on the train table when they were younger. Now we find the inventory of books usually has what we want from the Diary of Wimpy Kid Series to Captain Underpants, to American Girls self help for young teen books. The newer coffee shop offers yummy treats for that occasional snack time for the kids. We even found a few photography magazines for my oldest (teen)'s newfound artistic love. The only only complaint I can claim is... well.... the price. But should we expect different in Ann Arbor? read more

Those who follow my reviews know I love book stores. And big chains like this are no exception. Like it or not, we need these big book stores to survive if we want print media to survive too. I read a really great article recently that went over how, if bookstore chains like B&N go down, so do a lot of publishing houses. And we need those to actually, you know, publish the books. So rah rah rah, B&N! You do your thing! So yeah, I WANT B&N succeed. I wanted Borders to succeed. But I'm seeing B&N fall down a pretty similar path that Borders did--they just don't know how to maneuver in the online realm, and right now, in an effort to compete with Amazon they're alienating their brick and mortar shoppers and that is NOT how you go about this. For example: I am currently on a fairly strict budget. When I can I prefer to go to a local, indie bookstore to buy my books and don't mind paying the cover price to help keep the afloat. However, being on a budget I don't currently have that luxury. In fact, I should even be buying ANYTHING but the new book on the Hamilton musical came out and I wanted to pick it up bc I am obsessed. Anyway. So, I price it out at a few different locations and see that B&N's website has it priced just a dollar more than Amazon. Wanting to support the store I decide to go there in person instead of ordering it online. So I go to the store yesterday and find the book, I pick it up and it has a sticker "20% off." I look online--it's 40% off there. Confused, I find a clerk and have the following conversation: Me: If the online price of a book is cheaper. What happens? Clerk: If you're in store you pay that price. It's a different price in store. Me: But there's an option to pick it up in store? If I buy it online but choose the "pick it up in store" option can I pay that price? Buy it on my phone here and then "pick it up?" Clerk: No, they'll give you the in store price at checkout if you choose that option. Me: So I get penalized 20% for actually coming into the store to shop? Saving the company shipping and packaging costs? This book has free online shipping! Do you just not want people to come into your stores? Clerk: (shrugs) I don't know. That's just the way it is. Me: Ohhhhhkay. (Puts book back and walks out). Like what kind of effed up logic? The only reason I give this place even 2 stars in light of this ridiculous policy is because I do love bookstores and want to see them succeed. Oh and aside from this aloof clerk that helped me yesterday I've found everyone at this location to be nice and helpful. But creating two different price points--online and offline--is ridiculous. What is the incentive to come in and shop? If you just want to close your stores and go online then just do it. You're basically forcing your shoppers to do it anyway. Ugh. It's so frustrating when you watch a company you want to succeed shoot themselves in the foot. read more

Not sure when was the last time I read a book, but whenever I'm at B&N, I directly go to the cooking book section by the registers or on the second floor. The coffee shop is on the expensive side.... but I like how you can get a coffee, grab a book and read....heck, who needs to buy a book when you can come here couple times a week to read a book and finish it. As for the parking goes, it's mad house... if you are lucky enough, you can find a place, but typically you'll be driving around for few minutes before you can find one. If the line at the cash register is long, then head back to the DVD section, as that register typically do not have a long line.... read more

Hubby had a gift certificate that was ten years old. I took it and him to the local Barnes & Noble and asked at the information desk whether the gift certificate would be honored. Yes! There was a ballet group performing music from The Nutcracker that day. We caught the tail end of it. One of the little girls came over and handed us a leaflet, explaining that a percentage of our purchases would go toward their group. We certainly didn't mind helping them out. Off to the Sci-Fi section to pick out some Star Wars books. We found several that were not already in his collection. Yes, we can get them cheaper as used books on Amazon, but he happily picked out several and burned up his gift certificate, then some. read more

You want to love all bookstores but this location is probably the worse I've ever dealt with. My past three visits have solidified I will never shop this location again. Visit one, everyone working was rude. Blame it on covid is what I did. Signed up for the rewards and requested to preorder a book. Came in again to pick up book on release the older gentleman working looked for half a second then decided to just snap at me to grab one from behind me since my copy wasn't being held (?!?). About a week later I got a call my book (I already purchased is being held?) Today's visit - money in hand knowing exactly what books I want but cannot locate due to the insane youth organization system that is not alpha by title or author for some reason - same older gentleman avoided me upstairs so I'm like well I'll go to the cashier with no line, no guests at all and ask. She told me she is for checking out and to find someone else to help and turned around. Cool. Great. Wish I could cancel the year membership since this place is actually the worst ever. read more

It's a classic good old Barnes and Noble where you don't get anything out of this world in terms of special books or outstandingly knowledgeable customer service. That being said, I'm still a fan of this B&N in particular just because it's so big! There are two levels, plenty of books, and a good amount of room (and single seated couches and chairs) for you to cozy on down with a book and sit/read for a while. And if reading about the bi-level thing tired you out - don't worry there are escalators. There's a decent number of staff so finding help isn't too difficult. And they have a small coffee shop that sells Starbucks coffee and a few tables for you to sit and study at. Wifi is a little slow but hey, who needs the distraction of internet am I right? At the end of the day, more expensive than Amazon? Yes of course, but there's still a lot of charm in a good bookstore chain and I would be devastated if they closed down and I could no longer get a random book right when I wanted it. Barnes and Noble is Barnes and Noble. There's nothing particularly different about this location than any of the other Barnes and Noble's I've wandered into over the years. This store is brightly lit and sterile, the cafe has more of cafeteria feel than a cozy cafe. If you're on this side of town I'd recommend heading to the Borders in Arborland Mall, it's got a better vibe. I did have a particularly bad experience at this Barnes & Noble cafe so I would not recommend frequenting it, especially for students. The scene was Holiday Season, Barnes and Noble was bustling. A group of 6 students from my class to discuss a group project. Most of us purchased coffees and we all piled around two small tables to chat about our project. After about an hour an employee approached us and asked us to leave! She stated that unless we were going to buy something else we needed to open the table for other customers; "there's a table upstairs for students" she stated. Huh?! I looked around, yes the cafe was busy but we were six customers taking up 2 small tables. Just next to us was a lone man in his 50's sitting on a laptop taking up one large table, who had been there as long as we had. This obviously was a poor management decision - by kicking us out she may have opened up two small tables but she pissed off six customers. She could have kicked out the lone man and opened up one big table and only pissed off one person. OR, she could have not kicked out anybody because I don't recall a table-occupying-time-limit being stamped on my receipt. BOTTOM LINE: Poor customer service at this location; you're better off heading up the street to Borders. read more

I've been to Barnes and Noble quite a few times lately after receiving a few gift cards over the holiday. This location is huge, and I've always found their staff polite and helpful. As much as I'd love to spend tons of time and money in a bookstore and have a huge library stuff with my favorites, I've always found it more economical to purchase books online, be it ebook or print. But! I think book stores are important. Nothing really beats the smell of books and coffee when you walk through those doors. And the deals you find sometimes? Worth it. Got a new interest? B&N staff can point you in the right direction. I find myself here often, even without gift cards, but then I find myself using their super convenient free wifi to check the price on Amazon. Unless it's on sale, it's usually cheaper online. I don't buy much here. But armed with my gift cards, I found myself buying a lot! I don't buy as many books when I'm shopping online. I found sales here that made it worth it. I had a friend with me that had a B&N loyalty card (not free) and got an extra 10% off. I forgot to use my gift cards, so I'll be back. And I'm excited because I love books. About their loyalty program. It's $25 a year for 10% off everything, including the coffee at their in-building Starbucks. They also send coupons via email for "over $50 in additional savings." I haven't invested in a card yet because I don't think I shop here enough (books are expensive, guys), but it's a great deal if you have one. Honestly, this place is great. It's a bit pricey because books are pricey, but I love it here. read more

I should start this review with an important note: I worked for this corporation for over 4 years, with over half spent at this specific location. I believe this makes me an expert on this particular store, but I understand if this review can't be taken seriously because of it. So anyway, I find myself visiting this bookstore often now that I take my child for long walks during the week. They are very baby friendly and close to my house, which makes it an ideal place to wander with a baby carriage. As far as the actual shopping, I do have my issues. At one point, Barnes & Noble had a significantly larger selection of every kind of book. You name the section, and it was much better at one point. I have seen the grim future of the corporate bookstore, and between this location and the two Borders in town, I can't help but see a depressing lack of selection creeping in. I do, however, think they have a superior BluRay selection to just about any store outside of the Arborland Borders, with a very large selection of movies that aren't exactly the cheapest, but aren't as horrible as they could be. The gift section seems unaffected by the changes over the last few years, as does the coffee shop and magazine aisles. The member program here isn't a bad deal if you're a book lover, since you can get 10% off even the most drastic sales price. You can get new hardcovers for almost half off when you combine the sales price with the membership discount, plus you get coupons in the mail all the time that you can apply to almost any item. To balance out that rather embarrassing bit of shilling, I should note that the actual book selection here can be really bad at times. Sometimes they're very good at stocking new titles, but at other times I'm literally embarrassed that they aren't stocking a really popular book, or even a legendary classic. Look, there are better bookstores in town. There's even a better corporate bookstore in town (the Arborland Borders). But between the familiarity I feel here, the great membership program, and the proximity to my house, I'll keep shopping here until they totally get rid of books altogether. read more

Meh-thinks this is a necessary evil these days. I like smaller bookstores--like Literati downtown!--but sometimes one needs things they just don't have. And sometimes one doesn't have the requisite two-days to wait for Amazon Prime, either. So, in the days of post-Borders-era, B & N is begrudgingly the place to go. And so I went. Good selection of Moleskine note books, and yet they were still missing the one I wanted! For shame! If only they'd had a medieum-sized, quad-lined, reporter-style notepad and I'd have been a happier camper. But, you'll be relieved to know that I made do with the offerings. Still quite good. The tables on the second level near the front of the store are a great place to study, with the caveat that it is often unpleasantly crowded. Have a Plan B... though usually there is at least one table open in the coffee shop downstairs. I like coming here for fun every now and then. It's a very spacious store with free wifi, and the employees don't bug you if you just want to sit around perusing books. I'm mostly concerned with the language section of bookstores whenever I go, and this particular location has a decent selection of languages and books. There are also always a lot of marked down books if you're looking for a bargain. read more

Usually when I feel "three stars" about something (you don't regularly have star-rated feelings?) I have a hard time being motivated to write a review. But in this case, I said I would because of my sheer dislike (ok, 2 stars dislike) of the Borders in Ann Arbor near central campus. So, compared to that place, this has a much better selection (the same selection as any B&N I'd guess) and atmosphere. If you need a place to hang out and browse for a while, or want to know which overpriced hardcover 'best-sellers' are coming out, this is a decent pick. But keep in mind that smaller "mom-n-pop" bookstores need your business way more, and are much better for browsing, if not for their online catalogs or in-stock guarantees. I could spend hours in the Dawn Treader bookstore. I could do that here too, but I'd probably be getting buzzed on caffeine in the cafe for most of it. read more

The only way its worth going to B&N is if you paid $25 to be in their club and buy a lot of books. I went there forgetting that, oh yeah I have to part of their super select club to not pay an arm and a leg for some piece of fiction that cost more than... well I felt it should. I remember thinking, "I should've gone to Border's" as I handed her my card. I felt she was a little smug about my answer of not being part of their Super Great Club, on top of the fact she didn't even offer me to join it. I mean, wasn't it enough that I had to meekly admit that I didn't have a card to tell you how awesome I was? You could have at least made me feel a little better by offering me to join your club! I would've said no anyways. Hmph. My sister used to have a card that I would use for the B&N which worked fine. She moved out of state... and there went my card. On top of the fact I can't remember her number since she's speed dial #5. Why memorize a number when I just have to push a button?! Other than the prices and not being part of the cool club it's kind of hard to find someone to help you find a selection. They're either not enough on the floor or I see them chatting with another worker and ignoring the imploring stares I give them from the aisle. Eventually I just have to interrupt and ask for help. I haven't eaten at their café; I tend to avoid getting anything from bookstore café's as they usually aren't anything to write home about. In the end, I didn't enjoy this B&N in Arborland compared to some of the ones I went to back in the days with my sis. read more

Another reviewer said it better than me - I hate giving any bookstore a bad review at this point. I love them, and I love Barnes and Noble in particular. This one is just decent, however. The store is clean, well-stocked and has a cafe, which is nice. They don't have a ton of seating which is a small downside. The biggest downside is the staff. The cafe staff is always really rude. The customer service desk is hit or miss - sometimes when I go to ask a question, they just grunt and point. The check out counter staff is usually nice but extremely slow. The prices are also a little out of control. I usually get audiobooks on Audible for $10-$15. I went to look at a Malcolm Gladwell audiobook and it was $48. Yikes. Management needs to take a second look at its customer service and pricing, but if that doesn't bother you than I would give this store a shot. read more

The bathroom issue in the pictures are fixed so I'm upping my star rating to 4. However, there is a serious issue in the cafe concerning seating. It is often the case that there is no place to sit on weekends and this is due in part to some of the customers using the space in a way that I don't believe is intended. For example--a business person who is often here on Saturdays meeting with clients who 'saves' several chairs for 1/2 hour or more at a time, even if there are no seats available for regular customers. There are also students who buy their drinks elsewhere, or don't buy any drinks or food at all, and choose to sit here for hours at a time. Result--not enough seats! I think the management needs to take a more active role or maybe just make the space bigger. We do go here a lot because my son likes the trip chunk cookies. read more

Barnes & Noble suffered a likely malware attack on October 7, 2020. The firm has lacked transparency, credibility and urgency in letting consumers know the risks and service problems that they were (and still are) experiencing as a result of this attack. B&N actually had the audacity to announce that all services are restored on On October 16th. This is an outright lie -- as Nook devices and items already purchased for Nook devices -- are still messed up. Local store staff answer the phone, and try to help -- but they have no capacity to escalate complaints, and -- in fact -- don't even have corporate contact information. Phone customer service folks are hard to access and clueless. Corporate office phone #s an directories do not work. And access to B&N support online chat and e-mail also not working or available. YOU CAN'T KEEP CUSTOMERS THIS WAY. read more

I completely understand there is a pandemic and things must be ordered curbside but I ordered 2 books for my mom for Mother's Day at the Ann Arbor location but my confirmation email stated they were at the Troy location. Once I made it to the Troy location and called for my things to come out I was told that they were in fact at the Ann Arbor location. I drove an additional 50 minutes for my items making it there by 4:05 only to find a man loading a fridge into the back of a woman's truck then rushing back inside before telling me they were closed. Someone at either location should've told me the new hours during the pandemic or made sure online hours were updated! I'm very furious with the brand as a whole now part of my moms gift is missing because they also never stated they would be closed Sunday! read more

I just can't stand any store that punishes you for buying from their physical stores vs. website the way B&N does. It's like they are actively trying to kill off their brick and mortar stores. I went to this Barnes & Noble location buy a computer programming book. It was $35 at bn.com and $60 in-store. I was told B&N has a policy to not honor online prices in their physical stores. So I went online and bought it....from Amazon for $29. I see no reason to ever go back to a B&N again. read more

I have DEFINITELY experienced better Barnes and Noble stores. For sure. I hate giving any bookstore a bad rating. I love B&N, used to go to it all the time with my mom when my hometown in Maryland got one. I remember it was a huge deal. I loved sitting in the comfy chairs, starting a book, drinking a latte and inevitably purchasing said book on my way out the store. I love the big huge book wall art. Ann Arbor's B&N has all the ingredients necessary to be awesome-- a great location, a two-story store, a local monopoly on chain bookstores since Ann Arbor's beloved Borders went defunct! BUT... it's not. There's not enough seating ever, the layout is wonky, the store is a little dirty and it always seems understaffed to me. I haven't had the best experiences with the cafe staff. Ordering takes forever. I once ordered a cookie two hours before the store was closing and they were like 'we just sold our last cookie and we can't make more because it will take an hour to turn the oven on and an hour to cook the cookie.' I didn't say anything, but I thought 'TWO HOURS to cook a cookie, that's a joke.' But of course I love books too much to stay away. The absolute worst thing about this barnes and noble, the thing that makes me gag when I think of it, is the horrible, disgusting condition of the bathrooms. Every time I attempt to use the loo here, they have always been dirty and stinky and just so gross. The stalls don't even close properly.
