Years ago I took in a very nice high quality Stetson hat for repair. It needed the inner headband replaced. When I picked up the hat I was extremely surprised to see that they had taken out the Stetson crown liner, with the beautiful logo, and replaced it with their "Baron hat" liner. They weren't supposed to replace the liner. Just the inside sweatband. it was just a "promotional branding" exercise on their part. I was a little stunned by it actually. I paid and left the store and I regretted I didn't say anything more ever since then. Be aware of this if you take a fine hat in for repair. read more

Mark Mejia is excellent at what he does and is a genuinely nice person. I'm happy to have met him today. I couldn't get my dad's old Stetson working the way I wanted, but Mark is a true artisan who was not happy until I was. He cut down the brim and put just the right pencil roll on the edge to match both a photo I showed him and the way I had it pictured in my head. Someone who does such high profile work could have easily "big timed" me and my little modification job. Mark made me feel like my hat and my continued business are important. I picked up two hats from Baron's Hats yesterday. I can't say they were as good as new because they were better than when I bought them. I complained about one of the hats because it was my "foul weather" hat and had been through ma y a storm since 1973 when I bought it in Oklahoma while working on a film. Now it's too good to abuse. I went to this hipster joint in Hollywood only to find out that the owner is the one that fits the hats and he isn't there everyday. I quickly Yelp'd another business and found this one that is close to my work. I needed a wool fisherman type cap stretched and they did it quickly and affordably. When I picked it up, I asked if it was possible to stretch it a little more--Mark happened to be there and said absolutely. I waited 5 minutes while he worked on it and voila! it was done. I took my hat in for a cleaning... a month ago. Communication with these guys has been awful, and when I call I either speak with someone who seems clueless about what's going on, or leave a message that is never returned. I'll have to do some research on hat cleaners in LA, because surely these guys aren't the only ones. And if they are, well, there's always the internet. One other thing. For a shop known for custom-made hats, their store is surprisingly thin on stock. One might call it... a barren hat shop. UPDATE 04/12/10: I finally decided to just go there and pick up my hat. It was clear they were never going to call me or anything. When I got there, my hat was noticeably lighter (as in, brighter) than it had been. The main stain I'd hoped to get out was indeed gone but several of the smaller ones were still there. There was a copious amount of glue still on the hat just above the brim from where they'd reglued on the band. And the hat itself was several sizes too small now. The owner, Mark, felt terrible. And told me there was no charge. Maybe it was because he did get the big stain out, or because he seemed genuinely sorry, but I did pay him a little bit. And he stretched the hat for me at no charge. It's still too small, and I will probably take it and have him stretch it more. Fact remains, they had the hat for a month, never called me to say if it was ready. When I did go to just get it, I found it faded from having been cleaned, too small, and covered in dried glue. I wouldn't take another hat to this place. And I definitely wouldn't recommend them. read more

Okay, so it really deserves four stars for having far too few women's hats, but it's a shop devoted to an art so fabulous and yet dwindling, that I could not bear but give it five. The most charming aspect of this place is that you hear and see the milliners making hats right there in the shop. You see them working the wool felt, leather, straw, feathers, and ribbon that come together to create hats that are truly works of art. They focus mostly on custom work and props for the film industry, like much of Burbank's more esoteric businesses (such as Sword and Stone for all of you looking for that ever necessary mace or shield...), but there was no problem when I came in just to poke around. They have pre-made hats to try on and buy for around $85, as well as pieces they have made for films like the Indiana Jones trilogy, The Mask and Big Trouble in Little China and reproductions of famous chapeaus like Lincoln's stovepipe. The best part of this shop is seeing how the beautiful toppers allow a personality to shine. I was there with a boy who put on a wool Panama hat that was begging to come home with him and make his life a little fancier while showcasing his lovely face. This is why it was such a bummer that there was not much for me to play around with. Though I suppose not many girls these days are in the market for wool cloches and pillbox hats, some of us still have a flair for the dramatic that needs an old school touch. But I suppose that's why they offer custom work. And one day I will take them up on that offer. read more

So I should start by saying that I absolutely love the hat I bought from these guys. It's comfortable, sturdy, and looks awesome. It was expensive as hell, but worth it. It's their replica of the hat Daniel Day-Lewis wore in the film Gangs of New York. Great hat. However, in the time it took me to get the hat, I could have taken up an apprenticeship at a millinery, studied the art of hatmaking, mastered it, bred several generations of rabbits till they attained the perfect color, shaved said rabbits for their fur, crushed said fur into velvet, used said velvet to make about fifty hats, and experimented with top hats till I made the perfect one. It took a whole YEAR before I had my hat- most people would have given up, but I really wanted that hat. You see I decided to treat myself for my birthday a while back, so I placed an order with these guys for the aforementioned hat. Four months passed. I didn't have the hat; so I called them to inquire about it. They said they were working on it. Two months later, I called again. Another two months passed, and the hat finally arrived- with a HUGE dent in the side of it. Bummed, I promptly mailed it back to get it fixed. Two months (and several dozen phone calls) later, the fixed hat arrived! It looked great- but upon putting it on, the liner immediately popped out. It had been HOT GLUED in- in a hat that cost close to a thousand dollars, that was unnacceptable. I sent it back. You can guess what happened next. By the time the hat FINALLY arrived, it had been almost exactly a year. I recieved my birthday gift to myself- just in time for my NEXT birthday. So do I recommend Baron Hats? Yes, if you're an immortal, who can plan his or her wardrobe years in advance, and who doesn't mind wading through hip-deep BS repeatedly to get a product. After all, their hats ARE good. read more

My girlfriend has loved her grandfather's fedora since she inherited it years ago. But ... it needed some love: it was dirty, had sweat stains, and the shape was getting distorted. Enter Baron Hats, who for $45 did a total refresh on it - cleaned it and reblocked it (even though it had been machine pressed, not blocked, when first made), and now it looks amazing again. But the best part of the story is picking the hat up. I live about an hour away from the store, and happened to be swinging by their area on a holiday. Their Twitter feed said they'd be closed, but I called them on a whim, and it turns out one of their staff was there. He was super nice, and said "Sure, come on by; I'll be here!" So, not only do they do great hat work, but they bend over backward to help you get your hat when it's most convenient for you. read more

A couple of months ago, I needed to get my black wool fedora cleaned and shaped - the brim had lost some of its shape. I was somewhat apprehensive after reading the review of Daniel L., but since it was over a year ago, I decided to give it a go. I was helped by the owner and a lovely saleswoman there, whose name I forgot, but I do remember she is Belgian. When I came back for my hat, it was perfect. I also bought one of the cardboard hat boxes and they prepared the box for my hat. I told the owner I was very satisfied with the result. He seemed very relieved and told me that he always attempts to do his best. I got the feeling that he was still smarting from the one-star review by Daniel L. I can only speak of my experience there - it was a good one. I intend to go back for future hat cleaning/touch ups. read more

As a Costume Designer, In the Motion Picture Business, I need to really count on my contacts. The business of making films, travels at a fast a furious pace... and Vendors and contacts in the motion picture business know this.... and the exceptional ones, to the trade, move swiftly and quickly to gain and assure us all, that we will get top notch service and quality. unfortunately, I did not get this top quality service for one of my VIP clients at Baron Hats. I had brought in a fedora hat, to Baron Hats, to be blocked, and well cared for. My client had always kept his hat in it's original box after use. I brought his hat to Baron Hats, in the original box and explained exactly what I needed them to do. Please handle with the utmost of care. The hat I got back after blocking was not the same hat I had brought in! The hat was literally destroyed! The Interior writing on the lining and all of the Hats DNA, Including, Size, Color, Year it was made, Style Name, was gone!. The Fedora was placed back damp, back in the original box. At that very moment, I could slowly feel the blood just leaving my body... As I looked at the exterior of the hat, I now noticed the exterior ribbon around the hat was damp, fraying and spotted with water marks... As a Costume Designer, and a IATSE, union member I take a deep pride in my work, I have done over 50 films as a Costume Designer, and considered Baron Hats to be a reputable trade house, that my peers and fellow Costume Houses use and trust. I was shocked and horrified at the work they had performed for one of my VIP clients... I was the one that would have to go back and explain, the poor work done. I told Baron Hats, that I was very unhappy with the work they performed. I left a message for Mark, the owner telling him, "What Happened."!!!!!! "This is not the same hat,"I brought In" "It Looks terrible." I, was assured by Mark Mejia, he would get to the bottom of it, and find out what worker had worked on the hat and speak to them accordingly. Mark Mejia, also assured me he would take care of my client and refund his money back and make it right! Again, another promise was broken, I ended up having to take, Baron Hats to court, on behalf of my client. I, won my case. I had to send the sheriffs division of the county court house, to Baron Hats, to collect the money for my client. It took several months. My client was awarded all his money back!!!! I kept up my due diligence for him and made it right. I was the one who, had recommended Baron Hats and I had to make it right in the end for my client and did.. I was a bit hesitant to come here because of the poor review I read. I have a 25 year old straw boater that I had worn a few times. But, I wanted the navy/red striped ribbon replaced with something which doesn't resemble a hat worn by a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor waiter. Also, I suppose my head has gotten bigger in those 25 years so I needed the inner hat band loosened up a bit. They told me they could do both. It was relatively inexpensive ($40 total) and would be done in 5 days. Wow, fast and cheap. I was very pleased with the job they did. I've just got home from picking up my two hats I had in for repairs. I received them from my mother a couple of months ago; she'd kept them for forty years of so after my grandfather passed away. They are not expensive hats but are treasures to me and Baron Hats treated them as though they were family heirlooms of their own. Recently I traveled to launch some sideshow themed installation art and on my way to the airport I took a chance and stopped by Baron's to see if there was anything I could purchase to complete my look for the show. I've been going to this shop for around 3 years. I found it on Google, when I needed a new band for my 1915 Bowler/Derby hat. I'm not in the movie business or an elite like some people here claim that Baron's Hats caters too. But I love going there to get my 1920's hats clean, and they are always kind. I'm waiting for them to finish up my 3 hats, but they are always fast in responding, and always smile when you go in. I love the way the Burbank shop looked like.
