And, even if you are on a budget you can find those showcase pieces that can make a home. I may be trippin'…read more Some three weeks ago I was wandering through the Layton Hills Mall and came across a self-proclaimed "indigenous gift shop" called Maky Arts. It was a retail store with a mishmash of products: Peruvian coats (for every, yes your reading this correctly, every NFL team); stuffed animals (mostly small dogs); toys including light-shooting rifles (you also heard this right); gigantic animal-themed dreamcatchers; Navajo-type rugs; doll accessories; Baja jackets; and an eclectic variety other things that would take me hours to describe. And then at the University Mall, I saw it all again. Except this place is RUNA Arts. I rubbed my eyes, I went to the food court and ate a Stromboli and Diet Pepsi to recharge my internal batteries. I went back to the site where I had my possible hallucination .... but it was STILL THERE. Did some Peruvian siblings named Maky and Runa have a falling out, split the family wares, and head in opposite directions on I-15? Did the name "Runa" not test well with audiences? Am I missing the nuances of a very slender difference between two totally different stores? Whatever the case, both are wonderful, eclectic, original stores that give their malls a one-of-a-kind gem. Okay, maybe two-of-a-kind ... but awesome nonetheless.

We hired Ogden's Flooring/Design to replace our basement carpet before listing our home. From the…read morefirst call we were clear that we had a firm deadline tied to our listing, more than a month out, and we were assured repeatedly it would be no problem. It was not. The start kept getting pushed back to the last minute. The first crew couldn't finish, said they ran out of materials, and left a mess of food boxes and trash across our backyard and basement floor. After that it became a pattern: every time I asked for a completion date I was told "very soon," and it never happened. There was always a new reason, most often that materials weren't available or an installer couldn't be found. The delays forced me to reschedule our staging and photography, which cost me significantly out of pocket. At the final deadline the job still wasn't done. I was told it could only be finished with a mismatched carpet, and even then they missed the day they promised. In the end I had to find and pay someone myself to finish the job Ogden's had started. Part of my basement is now mismatched, the work finished late, and it only got done because I stepped in and paid out of pocket to complete it. Despite very clear communication about the stakes, Ogden's has not made any effort to make this right. I'd think carefully before trusting them with a project that has a real deadline.
