It's definitely different with a triangular design that makes it stand out from the steel and glass structures all around. The interior is similarly unusual with polished marble floors, beautiful wood pews and plenty of light from above. One of…read moreonly a handful of places I experienced in my life where you can actually feel the holiness of the place. Perfect place to be for Mass and to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. There are monks and priests here from every corner of the globe and can accommodate hearing confessions in several languages. Founded in the year 1120 by famed mystic Saint William of Vercelli (aka St William of Avellino, aka St William of Montevergine, aka San Guglielmo di Vercelli), founder of the Williamite order of Benedictine monks, the "sanctuario" has been a noted pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. Situated on the mountain 1,480m above sea level, I've always found it lovely no matter what season I visit. Been here about 8 or 9 times and there's so much to explore. On the military crest of the peak lies the now abandoned former USAF Montevergine Air Station. About 500m below on the road lies an entrance to an old WWII German communications bunker and the scene of a vicious 3-day paratrooper battle in 1944 between US Airborne forces and Waffen SS troops sent to prevent the communication facility from falling into Allied hands. You can read more about the battle in Eric Morris' epic work "Circles of Hell: the Battle for Italy 1943-1945". Getting back to the more enlightening aspect of the shrine, visitors and pilgrims come here year round to see the famed 11th century Byzantine icon of Our Lady of Montevergine. There's much spiritual, emotional, psychological, and physical healing here so a side trip up this mountain especially if you're in the Napoli area, is highly recommended and definitely worth it. Founded in 1614 as a Dominican monastery, it was shuttered in 1652 by Pope Clement X due to an insufficient number of friars and the building's lack of maintenance. The church was subsequently converted into a courthouse, then reverted back to religious use. The church was closed following the collapse of the sacristy during an earthquake in 1980, then finally reopened in 2006 and continues to be use today, celebrating the Madonna of the Rosary. On a weekday they were closed midday though hours posted showed that they would return later in the afternoon. The main entry archway is made of tuff (yellow volcanic rock) with a single stained glass window depicting the Annunciation above it. Through the clear glass window you could see the white, barrel vaulted ceiling and front altar. I confess my time here was brief, I really only used the shade of the front entry to hide from the sun while I ate my sorbetto from across the street. Seemed like a quiet spot and I'm glad it was locked and set aside as a tranquil place for intimate reflection and not a tourist destination. The "newer" church was rebuilt in the 16th century. A primitive church was built around the third century, between 230 and 240. During the period of the rule of Diocletian, residents of Sorrento, Marco, Quartilla, Quintino, and Quintilla were executed as followers of the Christianity according to the laws imposed by the harsh Roman emperor. In the sixteenth century, a newer church was built on the site of the historic church. The church today has been restored in the classic Baroque style. Nice to go inside to view the single nave and side altars. The apse is decorated with paintings depicting some episodes from the life of the Madonna: Sant'Anna with the Virgin Child, the Assumption of Mary, and the Annunciation. On the main altar, there is a copy of the Madonna Bruna. Love paintings from the Neapolitan school especially the Madonna with Child. I was the only one in this church when I visited Sorrento during a shore excursion with Concetta Violante from World Tours. I said a prayer and made a donation. A very peaceful and beautiful church to visit.

The exterior renovated in the 19th century resulted in its current form today, the interior is much older dating back from 10th century. The building was constructed over a 6th century church, with those remains composing the simple and austere Basilica of the Crucifix that houses a museum of the church's treasures of religious ritual objects and artifacts. Other decorative styles are represented here as well--the main nave and aisles of the cathedral originally erected in the 1st century then revised in the 18th century, and the ornate Crypt from the early 13th century exemplify lavish Baroque designs, while the remaining frescoes within the chapels surrounding in The Cloister of the Paradise are 13th and 14th century Byzantine works. As of April 2026, tickets to enter are €4 for adults and €2 for children. Hours are daily between 9:00am to 6:55pm, last entry at 6:30pm. The cathedral only is open for prayer daily from 7:30-10:00am and 5:00-7:30pm. While not large, it's worth a look--the design of the cloister is intimate and unique. It's always awe-inspiring to come face to face with art that's outlived so many centuries of history, and probably will endure for much longer than us. They have placards in most spaces with English translations, though more details in Italian. You could spend about 30-45 minutes here. This church is absolutely stunning and worth the trip up all those stairs to get to see it…read more I honestly do not think it's worth any admission price to enter, even if it's under 5 euro each to get in. We paid less to see some amazing things at other places so the value wasn't there for me. So even if you don't want to enter, I still think it's a great view from the cathedral down to the city. There are also some cool architectural details you can look at without going inside. Ans it's cool up here, so if you're trying to get away from the heat, for free, this is your place to go.

Built in 1266 to house the tombs of Amalfi's prominent citizens. The120 marble columns support a series of tall, slender Arabic arches around a central garden. Very beautiful to see.
