Barrowlands has an attractive outside with bright flashing lights saying ' barrowlands' I have seen many bands perform here , not a bad venue. I feels like a good size , not to small or not to big. The Barrowland ballroom has iconic status in Glasgow and has a well deserved reputation as The place to go for a good gig . Acoustics are great and it has a sprung floor which is fun. Outside has to be the largest signage ever , you definitely couldn't,t miss it . It is rumoured to be the largest of its kind in the UK . The ballroom is spacious ,however is standing room only .There is a bar in the ball room , in addition to the other on the lower level . Drinks are served in plastic glasses only and sadly the beer isn,t great either. Security is quite tight on admission , most concert goers however are accepting of such these days . In the past have I have seen the great and the good here , Deacon Blue , Van Morrison etc . Tonight The Lumineers were playing, being a progressive folk/ rock group from Denver , Colorado . Their live performance was awesome , with great participation from the audience , who seemed to know all their songs . I did remember to look at the ceiling which is quite a work of art in itself. If you are petite it could be hard to see over the heads of the audience so I would recommend standing to the side for better visuals . Awesome place. read more

I've always wanted to visit the Barrowland Ballroom or as the locals call it here "The Barras". There were so many times I would walk past the front of the building but the lights from the famous sign were never on and I have always been so curious about how it would be to attend a rad concert in this world famous venue. Unfortunately, every time I am on an extended stay here in Glasgow I can never find a show I want to go to, well not until this week! :) My boyfriend who's a local in Glasgow, surprised me with two Franz Ferdinand tickets for Tuesday night's show and I was ecstatic! Seeing a band play not only in the Barrowlands, finally, but a band that is from Glasgow...definitely was excited about that! We got to the venue about 30 min before opening and I could see the bright lights of the front sign, this was definitely a great picture opportunity since not many people were there yet. After a few photos we lined up and were let in not too long after. It was cool because walking up the stairs as you enter, the walls are filled with posters from past shows, which build anticipation leading to the ballroom. After getting a drink we went straight in and it was an awesome view. I've been to a lot of indoor standing venues in the US but this one was the largest one I have seen in the UK. Super spacious dance floor and high ceilings didn't make you feel hot or claustrophobic like most indoor dancehalls do. While the place was filling up gradually the opening act "The Eagles", a grungy rock band, started playing. Not my kind of music, didn't even do sound check so my ears were bleeding. After a short intermission Franz Ferdinand came on and that's when you could really see how the ballroom compliments bands playing in the venue. The lights and sounds were awesome and the band really got the crowd involved. I like how the venue creates a more intimate connection with the crowd and the band, unlike big arena shows which are very impersonal. I never felt too hot, up until the very end encore of the show, which is VERY rare for a indoor standing venue. After the show was over it was very easy to exit, didn't feel like we were walking to a cow slaughter like most small venues. After the show I took a few more photos with the sign since it was late in the evening and the colors popped more. You can practically taste the sweat, alcohol and sex in this place. Such an amazing, grimy atmosphere. I saw Errors/Mogwai here on 22nd December and what a fantastic xmas present it was. With good company and decent drinks (served by friendly and funny staff), it was pretty much a perfect night. I love Glasgow, and the Barrowland Ballroom is definitely in my top five places to visit whilst here. Awesome. read more

I've been coming to see bands play for years and have always had a great time. It's a fantastic size to see a band play, I'd say the best size of venue. Very handy for plenty of bars and takeaways. Much prefered to the O2, just feels more open and grander. Bands always tend to get a great atmosphere going here. thouroughly recommend. read more

I've seen a few performances here. l was always advised to stand at the rear as people throw their plastic glasses with contents at the people in front. If you are peckish near the end there is an elderly lady that sells burgers near the toilets, l found her by accident. This venue has a large dance floor i'm not sure haw many people can get in but it will be a lot. High ceilings l did notice someone glued a can of beer to the ceiling. The drinks are expensive here a can of fosters near it's sell by date £4.50. read more

The gorgeous nostalgia that mists around this place really is magical. As soon as you walk in, you can imagine your Granny or Grandad waltzing around, having a great time with their pals. It is now one of Glasgow's leading venues, and is a firm favourite with everyone who visits. I have never heard anyone say a bad word about it. I have been here a good few times, and each time the atmosphere has been awesome and second to none. The acoustics are brilliant, far, far superior to the tinny shed that is the SECC. The only thing about it that I can grumble about is the exterior. When it is closed it looks like a derelict building. Although for a girl like me who loves the tack of Blackpool, I still kinda like it. Fantastic. read more

I'm ashamed to say I reached 21 without having been to a gig here. I know, I know, I hang my head in shame...I'm an unworthy Glaswegian! I really had no idea what expect other than hearing that the floor bounces. (Does it?!) The Barrowlands main hall was so much bigger than I expected and the atmosphere inside is just incredible. I saw Old Crow Medicine Show just here last night and I can't think of a better venue. It's just small enough to feel intimate and just big enough for that electric gig atmosphere. The ABC or SECC can't really compete with such an old gem like Barrowlands. I can just imagine the delightful ballroom it was back in the day! read more

The legendary Barras ballroom with the sprung wooden floor. The best venue in town bar none, it holds around 2000, has stars on the ceiling, and unlike other venues I could mention, sells Diesel (snakebite, whatever you want to call it) straight up rather than making you mix it yourself like some kind of twisted episode of Blue Peter. read more

Classic glasgow venue, usual quirks with old ballroom type rooms and venue prices for drinks etc. The room really has its own sound, best experienced with an 'in amongst it' attitude... But if you're not so keen then stick to the middle of the room for a good balance of sound and atmosphere and the slight step at the sides is great for those less blessed with height. read more

I've been to quite a few gigs at the Barrowlands and have to say I've never been disappointed.It is a bit run down inside but when you look up at the ceiling and see some of the original decor it must have been a very impressive place in it's day.Huge hall so plenty of room and your not too squashed in at a gig and it doesn't get quite as warm as other venues.Drinks are cheap but the bar can get quite busy and parking near can be a bit of a pain if you don;t get there nice and early.However,these are just small things to complain about..the best thing about the Barrowlands is the atmosphere which can't be beaten. read more

this is a CLASSIC venue that still somehow leaves the hi-tech modern state-of-the-art ones behind in the dust. why? because it is the "real deal"! it not only has been a dance and gig venue since way back in the days of swing and rock n roll, or was the hunting ground of "bible john" the suspected 60s serial killer, but has continued in some form since those days. much like the electric ballroom in camden, london, it used tyo host some of the stalls for the glasgow barrows market, and i remember buying 78rpm 10" singles there from little richard, to bill halaey, and this in the 1980s! gig-wise i've seen everything from calssic punk rock to full on psychedelic techno/trance/acid. from the ramones, to the fall, frokm underworld to orbital! in the mid 90s the famous calssic edinburgh techno/house club once they got their sea legs for top end promotio9n and event organization safe enough for 1000's of "hads", The Pure, launched a series of quarterly parties there from around 94-ish till the late 90s with bills including psychick warriors of gaia, dave clark, david mills, orbital, underworld, with regulars twitch and brainstorm, and dribbler and bill. the barras was the perfect regular vebue foir them easily playing host to coach loads from all over the UK. with staffing who like cool calm clockwork kept everything including all kinds of queues smooth and easy. the decor is a beautifully faded take on a soprt of circus art-deco, with a bar along one whole side, and a second bar downstairs which doubled perfectly as the cill-out for relevent events. "bouncers" were pretty strict, but very fair, with few complaints from patrons. i would recommend heading along to this venue for any kind of live acts as it seems to blend large venue with small venue intimacy somehow. and it always seemed to encapsulate the feel of the classic gig, with none of the xfactor sterility. toilets basic, but functional (we were there fo9r the music, and somehow the cruddy bogs just seemed to fit perfectly) so the toilets were merely there to bhe toilets, and no doubt still are. do grab a chance to get to a gig there. especially if it is one of the o0lder punk, or rock n roll bands! it makes them feel in context to their sound. read more

The Barra's is an old fashioned ballroom and when you first enter and the place is quite empty you may think, what a dump, the smell of fried onions reaches your nostrils and the aircraft hanger roof starts to give you a sence of the fairground, but from when the performers strike the first note till the end of their set the whole place starts to bounce. The Barras is probably my favourite place in the whole of Glasgow. Walking towards it the first thing you see is the big flashing neon 'Barrowland' sign and it always makes me happy. It's in a slightly 'edgy' area and the shop across the road is called Tim Land. Inside there's a mile long queue for the bar, the toilets and the cloakroom, downstairs it stinks of greasy burgers, upstairs it's sweaty, hot, dingy, crowded and you're likely to get hit in the head by a flying pint the minute you get inside. And it's brilliant. It has energy, atmosphere and history and the Barrowland Ballroom has the ability to make any gig an unforgettable experience. The best gig I've been to here was Arcade Fire last year - it was utterly amazing. So I can't possibly recommend this place enough - if a band you like is playing here then you should not miss it. This is a really good live music venue. It's spacious with plenty of seating off to the sides. It is in desperate need of a refurb and it's certainly not the cleanest venue I've seen. For a southerner like myself the metal detectors came as a bit of a shock and when I was informed that it was also in a pretty bad part of the city I was a little concerned that I was having to make my own way back to the hotel that night. I encountered no problems and I'm sure it was just the locals having a laugh at my expense. I would most definitely make the trip to Glasgow again to see band here. read more

This has got to be one of the best and oldest venues in Glasgow. It's location is great for public transport, food or drinks before the gig and holds a whole lot of people. This has got to be one of my best nights out and I can't wait to go back to my next night there in September. The staff are amazing and the price of drink was good too. read more

I have only praise for the barrowlands, it may be an old venue but that just adds to the magic of seeing your favourite bands there. I have seen two concerts here 'the saw doctors' and 'Jimmy Eat World' and the lighting is as awesome as the sound. The atmosphere is also amongst the best everyone is friendly to each other. You may get beer logged in your direction but isnt that all part of the fun?? There is also many bars surrounding the 'barra's' if you wanna have a wee drink before hand!! read more
