Ross Witham Beach is a scenic and historic beach in Stuart. It is named for Ross Witham who was…read moreknown as the turtle man for his environmental conservation and study of sea turtles. He served as the the Marine Turtle Coordinator for the Florida Department of Natural Resources and authored more than 30 papers on sea turtle and spiny lobster biology. He served as a mentor to many volunteers instructing them on how to identify and protect sea turtles. He released 28,000 sea turtle hatchlings from the beach that bears his name. He died in 2004 at the age of 87 and his ashes were scattered in the ocean during the time the sea turtle hatchlings leave the beach in order to begin their lives in the ocean. The beach is known for it's rocky looking outcroppings known as the Anastasia formation which was named by E. H. Sellards in 1912. The formation was deposited during the deposited during the late Pleistocene and the "rocks" are really sand and coquina limestone embedded with mollusk shells and sparry calcite. It forms cliffs and caves that form a habitat for sea life. It is not very comfortable on bare feet but it makes a lovely backdrop for pictures. Ross Witham Beach is located directly in front of Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge. Built in 1876 it is the only remaining house of refuge in existence. It was run by the United States Life Saving Service to rescue ship wreck victims off the coast of Florida. It is open for tours and looks like it did in 1904. A hundred feet off the shore of the beach and 22 feet deep is the Georges Valentine Underwater Archaeological Preserve Shipwreck Dive Site.The Georges Valentine was an iron hulled screw steamboat built in 1869. In October of 1904 the boat was sailing with a crew of 12 and a cargo of mahogany that was being taken from Pensacola to Buenos Aires. They encountered a storm and the boat sank in front of the house of refuge where seven of the crew members were rescued. In 2006 the wreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The depth of the wreck is shallow so you can park at the beach and snorkel or dive. I love the laid back Caribbean atmosphere of Stuart. This beach has so much beauty and history associated with it. It is a wonderful place to take pictures, experience history first hand, snorkel and dive, or just worship the sun.

Bought an air fill card which was recently denied by the owner, Tanya Neville. She stated that…read morethey no longer honor those cards and haven't for at least 5 years yet we pre-paid for 25 refills and had 8 fills remaining PLUS we had tanks filled last year. This is FRAUD! She bought the business from her ex-husband on 4/9/25. Since then, the store has gone downhill. She hired kids (which is good) but they are under 18 and cannot fill tanks legally so we left our tanks. When we inquired about hours, we were told they would be opened until 4:00pm but when we drove 45 minutes we found the store closed with no signs on the door. We tried calling but they don't have voice mail set up. She said she gets "thousands of calls" and didn't want to set it up. Employees park in the parking spot reserved for loading/unloading tanks so we had to walk our tanks across the parking lot. We will not be using their shop any longer and I would others to stay away. There are better dive shops in the area.

The views were stunning on the day we went with bright blue skies and seas with not too much by way of waves. I think the guard stand had a yellow flag for conditions that day but the water looked nice for a cool, refreshing swim. The beach itself is pretty clean with no litter that I could see, and the shelter has plenty of picnic tables to sit at and take in the views. They have a foot sprayer that's located a bit far from where it is needed at the entry. I did not use the bathrooms while there but it is nice to know there is a permanent standing structure there.

Jensen Beach Park, also called Sea Turtle Beach has a huge free parking lot. You can grab a snack, breakfast, or lunch or rent a beach chair and umbrella at the Sand Dune Café which is open 7 days a week. You can also bring your own food to enjoy at several picnic pavilions. The park also has a sand volleyball court and bathrooms and showers. There is a oversized Adirondack chair for a fun photo op near the café. The park is also home to the Martin County Ocean Recue Headquarters. The soft sand and clean water along with all of the amenities makes this a great spot for enjoying a peaceful beach day. I loved seeing all of the sea turtle nests on the beach. I hope the little guys make it to their ocean home.

The afternoon cruise, which preceded the sunset cruise, was likewise, a fabulous experience for us. In addition to the cruising, we were able to enjoy some swimming and wading to a nearby sandbar and hang out a bit. In short.... A PERFECT AFTERNOON FOR US!
