Because it's a relatively short part of the road (especially the part with the umbrellas) it can get a little busy, but it's still fun to check out and get a little photo! There's a couple restaurants that are on this street if you want to stay a bit longer than just a quick sighting or a simple walk through.

With the rainbow umbrellas and painted pink pavement, we were thinking it might be a collection of raucous gay bars much like Calle del Pecado ("Street of Sin") in Sitges. However, we arrived in the late afternoon before the nightlife activities began. What we observed were mainstream cafes and bars that apparently draw throngs of straight tourists after dark. In the light of day, it was a relative dead zone. We didn't come back in the evening for the purported debauchery since we subsequently discovered the Principe Real neighborhood, Lisbon's gay epicenter. The elevator was closed when Jamie W and I attempted to visit it this past summer. In fact, it had…read morebeen closed for over a year due to major renovations. I had ridden it before sixteen years prior, and what I mostly remember is waiting in line for over an hour to get on the lift. You'd think I would've been bummed when I saw it was closed this time. Not really. That's because there's a workaround hack at Largo do Carmo next to the open-air convent. From there, we climbed a modest set of stairs to the upper terrace that connects to the elevator tower. The views are mostly the same overlooking the iconic terracotta rooftops (Photo). Yes, there was a bit of elbow jostling but no worse for wear. We could also better appreciate the ornate detail of the elevator tower (Photo). It was designed by an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel in the same style as the Eiffel Tower and the Dom Luis I Bridge in Porto. With a wide open concrete platform, it's a lot more laid back than the more crowded vista points at Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama. I presume tourists are less inclined to scale the hillside streets that lead here because it definitely feels more like a locals' spot. Fortunately there's an adjacent kiosk cafe (Quiosque do Adamastor) should you need nourishment for your trekking efforts. It'll help make your climb down easier. Even though it was packed, everyone seemed to find a place to sit, perch, or dance, and there were just generally good vibes all the way around. Don't be surprised if you run into familiar faces! Sunset seems to be the most popular time to be there, so if you're looking to get a bit more space to sit or are with a larger group, definitely get there early. It got cooler at night, also, so you could always just layer up and bring a sweater with you. I would also recommend a mini stash of toilet paper/tissue and some hand sanitizer, as the washrooms are pretty gnarly if you plan on squatting :)

Countless restaurants, bakeries, chains and independent stores. Besides Rua Augusta and its side streets the Rua Garrett is surely worth checking out. Like mentioned in another reviews, the restaurants on Rua Augusta are good for drinks and people-watching, but I would avoid eating here. Menu, quality and value are just not good enough.... but there is lots of good food in this city. Rossio and the Praca Do Comercio are surely other must-dos. But make sure to walk along the smaller streets in the west of Chiado too (close to Bairro Alto), lots of charm here! Some of the parallell streets to Rua Augusta get pretty quiet at night. Nothing scary, but not much to see or do though. From some angles you also can get nice views of the Castelo, especially at night a colorful sight!

The trams and buses circle the plaza, the tourists are walking all through and there are restaurants all around. There is underground parking here and a public toilet. I suggest popping in to O Trevo for "bifana e cerveja" - it's a pork sandwich and a small beer. It was one of Anthony Bourdain's stops during his only visit to Lisbon. Alfama's rustic cityscape is full of red rooftops and whitewashed buildings, which provides ripe Instagram material. As you'd expect, the wide terrace gets crowded during magic hour when selfie-itis reaches epidemic proportions. There's an open-air cafe, but we didn't bother trying it since we realized edible temptations awaited us after our obligatory stop here.
