'Let's go to the pub, let's go to the pub, let's go to the pub' It's a phrase I respond positively to. After a wee band practice down the road at Creation Studios, I was enticed to go here. It was really busy. Pricy at the bar, as has been mentioned elsewhere, but I was on the soft stuff after band practice, really thirsty. Quite a nice warm interior, really trendy, with a good mix of people in there. They have a promiment advertisement for a 2 course lunch just now priced at £6.95 which I might consider, going during the day when it's presumably nowhere near as busy. This self-styled indie/rock bar is a relative newcomer to Trongate, and hopefully a sign of the regeneration here. We dropped by one Tuesday night and ordered a double Southern Comfort and coke and a bottle of Kopparberg. This came to £9.10, which was waaaay more than we had expected. We took a seat in front of the giant football screen to recover from the shock. Up to the minute rock music plays in here, at a comfortable level to talk over. On nice afternoons, the big windows slide open to let the air circulate and provide a nice atmosphere, linking the indoor seating to the outdoor. Live bands play on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cocktail menu is quite extensive and cocktails are named after rock classics like Purple Haze and Desperado (gotta love The Eagles!!) At £5.95 for the least expensive though, they don't come cheap. The stripped floorboards and warehouse setting further lend to the rocky atmosphere. A small selection of bar bites is available, most intriguingly the "Good Olives" at £1.95 and the "Even Better Olives" also priced at £1.95. Hmmm...what? read more

A good friend of mine played a gig here over the summer and I would describe it as an average venue. The downstairs is ok but the sound was too loud and it drowned out the vocals. Drinks were also quite expensive. I went back some weeks later as their lunch deal had been recommended to me. We had some traditional pub grub which was fine but nothing to write home about. The kitchen is open seven days fairly decent food and the 2 course lunch is only £6.95 (12-4pm) so if you are near Trongate on a limited budget at lunch time then this may be the place for you. Maggie May's, just what type of bar do you want to be? You (kind of) advertise yourself as a rock bar, but I'm not so sure. This bar has a very upstairs/downstairs feel to it that kind of puts me off going here. It's advertised as a bit of a rock 'n' roll alternative to the usual Trongate/Merchant City vibe, but you'd be forgiven for not realising this on entering. There's also around 4 bouncers at the door which I find a bit intimidating and off putting. Upstairs is packed with the usual Merchant City crowd and I always feel a bit awkward if I've not made a "smart casual" effort to have a drink here. Downstairs is more my sort of thing. A bit more relaxed with booths and shabby couches, it is in desperate need of a facelift and a bit of a makeover, but it fulfils my inner rocker that wee bit more. The music stays quite low until around 10pm at the weekends which is great because if you have a booth with friends you can get a good chat in before the "club night" starts to kick off. It's a bit of a mish/mash and you won't be surprised to find the odd pop song amongst The Beatles and Slipknot. It's all a bit odd and adds to that feeling that they don't really know their identity. Again the booths are a bit tatty looking, and for the love of all that is good, they need to clean those massive lights that hang over the tables (YUCK!). It's relaxed though and I prefer relaxed when I'm out with friends. They have an extensive cocktail menu, each attributed to a rock legend and you can buy some of them by the pitcher to share. They do table service too which is a good thing because you will wait SO LONG for your cocktails in here. So long, in fact, that if you're in the mood to party this could be a bit of a mood killer. Normally I'd have given 2 stars for somewhere so shabby and confused, but I'll confess that I've had a nice night whenever I've been here. Not great, but nice enough and that merits an extra star. It's not my first choice but I'm never upset to have to go here for a night out. There are places in the city centre that I've been to that are visually beautiful, but just void of any atmosphere whatsoever. Maggie Mays, for all its flaws, still ensure a decent, chilled out night with plenty of space and some good tunes. read more

This rockabilly-lovin' tourist was thrilled to discover Maggie May's and a kickass band called The Meat Men that played there. The tunes were jiving, the joint was jumping. The packed audience was a fun cross section of ages, though after the live show ended most of the older folks left. Despite the shift to a younger clientele there were no bar stars in sight and I didn't hear a single drunken "woooo!" even once. Coolness abided. I paid six quid extra to check out the basement, where a gnarly all-girl punk band called Skinny Velvet rocked the shit out of everyone's eardrums. Great and eclectic music, upbeat vibe, friendly staff, and drinks a flowing all contributed to a most gratifying hangover. read more

I usually tend to stay around the west end of Glasgow than head towards the merchant city pubs, but often on a rare occasion I've been known to pop in here. I've never payed any attention to the music upstairs, possibly an iPod , but we once went downstairs where it's more of a kids crèche, that was filled with a lot of scary people but l think that was the week of Halloween. There is food served till pretty late I feel sorry for someone that has to work a microwave at 2am. I remember having some chicken wings and still managed to get sauce over three people. Maggie Mays has the well deserved reputation for being ned central. And yet this is where we ended up for part of this week's (pre holiday) date night. I have a few things to say : I had a meal with some friends here a couple of months ago - and was surprised at how good (and cheap - it has a 5pm deal) it was. All of us were happy with our meals, and the service was quick and pleasant. Given that this was a Friday after work, the entire place was heaving - but foodwise it was all work groups. Tonight, we were just looking for somewhere quiet for a beer and a blether, and somehow ended up here. The music was great - a mix of rock, covering from the 80's right up to now. Staff were nice, and quick again. But the toilets were (please excuse the awful pun) total crap. Very dark (as in, they're painted black), very messy, no paper towels, and a broken dryer - it was really quiet most of the time we were there so not really an excuse for that. It got busy before we left - catching a lot of the neddier passers-by from a gig at the Barrowlands (see other review). Overall, I'd be happy to hang here for a couple of hours when it's quiet, but I'd rather give it a miss when it's busy. On the plus side, it does have a 3am license..... read more

Maggie May's is one of these places that is very 'now'. It's an indie/rock bar, that has live bands playing over the weekends, plays modern and classic rock/indie anthems, and has a small club venue below it. It seems to attract clientele of all ages, however, I can see that it's trying to attract the studenty crowd from the area (what with it being 'cool' and all), but with it's prices, it means that only the wealthiest of student can drink here (nearly £5 for a single vodka. That's just not on - what happened to 99p drinks, eh!?). The cocktails, although expensive, are actually quite tasty, and the classic rock names mean that you can play 'guess the band' as a drinking game, which can be quite hilarious. The club venue is a little strange, (watch out for the gap between the stage and wall to stage left - that foot gap caused me far too much trouble on a night out there - I fell down it on several occasions), and not very busy - me and my friends seemed to be the only people there, bar the 2 creepy older guys hanging at the bar. Tut. Apart from that, I can understand why people drink in the 'cool' surroundings, but just don't expect to find me propping up the bar. Unless you're paying. read more

Picture the scene. A man (who shall remain nameless *cough*) has a signing to go to at GuitarGuitar in the Trongate. The man is understandably a bit nervous about going to the signing, as it's one of his heroes, and also happens to be the quintessential Rock Chick (capitals deserved and earned) that is the stonkingly gorgeous Lzzy Hale. Not wanting to be too far from the shop to keep an eye on the queue - and truth be told to see if he could catch a glimpse of her arriving before anyone else - Maggie May's was selected as a suitable refreshment point. The man has friends who play in bands that swear by Maggie May's, and enjoy the atmosphere. The man may also have been here before in a drunken haze and just not recognised it. What the man found was a very serviceable music orientated bar, with a wide choice of spirits - for the man had a whisky drinking friend with him, who cared not for Lzzy Hale and was just along to laugh at the man - and a few very choice bottles of ale in the fridges. The taps left a bit to be desired, with the Heinken being a bit... fuzzy. The Amstel was fine, so the man will just put it down to a bad pint. The atmosphere was good, the bar was nice and clean and bright, with open spaces, plenty of tables and small counters at the windows to sit and watch the world and the people go by, and glare at every taxi going by in case Lzzy Hale was in one of them. Spoiler: She was not. A couple of pints were had, jokes and quips were exchanged with the excellent staff, and the time came for the man to move on and join the queue and meet Lzzy Hale and try not to make a fool of himself, get tongue tied, or look like a puppy dog. I was put off Maggie May's a few years ago after being at a music event there and how empty it was however much has changed. I was only upstairs and has a great old time. They had a great selection of promos with something for everyone and the music had on in the background was really great. The only reason I've opted for 4 stars instead of 5 is when we asked about promos that we hadn't heard of the girl serving us was rather short and was convinced they were both whiskys when it turned out they were a bourbon and a rum. I'll be back soon though for a last min Monday night outing it was great choice. read more

Came to Maggie May's to watch the Superbowl and it was pretty good. They had couches lined up in front of a big screen and even gave us free snacks at half time. The servers who work here are friendly and accommodating. I didn't eat anything since it was after midnight, but the gin and tonics were tasty - so no complaints from me. A good place to come for a few drinks. They seem to have music on quite often, so that's always fun. Although I will say it can be hard to hear your friends if a band is playing - something to consider if you are looking for a semi-quiet place to catch up. read more

I had a few hours to kill while waiting for my train at the Glasgow station so I started walking down the street (Argyle?) and ran into this pub. It was a lazy, sunny mid-day afternoon and the place was pretty empty except for a few people eating lunch. The staff was friendly and helpful in helping me sort out which Scottish beer I needed to try. I took my pint outside and sat in the sun on their patio and had a lazy time. I was only here on a slow afternoon and I only had a beer, but I found it perfectly acceptable and really enjoyable. I have no idea how good or bad the food might be and I got the feeling that the night scene might be totally different, but overall I liked it. read more

Its nice to have Maggie May's in the neigborhood to pop on by for a wee drink or two. Live music doesn't hurt either. They house an impressive stocked bar, given its not too big size; where an array of whiskies and spirits sit and await guzzling. With a worthwhile cocktail list that is made well by friendly servers, tasteful music, and rowdy fun crowd its hard to go wrong here. Its an easy chill place to end up if other places end up being too much of a hassle or for those nights when you want to do something.. but wanna be lazy at the same time. Its a good vibe done very casually. Reminds me of that scene from Titanic when Jack takes Rose for a good time downstairs. The lunch deal here is great - two courses for £6.95. The husband and I ordered one deal between the two of us and they were totally cool about that--just brought the app and entree together and we were set. Although our individual drinks (a wine and a beer) cost nearly as much as the lunch special. The atmosphere is very chill in the afternoons, with an undercurrent of anticipation for a big night. For lunch, it's a great place to sprawl out and have a good chin wag while nursing a drink (or pounding a drink, as the case may be). It's a place that is both spirited and mellow. It's cool, but doesn't appear to take itself too seriously. I liked it and will definitely be back. read more

For an informal meal this place is pretty good. Specialising in Italian/American pub grub, like pastas and burgers. Some of their dishes are surprisingly good, like the Stornoway black pudding and apple's in cider sauce. Tasty noms. Coupled with a 'Greedy B' burger for the hungry. Tasty big noms. Every time I've been here the soundtrack has been good mix of classic rock or chart indie. They sometimes have live music or DJs, although Glasgow City Council may put an end to that if they have their way. Staff are cool and chatty, they try to challenge themselves by remembering your order, something which fills me with doubt "oh my, what are they gonna bring out?" I get past this by ordering lots of wee things and then changing my mind several times, thereby, forcing them to go get a pad of paper. Harsh, I know, but I wouldn't trust my own brainium to remember what I ordered. read more

Just came here to have a pint and meet up with two friends and the bouncer with l an I hate America or gays attitude profiled my husband and the friend we were meeting. As we watched groups of locals walk in I went to the bartender and explained and she was like um we don't care you're Americans and we have a massive party downstairs NOT TRUE (about the party). I proceeded to ask how they planned to pay for their entertainment for the evening if they let no one in or are selective, she knew I was right but still gave that smug I hate you Americans coming to my country to spend money. Point is if you want the world to look at your country,state or county the right way you show respect especially when it's the largest income for that country. I would never retaliate on any persons for the small mindedness of a select group of people but it's a troubling trend and needs to stop and y'all need to learn how to like Americans, others from your entire empire. I would how this review makes you change your mind about this pub. Mind you we just flew in and got to our air bnb for the next few days. read more

We ended up here late, after closing out another spot with a going away party. A few of us came here to squeak a little bit more out of the night. Dancing, a DJ who seemed to actually pay attention to the crowd, and a fun atmosphere were just great. I particularly like that it wasn't full of a million studenty types. Two words. SAUSAGE FEST. There were maybe 5 girls in the whole bar even though there were plenty of people there. The bartender gave a good recommendation for a local Scottish beer (Innis and Oak) and we went to the basement to check it out. An OLD football game was playing too loud but all the dudes seemed excited/involved about it anyway. The only girls in the bar were sitting across from us and at one point in the night a lemon slice coming from that direction hit me in the face! The service and venue seem ok but they need new Saturday night entertainment and new clientele. read more

Pub east side of downtown Glasgow for locals. It's on a corner and has an outdoor patio. Medium size inside with pub feel and open. However music is loud and half indie and half death rock. Given the mixed aged crowd it seemed odd for 6:00pm. It's a pub that doubles as a night club, given they have bands play in the basement. Large selection of drinks including malt scotch. Food was quite good including the chicken salad, the steak stew and the mustard chicken (actually came with pea pods!). They must have a chef as presentation was very good and they offer several different kinds of mashed potatoes that are great, and I do note there is a restaurant part in the back that is quieter. A step or two above regular pub food. Prices are quite reasonable given the quality of food. Hostesses very attentive, polite and pretty, and they seem to continually be doing laps around the central bar although on the second night they were hard to flag down. Note to staff: before 9:00pm turn down the volume and play lighter music so people don't have to shout at each other. Good for people watching and has a patio. Loses a star for 87Db noise and for staff throwing glass bottles into the bin making a racket.... Which apparently is a cool bar thing. Free wifi. read more

Named after the famous Rod Stewart song or perhaps in prescient tribute to the type of ladies who frequent it, Maggie May's attracts a mixed crowd. I would dispute that the atmosphere is "always buzzy" as I have been in on several occasions when it has been deserted. Club nights were abandoned downstairs because of lack of attendees. Not to be overly negative there are a great range of drinks and it is spacious if you are with a group. read more

There are a few things that are not-so-good about Maggie May's--namely the tiny women's washroom with only two toilets and the fact you have to show up really early if you expect to sit down--but it also has a lot going for it which makes it a fun joint. Though I've been here a handful of times, it had always been for drinks up until recently. On a whim and looking for somewhere with reasonable prices, I dropped in with friends on a Friday night. We managed to get a table (even with it being 7:30 or so), and our food came pretty quickly. I ordered the soup of the day (butternut squash which came with crusty bread), and was pleasantly surprised! Nothing bad to say about it other than the crusty bread being more soft than crusty, but for the 3.50 or whatever it was, I didn't have any room to complain. For my main, I ordered the veggie burger (breaded mushrooms and goat's cheese). It came with a massive serving of thick french fries. Oh my God, was it ever huge! I'm usually able to really chow down, but the patty was about two times the size of the actual bun. Wearing a pair of maternity pants would have served me well, even after only half my meal. The server offered to doggybag the rest, which was great, but I'm not sure how the breaded mushrooms would have held up after another couple hours. For £8, it was definitely worth it; not the best burger I've had (pretty greasy), but good. Music-wise, I really appreciate Maggie Mays. They've got a lot of alternative and indie rock always playing in the background. Onto the less favourable bits: as mentioned before, the women's bathroom is just yucky. There are only two stalls, and the last couple times I've been, one of the toilet seats has been broken. There's also always toilet paper littering the floor, and you're lucky if the actual toilet is not plugged up with paper. (Sorry for anyone reading this while trying to decide on somewhere to eat, but it just had to be said!) read more

Maggies is an excellent all round bar. The food is tasty, the music is always eclectic - everything from Alice in Chains to The Rolling Stones! There is free live music every night and £2 promos on week days! food served til 2am too which is great when you are feeling worse for wear! Staff are adorable. No complaints! read more

It was only a Mac 'n' Cheese, but it was quickly delivered, creamy, nicely cheesy and had a slighty browned top. Criticism would be for me another type of cheese could be added for even more flavour, the top could have been even more browned, and where were the chips? - who wants salad leaves and tomato chunks with Mac? read more

A great pub which on a Saturday around 6pm puts on a band in the bar, we seen The Shivering Sheiks who do kinda rockabilly style covers and they were great. The pub is on a corner of the trongate and there is a restaurant right at the back which overlooks Albion Street, there is a nightclub downstairs if that's your thing. The food is really good, they have about 15 burgers on the menu which are proper mis-shapen mince not frozen rubbish like certain other pubs I could mention serve up. We have been to the restaurant a few times and always enjoyed it, they usually offer a market menu for £10.95 for 2 courses. If you book through 5pm.com you will get a free glass of wine or bottle of beer with your meal. The music is a good mixture of rock and 70's-00's classics and is always blaring. This place is a welcome change from the bland bars of the "merchant city". Watch out for the bouncer who covers the door on Albion Street, he turns into robocop if you dare spark up a fag "the wrong side of the sandwich board", they musta got fined by the cooncill! read more

I've been going here for a good few years now and It really is a brilliant place in Merchant City. Although it prides itself on being a venue for all. It caters to Students, Office Workers, Musicians etc. It really is a great place for a late night drink when you don't want to go to club. At night the bar is very lively yet also relaxed so you can enjoy your drink and you and your friends won't be disturbed. The only downside is that the club downstairs was renovated a while back and gone was the red décor and comfy seat and replaced by stainless steel panels and tiny booth's. I felt that this led it to lose a lot of it's charm and atmosphere. However, if it's a drink you want with friends or your significant other the upstairs bar and restaurant is perfect. read more
