Well, for veggie/vegan food there's not much to go wrong with 13th note - if you don't mind eating in a pub atmosphere that is. It's not the place to bring your date for a romantic meal for two. The furniture and decor is looking a bit tired these days and could definitely do with a bit of sprucing up. Still, the food is excellent and they have a pretty good range of ales too. I'm totally and deeply infatuated with this quaint eccentric place. I don't know where to start..so here goes. The elderflower fizz is transformative. I had the Dahl as a starter and I was afraid to keep eating because I knew there was no way I'd be able to eat my main course...so I reluctantly pulled my lips from the amazing Dahl to ensure I could enjoy the masala, and it totally did not disappoint my palate! When I last reviewed this place the food was going through a bad patch. A change to the menu has changed all of this. This place is worth a visit for the handcut chips alone. With the skin left on and the herby additions, these are some of the best in the city. Just don't expect real mayo in this veggie/vegan place. I have given this place five stars since it has improved but also following the Chris checklist system. Best Vegan Place in Glasgow - Check Best Grubby Decor in town - check Best Mix of patrons - Check Daily Papers available for your perusal - Check This place is the only place to go if you have visiting or live-in veggies. It beats Mono on Service and the 78 for non-greasy food. The thing that this place retains is the variety of patrons. whether it is the Denim Jacket Brigade, the Trongate Knit and Natter club or the Old Men and Dogs Society, this place does appeal to a wide selection of the Glasgow populace. First time visit to the Note this weekend, as we dropped in looking for a different vegetarian option and a quick bite to eat. Its not much to look at, and is fairly dark inside (although later I noted theres a brighter dining bit at the back), and has a somewhat eclectic mix of old wood furnishings and legs (yes I did say legs - mannequin legs with lights round them?). Anyway, this didn't put us off, and the staff were super laid-back, chilled and friendly as we ordered a few drinks and settled in a booth. There's a great selection of food to choose from, including smaller tapas style dishes like hummus and fritters and mains including veggie burgers, haggis and curries. I wanted to try something a bit different as a change to my usual veggie burger option but had read some reviews and wanted to try it, so I was happy when Mr H suggested we get a selection of stuff to share. We opted for the dhal lentils with flatbread, dressed house salad with chickpeas, beetroot and sesame seeds and the spicy veggie burger with chips. The veggie burger was one of the tastiest I've had, all crispy on the outside and full of flavour. Likewise, the dhal was delicious as was the salad which had a lovely dressing and lots of contrasting flavours. You can tell all the food is made from scratch and that they have a pretty good knowledge of how to cater for vegetarians. The food came really fast which was good as we were on a tight schedule. Best part was it was really cheap, the burger and chips were only £7 and the lentils £4! We were en route to the Yelp chocolate event, so skipped dessert (much to my dismay) but the Note is definitely on my return visit list. read more

I really enjoy the 13th note, it's somewhere I've popped into a few times for different reasons. I've went to see friends play in the downstairs venue space, which is great for an intimate gig. I've popped in for a drink if I've been in the area and I've been for food a few times. All the experiences have been pretty good! I really enjoy the food! Everything I've tasted has been yum, and there's so many more things I want to try. I love the spicy bean burger, it is my favourite. It's so hard not to order it every time. :) Last time I was there I tried the superfood salad, it was so tasty. Filled with so many things I love. The sweet potato was a particularly good addition. The fries are great, house salads fresh and delicious and I tried a bit of the aubergine parcels which were yum. It's a relaxed atmosphere, somewhere you could happily loose an afternoon. The staff are lovely although not the speediest. I'd definitely be back time and time again. read more

I popped in yesterday for a meal with friends - with the Games and Merchant City Festival converging in this area there was no surprise it was pretty busy in the Note. Thankfully we got a table ok and the wait for the bar wasn't long - although the wait for food was. We were warned when we ordered though, so that was fine. I ordered the Sri Lankan curry with a side of chips. After around 45 minutes the food emerged (my belly was cheering). I'd ordered the curry because it was described as aubergine, cauliflower, mushroom and peas but three of these ingredients weren't to be seen and instead had zucchini in it and lots of cauliflower. That was a little disappointing as I love aubergine, mushroom and pea so instead I was stuck with two pretty mediocre vegetables. If I'd be warned in advance I'd have changed my order but they probably didn't have time to let me know. That being said, I did enjoy the flavours and thought it was a good sized portion. The chips were also pretty nice. All up though, if I visited the Note again when it was this busy I'd definitely head somewhere else. read more

After seeking vegetarian food recommendations on the Yelp Glasgow talk board, I ate here twice during my recent stay in the west of Scotland and came away satisfied on both occasions. On my first visit, I had the daily special from the board which was tomato cannellini brodo with eggplant parmagiana. See my photos - this was a thick soup of tomato and beans with a stack of grilled eggplant topped with fresh rocket in the middle and served with a side of garlic bread. This was fairly priced at £6.75, and I loved the thought that the chef of a vegetarian café-bar would push the boat out to attempt this sort of dish - and very successfully too, I might add! Second visit was with mother, when we both went for the half pizza and chips with two toppings - extra cheese and rocket on both, please! I also had the beetroot soup of the day. (See photos of pizza and soup.) All very nice! I personally found the guy who served me both times to be great, and just the type of person to cover all the bases from manning a bar to taking food orders in this sort of vegetarian establishment. In the bar area, the near-full length windows make for a nicely daylighted space, and there is copious café seating around the performance stage for when the crowds arrive. I've looked in on but have yet to dine in Mono across the road. Both 13th Note and Mono have a relaxed ambience. 13th is probably just that bit more relaxed again, with studenty/dive bar décor, but definitely not an actual dive, with the downstairs toilet problem mentioned by other reviewers seeming to be a thing of the past and general hygiene of tables etc not a problem. Mono is definitely a wee bit more stylish in a modern Scandanavian way with various earnestly arty things going on in rooms off the main area. But I think I would look in on both places if I lived locally. Also, there are some nice galleries nearby, including various things in that building on Trongate which the council revamped. read more

The real appeal is the live music downstairs and all that comes with that scene. A good music venue and a good place to have a few beers before you head out to a gig, whether or not it is downstairs. Very delicious. Split a spicy veggie burger, haggis, and BLT - enjoyed all of them. I found the haggis to be different from other vegetarian haggis - and different in a good way - the taste is wonderful. Atmosphere is chill and laid back, full bar and comfy booths to sit in. Good place to meet up with friends, as well as a good place to work (have wifi, big tables, and lots of space). We came with a big group and the staff was super nice and accommodating. Thought it was time to give my last review an update. So: Things I love about the Note : The staff - always friendly and willing to blether while they are working. And they'll answer any questions you have about the veg/vegan aspect here. The food - all food here is vegetarian (mainly vegan, too). The spicy veg burger is awesome, as are the falafels and fries. The music - in the main bar, there's always music on. At the weekend this tends to be rock & metal, but during the week veers more towards Daft Punk styles. The gig space downstairs always has gigs at the weekend - some of which are so loud you feel the floor vibrate upstairs! Can't wait to go to another gig there soon - Debs M, I'm talking to you! The Note always has a great atmosphere and is generally just a great place to go hang out. Things I don't like : The toilets need a refurb. Wow! The menu at 13th Note has changed a LOT since I last visited, and I can't wait to go back. I was hugely impressed. I also can't believe I've never reviewed it - what's wrong with me! The 13th Note deserves high praise. The surroundings seem to have changed too - I remember the 13th Note as a slightly ramshackle, mis-matched and sticky table place, with fairly bogging toilets. NOT ANY MORE! The dining area at the back has been decked out in a lovely relaxing shade of green, and the art (for sale) makes for interesting things to look at. And with all the natural light coming in from the massive side windows, it really is a relaxing place to stop and have a breather. I'd say their menu is extensive, with many delicious dishes to choose from, and everything is very clearly marked to indicate dietary requirements or allergies. This includes the extensive wine and beer menu - all marked to indicate whether it is vegan or not (and a very pleasing amount is). It was about 130pm ish, and as I hadn't had breakfast or lunch, I was feeling in need of serious sustenance. There were so many things that I fancied, that rather than order a starter and a main, I ordered three plates from the starters/sides/snacks pages of the menu. The Mushroom Crostini was just amazing. Drizzled with truffle oil and served on good fluffy toast and a bed of rocket, I absolutely loved it. I could eat it every day. I also had the Lebanese Potato Harra, which came with a warm and soft flatbread. I also had The Note Salad - a substantial side, with carrot, beetroot, red onion, cucumber, chickpeas and toasted seeds. In an inspired moved, I stuffed some of it into the flatbread, as I do like a warmed salad, and had the rest with the potato harra - it made for a delicious combination. Fair to say, after that lot, I won't be needing much dinner either! I was served by two different people, both really pleasant and chatty. One of them mentioned that there is a new head chef, and I'd say they're onto a winner with him. I really appreciated seeing so many healthy, vegetable based dishes to choose from, and I am going to be very happy working my way through this menu. read more

After a week of Christmas dinners my mate fancied something a bit different and healthier, so I suggested the Note, as its colloquially known. I'd been checking out the menu before we went and had my eye on the Sri Lankan curry and Tom Yum noodles. Luckily, it wasn't mobbed for 6pm in a Saturday night and we were seated in a cosy booth straight away. Beer wise they have a good range of craft beers, which are fairly reasonable pennies wise. We couldn't justify £14 for a bottle of wine when we could pay half of that just up the road at Bar Home, so opted for a beer for myself, and a JD and coke for my friend. We shared the sweet potato fritters to start and even though we only waited about 20 minutes for our mains we were both ravenous, and getting a bit angsty. Luckily the old, I'm going to the toilet trick worked, for as soon as my mate left the table the food arrived! At the last minute, with the assurance that no bean sprout would touch my plate, I plumped for the noodles, while my friend chose the falafel burger. I confess that while I was awaiting her return I did pinch one of her amazing looking chips, and I regret nothing. Except ordering the noodles. As promised, there was not a bean sprout in site, but the noodles were the large, fat wormy looking kind, and that put me off a little. The veg wasn't so much shredded as thinly sliced, and the sauce, although tasty, was a bit excessive. The smoked tofu through it was amazing. My friend was thoroughly impressed by her falafel, and since she talked it up so much I had to take her up on her offer of a taste. It was nice and moist, as falafel can run the risk of being overly dry, but all I could taste was lemongrass, and although I love that flavour I felt it was a bit overpowering. When we were leaving we were given the wrong bill so asked the waitress for ours, which we soon kicked ourselves for as theirs was four quid cheaper! She brought out he correct one, but given the previous mistake I made a quick check to see that all was rig, and I'd been charged £4.20 for a pint when I'd bought a bottle priced £3.60 on the menu. Again, I pointed it out the the waitress, who updated out bill. To a £3.80 bottle. Even though I'd shown her on the menu what I'd ordered. I could be hooped quibbling over 20p, even though I didn't think it should be that difficult to get it right, so we just settled up and headed on up the road for cheap vino. All in all, I wouldn't really choose to go there for a meal unless someone was making me, or I was in town with the dog (one of the few places in the centre that's dog friendly), since I didn't really enjoy the main that much, and for the rest of the night, neither did my tummy! I might pick and mix the starters, but since the only other thing I liked the look of was the curry, which I hesitated in ordering after Briony's review, I don't think I'd be that spoiled for choice. read more

I really like the Note! Been here many a time for gigs, food or just for drinks and it's definitely one of my favourite spots! It has such a relaxed, cool atmosphere and is reasonably priced as well. The food is all vegetarian and very delicious. Their garlic bread with cheese is brilliant and also HUGE, once I just got that and a dessert (possibly the toffee apple crumble I think, which was very good) instead of an actual meal and I wasn't at all hungry afterwards. The bar serves St Mungo which is always a point in favour of any establishment, recently they've also started doing cocktails - this is either a recent thing or I've only just noticed it recently - which are also delish! Had their version of a White Russian in here a few weeks ago and that was excellent, tried a bit of my pal's cocktail as well which was some sort of elderflower thing and that was lovely, very refreshing! It's great as a gig venue too, intimate but not teeny, though it does have a tendency to get a bit warm (and sweaty, yum!) when it's busy so do bear that in mind if you're heading to a gig. The sound's pretty decent as well which is always a bonus! I think the Note has something for everyone and if you're looking to try something a bit different then definitely give it a go! read more

We popped in on a sunny Sunday after a traumatising trip to Slaters. Another belt hole? There must be a reason for this... The menu is great, even for those who don't really go for veggie food there is going to be something that will appeal. I ordered the spicy veggie burger (which wasn't very spicy, if I am honest) and Gem opted for small plates of humus, Sweet Potato Fritters and the Daal. Yeah, we over-ordered, which is now more of an expectation than a mistake, but despite this still managed to hoover the lot. This probably explains the expanding waistline. The staff were really friendly and accommodating, music not too intrusive and the general feel of the place is very welcoming. It is also worth noting that they have a great selection of beer and cocktails, as well as a good jukebox, so its always worth popping in if you are out in the city. I recently had a couple of guests staying with me in Glasgow, both of whom are vegetarian (well... one's pesci but we won't hold it against him) and one of whom is lactose intolerant. They threw down a challenge, "if Glasgow's so great take us for an awesome vegetarian brunch. Also, please make it somewhere 'edgy' because we're massive hipsters." God love 'em. Ok, so challenge accepted because I've been meaning to try the 13th Note for ages. A quick scan of the menu online confirmed that everything was vegetarian, much of it was vegan and they had three brunch options not including some of their main menu which would definitely have been brunchable. We arived, got comfy in a nice booth by the window and scanned the menu. Although the breakfast tali sounded amazing (and I definitely want to go back for it) we were all starving so opted for the full veggie breakfast. The cafe definitely ticks the 'edgy' box, there's unusual art scattered about the place and gig listings for the music venue downstairs. It's dog friendly and they offer free dog treats for your canine friends, so there were a few folk in with their pets. Soon the food was ready and we tucked in. The veggie breakfast involves veggie sausage, amazing home made baked beans, veggie bacon, toast, potato scone, hash browns, tomatoes and garlic mushrooms. When ours were brought over the tomatoes and mushrooms were missing but we didn't even notice until five minutes later when they were brought over with an appology - apparently the chef forgot them. Nice that they noticed before we did. The place has a really great, friendly atmosphere and the food was really good too. My veggie hipster guests were as impressed as I was. I definitely need to get back here in the evening at some point for a pint and some live music. read more

I've never understood the link between mung beans and musicians but like most of the places in town that do decent gigs and play good music you've not heard a million times before, meat and dairy products are strictly off the menu at 13th Note. I understand that many vegans choose to do it for health reasons, but sometimes I wish they'd just have a cheeseburger and get over themselves. Lack of carnivorous options aside, the 13th note is a buzzing little indie bar that's been going for years. It seems to be considered a bit down the pecking order behind Mono and Stereo but sometimes I prefer the more pubby ambience that this venue has. It's a solid option for a few drinks in town and there's a decent chance of there being a worthwhile gig on downstairs. read more

One night, Lumberjack and I decided to do an impromptu bar/pub crawl. We started in Merchant City and somehow meandered south to the 13th Note. As part of my Glasgow cultural learning experience, my music-obsessed Lumberjack insisted I check this place out. This place is awesome... aside from some funny smells coming from downstairs, the 13th Note reeks of coolness. It has a very indie vibe, but not pretentious at all, like some other places I've experienced. I haven't had the opportunity to try the food or check out a gig downstairs (mainly because it's always been part of my drinking excursions). But it's a great place to just hang out and enjoy drinks with friends. Next time I'll have to get my veg grub on and check out a gig. Holla! read more

Dopey service seems to be par for the course in venues like the 13th Note, but luckily it doesn't detract too much from one of the best live music venues in the city. The main bar is everything a music bar should be. Looking the part, it is peppered with more gig posters than you can possibly imagine and retains an undeniable dive bar vibe. In saying that, it is extremely spacious and is just as often frequented by latte-sipping newspaper readers as it is by large groups of music fans. The jukebox is also excellent. As others have stated, the least rock n roll aspect of the bar is the vegetarian menu. However although I'm not of that persuasion myself, I must admit the choice is varied and excellent, with an extensive menu of cheap bar snacks also available. Downstairs is where the magic happens. Catching a gig in here is almost always cheap and while it doesn't quite attract the high profile names on a regular basis as many of the other smaller venues in the city, it has offered invaluable support to local talent for years. Most of Glasgow's well known acts will have played here at some point, most likely to a group of their friends who revel in the fact the setting is barely bigger than their bedrooms. All in all, a cracking set-up. read more

I am so in love with this place. My boyfriend and I decided this past weekend to have an impromptu night out together after a lazy day in and out of shops and out to Ikea. Mini ironing board and picture frames in tow, we ventured in to a few spots before settling here. We lucked out as we were able to score a cozy table and chairs near the large windows which had enough room to store our Ikea finds. My boyfriend and I love cider and usually opt for that, but today, I was feeling a little fiesty and went for an oldie but goodie: Blue Moon with a wedge of orange. Oh man, the American girl in me was over the moon happy. I tried to get my boyfriend to try it, but he's not a fan of any beer, and wouldn't. No worries, more for me! We stayed there for about three drinks each, chatting and laughing and having a great time. The ambiance in this place is by far one the best in the city, the music is always amazing and the bar staff are super friendly to boot. The women's toilet here though is super creepy and reminds me of any scary show I love to watch. I swear, it's haunted, haha! No matter, the rest of 13th note is amazing and this is one of my favourite pubs! Dogs are allowed, which is the best, and I get my fill of sweet dog face every time I'm here. They serve vegan food, which we've yet to sample, but everything on the menu looks and sounds amazing! read more

I haven't encountered any snooty staff when I've gone here, and I am not cool by any means (although I am also impervious to hipster condescension...maybe because my brother is a bit of a hipster. I understand them). Anyway, I love this place. I don't understand why in Glasgow it's very either/or on the vegetarian front (either everything is meat served in a pastry or everything is vegetarian...sometimes a veggie and a carno want to eat together, Glasgow restauranteurs!..but I digress), but nonetheless I am very glad to have such a great vegetarian option nearby for work. The food is lovely and cheap...always a great combination. This is also a great spot for a drink...it's got *character* and is very welcoming--I have seen old men quietly sipping a pint on their own, dreadlocked and nose-ringed hipsters sampling the falafel burgers, and normos like me chilling out after work. read more

Staffed by the aloof, skinny jean-ed, fop haired, artistic hungry looking generation, this is despite itself a good place for a pint or two, a gig or even some grub. Now you must be warned, if your on the hunger hunt after a night of drunken shenanigans and are jonesing for some MEAT!!!!!!!!, then my carnivorous pal, this ain't the droid your looking for. Vegan be the lifestyle choice in this joint and despite the lack of cooked animal flesh on the menu, they still manage to knock up some decent grub.....don't tell anyone i said that. The note is also a fine place for a gig, with a mucky wee dungeon of a venue giving the required feel to the event. One word of caution has to echo the point made by Marj concerning the honk form the toilets, but apart from this it's an A OK place. read more

HOW have I NEVER reviewed this place before now?! Sheesh...I am embarrassed. I have been frequenting the 13th Note ever since day one (and even when it was it's previous incarnation in Glassford Street many moons ago) and although I did slightly prefer the old 13th Note I still do love this one (seems wrong calling it 'new' when it's been established for years!). The 13th Note is one of my favourite live music venues. I have been attending gigs & events here ever since they opened and years ago I even put on a a few gigs (DJ-ed as well) and events (used to co-run a very wee record label back in the day) myself with out-of-town bands who we really wanted to see play live but weren't 'big' enough to play the larger venues & get gig promoter interest. It was fun times & I still remember the excitement of hosting those events & getting people in the door. The 13th Note is one of those places where you can and do discover new music/bands but without it having an air of 'school/pub band' about it if you know what I mean? If you've never been to the downstairs venue in here then I shall try to describe it as best - it is a reasonably but not TOO small/intimate venue (capacity is roughly 100+ I would say) with no stage as such - bands set up & play to the left as you walk in. To the right there is a bar and it's nice to know that when bands play they also get a cut of the bar takings from the downstairs bar - so if you're in seeing a band then please try to buy your drinks downstairs if possible. Some bands travel very far & don't get paid very much (if anything) so a wee cut of the bar takings is great and helps towards petrol money or even money for a room in a hostel/B+B if required (some bands come from the US or further). There are a few tables & benches also but most people will obviously stand for the gigs and sit down inbetween bands or some folk like to pop back upstairs if there's not enough space/free seats. The toilets used to be BRILLIANT for some top quality public/pub toilet graffiti but I noticed the last time I was in they have painted over it all - sad times! The whole feel of the venue is a wee bit sticky and dank so if you're a total everything-has-to-be-totally-spotlessly-clean freak then stay away! Ha ha! Luckily I like my bars a bit grimey and lived-in looking; I compare it to feeling comfortable in your own wee home compared to staying in a total show home and being scared to sit anywhere or touch anything...for want of a better comparison in Friends The 13th Note is Joey's place not Monica's! Gigs & events here range from free to around a £5 average; some obviously more, some less - depends on the night of the week & how many bands are playing or other such factors. I think paying that for a nights entertainment & live music is great - gig prices here haven't gone up *that* much over the years so they are still a total bargain & if you think about how much you would pay to go to the cinema or bowling or for a meal somewhere it is a bargain! Plus, you never know, you might just end up discovering your new favourite band or even everyone's new favourite band before they get big and start playing venues like The Barrowlands or (even worse in my opinion) the SECC. Ugh. Drink prices are average & they usually have deals on cans of Red Stripe or something similar, so a round of drinks here is not gonna break la bonk. I have recently discovered Heverlee lager and it is my current fave and they sell it now in The 13th Note - yas. Also the food upstairs is mighty fine and sometimes we like to pop in early before a gig & get some grub (I recommend the damn fine veggie/vegan burgers with a cheeky extra topping of hash brown, oh yes! The vegan cheesecake is pretty radical too) to line our bellies before we pogo the night away :-) Always a good atmosphere and if you like to actually SEE (myself being awfully myopic this is a bonus!), as well as smell & taste a band (in hot weather the ceiling is notorious for dripping with sweat! Mmmm...lovely) then The 13th Note is the place for you. If you have never been I advise you to pop in and have a look at the cool jukebox, sup a lovely pint, maybe pat a dog, people watch, have a spiffing burger & then pop downstairs & watch a band. We're in the Note so often that our dog now knows the route there and tries to go in every-time we walk past, which is a testament to how dog friendly they are. There is always a bowl of water handy and sometimes one of the staff will even appear with some treats or a tug toy. This welcoming attitude to dogs means that at anytime there is likely to be a few in the bar, including those owned by the bar staff themselves. The bar is fully stocked and has a good selection of beer, including quite a few by William's Brothers. All food is either vegan or vegetarian and very tasty, the spicy fries and olives are a firm snacking favourite of mine and the veggie burger and pint deal is a bargain at a fiver. The downstairs venue is a low ceilinged sweat box, when it's busy I've actually seen the perspiration dripping from the ceiling *yuck*. It's hot, it's grungy and it's loud; but that's part of the experience. It's a busy venue often with two or more bands playing every night. Pick up one of the Note leaflets each month for full listings. As well as the live music in the upstairs restaurant area they usually have an exhibition on display from a local artist which is always worth having a wander round. read more

13th note reminds me of the pubs i used to walk in head down to try to avoid being ID'd in Manchester. Its got the same feel that alot of these places have, but battered round the ages but the clientele are friendly and laid back and if you frequented there enough Im sure you would end up knowing most of the regulars. They have gigs on and are dirt cheap, but the bands tend to be a bit more punky than Im keen on so cant comment on a gig night. If I gave 13th note more of chance Im sure I'd love it - but its across from Mono, which I really like so it doesnt get much of a look-in - poor 13th Note. read more

I used to frequent this place in my youth - well, I'm only 28, but you know what I mean! Quite often me and a crowd of pals would pile in here to see some friend of a friends band and have a few pints of cider and black. Ah, memories! It wasn't until a few years ago I'd actually been in here during the day and I really enjoyed the food, despite the lack of all things meaty! A few weeks back I went in here during the day, to have some grub and a couple of beers with a friend. The food itself is excellent, the fact it's vegan could be a downside for some, but not for me - it's bloody tasty and well-priced! The decor is grubby, but that's part of the appeal. The range of beers on tap is good and there's always a nice alternative to the usual Tennents-Guiness-Strongbow standard that too many pubs employ. During the day when there are no gigs on it does attract a different crowd, but that's one of the nice things about this place. In terms of vegan or vegetarian food, I'd agree with some other reviewers and say it's slightly better than Stereo and The 78. Given than I live out West, I rarely venture to this end of town, but the 13th Note is worth making the trip for! A really good wee place for a few swallies and some alternative music and food. read more

It's an awesome place with a great vibe and delicious food...BUT! I've been to the 13th note a few times. I'm a big fan of vegan food, even though I am not vegan. Either way! The food is always good, so is the music they play and and and that interior... but the staff... well the staff is just not nice at all. And this is where my big rant begins. I went to the 13th note quite a few times and barely ever left satisfied when it comes to service. But this one time, I will never forget. I decided to go for a quick lunch one hour before work. I went to the bar and asked for a glass of juice and a menu. I waited 15 minutes and never got attended, even though it was very quiet. So I went to bar to order my burger. Once I finished my burger, I put a used napkin and cutlery on my empty plate and waited for someone to collect it, full of hope to order some dessert. Short, snobby waitress passed my table few times and never picked up an empty plate. As I mentioned I didn't have much time as I was working this afternoon, so I took my empty plate to the bar myself where the waitress was talking to a chef looked at me, frowned and eventually came to quickly collect the plate after and left, so I had to get her attention back and asked if I can order a desert. She turned around, looked at me as if I done something wrong and took an order, she was clearly very unimpressed with me. Obviously after I finished my desert I had to go to the bar to pay too, otherwise I'd be late for work. I never heard anything like 'is/was everything ok with your food', 'thank you for coming', 'would you like a drink' NOTHING. When I came the other day with a friend of mine, dude who was our waiter sneezed on his hand before putting cutlery on our table but I won't even bother to type about that. On the bright side, I got served by a very nice girl once. So there is still hope for this place. read more

Can't believe I've not reviewed the note before... ok then. The note is a Glasgow institution. A haven for vegan & vegetarians, alt-hipsters, artists and musicians. (Also a great place to hang out before and after the fireworks on Glasgow Green.) Free newspapers, good beer, and all the flyers you'll ever want. Pick up a newsletter at the bar, it lists everything that's on in the art space in the restaurant, and the venue downstairs. I've put gigs on in the venue downstairs - again, it's a Glasgow institution. Good deal for promoters & bands, great little space. And it's busy, with something on almost all nights. If you're an artist looking for your first exhibition space this is perfect for you - the note doesn't charge commission, although for that reason you'll find that there's a bit of a waiting list. The place has recently had a spruce up - new paint on the walls, and the toilets seem like they've had a facelift too. Likey :) read more

13th Note is a great wee venue for a vegetarian feast. Best among it is their falafel and amazing hummus. It's a far cry from authentic Greek food, but tasty nonetheless. The coconut and tomato curry is also fantastic. If you're a vegetarian and tired of only having a couple of choices on regular menus, or have a vegetarian friend who lives in a less vegetarian-friendly city, 13th Note is the perfect treat. The place itself is quite rickety, in a cool way, and there are loads of flyers for upcoming gigs and club nights. They also host live music and art exhibitions, which are well worth checking out. The website has full listings of its music nights and current and upcoming exhibitions. They also provide loads of links for vegetarian and vegan recipes and information, as well as loads more resources on music and Glasgow. Overall it's brilliant for a wee lunch date and a drink. read more

A few years back, the Note changed hands. The previous owners became the Stereo/Mono empire at just the right time: their audience was maturing, and the dive bar vibe of this venue was wearing thin. Luckily, the new Note owners retained both the name and the ambiance. This is a centre for the rock underground, and still gets the hipsters eating healthy, vegetarian food, while noise and metal rumbles beneath their feet. If I have any complaint, it is that the bar is too dark, without being intimate: it is a great place for larger groups, but it never feels entirely comfortable when I am with one other person... that said, they do do a range of impressive drinks, and the coffee and tea are cheap and good. The best thing is the venue downstairs. It has open mic nights for performers (Initial Itch by Flatrate Theatre), multi-band bills and a selection of both Glasgow's finest and small scale touring bands. It is also a great place to hire: if they sell enough alcohol on the night, they let you have the space for free, apparently. read more

I'm veggie and when on the hunt for food this is my go to place. I love the venue however over the past few year I've noticed a big change and it seems like the prices keep going up and up. The venue all together just seemed dirty, and although that used to be part of it's charm but removing the posters all over the windows and repainting the halls, I can actually see how down hill the place has gotten. The chairs were all broken, the toilet locks and many of the seats were broken and the small cleaning cupboard (yes my life is glamours) which they kindly let me use as a dressing area was spotless compared to the front. I was performing downstairs and everything was great then however upstairs everything just felt a bit awkward and like I wasn't welcome there. I wont stop going purely because the food is amazing and the beer selection is great however I wont be in as often. The thing I'd like to see change the most is that introduction of a kids menu. If theres food/beverages for dogs why not have a menu that's friendly for kids? read more

I'd been hankering to go to the 13th Note for some scran since tasting their houmous at the Britannia Panopticon event and the opportunity presented itself as a pre-velodrome early dinner. We went along at 5pm but as it was a Saturday night I booked just in case. Although it was quiet-ish when we arrived, after our whole group had arrived the entire cafe had filled up so was feeling glad that I'd booked! I decided the houmous had to be tasted again and so ordered two sides - that and some lentil dahl. Both were delicious although the dahl took a little while coming out and I had to ask after it's whereabouts. My friends ordered the aubergine and halloumi kebab (clean plate left!), vegetable mousaka, mezethes (v.generous sized portion) and sweet potato fritters/chips (with rosemary salt. I believe this is the way alllll chips should be served). We were 5 very satisfied customers! read more

Vegan time. We love trying Glasgows vegan restaurants. We're not vegan, but I'm lactose intolerant and don't eat 4 legged animals... so a vegan restaurant is practically heaven to me knowing I can EAT ANYTHING on the menu! That NEVER happens! The 13th note was good, we really enjoyed our veggi burgers and the garlic chips were awesome. The menu had a lot more that I want to try in the future. Now I can't really speak beyond the food because like all the other vegan restuants we've been to in Glasgow, people think they are just way too cool ! Glasgows suppose to be the friendly part of scotland! But I guess its still NOT cool to be friendly in the hipster-world. Sad day. I've been to the Note loads over the years - it's a good stop-off point for meeting up with mates and having a few drinks before gigs at the Barrowlands! There's a good selection of beers, and they have Joker IPA on draught so that's a winner for me. The bar area is a nice open space with tables and comfy booths. There's also a small venue downstairs hosting regular gigs. I'd never eaten here until recently though. The café area is at the back and is cosy with cool art on the walls. I was here for dinner with my parents and we managed to grab the last table on a surprisingly busy Wednesday evening. The menu is all veggie and vegan with quite a wide choice of dishes. Our server was patient with us as we spent a fair bit of time chatting instead of reading the menus... We were informed that a couple of items weren't available but this wasn't a problem for us as there were equally tempting alternatives to choose from. We decided to order a selection of starters to share, followed by spicy veggie burgers and 'Glasgow's best chips' (a bold claim!). You can customise and add extra toppings to your burger which I would've done if I'd noticed before I ordered. The small dishes arrived quickly and were my favourite part of the meal. We shared cauliflower and cashew soup (a full decent sized bowl), hummus (a generous portion of delicious hummus for sharing, with some crudités and warmed sliced pitta bread), Italian bread and olives (another large portion great for sharing) and large chunky sweet potato fritters. These were all excellent and we were already quite full before our veggie burgers arrived. I was a little disappointed that my spicy veggie burger wasn't really spicy at all, but I do tend to like a fair bit of spiciness and this was a bit too cautious on the spice scale for me! Aside from that it was a fairly decent burger - a large chunky homemade patty, similar to the fritters but with lentils and vegetables, served in a bun with salad and those 'award-winning' handcut chips which were tasty but I wouldn't say they were the best in the city. I never really have experienced an exceptional meal on any visit to The 13th Note. The food is very average, the menu is padded out with a lot of processed fake meats. On this occasion I ordered the vegan breakfast which consisted of some dry, grey looking fake rashers, a stodgy sausage that had me gulping down water to rinse the taste from my mouth and a lot of forgettable bog standard extras like beans, a single tomato and some slimy mushrooms. The venue is good for gigs, but in the cold light of day it needs a good clean, and some new chairs! read more

The Note is a great music venue, and definitely on the list of places to go on a good rockin' night out. I generally like hanging upstairs in one of the oversized booths, but if we can't find a seat, we're usually pretty miserable. Thankfully, that doesn't happen very often because the patronage is as laid-back as the staff are, and you'll usually find that a kind stranger will offer up a corner of their table to share. The WiFi is always down when I go in, so I rarely bring my laptop with me anymore. However, for nightlife purposes, it's a one-stop-shop. You don't really want to go anywhere else, and that, my friends, is why they have a hard time getting me to leave at closing time. Sorry about that. But really, I'm not. read more

Ohhh Yes, Now from the outset I'm the meatiest meat eater in the land and am quite happy with a plate piled hight with animal Caracas. Now Even I love this place and the veterinarian food on offer. It is a good place for me to bring people who I want to prove that vegetarian food can be really awesome. On this occasion I had the veterinarian Haggis, neaps and tatties; it was stunningly good. great flavour and the quantities were good too. My only tiny gripe was the number of items out on the menu and from the bar, as this was explained from the outset I haven't marked them down, Infact the staff were great at letting us know what they had run out of. I do need to remember that they don't serve cheese on their veggie burger but that is my non veggie mind that would love bacon with it too. My first visit was purely a gig visit. As a venue it wasn't the best, audio was slightly too loud for the bands aswel as the audience however the space was very intimate and engaging. My second visit won me over. I visited for the food, keep in mind I waited well over the conventional time for food to be brought to my table so it speaks volumes in regards to the quality of food produced. The food was so incredibly seasoned that vegetables took a whole new meaning. I would recommend the food to your stereo-typical carnivores as I'm sure the depth of flavour would win them over. read more
