Verdant Valley
Any trip to the Barossa Valley should include a compulsory excursion to the Barossa Farmers Market as it showcases all that is truly wonderful about the region and the passion and home grown pride the Barossans have for their unique produce and valley. It's not all about the wine (although that is also very very important)! Expect to buy absolutely fresh, seasonal veg and fruit and particularly the type of heirloom produce that used to grace the photographs of Country Life magazine and now every gourmet proponent and trendy tome dedicated to healthy clean cooking and living.
Make an effort and get there very early (or better still have a long weekend and stay over on Friday night) to mix with the locals (you may even spot the Valley's most famous face and well known advocate) buying and selling their wares. There's plenty to try before you buy and much more to tempt you. From ready cooked meals like curries and salads to hand made chocolate, home preserves, country raised and killed meat and poultry, mettwurst and German influenced smallgoods, honey, fresh and smoked fish, artisan bread, coffee, tea, vin cotto, verjuice, craft beer, dried egg noodles, flowers, ice cream, home made pastries and cakes, fresh juices, olive oil, local dried fruit and fruit straps and the list goes on and on and on.....
Buy up big first - don't dilly dally - the market sells out quickly particularly bread, pastries etc - then head to the Breakfast bar for a Brekky burger or Baby burger made with locally baked rolls, free range eggs, free range bacon dolloped with your own choice of relishes. Finish off with fair trade coffee to go from local Barossa Valley Roasters or tea from Scullery Made or Ekoo or a fresh juice.
Gather up all your gorgeous Barossa foodie finds and head to your fave winery for a bottle to complement and then to the nearest vantage point (Mengler's Hill lookout) to take in dreamy views and enjoy one of the best picnics you'll ever have. At only 1 hour and 5 minutes from Adelaide why would we be anywhere else in the world! read more
