This place rocks!! All the girls here treat you like a king and they are all very skilled at giving you the haircut you want, fast and reasonably priced! The service, the atmosphere, the pampering, it is all so worth the trip and the relaxing hour you will spend on your appearance. Just the fact you get to have a beer, soda or water, while watching sports on their HD flatscreen is reason enough to give this place a try. Linda was the stylist that took care of my hair and color. She did an amazing job asking exactly what I was looking for, as well as suggesting ways she felt would help the overall look and feel. Especially with the color needed to help my gray. She took her time, made sure I was happy with the result, fine tuning as much as I asked. She was always smiling and having fun at what she does, and that goes a very long way in making me, the customer, extremely happy. Not only was the haircut and color an awesome experience, the icing on the cake was all the extras that follow. The neck and shoulder massage felt amazing! I did not feel it was rushed as you tend to feel at other similar salons. Excellent value for the price! Ask for Anna, although I'm sure everyone else is great too, just haven't had a chance to work with them yet. I have searched and tried many stylists and barbers and know how much of a challenge it can be to find the right person to do your hair. I usually go to a barber in downtown SA, but I was in the Costa Mesa area running errands so I figured I would try this place out. From the moment I walked in everyone was nice and welcoming, offering me a beverage. The place looks clean and down to earth. I got the chance to get my hair done with Anna, and she was awesome. She listened to what I wanted and delivered just that. She took her time which stands out, while many other establishments seem to be more focused on how QUICKLY they get you out the door as opposed to how WELL they cut your hair. She kept going until the hair looked just right, at the time they style I got was a fade up on the sides to a bit longer on top, where it was long enough to style (messy spiky). This place ROCKED!! That was one of the best salon experiences I've ever had. Linda was my stylist and she was absolutely delightful. We shared some common interests so there wasn't any awkward conversation, or worse, awkward silence. Although with her personality I don't think either one is possible. They give 10/10 haircuts but the wait is waaaaay too long. I came in and had to wait an hour and 27 minutes for them to give 2 number 2 buz cuts. Be prepared to wait at least an hour and give an extra hour for your actual cut. read more

I don't know who cut my hair, and although he was very conversational and very nice, he did a terrible job. My hair was very uneven and each side around the ears was done differently. My introduction to Barbie Barber was through a groupon in 2011. Though the name sounded cheesy and i guess their marketing pitch was cute girls cutting hair i bought it as it was close to my work. I was more than pleasantly surprised when the hair cut i got was not only good but the atmosphere was casual, came with a free beer and the stylist was very knowledgeable. Now I am a happy returning customer for the last year and a half. I could care less if the person cutting my hair is a babe or a dude as long as they don't screw up my hair, i have less of it now compared to 10 years ago. I have tried two stylists which know my hair and cut it awesome every time (find something that works good and keep with it philosophy). i recommend both fairy and mariah highly. This is a place which takes care to cut your hair carefully so if you are in a hurry and need a buzz with a trimmer, go to supercuts, this is not your place. The dislikes, the employee turnover, like in a usual hair place, is high so you have new people coming in and training which can potentially be dangerous to your hair if you get a newbie. I have been coming here for quite some time. I literally drive 20-28 minutes from where I live to get a haircut here. I believe all the barbers here are really cool and very skilled. Specifically, I only let one person cut my hair and his name is Tam. I'm extremely picky with who and how precious barbers cut my hair. Therefore, this place is the place to go for a clean, nice haircut. Not only are they good at cutting hair, but extremely nice to you. Customer service + skilled haircuts = one of the best places to go to get a haircut. Personally, I'm not crazy about referring people or anything but since the beginning I have gone to Tam. If you don't want to read the whole story below, here's a quick rundown: This place was great when it has awesome hairdressers who ran the place. Then when they all mysteriously "left" and the owner/manager ran things nearly solo and doesn't listen to the customers...this place went into the toilet IMO. Want details? Read on. -In the beginning... I waited until I had been here a few times before I wrote a review. I have to admit, I really didn't need to. The service the first time is just as good as my fifth time! I don't give 5 stars to many places, but the staff of hairdressers here completely earns the fifth star! I found this place a while back after buying a Groupon for it. I wouldn't have found it otherwise. It's a small place in the back of a stripmall off of Harbor Blvd. It's got 4 or 5 stations plus a couple of hair washing chairs. It's clean but small. They also have a flat screen that's always tuned into whatever game is on at the time or ESPN if nothing else is on. The staff is where the quality is. I had my hair cut 5 or 6 times by Leah. She is very friendly and cuts my hair perfect every time. She will rap with you if you want to talk or just cut your hair if you don't feel like being chatty. -Here's the rub and why my rating went from 5 stars to 2 stars: After coming here for about 8 or 9 months, Leah and a few of the other girls no longer worked there. I asked the owner (who also cuts hair there) what happened and she said that they had moved on. I decided to get my hair cut there anyways. The girl cutting my hair was a rookie; it was actually her first day on the job. I didn't mind because if she messed up, they could just give me a buzz since my hair is short anyways. I told her how I wanted my hair cut and she proceeded to cut it. Unfortunately, the manager/owner kept interrupting her and telling her she was using the wrong technique. I thought she was doing just fine. The manager, while she was in the middle of cutting another customer's hair, stopped what she was doing, moved my hairdresser out of the way and started cutting my hair. My hairdresser kept trying to tell her that she wasn't cutting my hair the way I had asked and the manager responded: "I know what the customer wants more than they do. I've been doing this all my life." WOW. Now I'm scared. So 5 minutes later she finishes up and goes back to her own client that had been waiting with half cut hair. My hairdresser came back and showed me the cut in the mirror and asked if I liked it. I didn't. It wasn't at all what I asked for. She then proceeded to cut my hair and try to fix it. All of a sudden, the owner starts yelling at her and asking her what she was doing. I interrupted and said that I asked her to fix the wrong cut that I had just been given. 10 minutes later it was as good as it was going to get and I left. I tipped my hairdresser and thanked her for fixing the "owner screw up cut". What a freakin ordeal. That seriously soured my previously great experiences. I mean WHO DOES THAT!?! However I decided that 1 bad incident doesn't mean that the place isn't good anymore. I went back for my next cut there and the owner was the only one working at that moment. I kept telling myself it would be fine. I sat down and told her I wanted a simple cut. 1 length on top and a shorter length on the sides and back and then blend them together. I ended up with a faux hawk. She even gelled it up and everything. I looked in the mirror and then at her and asked her if she thought that's what I asked for. She said, "this look is good for my face". I got up, let her know I would never be back again, left cash on the hostess stand and walked out. I immediately drove to a Supercuts and had them shave it all off. What a nightmare. I'm sure that there are great hairdressers at this salon, but the owner isn't one of them. She absolutely doesn't listen to the customer and basically does whatever she thinks is right for you! So long Barbie Barber. I won't be coming back. read more

Tam was accommodating despite being a walk-in. He really knows what he is doing. I was worried there was going to a be line in my haircut, but he rounded out everything and my head looks proportional all around, lol! Just hope it grows back evenly, anyway, I'm super happy with his skills, everywhere I've always gone, they take my "low-fade" request too high, so I ask for a taper. Tam did excellent work. I highly recommend Barbie Barber. The shop is clean, there's sports on the flat screen TV, and they offer a complementary beer while you wait. What's not to love? They also give a damn good haircut. I have wavy hair, which means that the hair on top of my head grows forward, my bangs swirl clockwise, and there are two cowlicks on the back of my head. In other words, my hair is complex. So I should seriously rethink what I buy on Groupon in the future. Makes me realize that you really do get what 'you pay for'. I set an appointment for 2:00pm and didn't get sat until 2:35 which seems less than professional to me if I go to the lengths of setting an appointment. Then, I get sat with a young, tall, nice gal (Leah?) who begins asking me what I'm looking for. Her and I were on the same page and you could tell that she knew what I was hoping for in a haircut - she got it. Then without warning, the manager, Fairy, tells me and the other stylist that I am moving to her station and Leah can take the next customer. ODD. I could tell this lady was going to be a bit much and she was training someone else so I felt like it would take forever. Maybe she'd do a thorough job since she was training(?). Anyways, I found it unprofessional the way Fairy moved me. Fairy kept asking me if I wanted a drink which I thought was nice but after the 3rd time I said no it made me realize she wasn't listening to me. That never bodes well for a good haircut. Adding to that, she never asked me what I wanted and just started clipping/trimming. I then mustered up the gumption to ask her for a generally shorter cut all around and then she proceeds to tell me I needed to leave more on top so that my thinning hair doesn't look bad. Thank you Fairy for pointing out the obvious. Thankfully, it doesn't bother me but I still would not go back if Fairy was cutting my hair. If you're looking for someone who's number one concern is that you are happy with your haircut, go see Fairy. Not only does she want you to be happy, but she wants you to become a regular. I've been there twice and it's a good feeling to know where I'm going to get my next haircut. While it might be possible to get a cheaper cut, but I don't think you could get a better one.
