On the way to the airport, I stopped at the funeral home. She asked if they had done my parents' funerals. I was a bit embarrassed and said "no, but they lived around the corner." After explaining what I wanted, she quickly separated the ashes into three containers and brought them back to me. I asked her what was the charge. She said "No charge. Happy to do it." I was blown away. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting (a few $100 dollars maybe) but I wasn't expecting it for free. And that was it. I am so grateful to the kind people at Kish and if I sadly had another service to plan in the area, I would absolutely use them.

I waited until every detail was complete to safely speak my mind. I strongly felt my trust was violated. Comments were made to me during the meeting that were unwarranted and left me confused as to why they were even said to me while making funeral arrangements. My one brief encounter with the owner of the funeral home was when he came in the room as we were placing flowers around the casket and I said everything looks good. The owner of Kish Funeral Home exclaimed "this isn't our first time at the rodeo." I found this to be a very insensitive and crass comment to make in light of the loss and grief we were feeling. No signs of empathy or a genuine handshake from a business man who owns a prominent funeral home in town. I was told that our funeral was the worst they have had in the 10 years they were in business. I was shocked that this was stated to me because I did not encounter any incident or cause any problems for the funeral home or their representatives, but when I questioned the remark 3 times, they refused to answer or apologize. During this very sensitive time, I found this comment insulting and injurious to my good character. Funeral homes should never advocate for familial unity when there was none prior to the passing of the decedent. Funeral homes shouldn't pass judgement, exhibit favoritism or discriminate based on status or title even though the deceased resided in the Cobblestones. Mourners certainly will take note of bossy and rude representatives of Kish Funeral Home during the wake and tell me later how they felt. Once your funeral is a sure thing, their next goal is securing the next wake. You can get everything right but if you violate a family's trust by overstepping your place and bounds, you lose everything. Trust is everything to a family when selecting a funeral home. Unfortunately, it is not easy to grab your deceased loved one and walk out the front door once arrangements have been made. Kish Funeral Home lost on all counts.

His skin was actually gray-without color- and had gray blotches on his cheeks. It didn't look like him. A rosary was added without permission. Family members were not allowed to enter at the beginning of the viewing until the person who made arrangements arrived. The ordered food through Geisen was there but not opened for guests, who were unsure if it was for them or was to be taken back to the house. Guests also had trouble finding the guest book to sign as it was placed behind an open door. The person in charge continues to be there and though she was apologetic, her leadership for the experience doesn't replace the experience which should have been a different one for a grieving family.

We were out and about visiting our moms for the upcoming Mother's Day, and had a stop here at St. John-St. Joseph's. This cemetery is very old, easily over 100 years, and is very well kept up. The grass is always mowed, and weeds don't run rampant around here. Also, the groundskeepers do an excellent job of righting any headstones that get too far off kilter. I like the fact that they let you visit and plant perennials or annuals at your gravesite. They don't guarantee anything, but you are welcome to try. Water is available at many spigots around the property to help you get plants settled in. I never worked with the property staff, and so cannot comment on same, but it is run by the Gary Diocese and I suspect run very well. Beautiful grounds and grounds-keeping ... recommended when you have loved ones in need.

They do not compare to the quality, efficient, warm, and professional service that Manuel Memorial provides. From Angie, all the way down to their interns, they are all remarkable. They buried my sister in 2010. There was a discrepancy in the casket that was noticed the night before her funeral. Angie not only corrected the issue, but upgraded my sister's casket. We walked into the church the next morning and we shed tears not just because of our loss,but because of how beautifully she was prepared. She looked like the Princess that she was! Angie followed up with us weeks afterwards, to make sure we didn't need help with thank you cards! Since then, they have buried two of my uncles, a few family friends, and members of our church, all from our referrals. We even stop by just to say hello to them when we are in the area. Their staff is truly a family. I feel so indebted to them for going above and beyond their duty at such a pressing and dire time of our lives. I highly recommend them!

After several calls on Monday I was finally told that the ground crew thought base was sinking and was repairing that. No one in office initially had any idea of what was going on nor did anyone bother to call to let us know about this. I needed to publish my…read moremom's obituary and they never offered to do it until I logged on to Memoriam.com and they will publish for you, in every newspaper available. I was told by Gleison that this website was for funeral homes only. That is a lie. You can setup your own private account and pick and choose what newspaper you want/need. Further, on a Saturday, the funeral director told me that they were very expensive, reiterated they publish on their own website, and after enough pushing on my part, I wanted to know if she could find out about doing it, since she said it was a service that they offered. I couldn't believe it, because they never offered it. Over a week later, they never bothered even following up. When I tried to address it, I was ignored, them telling me, "I don't know who you spoke to." Very unprofessional and a waste of time. It's a good thing I took it upon myself to just do it on my own.
