I was not living in Arkansas in the 1990s so I do not recall the incident. The marker next to the structure reads, "This facade is all the remains of the five story building occupied from 1907 to 1955 by Reynolds - Davis Wholesale Grocery Company. The building subsequently served Checker Transfer & Storage Company from 1957 thru 1988 as well as other tenants throughout its long history. "A tornado ripped through downtown Fort Smith on the ill fated Sunday night of April 21, 1996. The storm destroyed this and numerous other buildings located along the west end of Garrison Avenue. The facade was preserved as a reminder of the grandeur of this once fine structure." The marker was erected in 2012 by Griffin Properties of Fort Smith, LLC. The pedestal is 30 feet tall and on top, has a depiction of a Confederate Army soldier facing north. He is holding his rifle stock. It was erected in 1903 by the Varina Jefferson Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Sebastian County supplied troops for both sides during the Civil War. In the initial months of the war, four infantry companies, a cavalry company, and an artillery battery joined the Arkansas State Troops, and at least five infantry companies and two companies of independent scouts were later raised for Confederate service. We learned a little bit about Judge Isaac, Parker, as one of the first influences that had to deal with the wild West murderers and people committing heinous crimes that until he arrived, didn't face many consequences as there was no federal government system that was in control of the area and the tribunal process did not cover non-native Americans. Fascinating history. You can even see a replica of the courthouse as well as the gallows as they were over 160 people hang here. Take a rock across the railroad tracks and read a bit about the trail of tears. There are plenty of areas to contemplate the history. Bring a picnic, there are many places to relax and spread out. Mister Peanut appears on every can and jar of Planters peanuts and has even appeared on TV as an animated character. This statue is in front of the Planters facility (canning? packaging?) in Fort Smith. It is accessible from the employee parking lot. He is 30 feet tall and looks exactly the same as the ones on my can of nuts. My visit was a quick in and out, so there was not enough time for any security patrol to get mobilized. Allegedly, there are smaller Mister Peanuts and a sit-with-Mister-Peanut photo-op but these are closer to the facility and in a specific "visitors only" area. If you find it, let me know.
