Bat 17 is a great place to go for drinks and food. Head over on a Saturday if you want cheap martinis! They offer 5 or 6 martinis for only $5.95, and they are definitely worth your money. Very strong, but delicious! They also have beer towers which are great to share with friends. The food is also delicious. Some of my favorites are the Pulled Pork Sliders, and the BBQ Chicken salad. Their salads are HUGE! Plus, they are super generous with toppings. They are so flavorful that you don't even need the dressing. The Buffalo Cobb salad is also quite good. Service can be a little slow, so don't drink your water too fast, because you might not get a refill. And don't forget your wildcard for a discount! read more

Went here for brunch last weekend while staying in Evanston and found it a pretty solid option. Free coffee and tea is always a plus, and the service was pretty solid. On the plus side, the portions were enormous! On the flip side, the prices were rather inflated as well ($15ish for a burger in a place that feels like Five Guys with a bar), so you're basically paying for the enormous portions. And while an enormous menu offers enormous variety, the menu is really too big, and I had no idea what their specialties are. I'd go back... but with so many restaurants in Evanston, I'm in no rush. read more

The sandwiches here are huge and pretty tasty. I had the California dreaming and I added bacon to it. It was pretty good. And a couple can share it easily. We got the sweet potato fries which were burnt and average tasting. And for an extra dollar you ax get an additional side. We tried the bacon potato salad which was terrible. It was drenched in chipotle sauce and you could not even taste the bacon. Overall I would come back and look forward to trying other stuff on the menu and the service was very nice. read more

I love the food and most importantly the PORTIONS here. It is almost impossible to fit the sandwiches and burgers inside your mouth without deconstructing it. There are a bit more choices for sides than a usual joint like this - highly recommend getting the sweet potato fries or onion rings! Things I recommend on the menu - all burgers and sandwiches. Stay away from the sliders - they tend to be dry (buns and meat). I didn't enjoy their breakfast menu as much as their lunch and dinner items. They offer free coffee! I docked one star off because I've really bad service before, especially with large parties (the waiter/waitress knew they'll just get gratuity). But other than that, food is amazing! read more

Wow! If i had to choose one way to describe this place it would be: quaint + large portions. If you're lucky enough to be there for brunch, get the fried chicken sandwiches. Cruised through on a day trip up to Evanston on a fairly busy Saturday morning. Spent the morning exploring the lighthouse and wondered through Northwestern University, so we worked up quite the appetite and Bat 17 did not disappoint. The place is divided into two sides, the Original and newer bar side. I think the only different is that the Original side serves their full breakfast menu while the newer bar sides serves only certain selected breakfast items. Wanting to keep our options open, we sat in the Original side. I went for the fried chicken and biscuit sliders. Sure glad I was STARVING as I'm not sure if I would've been able to finish all four biscuits. Their sliders are more like individual biscuit sandwiches more than anything else. Anyways, fresh biscuits, juicy fried chicken topped with Wisconsin cheese and BACON be sure to load up on that maple syrup for each bite. My mouth is watering just thinking back to it. First off, the food is good, and the portions are HUGE. Definitely a good value if you take your leftovers to go. I'm a particular fan of the tuna salad sandwich. One unique thing about this place is that they have an entire shelf devoted to different kinds of specialty hot sauces that you can request with your meal if you're into that sort of thing. I've been here mostly for dinner, and it's always crowded. The crowding has been somewhat alleviated ever since they opened a second section of the restaurant, but the two halves don't actually have the same menu (the new section is just bar food), so the same problem remains. If you're coming with a group, they won't seat you until your entire party is physically present. I understand that they do it because they don't have much seating space, but it can get a bit inconvenient. The other downside is the wait time. I've found that now matter what item you order off the menu, it will always take a very long time for them to make. All in all, this place has good food, but it's not my favorite. read more

This is an awesome place to hang out with people. I loved the high walls covered in signs and chalkboard menus. It was loud but not to the point where I had to yell over the noise or keep saying "what" to hear what the other person was saying. I ordered an Angry Ball to drink. We ordered chicken nachos to share and I have to honestly say they were the best nachos I've ever had. And the portion is huge! I ordered a pretzel boy burger with fries, ugh so delicious. It was pretty big, I only got 1/2 way through. Definitely one of the best burgers I've ever had. It came with a really awesome pickle too. The fries were kinda lacking in flavor but it's okay because we had so much extra cheese in the pan from the nachos I started dipping them in it. Service was quick. I read Yelp reviews and sometimes wonder how the experience could be so different. Let's start with the Antonio, our server; we came for lunch and sat on the pub/ bar side. Awesome service; attentive service; polite service; excellent service! The food was excellent. We had the Bad Donkey (Corned Beef and Pastrami on Sourdough bread) and split it. The meat was excellent and piled high. No charge to split a meal: we got an extra side for less than a dollar and both were great. Best Gorgonzola Cole Slaw I ever had. The Sweet Potato fries were wonderful. We ate and ate and, though the prices were higher than Subway, it was comparable to a good deli. A nice plus is a free coffee bar - you can get a cup at no cost and it was good coffee. There are two sides - I was told the smaller side is a restaurant that focuses on breakfast and the side with the bar and tables is both larger and accommodates both. I'm a "regular", guess I better write a review! I haven't been in Evanston for too long, but it seems that Bat 17 is a local favorite and great standby! It's so convenient for us, and so far I haven't had anything I didn't like. Some of our favorites: the Carnegie rueben, any burger, the sweet potato fries, and the corned beef hash. The menu is rather large, but we always end up ordering the same thing! (Side note - they do a great bunless burger too for those days you're feeling like trying to do better) FYI, there are two sides to the restaurant, and if you are there for drinks/apps only, do NOT go to the left! I had slightly rude experience once when I didn't know the rules. But have no fear, the social area to the right is huge with plenty of space for all of your happy hours! The service is also hit or miss regarding politeness. No problems with the timing or not having a server, but definitely have had really great ones and sometimes ones that seem annoyed with me constantly. I come with low expectations and enjoy the food :) I've brought visiting friends and my parents here, and it's always a great, steady choice. read more

While the food here is amazing (hello, California Dreamin' and sweet potato fries!), the service is incredibly lacking. First off the sandwiches are massive--even the "small" sizes!--and the sweet potato fries are hands-down the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. They also have a very nice drink list. However, brace yourself for the glacially slow service. This is clearly a place that banks on the fact that their customers are immersed in the many sporting events shown on their TV screens and too distracted to care about the slow service. I ordered a beer and they handed me a can. I requested a glass from our server but it came a good 15 minutes later. This is baffling, since this is a tiny restaurant and I can literally see the glassware a few steps away behind the bar. The icing on the cake was when we had no napkins. Given the impossible journey for glassware, I just got up and brought over a bunch of napkins from the bar. Two minutes later, the server materializes (still no glass, btw) and says "Here's some napkins." WOW. Delicious food but epic service fails abound. read more

This place is a cool sports ban, universally loved by Northwestern students and locals alike. The atmosphere is very upbeat and fun and they sell lots of popular college drinks (white claw, twisted tea, truly). Hands down my favorite restaurant in Evanston. And burgers are my favorite food, so Bat 17 has a very special place in my heart. 7 out of my 16 grubhub orders are from Bat 17. I LOVE BAT 17 WITH A PASSION. I've had all of their burgers (except the boring burger because I guess I like my burgers exciting) and they never disappoint. I would recommend getting a side for your burger/sandwich (I think it's only 50 cents extra for most sides). I usually get the onion strings (if you're down for some extra grease to tie it all together) or the spicy potato salad (the spiciness compliments the rich burger very well IMO). And the portions are large that I can usually take half of my burger home! read more

This is one of my favorite places in Evanston. I've eaten here many times and never been disappointed by the food or drink. It's a quirky place, with a large mural of bats on the front wall, a much-too-big-for-the-space bar shoehorned in the back, and interesting bathroom decor (if you've been here, you'll know what I'm referring to). But, if you can get past the oddities, you'll probably arrive at the same conclusion as I do: Bat 17 serves up great food and drink. Their "regular size" sandwiches are absolutely MASSIVE - I'm a big guy, and yet they're still a "take half home" meal for me. They also offer "full size" sandwiches, which are even more massive-er, but I've never been brave enough to try one. They use really high quality ingredients, and have always had extremely fast service. The food is a bit pricey ($10-14 per sandwich), but the size lessens the sting of the price. On the subject of drinks, Bat 17 really shines. They always have decent beer specials going, including beer towers (100 oz) for a little as $22. They also have $5 martinis on Saturday nights - this is the only bar I've ever met which has their best mixed drink deal on the weekend! For the non-alcoholic set, they have soft drinks and a FREE coffee bar - they even say right on the menu that you can simply walk in, get coffee, and walk out on your way to the train (I've always bought something with my free coffee, though). All-in-all, it's a great little place. It does lose one star for being a bit too pricey on food, but that should in no way deter you from giving it a try. read more

Enjoyed our burgers here! Said to be the "best burger in Evanston" and I'd have to say it ranked right up there. I had the Black and Bleu burger (with sweet potato waffle fries for $1) the others in my party had the Sunny Side up and RICKY BOBBY. We all really enjoyed our burgers. The atmosphere is fun, but cramped. It's not a large dining area, so if it's busy - you are on top of each other. Service was just ok - but like I said, it was busy. Would definitely recommend and will most likely return to try another burger! I used to love bat 17 but since the pandemic, their food quality and service has made supporting them impossible based on my last 2 experiences. First was forgiveable. I ordered a sandwich and a salad. The pastrami was very rubbery and generally bad (like they reheated the meat multiple times) and the salad had no toppings (just lettuce and dressing). I have a long history with bat 17 so I let this slide. Second was not forgiveable. I ordered nachos, wings, cheese fries and potatoe skins for the superbowl. Told me 40 minute to pick up. I show up maybe 5 minutes early and the food was already sitting out and seemly cold by (assessed by touching the bag). I get the food home and was suprised the cheese (so obviously cold by now) was already poured on both the nachos and fries. Why? Made both inedible because the fries/chips were soggy and cold and since dredged in cheese, unable to be air fried or microwaved. Wings just taste like cardboard.. like supermarket frozen then flash fried then microwaved... I've ordered these many times before and they just were not good. Long story short, the food quality and service no longer justify the price point. Other place make better but cheaper bar food. read more

This place is AMAZING. stopped in on their Lombard location last night. First I want to say that before we tried anything of the menu we were treated with such great service that I was hoping that the food would match the service. My wife is allergic to gluten. The manager was the one who waited on us ( Wish I remembered her name), she was not 100% sure on a few items if gluten was an issue or not. instead of playing it off like she knew she want to the chefs to find the answers. In many cases a server will try to guess. that was not the case here. We had asked for recommendations and she recommended several items on the menu.....Roadhouse Chicken Sandwich and the Blue Lightening Chicken Sandwich were two that were chosen. We also ordered regular tots and parmesan tots This is where BAT 17 separates itself form other places and my wife ordered the parm tots and thought i would have too but I said no incase one of us did not like the Parm tots we still had another option. the manager heard this and said no worries if you do not like something we will make you something you do like. Big difference in service levels that we have gotten from other places where they do nto care if you like their food they will make you something else but charge you for another meal. Now on to the actual food. Both sandwiches were incredible. Very tasty and huge portions. The tots were very good as well. Portions are pretty big so come with an appetite to match their portions. We were so happy that the food matched the experience we received walking in the door. Expectations were not only meet they were exceeded. Store manager is a great asset. They are known to have the best burger in Chicago and we will be back to confirm that. based on our experience there is no doubt we will enjoy the next trip in which could be this weekend. read more

I visited Bat 17 with a friend for an early dinner recently. It was nice enough to allow us to sit outside; which was a treat. If weather permits I would suggest that you ask for an outside table also. The service was just right; our server was attentive without being intrusive. We both ordered "small" sandwiches which were more than satisfying for the average appetite. I ordered the "Funky Monkey" which is found in the Vegetarian section of the menu. This beast of a sandwich is piled high with avocado, Roma tomato, and Wisconsin muenster cheese slices served on thick sliced grilled seven grain bread. We also sampled the cole slaw which is complex in flavor and texture; sort of a fiesta of ingredients. It is an understatement to say that stopping just for the cole slaw is more than worth your effort. There isn't a lot more that I can add to this review that hasn't already been mentioned by others. If you haven't tried Bat 17, please do so on your next visit to downtown Evanston. Note to those out there confused by the name... "BAT" is Benson Avenue Tavern and "17" is the first two digits of the address. Now wasn't that simple? read more

New favorite sandwich place? I think so!!! Like the rest of the reviews say, these suckers are huge! The amount of meat that can be piled between two slices of bread is incredible. I had the skirt steak sandwich and it was beyond delicious. The steak was tender and juicy! topped with lightly fried onions and vermont white cheddar cheese. The fried potatoes that accompanied it was just okay-- slightly tasteless and a bit dry. However, I also tried the fried sweet potatoes and that was really good. The bread tastes homemade. It's really thick and perfect for the amount of meat that goes on these bad boys. Apparently they get it from a bakery across the street, not sure what it's called but it is very good. I also noticed a great selection of beer. I didn't get to experiment but it seems pretty extensive. The coffee here is also terrific. Bold and rich, and apparently if you're in a hurry you can grab a coffee to-go, for free? Sweet deal! read more
