There's a big sign on the Barnes & Noble window saying "High speed wifi, just log on." I took my laptop to the cafe and logged, but the internet wasn't working. The staff said that when it's busy, often it just doen't work -- there were three people with computers in the cafe. I wanted to review the Starbucks cafe, not the B&N shop, but there doesn't seem to be a separate entry for it. This is a comment on crappy Starbucks and their false advertising and lack of interest in/care for customers, rather than B&N itself. read more

It's so funny how so many people are complaining how filthy their bathroom is. Down the street the starbucks on Joralemon/ courtstreet won't even let you borrow their bathroom without purchase. I love this B&N, it's never too busy and I always find something new and intriguing. If I need to purchase a greeting card I always come check out their selections first. read more

There is a great cafe on the second floor with the best Lattes as well as delicious pastries and cakes from the cheese cake factory .There is a complete book collection for all ages and a few areas that have interesting gifts that anyone would enjoy at fair prices and with customer service.The membership is a bargain at $25. and gives a discount on most items including sale and cafe items and also comes with coupons that are mailed and emailed for deeper discounts along with the membership discount.The membership is a no brainer.Always like coming here. read more

I typically shy away from new books and prefer to buy used from local, independent stores. (Could I sound any more like a hipster?) However, I was in need of some specific books which would have been nearly impossible to find in a smaller, used book store. I visited this establishment at 9am and there was already a line of people waiting outside! However, I was in and out and on my way to work in less than five minutes. They had exactly what I needed and even though I didn't need help finding what I was looking for, the resources were there, including an information desk. Clean, well-organized and great for what it is. I prefer used books because of their decent prices. (I won't pretend it's an environmental thing, for me!) However, it would have cost the same for me to have a used book shipped to me from a seller on the internet. Thanks for the books! read more

Convenient to mass transit. Helpful staff. I wish the cafe was a bit larger to accommodate more customers, especially after 5 p.m. on weekdays. I love the option of skimming or even reading books while seated on the carpeted floors. It's a nice quiet space where you can spend an entire day, writing or reading. I'm always so tempted to buy a ton of journals and other notebooks, but I somehow manage to resist the urge...at least for now. Plenty of cashiers to help expedite the line, which can come in handy as well. read more

Bought a couple of books here. One book in particular is a Baseball book for all ball players and future ball players out there called, The Science of Hitting : By Ted Williams. I recommend this book to any ball player who really wants to learn about hitting. Teddy ball game was a genius. Barnes and Noble is spacious, any book I looked for was always in stock. read more

Good place to buy a book or just browse. It can be very crowded not to mention the people sitting in the isles while you are walking around. It's not pleasant trying to avoid stepping on people. Some people mistake this place for the library. The coffee shop is a good idea, it needs more seating. The cashiers are average they only talk to you when they want to sell you that membership card, which in my opinion is completely worthless. I like the fact that if a book is not in the store they will order it for you and you can pick it up. I enjoy downloading books at rapid speed to my nook using there wi -fi. It's a decent place and good for the community. read more

So if this could be zero stars it would be. I don't usually frequent BN so I had no general opinion on their customer service but after tonight I'll never "darken" their door again. I tried to return 10 books here for my company that I had purchased in a different store and was treated like a thief or scammer. I had original receipt, my business credit card and even my ID but was flatly refused by two mgrs. b/c I was deemed suspicious. First mgr took my receipt and disappeared for close to 10mins. He then tried to say he couldn't take books back b/c it was after 14-days, mind you the associate had just told me they had extended returns for the holidays. He had no reply when I whipped out that fact. Then he tried to say transaction was suspicious b/c books bought in NJ. I was like, what?!!!? It's not like NJ is Siberia, there is travel between NYC and NJ. Thousands of people even do it everyday. Twice! I asked him if he could prove the purchase or the card fraudulent he had no response. When I took out business Amex to show him that it was the original purchase card, his surprise that this black chick in street wear actually worked somewhere that trusted her with a business Amex IN HER NAME was palpable. No lie, he asked me what the company name printed on the card was and I promptly offered to bring up our website on my phone where I am listed in staff section. He had no reply. He trotted off for reinforcements. A 2nd and new mgr came back w/o the 1st and said BN policy said he couldn't take that many books back that were purchased at another store. To which I replied isn't BN the same across America. Having run out of patience for this and time i offered to return 5 books only, since at that point lugging all 10 books home on subway was not going to be the highlight of my night. I was told in no uncertain terms to take them back to NJ. Btw, when I asked to see written BN policy for returns that allowed him to do this, all he could say was "it's our right to refuse any return." Needless to say BN will never see my/our business again. Pity for them because we buy a lot of books each year. This batch was originally over 50. read more

It's a pretty large Barnes n noble with a Starbucks in it. Nothing to special compared to other ones just the location is easy for me to get to but sometimes ain't worth it cause of the crowd. The staff are all friendly so that gets them to 4 stars with me. read more

I don't know if I stepped into Barnes and Nobles or the Public Library. First, you can't get through the aisles because there are people sitting in them with their legs spread out. Then if you ask them to move so that you can see the books, they look at you as if you did something wrong. Every book I was interested in buying was in terrible condition due to being read in the store by people who had no intentions of buying anything. The children section is impossible to walk through with all the babysitters and strollers. I felt bad for the people who worked there because they all looked beat down and tired. I will not go back to this store. read more

I'm pissed...I usually give good reviews but not here. They cancelled 5 items I was sending as a birthday gift. No explanation (guess no longer in stock) I ordered them online and it was all going to one address and each day then sent me an email saying this item has been canceled. So I need another gift and I go to the store about 12 miles away. I buy a few things and the gift. I get home and find they charged me over $10.00 more I called customer service. They said it' cheaper online. OK...I get it, they don't have to pay rent....but I'm still pissed that ALL the items were canceled and I had to pay so much more for the gift I bought. My experience here was horrible. I brought about 10 funko pops w gift cards i received. One box had damage the lady manager refused to discount it. Then she started asking me a thousand questions about where i received my gift cards which was none of her business. Wish i knew her name but she has blonde hair. I just felt very uncomfortable and profiled because im a tall black male. After i purchase my items i went to customer service to see if they had an item which came out today. She proceeded to follow me around as if i was some kind of thief. I left the store and continued my day but ifelt as if i needed to post this because i always go to that barnes and nobles and never encountered any type of behavior from a manager in that way. Typical B&N, nothing bad about it per se, but don't come hoping to get work done, as I did - the cafe area has a 20-minute max seating policy. It's fine for what it is, but if you need someplace to be for a longer time, there are better options not too far (I like Hanco's). read more

I am really pleased that many are leaving great feedback for the Barnes and Noble location in Brooklyn Heights. What people have mentioned in previous reviews is very true: Huge selection, very busy store, lack of seating, and the like. On the other hand, my low rating is from an experience I had with one of their associates. I typically am able to undo the shrink wrap from some of the larger books to preview before I purchase. (I have a B&N membership, so there is practicality in purchasing in the store.) However, an associate (middle-aged caucasian guy) without a name tag approached me as I was holding a book. It was in its shrink wrapper and he was adamant about the book not being able to be previewed because there were no display copies to be viewed. He offered me no alternatives in terms of customer service or other ways that we can go about previewing the copy. He disdainfully took the book away from me supposedly offering to shelf it back. (I totally understand that some titles cannot be previewed as the title is the only unique copy in the store. I also respect that art books should be rendered in mint condition to the buyer.) This associate brushed me off, in regards to the way I dressed as I was in a sweat shirt and jeans and primarily because of my ethnicity. To add insult to injury, I called the store after having left for 10 minutes. I spoke to a manager about this associate, and I never got an apology. (I suspect the male manager Dave whom I spoke to on the phone was the associate in question.) I respect that the store needs to protect its property and the like, however, I don't appreciate being treated the way I was. With that said, I (1) urge you to preview the books in this store (2) Go down the street (3) Support the fine independent bookstore called Book Court a few blocks down. (They don't racially discriminate and are very helpful with customers. I'm sure if they would refuse to remove the shrink wrap from one of their books, they would at least do it respectfully). (4) If Book Court is not an option, then go Online and purchase on Amazon after you previewed your titles. From this experience, I have decided not to renew my B&N membership and just use this store as a way to preview expensive book purchases before I make them. Otherwise, avoid this store if all possible. read more

This location is among the smaller stores, but they manage to lay out the two floors well enough to find what you're looking for with relative ease. The smaller size can be a plus if you're looking to find something quickly and make a purchase. I enjoy the magazine section the most. There are two adjacent racks of magazines on all subjects and it is easy to jump from as diverse subjects as fashion to science by just making an about-face. More places to sit and a more visible sales staff would improve the overall experience. During my most recent visit, a NYPD officer was observing the 2nd floor. The presence of the armed officer soured my visit, especially since the officer appeared suddenly and stood a yard or two away from me while I browsed the children's books section. It was difficult to not feel like I was being watched with suspicion or being "warned." I also found it odd that a fully uniformed and armed police officer in the children's books section was necessary for loss prevention or store safety. It seemed extreme. I did find a manager to share that I found it very uncomfortable and was on the fence about purchasing the book I came for after the experience. She listened and shared that NYPD was there on their behalf. She emphasized several times that the officer may be new to the store and that they typically get tired and will find a place to sit and observe. I found this explanation less than satisfactory, though I will say she was pleasant and did listen to my concerns. I would encourage anyone else who has shared this kind of discomfort to voice it to management. I can't imagine I was the only one who experienced this. The book store should be a place to relax and enjoy books. read more

On Friday Dec 27, 2013 (time a little after 7pm) I decided to take my kids to this Barnes & Noble location after a movie. My daughters ages 6 and 16 both picked out one book. I had to go to the ladies room so we went upstairs to the second floor. We were 8 feet away from the restrooms right by the childrens books. I handed all the books to my daughter and ask her to hold them until I come out of the bathroom. She was right in the childrens book area. I look up and see this really strange security guard standing there and watching us (inches away). We were just shopping! He didn't say anything to us. There was nothing to say because we weren't doing anything wrong. I felt personally offended. This security guard should be retrained or fired. After that we proceded to the register with the books. Then we left the store. I had to write this review because this security guard made me feel really uncomfortable. My daughters also noticed this strange security guard. What an experience! Customers should not be treated this way. I will not be shopping at this location. It will eventually go out of business because most books are sold online these days. Many people who go into these stores don't spend a red cent. If the cooperate office is reading this review I'd like you to know that good customers who actually buy books at your store are your most valuable commodity. So make sure your security guards know how to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Otherwise I'm sure they'll many lawsuits. read more
