I'm sure everyone has heard of Barry's. As a worldwide chain it brands itself as the original strength and cardio HIIT workout. As someone who's done many many HIIT classes at another fitness studio, I actually felt intimidated to try Barry's for the longest time. I had the opportunity to try a class as I received a complimentary pass from an event I attended. Signing up for a class is simple, you choose the spot you want to start at and rotate between the tread and floor portion making sure you stay at the same number you selected. I always start with cardio so I chose to be on the treadmill first. The Barry's studio is equipped with all you need - washroom with amenities, showers (only 4), towels, and lockers. All you need to do is show up with your workout gear and an attitude to work hard. The studio also has Barry's branded gear for sale as well. This particular studio is on the second floor - the main floor is occupied by the Fuel Bar. Price wise, Barry's can be quite pricey. The classes are not cheap but you likely will expect to see results if you go consistently. The Barry's brand itself, I find, caters to a more intensive fitness focus crowd - everyone is there to work out and get a good workout in. There is primarily a younger demographic who go but I saw people of all ages attend my class as well. In terms of the workout, I did the Run x Lift (total body) class. The class can be beginner friendly but it likely is important to know how to do basic weight exercises as it can be difficult for the instructor to correct your form during the workout. The instructor does call out a speed range on the treadmills and you can choose how heavy to go on the weights portion. During my class we switched stations three times. The workout itself can be tough if you push yourself. There is not much time to rest and is non stop except for the times when you switch stations. Expect to be motivated by the instructor, the loud music, and others around you. It can be difficult if you are completely new to HIIT workouts to follow. For me, it definitely was a good workout! Make sure to stop by the Fuel Bar on the main floor for a post workout smoothie! Overall, I totally get the hype for Barry's and why people love it. A bit pricey for me but I definitely won't mind going from time to time!

If you're looking for high end boutique fitness, this is it. The first location in Canada, Barry's at Richmond boasts a smoothie bar, towel service, a stretch room with vibrating foam rollers and a basic supply of personal care products in their change rooms (gendered only). COSTS Trying them for the first time at the start of the year, I was able to maximize a 3-class deal, where you pay $60 for the 3, versus $32 for a single. After you do try you first class, they also send you a promo for another deal so long as you redeem it with 48 hours. SPECIALTY Now for the actual workout: Barry touts itself as one of the most intense workouts you'll ever complete, because, instead of doing interval training with dumbells or body weight, you alternate with jogs, runs and sprints on the treadmill to get the heart rate way up and work up a sweat. REGISTRSTION How do the logistics work? When you sign up online and reserve your class, you're given something like a workout stations chart. There's a row of treadmills to the back of the fitness studio, and risers everywhere else. To reserve your spot, you select whether you'd like to begin with sprints or with weights. If it's not your day for cardio, there's also a row of risers that are designated as "double floor", meaning, no treadmill. Whatever you choose, if you're alternating, you start at a riser marker F3 for Floor 3 and when the time comes, you alternate to T3 for Treadmill 3. To get oriented, first timers should show up early to check in at the desk, where staff will also walk you through an illustration of the treadmill controls. WORKOUT Due to the high intensity, the sprints ARE as challenging as advertised. If you get lucky, your instructor may also ask that you use "Dynamic Mode" where the treadmills move via manual power, aka--yep, you guessed it, your legs! The good news for your burning legs is that sprints usually last 30 seconds, which is very tolerable. So while the sprints are tough, it may not be the toughest workout out there if cardio is your jam. If you're intimidated by the sprints and the jog, I'd recommend that you talk to your instructor about modifying the prescribed speed range--jogs are 4-6, runs are 7-9 and sprints are 10+, and start where your comfortable, increasing your pace by 2 levels each time. This is something I've done in my first two classes, because I have a fear of flying off the treadmill and bowling someone over on the riser. When you're on the floor, expect to do anything from leg raises, squats, burpees to resistance training. The moves vary depending on the day of the week, and all classes that day will target lower body for example, with the instructor's choice of moves. Since I became aware of Barry's by way of Asics' free HIIT class taught by Steven Bole, Asics Ambassador and Barry's instructor, I only ended up attending his classes. Out of the three classes I tried, my favourite was his Friday total body. FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT Unfortunately, the only thing I wasn't a fan of, is how squished the changeroom is, proportionate to the volume of folks using the facilities---i.e. someone's glass water bottle was shattered during my first visit because there's one bench in the changeroom and it was doing double duty as a storage and sitting surface. Then again, it's winter, so the squished sense I got will likely vanish in warmer months, when people are not carrying twice the amount of gear around. If you plan on visiting soon and you don't need to change into your gym clothes, there are lockers right outside the fitness studio that are less crowded. Or, since Barry's has a stretch room full of foam rollers etc. try taking your time cooling down and stretching while waiting out the crowd. BONUS If youre a fan of gym selfies, Barry's branding game has got you covered. There's wall decal and gold carpet by the entrance, a mural upstairs plus props for all your gram needs. Finally, if you can't find a class on a stat holiday, chances are Barry's will be open---I've been to an 8am class this past Family Day and someone told me they've visited Christmas day. So next time you don't know what to do on a stat, consider spending part of it at Barry's!

OMG my legs were jelly after my first few classes. This place is no joke! Everyone is super fit at this place and it can be very intimidating at first. Inside the room the red lightning, dark mood and loud music feels like a club which is a great vibe. The workout is intense, lots of running which I personally don't like but after a few classes you do see yourself improve and gets slightly easier. The instructors do push and encourage but the first few classes are confusing, I didn't know the exercises and no one comes to help or instruct you on how to do it properly which is very discouraging. The women's change room is quite small and after work classes are packed, I can't even enjoy the nice amenities they have. But the cooling towels at the end of each workout is great. The classes are not cheap at all so I haven't been back but I can see how these workouts can be very effective. The smoothies at the bottom are amazing so delicious but again not cheap!

I'm hooked! Brendan, Steven, Karina and Michelle are my favourite go-to instructors. Especially Brendan, he's as good as they get. They're all super hype and they use positive reinforcement to get you going! The entire place is super clean and has everything you need after a good sweat.

I wanted to get stronger and focus on functional fitness to make my life as a new mom (lifting a rapidly growing baby) easier and pain free. She met me where I was and tailored our sessions around my goals, even going as far as practicing good form getting up and down from the floor with a baby in hand. We spend time each session checking in on where I'm at physically, emotionally, mentally and adapt the session as needed (like if I'm running on very little sleep). After only about a month of working with Vysh I had gotten stronger and most of my daily pain was gone. Now I continue to see my strength and endurance improve and am looking forward to continuing training with Vysh and working on my next set of goals together. Her trauma informed approach and the language that she uses makes it such a safe space, especially compared to other experiences at large gyms. For folks who may have had bad experiences in toxic gym environments and are looking for a trainer and a safe space for a diversity of bodies & backgrounds, I can't recommend Vysh enough!
