I would've loved to go to Noma while we were in Copenhagen, but with a picky husband and Sunday to Tuesday travel dates, we didn't even bother trying to make that work. Instead, I booked a table at Barr, the new casual eatery in the old Noma space. It was a good compromise. We got a taste of the Noma empire that Matt B. could enjoy, at a much lower price point, with almost no hassle. I should note that I did make the reservation almost two months in advance, and that there was limited availability even for a Monday night. Still, it was easy to do. The restaurant was attractive, a cozy, contemporary space decked out in light wood in different textures. There were large windows offering soothing waterfront views. We dined at 8:00 and enjoyed the sunlight and the late sunset. Service was excellent. Our server was welcoming and attentive and very helpful. He advised us on food and drink, and even consulted with the kitchen to accommodate Matt's dietary preferences: they let him get the four-course Barr menu with a major substitution at no additional cost. He was also great at explaining our beer pairings, and even hooked me up with an external battery charger for my dying phone. Barr may be laid back, but the service is top notch. We started our dinner with a round from the brief cocktail menu. I got the akvavit and tonic, a refreshing drink made with dill aquavit, finished with two ridiculously good sweet and sour gherkin halves. Matt's old fashioned was great, too, a nice mix of whiskey, mead, and beer. We drank beer with the rest of our meal, opting for two beer tastings to pair with the day's menu. There were two tiers of beer tastings available, as well as a wine tasting, and we decided to try one of each tier--"matching" and "extraordinary," priced at 275 DKK and 475 DKK apiece. (The matching wines were also 475 DKK, which isn't the worst for a wine pairing at a high-end restaurant, but we figured beer was the way to go here.) We ended up trying eight different beers, and I enjoyed all of them, individually and as a varied pairing experience. There were a lot of sours, which weren't really my thing until this trip, but Barr and Copenhagen might have made a convert out of me. The food was superb, beginning with a bowl of crusty sourdough and dense, country-style rye bread, served with old-fashioned churned butter and pork lard studded with onion. There was an a la carte menu, but the Barr menu was definitely the way to go, with four courses for 600 DKK--not cheap, but not unreasonable, especially in this town. It ended up being more flexible for us than the a la carte menu, where both of our entrées were only available in portions for two. The first course was the hot smoked herring, a beautiful, savory, tender piece of fish served with fennel, green strawberries, and elderflower. Everything about this was delicious, the fish going perfectly with the crunch of the fennel and the tart young strawberries. Next, we had thin, delicate slices of ribeye cured in black pepper, draped over a bright bed of green asparagus and parsley. The entrée of the day was white asparagus, but Matt was able to get ribs instead, which were much better for a man who eats vegetables in french fry or condiment form, and otherwise under duress. I was happy to try both, and am grateful to the Barr team for being so wonderfully hospitable. The white asparagus was an exceptional dish--four fat, toothsome stalks finished with black currant leaves, served with side plates of shrimp, ham, hollandaise, and some kind of lovely green sauce. I especially liked the tiny, salty shrimp, which went well with the hulking, mild asparagus. The ribs were also delectable, juicy and tender pork ribs sprinkled with pine, with juniper salt, asparagus tips, and green tomatoes over drained yogurt on the side. Dinner ended with a rhubarb dessert, a tangy crème fraîche parfait with vanilla and rhubarb and berries. This was excellent, a nice way to round out a hearty meal, light and not too sweet. We had a fantastic time at Barr and would recommend it to anyone looking for a special dinner in Copenhagen. It may not be Noma, but it's a destination restaurant in its own right. read more

Absolutely stunning experience from start to finish. We chose the tasting menu after seeing that it included just about everything we wanted to try -- adding one course to the beginning made it perfect. The wine pairings were an amazing experience; only once before have I ever tasted such incredible interplay between the wine and the food. We began with the brown butter waffles, rich and crispy, served with a layered salad of cucumber, preserved green strawberry, crème fraîche and brown crab. It was beautifully presented in a hollowed crab shell, which was interesting because we had never seen that variety before (it comes from Norway, according to the server.) The first official course of the tasting menu was a hot-smoked mackerel, accompanied by a fermented yeast paste and a tiny salad of tomato, hot pepper and grilled roses. Mackerel is one of my favorite fishes and hot-smoking it gave a tender finish to the meat. The hot pepper was excellent and the tomatoes nice, too, though not as perfectly ripe as you'd find in a warmer climate. I didn't get any flavor from the roses, but the texture was interesting. The wine was a sturdy white; we had tried it with the crab but (as our server warned us) it was a little overwhelming to the delicate crabmeat. Here it was perfect. Next came a beef tartare. I was a little nervous because I had never tried Western-style tartare before, though I love the Middle Eastern kibbeh nayeh with spices and onion. This one was beautifully presented, the red meat contrasting with dark green tarragon oil below and light green fava beans on top, each topped with a tiny pickled onion. In the middle was buried a delicious, salty crème fraîche with capers. The textures, flavors and colors were just amazing, and the wine (a dry Riesling) cut right through them to make each taste brand new. Our main course was perfectly cooked spatchcocked chicken served with buttery pan sauce, creamed leeks and a tangle of greens -- cress and some others I couldn't identify. I loved the strong flavor and al dente texture of the leeks, the crispy chicken skin, the peppery greens -- and the wine, a lush red Burgundy blend, was surprising in its sweetness next to all the savory elements, building a complex flavor structure with each successive bite. Dessert was no less superb, though beautifully simple: creamy custard, tart rhubarb sorbet and a corona of tiny hibiscus blossoms to add texture and color. The wine here was much sweeter than I would have thought I'd enjoy, but again, perfect with the food. The staff who served us throughout the night (just about everyone came by a time or two) were courteous, friendly and professional, and like the atmosphere inside, comfortably relaxed. The price was high (about 1100 kronor per person for the tasting menu and wine pairings, or $170) but completely worth it for such a special experience! We were celebrating 15 years of marriage that evening and I can't think of a better place to commemorate our anniversary. read more

I was a bit skeptical at first because I was thinking how can you make frikadeller and a wiener schnitzel gourmet...but I was wrong! Great restaurant, nice laid back atmosphere, friendly staff and very good comfort food. I would highly recommend this restaurant to people who want to try classic danish food with a twist in a beautiful space and who likes their interesting beer. I can highly recommend the waffle, tartare, frikadeller and apple dessert! And even though I am not a beer person, have them recommend some beers for you as well as some wine to go with the food. Amazing setting, excellent food, and friendly and attentive service, all at a reasonable price. Three of us shared the snack, three appetizers, and two mains and it was more than enough food. The menu is small and seasonal and feels nicely focused with pristine presentation and unique flavor combinations. Some of the richer dishes could benefit from just a touch more salt to finish; our massive bone marrow was perfectly cooked and accompanied by crushed Sichuan peppercorns and minced salted gooseberries but could have used a little sea salt to really offset the fat. Likewise, the glazed cod was mind-blowingly good, but a little salt would have balanced the sweet glaze and the rich whey-butter sauce. Would absolutely come back again next time I'm in Copenhagen. In no way intended to be a replacement for the World's former "#1 Restaurant," that space still under construction to the North, it was mere moments after the restaurant was announced via Social Media that an online Reservation was made for a snack between lunch at Stud!o and dinner at Kong Hans Kælder, the pre-booking largely unnecessary as the majority of Danes were largely unaware of Barr's opening, even though a day one review had already been penned by a local critic with a group of six Americans one table over apparently having booked a flight from Portland specifically to dine there. Rustic and low ceilinged, pictures of noma showing little to have changed except for the lighting and several Taps added to a room adjacent the central kitchen, it was with friendly smiles that guests were greeted by a team of hirsuit men sporting lots of ink, striped shirts and aprons, the menu familiar to both locals and foreigners thanks to its focus on homey recipes such as Schnitzel, Potatoes, Smoked Salmon and Cheese, each table quickly presented with a Drink list and Water, the housemade Juices unfortunately not ready to go so early on but the collection of Aquavit and international Beers quite impressive. Not a "New Nordic" Restaurant, though concepts of The Manifesto are followed in terms of locally souring everything possible while focusing on traditional plates from Scandinavia and the North Sea it was as the menu was perused that a basket with two styles of Bread and Spreads were presented, the Sourdough every bit as good as that at 108 and the Rye dark, tangy and full of Seeds with both enjoyable on their own but all the better with Salted Cow's Milk Butter or Onion and Leek studded Pork Fat. Far less blasé than 108, the waiters all wearing big smiles and engaging with guests in a way that made it almost seem rational that the Portlanders were already visiting for their third time, it was after some inquiry about the Bar Menu and two "Large Plates" that restraint was shown in ordering two appetizers and a main with an eye toward Dessert, the New Potatoes with Lovage and Goat's Butter almost Asian in its use of dried Fish to create extra umami while the Bone Marrow was cooked just long enough to caramelize the top and render the center near-liquid next to a sour Chutney of Parsley and Green Strawberries. Definitely a place that feels well suited to long Winters, the confines cozy and plates hearty with a nod to the sort of Food many traditionally enjoy next to a Lager or Stout, it was on the word of a visiting Austrian Chef stating "the Schnitzel is better than most back home" that dry-aged heritage Pork was served next, a crisp and light Batter gently clinging to Flesh that was rich and fork tender with briny Butter added at one edge and a Salad of Peas and Horseradish that thankfully allows one to choose how much, if any, of each they want. Moving onward to Dessert, the pastries at The Corner giving one hope for all three choices, it was after a bit of indecisiveness that the Ice Cream was set aside in favor of Cake and Waffle, the former served as a floppy round dusted in Cocoa atop a moist Cake soaked in booze and topped with Cream and Cherries while the 'Waffle' was a crisp disc perched atop Strawberry Ice Cream, sliced Berries and Flowers with a smooth emulsification of Yeast, Oil, Sugar and Cream to be added at its side. read more

We came here after seeing it on Somebody Phil, and after eating at Noma, we were excited about eating in their original location. The lighting and views inside the space is perfect in the summertime, and the staff was very friendly as well. Dinner was wonderful. We ate their casually, with windy hair and jeans, which they were fine with, but it would be a great place for a special occasion meal as well. We shared the "cucumber salad" which was basically a wedge salad with a couple cucumbers (the weakest part of the meal), as well as the glazed cod (perfection), which came with grilled onions (oh my god how could these be so good?!), and the hasselback potato (seriously, best potato!). We also truly enjoyed a couple rounds of the house made yogurt bread, rugbrød and butter. SO FREAKING GOOD. To be honest (don't judge us too harshly), we hate beer. So the hubby got their old fashioned, and I got their bay leaf martini. One of each was more than enough. Delicious and very strong. read more

If either your checkbook or your dining partner is less than excited abt heading to Denmark's famed Noma, shed no tears, as Barr, which takes up their previous space, is truly exceptional. Strolled in at 8:45p on a weeknight, the summer sun waning, the wooded space and modern open kitchen creating a homey environment in which you immediately feel at ease. If you're pondering a trip but are not convinced, do yourself a favor and don't Google translate the menu ahead of time, as to me, "banquet fresh pigs" and "healthy makrel" sound terrifying - just trust that whatever "taskekrabbe" and "torskehale" is will be delicious. You'll start with a bread course, the seeded rye hearty and delicious, the yoghurt bread tart and addictive - we then moved into the crudite with farmer's cheese - a veritable cornucopia - and if you think you've tasted fresh veg before, you're wrong until you've been here - spring in a bite. We also dabbled in the white asparagus soup, chamomile a nice touch, and a gem salad w crushed peas that was shockingly revelatory - the lettuce a far more complex bite than I bargained for. For mains, the couples did the chicken strudel for two, a behemoth of rich poultry blanketed in buttery crust - and I tapped the crab w savory waffles - perhaps not the pairing my American palate expected, but something abt the cool yogurt, sweet crab, and crisp waffle was just divine. This all may sound simple, yet it was all so thoughtful, so quietly refined that it was as though we'd never really eaten any of these things before tonight. In a shockingly uncharacteristic move, we skipped dessert as by this point it was 11p and food comas and fatigue had set in. I'm sure it changes w the week - for us it was a rhubarb thing, a cheese sampling, a mulberry choux pastry. The only mark off was for service, which started a bit slow, but eventually just became standard European. The chefs often come out to present dishes, which is sweet rather than stuffy. The restaurant is beautiful, with wonderful views of the pier and the water to enjoy along with a fantastic meal. This restaurant is a little out of the way but man is it worth it. With its open floor plan and kitchen you can see just how the food is being prepared. The menu is broken into 2 sections. A chefs prefixed dinner or a la carte items. I would highly recommend the ones shown in the pictures especially the cod. Every bite of this food was amazing and the cod was the softest and most delicate fish I've ever eaten. Expect to spend around 1,400 DKK or about $200 USD if you're going. So Sorry to rain on all the prositive reviews, but my meal was not particularly good. The lovely setting, the gorgeous food, the very attractive waitstaff all pointed to a good meal. The dramatically presented smoked herring was small, and did not taste of smoke. The ribs looked striking as well, and I eagerly anticipated the pine leaves adding a rosemary type vibe to the dish, but they too were tasteless. The ribs were fine, but they were just ribs, and the green tomato garnish was smiliarly bland. I had the cake for dessert, and while redeeming, it could not rescue the meal. The wine was over priced, and the zweigelt we had was not very good. The waiter was informal, and that's fine, but he did not listen, and probably thought that all Americans were easily impressed.. I felt he wanted to put us in to the food with the best margins, ignored what we ordered, and showed up with the wrong stuff. Overall, a very disappointing experience for me. When we first arrived, there was a bit of commotion amongst the wait staff so we walked around for them to actually acknowledge us. Then we were led to a table right next to/on top of the only other couple eating in the restaurant. It was right underneath a window and it was very hot. I asked to move to the table next to us and the hostess reluctantly said she would have to check the reservations. She never came back. I would like to mention no one ever sat at that table during the entire time we were there so we could have definitely sat there. It wasn't that busy. We received our bread and butter. The butter had a hair in it. They didn't come back again until someone was dropping off the appetizers so I wasn't able to tell them until then. The food was fine otherwise. Not mind blowing and with little to no creativity. Overpriced for what it was. The rest of the meal went without incident, thankfully. I wouldn't return to this establishment. The food wasn't memorable but the poor experience was. My biggest regret is not leaving right when we sat down after their unwillingness to accommodate us. read more

We celebrated my husbands birthday here and boy was it good! It is located in the old Noma location. We hired a boat to go into town and it dropped us off on Nyhavn, and we walked across the new bridge. It was a hot night so we were glad to be seated by the window and being able to enjoy the breeze from outside. I had the cucumber salat, steak tartare and shared the cod tail. Other guests tried beef, pork and the bone marrow. Every dish was so well executed. when I mention cucumber salat it was little baby cucumber shoots dressed so nicely and with a strong fresh taste of cucumber. The steak tartare came out as a sculpture that one almost didnt want to eat because it was so pretty. The cod tail was just absolutely fabulous and the portion so generous that we couldnt finish it. The waiter was really good at pinpointing each of our flavors and preferences and paired us individually with amazing beers to go with the food. This is definitely a place I will return and I have already sent several friends to try it. Everyone loves it. We loved it better than Noma actually. read more

Schnitzel dreamn' with whipped horseradish, divine beer and a little treat of brussle sprouts. Interesting over deliciousness. We enjoyed our evening at Barr which is one of many exquisite spots in Copenhagen which have popped up in the city. The food was superb for presentation, concept, and the decor provides a lovely dining experience. The staff were Broadway actors and provided a commentary which could have received a Tony. However, you do still feel like it's all a play. The food is a performance also, and underneath the entertainment of our professional weight staff and all the pomp sometimes was "interesting food" sometimes forgetful of the need for a good "mmmmmmm". The potato salad was meh, and the smoked fish was challenging. If you have time get there a bit earlier to appreciate the surroundings and have a stroll by the channels. Once i got there I got the kitchen view seat so i could appreciate all the artwork going on . I got a 4 course tasting menu (only 600 krona). Started off with smoked herring followed by a fantastic beef tartare filled with russian salad and topped with thin red beets. I moved to bone marrow paired with smoked beer (highlight of the night) and finished up with honey glazed cod (highly recommend). To wrap up i got some home made hard liquor. Wow. One of the best meals. Our table of 5 shared the salmon for 2, the chicken for 2 and a vegetarian main (not on menu). All were outstanding, but the vegetarian meal may have been the biggest surprise - they said they would whip something up to accommodate the vegetarian in our group. It may have been the best of all 3 dishes. I absolutely loved the warm smoked salmon with Rosti potatoes. If I was here another night would go back. After a week traveling the country of Denmark and heading to Aarhus, Lokken and Skagen and traveling to Grenen beach to see where the Baltic and North Seas meet. After our long journey back to Copenhagen our " afsluttende middag pa ferie (final dinner of vacation) was one to be sought after and a delicious wrap up to a wonderful vacation. We did the Chefs tasting here. It began with some beef tartare covered in raw lima beans and fresh picked clovers had to eat it with the delicious rye bread and Lard oh I know America misses Lard! That was followed by crepes and Caviar with roasted ants on top and some type of mousse. The main dish was Cod Tail with a 24 hour onion reduction glazed on top and cooked to perfection topped with another sauce after. It was bomb.com. and some pickled gherkins, and the dessert was my favorite part i was mad when it was over fresh strawberries home made strawberry mousse and house made whipped cream and house made Vaffeal. Several of us did the beer pairing and they were all soo tasty. The Danes know what they are doing over there. If you want a eye popping decadent meal go to Barr. You'll love it. They were impatient and less than welcoming. Unfortunately the food was poorly executed and spectacularly overpriced. The skate and schnitzel were both very salty (and the two in our party who had the schnitzel had stomach problems later that night). The table was charged 125 DKK for tap water and another 125 DKK for 5 pieces of rye bread. The bread was the best part of the meal. The menu is limited and two of the mains (chicken and plaice) required a minimum of two diners opting for those dishes thereby restricting the overall choice. Lastly, for a largish restaurant, there were only two lavatories so lines frequently formed in front of the tables. Copenhagen has so many excellent restaurants.
