As you find yourself in the front room, nestled around a table that touches every corner of the room you don't forget for one second this is not a restaurant and that is part of its beauty. The service, the surroundings, the food are all at a tangent of your "normal" experience. I mean, we even spoke to the people sitting opposite. The effort Lady Gray and her husband took to relax, feed and stuff you were laudable. The champagne to start was, well champagne. The cheese biscuits to go with it were the highlight. The rest of the cream tea was good, not grand Hotel good, but good. Where they really stood out was on the teas, a selection of 10s and with each person getting their own little teapot. The breakfast menu is simple but the quality of the core produce is way better than anything I've tasted nearby - to date. I've also experienced a number of poached egg disasters at restaurants recently, but these guys nailed it. Hallelujah for the soft warm yolky loveliness... The service was great too - young and friendly staff who were happy to serve and help. I didn't get to see the lunch menu so can't comment on this, but I was also intrigued to learn that Masterchef finalist Chris Georgiou uses this place for a gourmet burger night which takes place from Wednesday - Saturday called Gastronomical. I'll be giving that a try for sure.

It is a gorgeous little place, it doesn't look like there is much seating when you first walk in, but there is a little room in the back with a couple of tables which was a nice surprise. I had a pot of English Breakfast which was great and the little cow creamer pours so well that I was actually tempted to buy a 22.50 pound cow creamer! I ordered a scone with jam and clotted cream - scone was good, however they had something powder on it which I first thought was cinnamon and sugar, but unfortunately I think they had flour powdered on it which never tastes that good, but it was still a nice scone. Jam was good - quite chunky for me, but maybe not for others. And here comes the big disappointment...their clotted cream was not made in house, which meant that it was in a container and the cream was crusty on the top and liquidy underneath. I can buy this at Sainsbury's and I do not like liquidy clotted cream, it just doesn't seem right! Unfortunately I will not be back for this reason - although actually it might be nice to try their cakes, those looked wonderful!

I had the Team Room Blend, a popular choice it seems as the following two other people also opted for it, as well as a tea cake. The tea arrived in a proper teapot with cup and saucer and was easily enough for three cups. It was also a lovely blend, not too strong but with a distinct edge to it from your regular English Breakfast. The tea cake was a good size and came with butter which had already been warmed (a wonderful small touch) so was easy to spread. All in all very tasty. I have no doubts that if I lived nearby this would be a regular haunt, but as I'm not I bought a gift voucher for a friend who is and hope she enjoys it as much as I did. Will certainly be going back next time I visit.

I had the teacake, wich was very nice, and if you are willing to take my advice then ask for it to come hot and already buttered to the table; this way the teacake absorbs all the butter and changes texture slightly, which is what you want. Butter on the side just isn't the same. The cake selection also looked great and I'm planning to try a few next. They have a cute little garden at the back, it was a bit too cold to sit outside on that day, but if sunny I'd totally go for that spot. :)

I have several food intolerances so when asking about the ingredients in their homemade cakes I got a message back via the waitress that she can't guarantee the cakes were free from what I was intolerant to. As people with food intolerances are always ending up having to go without gorgeous food, I asked if I could have more detail of what was in the cakes so I could make a decision on what it was I could or couldn't eat, just in case there was something I could have. This was very obviously an inconvenience to the waitress and the manager who had baked them. She tried again to say she couldn't guarantee anything because obviously this was the quickest way to solve the issue for herself, but after explaining that I'd like to try to see if there was something I could eat, it was again very plain that I was wasting her time. It was late afternoon and they weren't busy, so I would have appreciated a couple of minutes of her time without the attitude. After finding out there was indeed a piece of cake I could eat, I sat down to enjoy it only to be served it with more attitude by the waitress. If she could have got away with grunting at me I sure she would have! I unfortunately had to ask for a pot of hot water as the tea didn't come with one, and AGAIN got a look saying 'are you bothering me again?!'. Cleanliness was also not great with tea-stained table clothes, dying roses on the table, and also dust on the teapot holding the roses which was next to an open sugar bowl which no doubt had the same amount of dust in it! Also, amazingly, a dog walking around the kitchen area with it's bed behind the serving counter!! (Yes, I am about to inform environmental health dept!!) Lastly, my table was being cleared before I had finished. I did notice however, that the other table still in there didn't have their table touched, so I'm guessing that was a touch of nastiness from the waitress also. I was there looking for a place to take 18-20 friends for my birthday which is coming up soon as we fancied a gorgeous afternoon tea, but we will definitely be going somewhere else after that experience!

The daughter bakes the cakes and I especially recommend the new orange cake (glutenfree): not looking spectacular but it's truly lush and the orange taste makes it fresh. Being a regular guarantees for greetings and small talks also calm space and wifi to work a bit. I hope to find some company among customers to transform the stairs into a ramp to make it also wheelchair accessible.

The scones were lovely and the cakes and tarts... well, where on earth do you start?? The tea was good - we all had good old English breakfast. We did ask for more hot water, which did not materialize, but I think we were all done by then anyway. They will pack up the left-overs for you to take home without any fuss. They also have a nice little gift shop. Parking might be a challenge if school is in session and about to let out as there is only street parking and a school across the road.
