I came by Barnes & Noble on my birthday earlier in January to essentially buy myself a bday present. I love books but especially during tough times as it helps me escape whatever I am going thru. I also will not be going out much, as my mother would be starting chemo in a few days. Due to covid still being a thing, I cannot risk going out and getting anything and transmitting it to my mom as her immune system will be nonexistent during chemo. I have a large stack of books ready to help me thru this time, and I wanted to add one more: Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World, the first book in his Wheel of Time series. I watched the first season of Wheel of Time on Amazon, and I wanted to read the full story. So i came into this Barnes & Noble, for the first time. Ive been to many, mostly the one in Coral Gables and the one in Florida International University when I lived down in Miami. In comparison to both of them, this one is way smaller. I also checked out their movie/video area just to see if there was anything I wanted... it was sparse Still it had what I needed, and a quick trip to the check out line had me out with the book I wanted.

Every time I visit The Next Page Bookstore and More in the heart of Decatur, Indiana, I am…read moreoverwhelmed anew with the volume of books that are housed in their classic, brick building. Have you ever noticed that there are some places that just make you feel welcome and comfortable and intrigued, when you walk in their door? That's Next Page! Not only is their selection immense, but their prices are most affordable. When you visit, be sure to check-out the second floor, which is accessible from their wonderful children's book department. Kids of any age will enjoy watching the vintage train, which is on a track suspended from the ceiling. If you get the munchies while shopping, My Sister's is a casual dining spot in the front of the Next Page Bookstore building. My Sister's is open 10:30-4:00 M-F and 10:30-3 on Saturday. If you feel like a specialty coffee, Decatur's popular Java Bean is a short 1/2 block away. While you are in town, explore the multitude of treasures at The Grainery, which is only 1 1/2 blocks away. Park for free in downtown and discover Decatur's many charming shops, all within an easy walk. You will have fun.

All proceeds benefit the Dekalb County Humane Society. Right there that's worth 5 stars for me, but…read morewait, there's more. Tails is located in a convenient spot downtown with good parking spaces all around it. It's easy to pop inside take a peek (or stay for an hour) and go shop at another store, like the Paper Gourmet about 20 feet away. Tails is open Monday-Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 10am-2:00pm. Real hours! Not bad for an all-volunteer business. They have a fairly wide selection (which means for any book lover it's hard to leave empty-handed). Lots of Scholastic books for kids. Some military history. Recent NY Times bestsellers, too. Many of the books are in new condition and so you can even do your Christmas shopping here. Some books definitely are not pristine, but that's okay. There are suggested donation prices posted (that even Amazon can't beat) and if you're feeling generous tell them to "keep the change" and know that the dogs and cats will really appreciate your generosity. If you're a bibliophile looking for a fun, friendly volunteer opportunity, this is it. Apply within. Do you have books you no longer want? Hard for some of us to believe, but if you need to re-home some of your literary friends then please consider donating them to Tails. I had been donating mine to the library, but now most of them go to Tails (sorry EPL). They will take books as well as magazines. Drop them off and enjoy the good feeling you get from sharing them with others. It does have one downside, for me. Given the recent renovation inside the building, the place off-gases like crazy. I'm hopeful that as time goes on it will resolve itself, but please use no VOC-paint and finish next time guys (who I realize are not affiliated with Tails, so let's not take it out on them). Overall, it's a cozy book nook that you can peacefully enjoy and even make new friends. The volunteers that I've met have all been sweet, kind, and very helpful. Auburn is blessed to have this spot open up. Oh, if only it stays here!!
